Bad Time Stories Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)This book is just impossible to put down. Sander had written in such a conversational and personal style, describing a life that is difficult to imagine on your worst day. Set in Germany during and after WWII, she takes the reader through days of hardship and occasional moments of joy and self-realization. This is not a pompous woe-is-me recitation of hardship. She lets the reader feel the pain, frustration, humiliation and personal deprivation of a teen in war-torn Essen. The reader can almost feel the soot and grit in the air and on all surfaces including the food! The evolution of this remarkable young woman to an assertive, risk-taking,educated, and warm teacher is worth reading again, but don't start the book in the evening--it will keep you awake as you move through the stories of her life.
