After reading the three volumes of A RETURN TO ABUNDANCE, I now have meaningful and enjoyable conversations about money and finance with my teenage children. Other financial books I've read didn't jumpstart money conversations with friends and family. Here are three reasons I think A RETURN TO ABUNDANCE succeeds.
1. Money unconsidered is an unconscious demon, we react out of our long-standing patterns, rather than acting based on conscious choices. Author Paul Gubany's brilliant use of everything from the history of money, to psychology, to Greek Mythology helps uncover a person's individual money patterns. (Volume One and Two) Once you know the patterns, you have choices - and life patterns are always fun to talk about.
2. If you don't decide what's ENOUGH, you'll never have ENOUGH. Gubany helps us figure out what our own Abundance is, and he shows us the satisfaction and simplicity of living with a personal definition of Abundance. (Volume Two) If you don't know what's ENOUGH, you'll never ever have enough money. Gubany's process gave me a sense of peace and well-being about money that I've never felt before - I'm freer now from the money demon than I was before I read A RETURN TO ABUNDANCE, freer than anytime I can remember!
3. A RETURN TO ABUNDANCE, along with its engaging presentations about the nature of money and the human psyche, also includes the technical aspects of understanding the time value of money. (Volume Three) No problem for my kids to understand this third volume of A RETURN TO ABUNDANCE, and, barring the collapse of our world order, they see how they can realistically and easily accumulate a millionaire retirement during their working years. These are nice conversations to have during dinner.
My advice - stop reading the reviews - start reading A RETURN TO ABUNDANCE. I wish Paul Gubany a wide readership, his book is a work of love, a work of art, a benefit to anyone who will open its covers.

Strategy is one or most importants tools in our competive world, in this moment we are trying to improve every thing, every day, but we need know where is the correct address, this book provide us with a step by step guide for make an strategical plan, and teach us how to implant it, in our business and daily life, be excellence is a comprise, and we can accomplish with it, trying to use this knowledge.
I read this book, when I was a student of human resourses master's degree, and use this book several times, in this moment I only have basic knowldge of strategy, and now I think that this point of view, is much easier than similar in spanish language, is more concrete and is based in the roots of the organisation.
Culture and believes in the organisation are the basis, in this competitive world the unique difference, like fingerprints is the organisational culture, the organisation relationship involves moret han internal issues, involves global relationships, now the world is shrinking and the strategy is a pocket tool for us.

The AARP Retirement Survival Guide: How to Make Smart Financial Decisions in Good Times and Bad Review

The AARP Retirement Survival Guide: How to Make Smart Financial Decisions in Good Times and Bad
Average Reviews:

I purchased this book because amazon.com alerted me to it and because it had all
5* customer reviews. After having read it I have mixed feelings about its usefulness :
On one hand, it provides a good overview of the financial planning process that needs to be followed to determine how much to save for retirement and how much to withdraw during retirement. It also provides a good overview of some of the retirement income products/annuities, and it has helpful checklists to select a financial adviser. Furthermore, I found the chapter on reverse mortgages a useful
introduction to a very complex subject, with several helpful web sites listed.
On the other hand, the book is not detailed enough to do a financial plan, i.e. establish an affordable expense budget in retirement that includes determination of the amounts that can be safely withdrawn from investments. There are better books available that include detailed worksheets to do this, such as J.K.Lasser's "Your Winning Retirement Plan", or "Getting Started In A Financially Secure Retirement" by Henry Hebeler (both of these books also refer the reader to useful
web sites for DYI financial analysis/modeling).
Part II ("Evaluating Retirement Income Products) provides a high level overview of annuities, enough to probably confuse/scare most readers to avoid these products altogether or to see a financial adviser (perhaps this is intentional).
Appendix D contains an interesting case study with a complete retirement plan; unfortunately it is presented without any explanatory comments accompanying the individual worksheets, thus leaves the reader with many questions as to the details/logic of the plan.
In summary, this book provides a good overview of the retirement planning process and does an excellent job cautioning readers about unscrupulous financial advisers, sales tactics and investment scams. It is, however, not detailed enough to be a "hands 0n" how-to-do-it guide with which people can do their own financial retirement plan.

