Finding #1 Stocks: Screening, Backtesting and Time-Proven Strategies (The Zacks Series)

I have been a long time reader of Kevin Matras' on Zacks.com. His Screen of the Week articles have been a consistent source of great investment strategies and top picks. So when I heard that he wrote a book on stock screening, I knew I had to get a copy. And I am so glad I did.
This is a breakthrough work on how to make stock screening accesible to the average investor. Yet still provide advanced ideas for long time screeners like myself.
Long story short, there is simply no way that someone can read Finding #1 Stocks without getting profitable investment ideas that will pay for the book many times over.

You may seldom locate a book telling you one of the most practical aspect in recent regime of financial accountng - booking the derivatives. Nevertheless, it spent a few paragraphs together with some examples showing you the booking of three major types of derivatives in the financial market. Other topics also illustrate comprehensively the functioning of the derivatives as well as accompanied with various examples. Had it not been for the limited pages in explaining the booking methodology, it would have been the best derivatives related book that I have met before.

On any given weekday, stocks and bonds gyrate in response to some economic announcement.
Bernard Baumohl, a Time magazine economics writer with more than 20 years of experience, has written a guide to these indicators and their importance to the financial markets.
The book promises to become dog-eared quickly. In concise language it explains what Baumohl indicates are the most influential U. S. and International Economic Indicators. Beginning in Chapter 2, the author defines the phrases and concepts essential to an understanding of the indicators.
In Chapter 3 he jumps into the heart of the matter: U. S. economic indicators. Each indicator is evaluated using the following criteria:
*Why is it important?
*How is it computed?
*What does it day about the future?
*How might stocks, bonds and/or currencies react to its announcement?
In Chapter 4, he examines the 10 most influential foreign indicators using the same criteria.
In the final two chapters, Baumohl provides a list of web sites that compile economic data. What in the past costs thousands of dollars is available on the web at no cost.
If any facet of your life is effected by these indicators, you owe it to yourself to keep a copy of this book nearby.

