The Age of Deleveraging: Investment Strategies for a Decade of Slow Growth and Deflation Review

The Age of Deleveraging: Investment Strategies for a Decade of Slow Growth and Deflation

I am not familiar with Schilling but he manages money and writes a newsletter from a quick perusal of his website. However, the book states that he does not yet manage money (but he is already a bit old). The book is really in three parts:
1. The first third of the books deals with recommendations the author made to his clients roughly from 1988 to 2008. Clearly the author is a bit full of himself here. That is allowed because he seems to have made some good calls. I suppose the author needs to establish his track record somehow. However, most people wouldn't find this section terribly interesting. At least the author has made a decent job editing the text, which presumably originates from his newsletter. However, the section might be interesting for life-long students that want to understand the author's thought process in more detail. For those a key problem is that he only discusses his successful predictions. Maybe he has loads of predictions that didn't pan out. So while there is value in history, this section is problematic.
2. The second third deals with themes that currently preoccupies the author. We are not going to see anything like the bull market which lasted from 1982 to 2000. Instead we'll get deflation. This discussion is quite interesting. However, this is a contrarian viewpoint so I would really have liked more depth and crispness in the arguments. He should also address the contents of his 1998 book called "Deflation", because if he has called "deflation" for over a decade her will lose credibility.
3. The final third deals with investment recommendations for the next decade. I'm not terribly impressed by this section. Some of these recommendations are a bit naive, like don't buy antiques because they're illiquid. Other ideas are clearly more serious, like buy consumer staples stocks. The nagging question is that I don't know if the author still keeps his best ideas exclusive to his newsletter subscribers. I would have liked the author to raise this issue himself.
The language is not very technical at all. I think most people who end up reading my review can easily read the book. Personally I find the book very verbose. He is kind of writing to a not-so-knowledgeable wealthy person. If you have some basic economics courses under your belt, some of the book will feel quite tedious.
Judging the quality of non-fiction is different from judging a novel. I really don't like the verbose style of writing, so style is equivalent to two stars. However, it is really the insights and quality of recommendations that is the important. For problems listed above that is three or four stars. So in conclusion three stars (i.e. useful if you read many books, but certainly not your first choice on the topic).

This book is very easy to follow (compared to Greene's econometrics), but it still manages to cover advanced level of econometrics modeling.

This textbook teaches some of the basic econometric methods and the underlying assumptions behind them. It also includes a simple and concise treatment of more advanced topics in spatial correlation, panel data, limited dependent variables, regression diagnostics, specification testing and time series analysis. Each chapter has a set of theoretical exercises as well as empirical illustrations using real economic applications. These empirical exercises usually replicate a published article using Stata or Eviews.

The End of Growth: Adapting to Our New Economic Reality Review

The End of Growth: Adapting to Our New Economic Reality
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book over a month ago when it was first released through the Post Carbon Institute website. Then I ordered 2 more from Amazon, one for my town's library and one to loan out. I write this review now as the morning news on NPR reports that the democrats and republicans have come to some agreement on ending the debt ceiling crisis. If only that were good news, but apparently they have not read this book and unfortunately most likely never will. This book is the most important book you can read. It is written in a style that makes for easy understanding and were it not for its premise it could even be considered a pleasant read. But unfortunately it will not be read by enough people, not even enough people who you would like to think should read it. It is not fun entertainment, not even infotainment, and for some it is exactly what they don't want to read, a non-fiction book with dire news.
If you have read John Perkins and understand the difference between dream and fantasy as taught by the shamans of the Amazon, and have read Jared Diamonds "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed", and you then read this book, you will see how the "American Dream" is really an American "Fantasy" in which we through ignorance, avarice or, worse than either, denial, continue to build our own versions of Moai on a shrinking planet that increasingly resembles Easter Island except that our ocean is the vastly greater and even more inhospitable universe.
If you can read this book without being either an optimist or pessimist, but a rational thinking person, then your biggest battle may just be overcoming denial. Denial will tempt you to see technology and substitutions for energy and other dwindling non-renewable resources saving mankind, or it may allow you to seek the comfort of flimsy arguments claiming why this is just so much alarmist doom and gloom, or it may simply come in the form of going on with your life as you always have done because it is so much easier to simply ignore and deny it. Although Heinberg does offer some actions to be taken, they are not simple in the context of your typical community mentality. So between fighting off the continual temptations of denial, the denial or ignorance of others, or the unpleasant task of doing something other than something entertaining, our lives will never be as easy again.
If you have some knowledge of the difference between the economic philosophies of Keynes and Friedman and you have a tendency to lean toward one more than the other like I had before reading this book, then you should know that we have had a serious problem of not seeing the forest for the trees. Heinberg snapped me out of that blind trance with some simple undeniable facts. The problem now is that I have to wonder sometimes which state I rather be in, denial, in the dark, or aware of the truth.
In Diamond's book "Collapse..." regarding Easter Island he refers to the question "What was the man thinking who cut down the last tree?" Each one of us knows the answer. It is what we are thinking today as we go on with our own lives on a planet with finite resources.