The End of Growth: Adapting to Our New Economic Reality Review

The End of Growth: Adapting to Our New Economic Reality
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book over a month ago when it was first released through the Post Carbon Institute website. Then I ordered 2 more from Amazon, one for my town's library and one to loan out. I write this review now as the morning news on NPR reports that the democrats and republicans have come to some agreement on ending the debt ceiling crisis. If only that were good news, but apparently they have not read this book and unfortunately most likely never will. This book is the most important book you can read. It is written in a style that makes for easy understanding and were it not for its premise it could even be considered a pleasant read. But unfortunately it will not be read by enough people, not even enough people who you would like to think should read it. It is not fun entertainment, not even infotainment, and for some it is exactly what they don't want to read, a non-fiction book with dire news.
If you have read John Perkins and understand the difference between dream and fantasy as taught by the shamans of the Amazon, and have read Jared Diamonds "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed", and you then read this book, you will see how the "American Dream" is really an American "Fantasy" in which we through ignorance, avarice or, worse than either, denial, continue to build our own versions of Moai on a shrinking planet that increasingly resembles Easter Island except that our ocean is the vastly greater and even more inhospitable universe.
If you can read this book without being either an optimist or pessimist, but a rational thinking person, then your biggest battle may just be overcoming denial. Denial will tempt you to see technology and substitutions for energy and other dwindling non-renewable resources saving mankind, or it may allow you to seek the comfort of flimsy arguments claiming why this is just so much alarmist doom and gloom, or it may simply come in the form of going on with your life as you always have done because it is so much easier to simply ignore and deny it. Although Heinberg does offer some actions to be taken, they are not simple in the context of your typical community mentality. So between fighting off the continual temptations of denial, the denial or ignorance of others, or the unpleasant task of doing something other than something entertaining, our lives will never be as easy again.
If you have some knowledge of the difference between the economic philosophies of Keynes and Friedman and you have a tendency to lean toward one more than the other like I had before reading this book, then you should know that we have had a serious problem of not seeing the forest for the trees. Heinberg snapped me out of that blind trance with some simple undeniable facts. The problem now is that I have to wonder sometimes which state I rather be in, denial, in the dark, or aware of the truth.
In Diamond's book "Collapse..." regarding Easter Island he refers to the question "What was the man thinking who cut down the last tree?" Each one of us knows the answer. It is what we are thinking today as we go on with our own lives on a planet with finite resources.

Economists insist that recovery is at hand, yet unemployment remains high, real estate values continue to sink, and governments stagger under record deficits. The End of Growth proposes a startling diagnosis: humanity has reached a fundamental turning point in its economic history. The expansionary trajectory of industrial civilization is colliding with non-negotiable natural limits.
Richard Heinberg's latest landmark work goes to the heart of the ongoing financial crisis, explaining how and why it occurred, and what we must do to avert the worst potential outcomes. Written in an engaging, highly readable style, it shows why growth is being blocked by three factors:Resource depletionEnvironmental impactsCrushing levels of debt
These converging limits will force us to re-evaluate cherished economic theories and to reinvent money and commerce.
The End of Growth describes what policy makers, communities, and families can do to build a new economy that operates within Earth's budget of energy and resources. We can thrive during the transition if we set goals that promote human and environmental well-being, rather than continuing to pursue the now-unattainable prize of ever-expanding GDP.
Richard Heinberg is the author of nine previous books, including The Party's Over, Peak Everything, and Blackout. A senior fellow of the Post Carbon Institute, Heinberg is one of the world's foremost peak oil educators and an effective communicator of the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels.

This is not another journalist musing on the financial world. This is not an academic explanation of how financial instruments work. It's something else entirely -- a rare inside glimpse into the world of derivatives by a literate professional who's been a handshake away (or closer) from the major events in the market. Das leavens a series of technical discussions about particular strategies with more entertaining glimpses into the culture the drives the deals. Although I have bones to pick with the book's episodic structure, I can't think of a better way to get a crash course in how the capital markets really work.

