AFTER ATLANTIS: Working, Managing, and Leading in Turbulent Times Review

AFTER ATLANTIS: Working, Managing, and Leading in Turbulent Times
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Successful management today does not consist in re-creating the conditions under which we thrived in the past -- a past even greater than the Atlantean one! To create success for oneself, one's organisation, community or nation, one needs to identify the primary forces that work in today's turbulent environment: the drivers of change in the private and public market place as well as within the workplaces. That, precisely, is what After Atlantis is about.
In a sense, After Atlantis has not invented anything new. It is not old wine in a new bottle, either. The book leads the reader from the known to the to-be-known: Acknowledging and re-establishing the well-known fact that no one off-the-shelf solution can meet the challenges of organisations today, the authors seem to have succeeded in extracting a synergistic approach from the various disparate approaches that most of us are already familiar with. The book, however, does not (and it does not want to) offer a fish, but provides the wherewithal to fish in troubled waters.
Starting with a clarification of the meaning of turbulence, After Atlantis proceeds to identify the basic drivers of change and turbulence and show how to set about managing them through the four phases of discontinuous innovation, continuous improvement, breakthrough improvement and another discontinuous innovation. These phases are dealt with in good detail.
The recommendations of After Atlantis (for working, managing and leading in turbulent times) are extracted from the authors' own research of field-tested practices, which are well recounted in the book. The extracted process has been christened as The Shared Learning Process, which subsumes the approaches of Search Conference, Participative Design and TQM.
Besides presenting a concise and practice-based process, the book also provides a tested architecture with which one can understand how to launch and sustain a quality management and continuous improvement process in an organisation. The logic of where, when and how to start is a specialty of this even otherwise special book.
M.Joseph Arul, Ph.D., Professor at IRMA, Anand, India.

Improving Time to Profit: Customer Focused Strategies for Marketing and Sales
Average Reviews:

Superbly organized and clearly written, this book should become a dog-eared handbook in the war chest of every marketer, product manager and salesperson. Although he downplays his research, Kobi James brings both an academic and an on-the-street perspective that both questions and motivates the attitude of companies to focus on customer needs when rolling out a product or solution. Anyone in the business of selling product or services should do themselves a favor and hunker down with this book

Excel 97 for Busy People: The Book to Use When There's No Time to Lose Review

Excel 97 for Busy People: The Book to Use When There's No Time to Lose
Average Reviews:

Since I'm already an avid fan of the Busy People series, finding & buying this book was/is a BIG relief off my constantly going mind. As with most of today's world, I too don't have much time to attend a class on how to use the application, nor do I want to flip thru those MANY user guides that it comes with. Besides which, in my line of work, spreadsheets are needed constantly, my employer dropped Excel in my lap & basically said, "Give me..."
I found navigating thru the book fairly easy (if I wanted to go over a specific function, or just a quick review of the whole section) & the mini hahas are just right in keeping my attention span. Both geniouses, and not the geniouses (like me) can learn & grow at our own speeds.
I would recommend this book for people that need to know...yesterday...but just can't find the time.

How to Acquire $1-million in Income Real Estate in One Year Using Borrowed Money in Your Free Time Review

How to Acquire $1-million in Income Real Estate in One Year Using Borrowed Money in Your Free Time

I completely disagree with the previous reviewer. I believe that Hicks offers much to the beginning real estate investor. If the writer of the previous review does not believe that it is possible to get into real estate investing with little money of your own he is very mistaken. And I just read in one of another of Hick's books today about the value of starting slowly.
The phrase OPM (other people's money) has been valid since Robert Allen starting tossing it around and it is still valid.
Tyler Hicks is an interesting fellow. He is an engineer as well as an investor, and a prolific author in many fields. He graduated from Cooper's Union in New York City, a school that you cannot buy your way into. Yes, he does like to sell his newsletter, but big deal, it is a helpful resource and much cheaper than many of the bootcamps the "guru's" offer. I have actually spoken to him on the phone, he offers his live phone number to the readers of his books. By the way, the writer of the previous review has his own products to sell. That is okay, but he should not defame others on his way to success.

Hardest Times: The Trauma of Long-Term Unemployment Review

Hardest Times: The Trauma of Long-Term Unemployment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this title as part of an effort to understand what happened to my family when my father was fired and was subsequently unable to replace his job. The book was almost unbearably sad to read, but it rang absolutely true to the way I remember this crisis and its effect on my father and our family, especially the overwhelming sense of shame we all lived with. Mr. Cottle lists his research and statistics in the first chapter, and then he simply tells stories of trauma experienced by the various men he interviewed. The stories haunt you long after you've put the book back on the shelf. They make you wonder how to really help these men and their families. And you're also left with a more compassionate view of the long-term unemployed. They aren't lazy, useless folks to be disposed of, but human beings with souls who have experienced what amounts to a life tragedy. They need our compassion, not our judgment.
