How to Raise a Family on Less Than Two Incomes: The Complete Guide to Managing Your Money Better So You Can Spend More Time with Your Kids Review

How to Raise a Family on Less Than Two Incomes: The Complete Guide to Managing Your Money Better So You Can Spend More Time with Your Kids
Average Reviews:

There is a big difference between "what we WANT in life" and "what we NEED in life." As a counsellor, I hear so many people with families say, "there is simply not enough money to go around," and in many cases, particularly single-parent families, that is true. However, in the case of many (and certainly not all) two-parent families, there WOULD be enough money to go around, if people had their priorities in order and actually knew how much they were spending on the "wants" in life, as opposed to the "needs. All the frills, luxuries, power lunches and expensive "play toys" i.e., cars, boats, motor homes and exotic vacations, can bring financial burden. Long after the novelty of the new "play toy" has worn off, the debt continues.
It is most unfortunate that all those who choose to live in a materialistic world, do not read this book before they lose sight of what is truly important in their life, and how short life is. The time, in the overall life cycle, that we have our children all to ourselves to enjoy is very short, indeed. Children need parents or a parent, depending on your family structure, to give them quality time and love far more than they need designer jeans and a car by the time they are sixteen. Sure, most kids would want those things; kids have a neat way of testing limits and boundaries, theirs and ours. All too often, it is the parents who are trying to compensate by giving their sons and daughters what they never had as children. But, at what cost?
This is an excellent book and highly recommended. It will make you think twice, not only about where you are spending your money, but how much quality time you actually spend with the greatest investment of your life - your children.

$3 Meals in Minutes: Delicious, Low-Cost Dishes for Your Family That Can Be Prepared in No Time Review

$3 Meals in Minutes: Delicious, Low-Cost Dishes for Your Family That Can Be Prepared in No Time
Average Reviews:

The premise of this book is great. The economy is tough and food prices seem determined to outpace unemployment numbers. However this book fails to deliver on several important points:
1.It's not really $3 a meal. It's $3 a serving and even then I'm not sure it really averages out to be that low in some cases.
2.The 'ways to save money' portions of the book are very general and superficial. The book 'hesitates' to recommend specific coupon websites for fear they might become defunct. God forbid we get a bad link! I mean, seriously? Further, aside from being told to use coupons, there is no specific insider advice beyond that. Nor any mention of Angel Food ministries. They are a non profit that offers meat at approximately a 50% savings. (Here's more info:[...])
Essentially, all the cost saving 'advice' is the same generic stuff you've already heard before. There's nothing new or fresh in this section of the book. We're even reminded to avoid grocery shopping while hungry. Like no one hasn't heard that one at least a dozen times!
3.I knew I was in trouble with this book when the basic roast chicken recipe calls for 3 different fresh herbs. If I were to purchase these at the store, it would easily be $6 in herbs alone. Ironically, I don't recall seeing any 'tips' about growing my own herbs as a way to save money.
4.There's big detour into 'knife skills' and other cooking expertise tidbits that I found kind of odd. This is meant to be an economizing cookbook. We don't go in depth on coupons, but chopping food gets a couple pages? Really?
5.There's no mention of cost on the recipes. I understand prices change, but it would be helpful to know if I'm looking at approximately $10 in ingredients or $20. Some barometer of recipe cost would have been helpful and made this cookbook more relevant.
Overall, this is a generic cookbook that falls short of delivering on its premise. However, the recipes seem competent and there's no question the author knows how to cook. I'm not sure they author really knows how to be frugal, though.

Thriving in Transition: Effective Living in Times of Change Review

Thriving in Transition: Effective Living in Times of Change

Useful as it explains many aspects of making successful transitions. Essentially with a theme of thriving it has interesting case studies. It list the difference between the 'old zero' and the 'new zero'. It also shows the characteristics of a coper and profiles the traits of a thriver. The book is a 'workplan' for those who wish to become thrivers. Not only does the book address the issue of careers but many other personal challenges one faces in life. I would recommend this book to mentors, coaches and cousellors.

In Good Times and Bad: Strengthening Your Relationship When the Going Gets Tough and the Money Gets Tight (Wiley) Review

In Good Times and Bad: Strengthening Your Relationship When the Going Gets Tough and the Money Gets Tight (Wiley)

First I would like to say that I am a therapist and one of the # 1 reasons for divorce are money problems. This transcends all income levels. I loved how this book was really descriptive about how people's attitude about money affect their perception of how whether their partner is messing up with money. For example for some money means security or power or love etc. It really addresses the issue from a psychodynamic approach. If you buy one book, make it this one.

I will preface this with the fact that I skimmed through the book when I was at the bookstore. However, I came to the same conclusion that other reviewers have of Kiyosaki's last few books: He just rehashes the tenants of "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" over and over.
I would flip randomly at a page and read a few paragraphs and swear I was reading "Rich Dad, Poor Dad". Things like "Don't Work for Money", "Become and Entrepreneur", etc. And he went into the different types of thinking...i.e. Cash Flow Quadrant rehash.
Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Kiyosaki and enjoy his message. I even met him in person one time and it was great. But is this what his "business" is? Just reselling millions of Americans on the hope that his books will help them? Other than his book/game empire, what is Kiyosaki's major business?? Anyways, just my two cents.