You may seldom locate a book telling you one of the most practical aspect in recent regime of financial accountng - booking the derivatives. Nevertheless, it spent a few paragraphs together with some examples showing you the booking of three major types of derivatives in the financial market. Other topics also illustrate comprehensively the functioning of the derivatives as well as accompanied with various examples. Had it not been for the limited pages in explaining the booking methodology, it would have been the best derivatives related book that I have met before.

The Secrets of Economic Indicators: Hidden Clues to Future Economic Trends and Investment Opportunities, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

On any given weekday, stocks and bonds gyrate in response to some economic announcement.
Bernard Baumohl, a Time magazine economics writer with more than 20 years of experience, has written a guide to these indicators and their importance to the financial markets.
The book promises to become dog-eared quickly. In concise language it explains what Baumohl indicates are the most influential U. S. and International Economic Indicators. Beginning in Chapter 2, the author defines the phrases and concepts essential to an understanding of the indicators.
In Chapter 3 he jumps into the heart of the matter: U. S. economic indicators. Each indicator is evaluated using the following criteria:
*Why is it important?
*How is it computed?
*What does it day about the future?
*How might stocks, bonds and/or currencies react to its announcement?
In Chapter 4, he examines the 10 most influential foreign indicators using the same criteria.
In the final two chapters, Baumohl provides a list of web sites that compile economic data. What in the past costs thousands of dollars is available on the web at no cost.
If any facet of your life is effected by these indicators, you owe it to yourself to keep a copy of this book nearby.

"This is the real deal. Baumohl miraculously breathes life into economic indicators and statistics."–The Wall Street Journal"This is the most up-to-date guide to economic indicators and their importance to financial markets in print. The coverage of less-reported indicators, especially those from nongovernment sources, is hard to find elsewhere. The inclusion of the actual published tables helps the newer student of the markets find the data in the public release. For anyone trying to follow the economic data, this should be next to your computer so that you can understand and find the data on the Internet."–David Wyss, Chief Economist, Standard and Poor's"I find Baumohl's writing fascinating. In addition to the famous indicators, he includes many that I hadn't heard of. I really appreciate that he tells you exactly where to find each indicator on the Web. Just about anyone who's serious about understanding which way the economy is headed will want to read this book. It could be a classic."–Harry Domash, Columnist for MSN Money and Publisher, Winning Investing Newsletter"Bernie Baumohl has accomplished something of real value in The Secrets of Economic Indicators. He has successfully demystified the world of financial and economic news that bombards us in our daily lives. Both professional investors and casual observers of the world of finance and economics will be grateful for what he has done. The constant stream of heretofore bewildering news from the world of business and finance can now be easily understood. Every businessperson or investor should keep a copy of Baumohl's book close at hand as he or she catches up on the business, stock market, and economic events of the day. It is great, at long last, to have someone who has eliminated what may have been so perplexing to so many and to have done so with such remarkable clarity."–Hugh Johnson, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Johnson Illington Advisors"Bernie Baumohl has written a must-read educational and reference book that every individual investor will find indispensable for watching, monitoring, and interpreting the markets. The daily flow of high frequency economic indicators is the stuff that makes financial markets move and that can signal the big trends that make or break investor portfolios. Most important, Bernie's long experience in reporting economics for Time Magazine helps make the 'dismal science' lively and interesting."–Allen Sinai, President and Chief Global Economist, Decision Economics, Inc."Baumohl has a gift for taking a complicated subject and allowing it to read like a fast-moving novel. My confidence in reading and understanding economic indicators as portrayed in this book made me realize the possibilities this information holds for improving my personal net worth as well as navigating my business toward higher profits. I recommend this book if you care about your future finances."–Morris E. Lasky, CEO, Lodging Unlimited, Inc.; Manager and consultant for $6 billion in hotel assets; Chairman, Lodging Conference; Chairman, International Hotel Conference"I think this is an excellent book. It's well written, accessible to a variety of readers, deals with an interesting and important subject, and covers the topic well. It deserves to get a lot of notice and use."–D. Quinn Mills, Alfred J. Weatherhead, Jr., Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School"Economic statistics, employment data, Federal Reserve surveys. Think they are boring? Think again! They can drive markets into a frenzy, causing billions of dollars to be made or lost in an instant. Bernie Baumohl brilliantly, clearly, and, yes, entertainingly describes what every investor and business manager should know about economic indicators: which ones move markets, how to interpret them, and how to use them to spot and capitalize on future economic trends. The Secrets of Economic Indicators is an extraordinary and insightful work–an enormously important contribution to the body of financial literature. Read it and then keep it on your desk. Consult it the next time you are deluged with a flurry of economic statistics. Your understanding certainly will be enhanced, and your portfolio will likely be as well."–Robert Hormats, Vice Chairman, Goldman Sachs (International)"If you want to make money investing, this is an essential trend-tracking tool that will help get you to the bank. Appears selling calls may have been to slow for the author. He's figured out that he can make more money and faster by selling books and software subscriptions. And, even more money selling the same book to you twice. "Cash for Life" is a ripoff of his previous work "Covered Calls and Naked Puts". With the exception of his "Visions" methodology, it is literally word for word. Is it ethical to plagiarize your own work? It's like a student turning in the same work to two different teachers. While he may have updated his options trading examples and added a new methodology, this "new book" (to use the term loosely) should have been released as an updated edition to the earlier book. At the least, it should have been disclosed in the book's promotion and on his website. Could he have possibly given a discount to a buyer that had also purchased "Covered Calls and Naked Puts"?
His earlier book, "Covered Calls and Naked Puts", was a fair primer in selling covered calls. So, why didn't the author take this opportunity to introduce his "Visions" in a more advanced book with a new storyline. It would have been nice to see deeper discussions his investment reasonings rather than just rely upon his mathematical models. Here are some ideas. A chapter on "alternatives to letting yourself get assigned" (ie. covering the call; rolling forward, upward or downward; or buying it back when it premium is well below its initial sale and there is still significant time left til expiration) would be worthwhile even if this isn't the author's trading style. Also, a chapter on the "tax implications of options" should be included since there are some pretty obscure tax rules out there; they have their own variations of what is considered short-term and long-term transactions. And, what about the "wash-sale rule"? Is this something the options investor/trader needs to consider? I'll let you field that one Ronald.