Economists insist that recovery is at hand, yet unemployment remains high, real estate values continue to sink, and governments stagger under record deficits. The End of Growth proposes a startling diagnosis: humanity has reached a fundamental turning point in its economic history. The expansionary trajectory of industrial civilization is colliding with non-negotiable natural limits.
Richard Heinberg's latest landmark work goes to the heart of the ongoing financial crisis, explaining how and why it occurred, and what we must do to avert the worst potential outcomes. Written in an engaging, highly readable style, it shows why growth is being blocked by three factors:Resource depletionEnvironmental impactsCrushing levels of debt
These converging limits will force us to re-evaluate cherished economic theories and to reinvent money and commerce.
The End of Growth describes what policy makers, communities, and families can do to build a new economy that operates within Earth's budget of energy and resources. We can thrive during the transition if we set goals that promote human and environmental well-being, rather than continuing to pursue the now-unattainable prize of ever-expanding GDP.
Richard Heinberg is the author of nine previous books, including The Party's Over, Peak Everything, and Blackout. A senior fellow of the Post Carbon Institute, Heinberg is one of the world's foremost peak oil educators and an effective communicator of the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels.

The History of the World's Greatest Entrepreneurs: The Biography of Success Review

The History of the World's Greatest Entrepreneurs: The Biography of Success
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book because I heard it was derived from a 7 year study of around 150 of the world's greatest entrepreneurs throughout all time and then condensed down into a selection of just 45.
This book features great entrepreneurs across a 1000 year span from Godric to Gates. For each entrepreneur we're given a mini biography which is written in an entertaining but yet educational fashion. Its a heavy weight book at 500 pages but very easy to dip in and out of. Almost like an encyclopaedia or dictionary of the greatest entrepreneurs.
Napoleon Hill studied all the World's great entrepreneurs before writing his book "Think & Grow Rich". Now the study has been done for us we can pick a success model to work with from this crystallized selection of just 45 of the World's Greatest! If you want to know how some of those deals happened, how to win in business, how to keep getting up each time, get material to support your strategy and mindset going forward then this book is a must! Must! Must!
Just bought 2 for father's day, my son's graduation, my sisters birthday. I think everyone should have one.
(Phew, I suppose you can tell I love it eh!).

Managerial Economics & Business Strategy Review

Managerial Economics and Business Strategy
Average Reviews:

This book provides an excellent background for learning applied managerial economics. Mr. Baye uses interesting real-world examples, which is difficult when writing about the entirely hypothetical world of micro-economics. I felt that the section on Game Theory was especially useful in explaining real world market paricipant behavior in pricing decisions. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for both students of economics, as well as those non-students seeking a weekend of light reading in the topic of economics.

Baye's Managerial Economics and Business Strategy remains the best-selling managerial economics textbook. It was the first textbook to provide students with the tools from intermediate microeconomics, game theory, and industrial organization to make sound managerial decisions.Baye is known for his real-world examples, frontier research, inclusion of modern topics not found in other managerial books, as well as balanced coverage of traditional and modern microeconomic tools. The Sixth Edition retains all of these signature features, and it includes a number of new class-tested features. These include enhanced pedagogical features such as learning objectives, new and updated business applications, additional end-of-chapter problems, better prose, and updated data.Additionally, the Time Warner Case, introduced last edition, is strengthened in the Sixth Edition with detailed teaching notes and nine additional end-of-case problems.

