Bankruptcy of Our Nation: 12 Key Strategies for Protecting Your Finances in These Uncertain Times Review

Jerry Robinson's timely read, "The Bankruptcy of our Nation", should have come out a year or so ago. But would we have paid attention to this message then? Maybe, but probably not. I know of several other books on this subject that have accurately watched trends and foretold of our current state of affairs that too few people read. But now that we're right in the midst of the economic madness, Robinson offers insight into various aspects of what is affecting our national and global financial issues including world banking, oil, the bailout, and historical perspective. This section is necessary so that we may be aware of trends and how history repeats itself. However, if the reader would only take note of the 12 key strategies the author presents to protect and build the reader's financial state, that would be worth picking up this book. Free online resources, sound Biblical advice and timeless quotes from admirable sources round out the text.

Depression 2.0: Creative Strategies for Tough Economic Times (Process Self-reliance Series) Review

Depression 2.0: Creative Strategies for Tough Economic Times (Process Self-reliance Series)

This book promises a lot and delivers very little. It can be described as a mixture of 1) A vague retelling of what caused our economic woes, 2) Obvious "advice" such as reminding you that in hard times you can move back in with your parents, and 3) Stern admonitions about how decadent modern society is and how much better off we'd all be if our standard of living is reduced to roughly that of the medieval peasant engaged in subsistence farming and participating in a barter economy.
Now, I'm an odd enough person that I more or less agree with this last point. The trouble is that not only does Depression 2.0 contain very few actual "strategies" for coping with such an eventuality, but what it does have to tell us is written in such a self-righteous, heavy-handed manner that even as sympathetic a person as myself felt condescended to and marginalized.
What practical "strategies" this book does contain are more along the lines of making it through a tough but relatively short-lived recession, such as dumpster diving and hanging out at the library for free entertainment. If you're looking for actual tips on how to weather the big one, this is not the book for you. In fact, I can't think of any situation in which I'd recommend this book to anybody. No matter what you hope to learn, it can be learned much better elsewhere.
While the list of topics in the book's description is impressive, you will be amazed at the actual size of the book, as it is quite slim. Consequently, I found that most of the book consists of what would work well as overviews of large sections of useful, practical content, but that, unfortunately, that actual content is not there. Being told that it's a good idea to do something is nice; being told how to do it would be better.
If you are interested in real advice, practical strategies, and solid how-tos, I highly recommend "The Urban Homestead" from the same publisher. That will teach you to do everything from collecting rainwater for irrigation to baking bread to setting up a chicken coop to heating your house without electricity. Much handier to have around if things continue to get worse, and there's no reason to believe that they won't.

The Essential Guide for First-Time Homeowners: Maximize Your Investment & Enjoy Your New Home (USA Today/Nolo Series) Review

The Essential Guide for First-Time Homeowners: Maximize Your Investment and Enjoy Your New Home (USA Today/Nolo Series)
Average Reviews:

This is not so much an "Essential Guide" as it is a collection of mostly-useful tips, diluted with a lot of cute fluff. For example, there is a chapter with lots of bullet point lists for handling disputes with neighbors, along with a cookie recipe so you can "Woo the Neighbors With These Chocolate-Filled Cookies".
The book tries to cover too many subjects (home maintenance, real estate finance, neighbor law, etc.) and ends up with insufficient detail. The chapter on home maintenance contains a brief schedule of things to check in each month, but what is a first-time homeowner going to get out of the recommendation to "Test the pressure and temperature valve on your water heater by opening it and allowing some water to flow out"? As with most of the tips, a bit more detail telling the reader how to do this would make the advice useful instead of just nagging.
Most of the tips are helpful if incomplete, and most first-time homeowners would benefit from skimming this book. But the book should not be considered a substitute for a real reference on any of the subjects it covers.

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy: Keep Your Property & Repay Debts Over Time Review

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy: Keep Your Property & Repay Debts Over Time
I needed to file Chapter 13 to pay off approximately $7000 in delinquent taxes that could not be discharged in a Chapter 7. I contacted several local Chapter 13 attorneys in the San Diego area for free consultations. Each one wanted to charge at least $3500.00 to represent me and wanted between $1000.00 to $1500.00 to be paid prior to them filing the bankruptcy paperwork with the court. If I had that kind of money, I would have been trying to work out something with the IRS.
I bought this book and read it cover to cover several times. When I knew I was ready, I completed the forms required to file in my district, California Southern District. My expense was $274.00 in cash for the filing fees. I filed on 4/17/09 and had my 341(a) hearing on 5/22/09. The court schedules a hearing at the same time for many people.
During the hearing, I was getting nervous as several people that were represented by attorneys were called in front of the Chapter 13 Trustee ahead of me and were either having their hearings continued to a new date or having a Confirmation hearing scheduled due to discrepancies in their filed paperwork (this was paperwork prepared and filed by their attorneys!!!). In the California Southern District, a 341(a)hearing is rescheduled or a Confirmation hearing is scheduled if the Chapter 13 Trustee thinks there is a presumption of abuse of the bankruptcy laws, objects to the plan or a creditor has an objection to the plan.
When I was called up, I only had to answer a few basic questions (name, address, what do you do you do for a living, how much are you paid, is that hourly, weekly, monthly and how many hours per day, week or month do you work) and provide copies of my IRS tax returns for 4 years (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008)to verify that I have had stable income. The Chapter 13 Trustee stated he did not find a presumption of abuse, recommended that my plan be confirmed and is submitting the Request for Plan Confirmation to the Chapter 13 bankruptcy judge for sign-off. It took less than 10 minutes.
I could not have done it without the invaluable assistance of this book.