I generally read fiction and, although, until recently, I worked in an area of law that dealt with finance, I am not a financial expert. But like most of my fellow Americans, I was interested in learning what an expert would say about the causes of the recent worldwide financial crisis. This book lays it out, methodically and logically but in an interesting, accessible style. It starts with the Depression and goes on from there. It discusses the governmental policies that encouraged the making of loans to borrowers of questionable creditworthiness. It dissects the financial models that were used. Most interestingly, it explains how, at each step, these financial models gave the lenders, and those associated with them, a personal motivation for making unsound loans. The conclusion is chilling.

In 2006 residential real estate prices peaked and started to fall, then threatened the world's financial institutions in 2007, and confronted the global economy with disaster in 2008.In the past few years, millions of people have lost very substantial portions of their wealth. And while the markets have rebounded considerably, they are still far from a full recovery. Now, professional economists, policy experts, public intellectuals, and the public at large are all struggling to understand the crisis that has engulfed us.In The Financial Crisis of Our Time, Robert W. Kolb provides an essential, comprehensive review of the context within which these events unfolded, arguing that while the crisis had no single cause, housing finance played a central role, and that to understand what happened, one must comprehend the mechanism by which the housing industry came into crisis. Kolb offers a history of the housing finance system as it developed throughout the twentieth century, and especially in the period from 1990 to 2006, showing how the originate-to-distribute model of mortgage financing presented market participants with a "clockwork of perverse incentives." In this system, various participants-simply by pursuing their narrow personal interests-participated in an elaborate mechanism that led to disaster. The book then gives a narrative of the crisis as it developed and analyzes all of the participants in the housing market, from the home buyers to investors in collaterialized debt obligations (CDOs). At each step, the book explains in a nontechnical manner the essential relationships among the market participants and zeroes in on the incentives facing each party. The book also includes an extensive glossary and a detailed, authoritative timeline of the subprime financial crisis.Offering a unique look at the participants and incentives within the housing finance industry and its role in the biggest financial catastrophe in recent history, Robert W. Kolb provides one of the most comprehensive and illuminating accounts of the events that will be studied for decades to come as the financial crisis of our time.