The Secrets of Economic Indicators: Hidden Clues to Future Economic Trends and Investment Opportunities, 2nd Edition Review

The Secrets of Economic Indicators: Hidden Clues to Future Economic Trends and Investment Opportunities, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

On any given weekday, stocks and bonds gyrate in response to some economic announcement.
Bernard Baumohl, a Time magazine economics writer with more than 20 years of experience, has written a guide to these indicators and their importance to the financial markets.
The book promises to become dog-eared quickly. In concise language it explains what Baumohl indicates are the most influential U. S. and International Economic Indicators. Beginning in Chapter 2, the author defines the phrases and concepts essential to an understanding of the indicators.
In Chapter 3 he jumps into the heart of the matter: U. S. economic indicators. Each indicator is evaluated using the following criteria:
*Why is it important?
*How is it computed?
*What does it day about the future?
*How might stocks, bonds and/or currencies react to its announcement?
In Chapter 4, he examines the 10 most influential foreign indicators using the same criteria.
In the final two chapters, Baumohl provides a list of web sites that compile economic data. What in the past costs thousands of dollars is available on the web at no cost.
If any facet of your life is effected by these indicators, you owe it to yourself to keep a copy of this book nearby.

"This is the real deal. Baumohl miraculously breathes life into economic indicators and statistics."–The Wall Street Journal"This is the most up-to-date guide to economic indicators and their importance to financial markets in print. The coverage of less-reported indicators, especially those from nongovernment sources, is hard to find elsewhere. The inclusion of the actual published tables helps the newer student of the markets find the data in the public release. For anyone trying to follow the economic data, this should be next to your computer so that you can understand and find the data on the Internet."–David Wyss, Chief Economist, Standard and Poor's"I find Baumohl's writing fascinating. In addition to the famous indicators, he includes many that I hadn't heard of. I really appreciate that he tells you exactly where to find each indicator on the Web. Just about anyone who's serious about understanding which way the economy is headed will want to read this book. It could be a classic."–Harry Domash, Columnist for MSN Money and Publisher, Winning Investing Newsletter"Bernie Baumohl has accomplished something of real value in The Secrets of Economic Indicators. He has successfully demystified the world of financial and economic news that bombards us in our daily lives. Both professional investors and casual observers of the world of finance and economics will be grateful for what he has done. The constant stream of heretofore bewildering news from the world of business and finance can now be easily understood. Every businessperson or investor should keep a copy of Baumohl's book close at hand as he or she catches up on the business, stock market, and economic events of the day. It is great, at long last, to have someone who has eliminated what may have been so perplexing to so many and to have done so with such remarkable clarity."–Hugh Johnson, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Johnson Illington Advisors"Bernie Baumohl has written a must-read educational and reference book that every individual investor will find indispensable for watching, monitoring, and interpreting the markets. The daily flow of high frequency economic indicators is the stuff that makes financial markets move and that can signal the big trends that make or break investor portfolios. Most important, Bernie's long experience in reporting economics for Time Magazine helps make the 'dismal science' lively and interesting."–Allen Sinai, President and Chief Global Economist, Decision Economics, Inc."Baumohl has a gift for taking a complicated subject and allowing it to read like a fast-moving novel. My confidence in reading and understanding economic indicators as portrayed in this book made me realize the possibilities this information holds for improving my personal net worth as well as navigating my business toward higher profits. I recommend this book if you care about your future finances."–Morris E. Lasky, CEO, Lodging Unlimited, Inc.; Manager and consultant for $6 billion in hotel assets; Chairman, Lodging Conference; Chairman, International Hotel Conference"I think this is an excellent book. It's well written, accessible to a variety of readers, deals with an interesting and important subject, and covers the topic well. It deserves to get a lot of notice and use."–D. Quinn Mills, Alfred J. Weatherhead, Jr., Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School"Economic statistics, employment data, Federal Reserve surveys. Think they are boring? Think again! They can drive markets into a frenzy, causing billions of dollars to be made or lost in an instant. Bernie Baumohl brilliantly, clearly, and, yes, entertainingly describes what every investor and business manager should know about economic indicators: which ones move markets, how to interpret them, and how to use them to spot and capitalize on future economic trends. The Secrets of Economic Indicators is an extraordinary and insightful work–an enormously important contribution to the body of financial literature. Read it and then keep it on your desk. Consult it the next time you are deluged with a flurry of economic statistics. Your understanding certainly will be enhanced, and your portfolio will likely be as well."–Robert Hormats, Vice Chairman, Goldman Sachs (International)"If you want to make money investing, this is an essential trend-tracking tool that will help get you to the bank. The Financial Crisis of Our Time (Financial Management Association Survey and Synthesis)
Average Reviews:

I generally read fiction and, although, until recently, I worked in an area of law that dealt with finance, I am not a financial expert. But like most of my fellow Americans, I was interested in learning what an expert would say about the causes of the recent worldwide financial crisis. This book lays it out, methodically and logically but in an interesting, accessible style. It starts with the Depression and goes on from there. It discusses the governmental policies that encouraged the making of loans to borrowers of questionable creditworthiness. It dissects the financial models that were used. Most interestingly, it explains how, at each step, these financial models gave the lenders, and those associated with them, a personal motivation for making unsound loans. The conclusion is chilling.

In 2006 residential real estate prices peaked and started to fall, then threatened the world's financial institutions in 2007, and confronted the global economy with disaster in 2008.In the past few years, millions of people have lost very substantial portions of their wealth. And while the markets have rebounded considerably, they are still far from a full recovery. Now, professional economists, policy experts, public intellectuals, and the public at large are all struggling to understand the crisis that has engulfed us.In The Financial Crisis of Our Time, Robert W. Kolb provides an essential, comprehensive review of the context within which these events unfolded, arguing that while the crisis had no single cause, housing finance played a central role, and that to understand what happened, one must comprehend the mechanism by which the housing industry came into crisis. Kolb offers a history of the housing finance system as it developed throughout the twentieth century, and especially in the period from 1990 to 2006, showing how the originate-to-distribute model of mortgage financing presented market participants with a "clockwork of perverse incentives." In this system, various participants-simply by pursuing their narrow personal interests-participated in an elaborate mechanism that led to disaster. The book then gives a narrative of the crisis as it developed and analyzes all of the participants in the housing market, from the home buyers to investors in collaterialized debt obligations (CDOs). At each step, the book explains in a nontechnical manner the essential relationships among the market participants and zeroes in on the incentives facing each party. The book also includes an extensive glossary and a detailed, authoritative timeline of the subprime financial crisis.Offering a unique look at the participants and incentives within the housing finance industry and its role in the biggest financial catastrophe in recent history, Robert W. Kolb provides one of the most comprehensive and illuminating accounts of the events that will be studied for decades to come as the financial crisis of our time.

The first half was an excellent analysis of the mess we are in and how it will only get worse. Second 1/2 advice was fair, but not why to buy the book. Should have had more evaluation of what happens as a consequence of this problem, rather than his case studies. Worth the first 1/2 but a bit disappointing after that. Read it, then HS Dent's "The Great Depression Ahead" and you will have a real game plan.

A clear look at how to capture investment profits during difficult financial times

The U.S. economy has become crippled by the credit and real estate catastrophe. Even though we've all been affected by the calamity and have heard no shortage of news about it, it still seems unfathomable and utterly incomprehensible to most people that the actions of certain mortgage brokers, bankers, ratings agencies, and investment banks could break the economic engine of the world.
Now, for the first time, and in terms everyone can grasp, noted analysts and value investing experts Whitney Tilson and Glenn Tongue explain not only how it happened, but shows that the tsunami of credit problems isn't over. The second wave has yet to come. But if you know catastrophe is looming, you can sidestep the train wreck-and even profit. You just need to understand how bad times present opportunity and where to look. More Mortgage Meltdown can help you achieve this goal. The book
Breaks down the complex mortgage products and rocket-science securities Wall Street created
Addresses how to find investment opportunities within the rubble and position your portfolio to take advantage of the crisis
Explains exactly how the combination of aggressive lending, government missteps, and Wall Street trading practices created the perfect economic storm
Shows you why the crisis is not yet over and what we can expect going forward

More Mortgage Meltdown can help you understand the events that have unfolded, and put you in a better position to profit from the opportunities that arise during these tough financial times.