How to Raise a Family on Less Than Two Incomes: The Complete Guide to Managing Your Money Better So You Can Spend More Time with Your Kids
Average Reviews:

There is a big difference between "what we WANT in life" and "what we NEED in life." As a counsellor, I hear so many people with families say, "there is simply not enough money to go around," and in many cases, particularly single-parent families, that is true. However, in the case of many (and certainly not all) two-parent families, there WOULD be enough money to go around, if people had their priorities in order and actually knew how much they were spending on the "wants" in life, as opposed to the "needs. All the frills, luxuries, power lunches and expensive "play toys" i.e., cars, boats, motor homes and exotic vacations, can bring financial burden. Long after the novelty of the new "play toy" has worn off, the debt continues.
It is most unfortunate that all those who choose to live in a materialistic world, do not read this book before they lose sight of what is truly important in their life, and how short life is. The time, in the overall life cycle, that we have our children all to ourselves to enjoy is very short, indeed. Children need parents or a parent, depending on your family structure, to give them quality time and love far more than they need designer jeans and a car by the time they are sixteen. Sure, most kids would want those things; kids have a neat way of testing limits and boundaries, theirs and ours. All too often, it is the parents who are trying to compensate by giving their sons and daughters what they never had as children. But, at what cost?
This is an excellent book and highly recommended. It will make you think twice, not only about where you are spending your money, but how much quality time you actually spend with the greatest investment of your life - your children.

The first half was an excellent analysis of the mess we are in and how it will only get worse. Second 1/2 advice was fair, but not why to buy the book. Should have had more evaluation of what happens as a consequence of this problem, rather than his case studies. Worth the first 1/2 but a bit disappointing after that. Read it, then HS Dent's "The Great Depression Ahead" and you will have a real game plan.

A clear look at how to capture investment profits during difficult financial times

The U.S. economy has become crippled by the credit and real estate catastrophe. Even though we've all been affected by the calamity and have heard no shortage of news about it, it still seems unfathomable and utterly incomprehensible to most people that the actions of certain mortgage brokers, bankers, ratings agencies, and investment banks could break the economic engine of the world.
Now, for the first time, and in terms everyone can grasp, noted analysts and value investing experts Whitney Tilson and Glenn Tongue explain not only how it happened, but shows that the tsunami of credit problems isn't over. The second wave has yet to come. But if you know catastrophe is looming, you can sidestep the train wreck-and even profit. You just need to understand how bad times present opportunity and where to look. More Mortgage Meltdown can help you achieve this goal. The book
Breaks down the complex mortgage products and rocket-science securities Wall Street created
Addresses how to find investment opportunities within the rubble and position your portfolio to take advantage of the crisis
Explains exactly how the combination of aggressive lending, government missteps, and Wall Street trading practices created the perfect economic storm

The Wealth Code: How the Rich Stay Rich in Good Times and Bad.

Having been in this business too many years to admit to, I can tell you I've read book after book from the Wall Street talking heads. What you usually get is blah, blah, blah about the same old thing...asset allocation, make sure you own stocks and bonds to be "diversified," Nobel-Prize winning Modern Portfolio Theory, don't pay fees, blah, blah, blah. In this easy-to-read guide book, Vanclef comes out with a refreshing look at how wealth is built - and how to keep it in good and bad times. His multi-legged table metaphor really resonates as he explains how to keep different streams of income coming from different investments - and none, by the way, tied to the ups and downs of the stock market.
My favorite part was in Chapter 4 - a part called Brokerisms. What a laugh! And how true. For anyone who is fed up with what Wall Street know-it-alls spit out in the Journal, on Bloomberg or on CNBC, pick up this book and get the real deal - BRAVO to this author for having the guts to tell the truth!

Jerry Robinson's timely read, "The Bankruptcy of our Nation", should have come out a year or so ago. But would we have paid attention to this message then? Maybe, but probably not. I know of several other books on this subject that have accurately watched trends and foretold of our current state of affairs that too few people read. But now that we're right in the midst of the economic madness, Robinson offers insight into various aspects of what is affecting our national and global financial issues including world banking, oil, the bailout, and historical perspective. This section is necessary so that we may be aware of trends and how history repeats itself. However, if the reader would only take note of the 12 key strategies the author presents to protect and build the reader's financial state, that would be worth picking up this book. Free online resources, sound Biblical advice and timeless quotes from admirable sources round out the text.

Ready, Fire, Aim: Zero to $100 Million in No Time Flat (Agora Series) Review

Ready, Fire, Aim: Zero to $100 Million in No Time Flat (Agora Series)

I enjoy the occasional book on marketing and how to acheive success. The cover blurbs for "Ready, Aim, Fire" seemed promising as did some of the Amazon reviews. So I figured why not.
I can now answer the question "why not" in detail and at length.
First, the good news. Michael Masterson does a reasonably good job of distilling the advice offered in dozens of other books on advertising and marketing, from Napoleon Hill to Rosse Reeve's "Reality In Advertising". However, the solid advice gleaned from those classics is diluted with Masterson's endless preening and outright bragging.
The overall experience is not necessarily enjoyable or instructive, unless you are inspired by someone telling you, over and over and over again, of how successful and great he is.
A careful reading led me to become very suspicious of Michael Masterson and to do some quick research. Masterson claims to have had titles on the New York Times, Wall St. Journal and Amazon best seller lists. Indeed, on two occasions - and that means two distinct dates - Masterson was on the Wall St. Journal best seller list. This is not like being on that list week after week: it was twice for one time each. As for the New York Times, a Nexis search shows Michael Masterson appearing in the Times just once, with a comment in an article. No appearances on their best seller list. Amazon's best seller lists are very different and appearing on them is on meaningless. It is said that having 30 friends order a book at the same time will put you on their best sellers list for a little while at least.
More disturbing are Masterson's associations, one of which is Agora International, which publishes a number of investment newsletters which seem to be of the "we have a tip for you" variety. Agora was sued for fraud by the SEC at one point. This does not reflect directly on Masterson since he claims a nebulous role of "consultant" with them. It does, however, reflect on the company he keeps.
The company he keeps also includes AWAI, American Artists & Writers, Inc. Masterson doesn't say that he authored a product for them, a course on copywriting. Both AWAI and Masterson are the subject of literally hundreds of online complaints.
As I said, much of this book is borrowed and adapted. I don't have a problem with that since solid knowledge is intended to be passed on, as long as it is not plagarized in violation of copyright laws. But even here, Masterson leaves himself open to question. He attributes the concept of the "unique selling proposition" to a 1980 book called "Positioning". In fact, Rosser Reeves first put forth the expression and the concept in his 1961 "Reality In Advertising".
Would I recommend that someone read this book? Sort of. It is an adequate distillation of marketing advice from many reputable sources. To his credit, Masterson doesn't claim to be the original thinking here. On the other hand, Masterson's personal credibility is questionable and you really have to take what he says of his own success with a very large grain of salt. Personally I think there are better books in this area to be found.
Jerry

Jesus and Money: A Guide for Times of Financial Crisis Review

Jesus and Money: A Guide for Times of Financial Crisis

This is one of Witherington's best books. It is a sharp critique of our materialistic, consumer oriented, self-centered society. The author takes proponents of the health wealth gospel to task and points out that financial resources are to be used to support the needs of our families and for the furtherance of the gospel message. Witherington expertly interprets both Old and New Testament texts related to money and possessions and challenges believers to live fiscally frugal lives for Christ. Highly recommended!