When you look at the goals of this book they are things like develop a methodology that works, using common tools like PERT, CPM, setting up communications within the team; in essence the real things that make a project successful. This also means that you learn enough that if you want to take the PMP test, you have the background and understanding to pass it.
This is the fourth edition of a book initially published in 1991. As the author says, it is written for the practitioner rather than the classroom. There are a number of books on passing the PMP exam. Most of them teach to the questions on the test without going into what you are really trying to do as a project manager. This book is different. It covers what it really takes to manage a project, and it does so with words that are easy to understand with photographs that are meaningful to the text.
This is the best book I know of to use when you really want to understand what project management is all about.

Having been in this business too many years to admit to, I can tell you I've read book after book from the Wall Street talking heads. What you usually get is blah, blah, blah about the same old thing...asset allocation, make sure you own stocks and bonds to be "diversified," Nobel-Prize winning Modern Portfolio Theory, don't pay fees, blah, blah, blah. In this easy-to-read guide book, Vanclef comes out with a refreshing look at how wealth is built - and how to keep it in good and bad times. His multi-legged table metaphor really resonates as he explains how to keep different streams of income coming from different investments - and none, by the way, tied to the ups and downs of the stock market.
My favorite part was in Chapter 4 - a part called Brokerisms. What a laugh! And how true. For anyone who is fed up with what Wall Street know-it-alls spit out in the Journal, on Bloomberg or on CNBC, pick up this book and get the real deal - BRAVO to this author for having the guts to tell the truth!

Jerry Robinson's timely read, "The Bankruptcy of our Nation", should have come out a year or so ago. But would we have paid attention to this message then? Maybe, but probably not. I know of several other books on this subject that have accurately watched trends and foretold of our current state of affairs that too few people read. But now that we're right in the midst of the economic madness, Robinson offers insight into various aspects of what is affecting our national and global financial issues including world banking, oil, the bailout, and historical perspective. This section is necessary so that we may be aware of trends and how history repeats itself. However, if the reader would only take note of the 12 key strategies the author presents to protect and build the reader's financial state, that would be worth picking up this book. Free online resources, sound Biblical advice and timeless quotes from admirable sources round out the text.

Economics Does Not Lie: A Defense of the Free Market in a Time of Crisis
Average Reviews:

Well, first off, most of my writing concerns culture and I'm always looking for educational sources that can bolster my knowledge of economics and I certainly found one here in Guy Sorman's defense of the free market. What's the answer to our current crisis? More government spending--no, just kidding. It's allowing the people to keep the money that they earn. That's the true meaning of social justice. We need that mentality instilled in our leadership...now more than ever! Due to my own interests, the last chapter, "Will the Greenhouse Effect Leave Us Broke," was the one I found most valuable. With somehow perfect timing, the House just passed Cap and Steal so Sorman's commentary is very topical. There's no question that leftist attempts to sabotage our economy in the name of saving the world are a total boondoggle and I found his solution--allow for innovation--inspiring. I also thought his deconstruction of Nicholas Stern was outstanding. The whole book is great though.

In the 20th century, privatization and market capitalism have reconstructed Eastern Europe and lifted 800 million people - in China, Brazil, and India - out of poverty. In Economics Does Not Lie, noted French journalist Guy Sorman reveals that behind this unprecedented growth is not only the collapse of state socialism but also a scientific revolution in economics - one that is as of yet dimly understood by the public but increasingly embraced by policymakers around the globe.

A Nation Transformed by Information: How Information Has Shaped the United States from Colonial Times to the Present Review

A Nation Transformed by Information: How Information Has Shaped the United States from Colonial Times to the Present
Average Reviews:

This book is a collection of essays on the movement of information, and how it has transformed the United States from its colonial beginnings to today. At the very beginning, the founders of the country subsidized the transportation of newspapers through the postal system; this allowed the free flow of information between cities and states, across the entire continent. As technology increased, it inevitably speeded and expanded the amount of information flowing throughout the country--from the railroad, through the telegraph, telephone, radio, motion pictures, television, and on into computers.
This book is an exciting history of information media. Though written by no less than seven contributors, it pulls together into seamless whole, almost as if written by one author. The depth of information is breathtaking, and the conclusions reached are fascinating. Indeed, I think that they admirably proved their contention that there was continuity in the development of information media, and I myself repeatedly saw history repeat itself through their narrative, right up to today.
This is a fascinating book, and one that I recommend without reservation.

Mathematics for Economics & Business Review

Mathematics for Economics and Business

This is a very good book for undergraduate students in Socials Sciences that wish to deep their knowledge on Mathematics and Economics. Its intended audience is clearly undergrad social sciences students that don't have a solid preparation on Mathematics. The book is full with pratice problems that will help you across the different chapters. The authors analyses several fundamental issues such as functions, matrices, derivatives, partial derivatives, a first approach to optimization, integrals and a first dynamics analysis - a good introduction to Difference Equations and Differential Equations.
If you are an undergrad without solid preparation on Mathematics, and wish to understand the mechanics of Economics, then this is a good option.

StraightLine Leadership: Tools for Living with Velocity and Power in Turbulent Times Review

StraightLine Leadership: Tools for Living with Velocity and Power in Turbulent Times

I bought this book mainly for the wide range of superstars from several industries who endorsed the book. This book is endorsed by United States Army Generals, NFL football players, corporate CEO's and New York Times best selling authors. I was not disappointed. This is my second reading and certainly not my last. It is packed with practical information most of which is totally new to me and I have been in the business world for over 30 years.

The book is about how people can build or train themselves to be much more effective in their personal and professional lives. This book is not just for CEO's or high level executives. Anyone wanting to be more effective and or solve a challenge will benefit immensely from this book if they apply the information.

There is a very useful chapter on "Stop Stopping." That's right many people in life stop before they get to their intended goals or objectives. The tools or "distinctions" as the author refers to them are effective in breaking through a lot of the self-sabotaging activities people engage in. I have been working with this material with my own staff at work and we have all found this material extremely useful in dealing with challenges that we have been struggling with for some time.

Depression 2.0: Creative Strategies for Tough Economic Times (Process Self-reliance Series) Review

Depression 2.0: Creative Strategies for Tough Economic Times (Process Self-reliance Series)

This book promises a lot and delivers very little. It can be described as a mixture of 1) A vague retelling of what caused our economic woes, 2) Obvious "advice" such as reminding you that in hard times you can move back in with your parents, and 3) Stern admonitions about how decadent modern society is and how much better off we'd all be if our standard of living is reduced to roughly that of the medieval peasant engaged in subsistence farming and participating in a barter economy.
Now, I'm an odd enough person that I more or less agree with this last point. The trouble is that not only does Depression 2.0 contain very few actual "strategies" for coping with such an eventuality, but what it does have to tell us is written in such a self-righteous, heavy-handed manner that even as sympathetic a person as myself felt condescended to and marginalized.
What practical "strategies" this book does contain are more along the lines of making it through a tough but relatively short-lived recession, such as dumpster diving and hanging out at the library for free entertainment. If you're looking for actual tips on how to weather the big one, this is not the book for you. In fact, I can't think of any situation in which I'd recommend this book to anybody. No matter what you hope to learn, it can be learned much better elsewhere.
While the list of topics in the book's description is impressive, you will be amazed at the actual size of the book, as it is quite slim. Consequently, I found that most of the book consists of what would work well as overviews of large sections of useful, practical content, but that, unfortunately, that actual content is not there. Being told that it's a good idea to do something is nice; being told how to do it would be better.
If you are interested in real advice, practical strategies, and solid how-tos, I highly recommend "The Urban Homestead" from the same publisher. That will teach you to do everything from collecting rainwater for irrigation to baking bread to setting up a chicken coop to heating your house without electricity. Much handier to have around if things continue to get worse, and there's no reason to believe that they won't.