"This is the real deal. Baumohl miraculously breathes life into economic indicators and statistics."–The Wall Street Journal"This is the most up-to-date guide to economic indicators and their importance to financial markets in print. The coverage of less-reported indicators, especially those from nongovernment sources, is hard to find elsewhere. The inclusion of the actual published tables helps the newer student of the markets find the data in the public release. For anyone trying to follow the economic data, this should be next to your computer so that you can understand and find the data on the Internet."–David Wyss, Chief Economist, Standard and Poor's"I find Baumohl's writing fascinating. In addition to the famous indicators, he includes many that I hadn't heard of. I really appreciate that he tells you exactly where to find each indicator on the Web. Just about anyone who's serious about understanding which way the economy is headed will want to read this book. It could be a classic."–Harry Domash, Columnist for MSN Money and Publisher, Winning Investing Newsletter"Bernie Baumohl has accomplished something of real value in The Secrets of Economic Indicators. He has successfully demystified the world of financial and economic news that bombards us in our daily lives. Both professional investors and casual observers of the world of finance and economics will be grateful for what he has done. The constant stream of heretofore bewildering news from the world of business and finance can now be easily understood. Every businessperson or investor should keep a copy of Baumohl's book close at hand as he or she catches up on the business, stock market, and economic events of the day. It is great, at long last, to have someone who has eliminated what may have been so perplexing to so many and to have done so with such remarkable clarity."–Hugh Johnson, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Johnson Illington Advisors"Bernie Baumohl has written a must-read educational and reference book that every individual investor will find indispensable for watching, monitoring, and interpreting the markets. The daily flow of high frequency economic indicators is the stuff that makes financial markets move and that can signal the big trends that make or break investor portfolios. Most important, Bernie's long experience in reporting economics for Time Magazine helps make the 'dismal science' lively and interesting."–Allen Sinai, President and Chief Global Economist, Decision Economics, Inc."Baumohl has a gift for taking a complicated subject and allowing it to read like a fast-moving novel. My confidence in reading and understanding economic indicators as portrayed in this book made me realize the possibilities this information holds for improving my personal net worth as well as navigating my business toward higher profits. I recommend this book if you care about your future finances."–Morris E. Lasky, CEO, Lodging Unlimited, Inc.; Manager and consultant for $6 billion in hotel assets; Chairman, Lodging Conference; Chairman, International Hotel Conference"I think this is an excellent book. It's well written, accessible to a variety of readers, deals with an interesting and important subject, and covers the topic well. It deserves to get a lot of notice and use."–D. Quinn Mills, Alfred J. Weatherhead, Jr., Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School"Economic statistics, employment data, Federal Reserve surveys. Think they are boring? Think again! They can drive markets into a frenzy, causing billions of dollars to be made or lost in an instant. Bernie Baumohl brilliantly, clearly, and, yes, entertainingly describes what every investor and business manager should know about economic indicators: which ones move markets, how to interpret them, and how to use them to spot and capitalize on future economic trends. The Secrets of Economic Indicators is an extraordinary and insightful work–an enormously important contribution to the body of financial literature. Read it and then keep it on your desk. Consult it the next time you are deluged with a flurry of economic statistics. Your understanding certainly will be enhanced, and your portfolio will likely be as well."–Robert Hormats, Vice Chairman, Goldman Sachs (International)"If you want to make money investing, this is an essential trend-tracking tool that will help get you to the bank. This book is the real deal. Bernard Baumohl miraculously breathes life into deadly economic indicators and boring statistics . . . he knows what he's talking about, and his expertise proves it."–Gerald Celente, Director, The Trends Research InstituteCOMPLETELY UPDATED! Appears selling calls may have been to slow for the author. He's figured out that he can make more money and faster by selling books and software subscriptions. And, even more money selling the same book to you twice. "Cash for Life" is a ripoff of his previous work "Covered Calls and Naked Puts". With the exception of his "Visions" methodology, it is literally word for word. Is it ethical to plagiarize your own work? It's like a student turning in the same work to two different teachers. While he may have updated his options trading examples and added a new methodology, this "new book" (to use the term loosely) should have been released as an updated edition to the earlier book. At the least, it should have been disclosed in the book's promotion and on his website. Could he have possibly given a discount to a buyer that had also purchased "Covered Calls and Naked Puts"?
His earlier book, "Covered Calls and Naked Puts", was a fair primer in selling covered calls. So, why didn't the author take this opportunity to introduce his "Visions" in a more advanced book with a new storyline. It would have been nice to see deeper discussions his investment reasonings rather than just rely upon his mathematical models. Here are some ideas. A chapter on "alternatives to letting yourself get assigned" (ie. covering the call; rolling forward, upward or downward; or buying it back when it premium is well below its initial sale and there is still significant time left til expiration) would be worthwhile even if this isn't the author's trading style. Also, a chapter on the "tax implications of options" should be included since there are some pretty obscure tax rules out there; they have their own variations of what is considered short-term and long-term transactions. And, what about the "wash-sale rule"? Is this something the options investor/trader needs to consider? I'll let you field that one Ronald.

This is a great book. It will turn many of the conventional nuggets of wisdom about stock market on their head. It is a fairly complete book. For an individual trader it explains the investing process well. The 100 or so charts at the beginning of the book are very valuable and informative. CANSLIM is the right system to follow in my experience as well. Probably the most important piece of advice in the book is the advice to cut your losses short at 7-8% from your purchase price of a stock. Most recently 3 follow through days in the market have failed. This book however says that follow through days which mark the beginning of an uptrend in a stock market are reliable about 80% of the time. No book, no investing philosophy can be perfect, that's why one needs to cut the losses short so that one can live to fight another day.
This book with green cover is only slightly different from the one with orange cover. The differences are-
1) there is a quiz at the end to test your knowledge of CANSLIM
2) there are more recent charts of stocks which were hits and picked around March 2009 as part of William O'Neil's institutional service. These are stocks like Priceline, CERN, NFLX etc.
3) there is a CD attached to the back cover about a trial of one of their services.
All in all i don't think there is a need to get the latest book if you already have the book with orange cover.

I generally read fiction and, although, until recently, I worked in an area of law that dealt with finance, I am not a financial expert. But like most of my fellow Americans, I was interested in learning what an expert would say about the causes of the recent worldwide financial crisis. This book lays it out, methodically and logically but in an interesting, accessible style. It starts with the Depression and goes on from there. It discusses the governmental policies that encouraged the making of loans to borrowers of questionable creditworthiness. It dissects the financial models that were used. Most interestingly, it explains how, at each step, these financial models gave the lenders, and those associated with them, a personal motivation for making unsound loans. The conclusion is chilling.

In 2006 residential real estate prices peaked and started to fall, then threatened the world's financial institutions in 2007, and confronted the global economy with disaster in 2008.In the past few years, millions of people have lost very substantial portions of their wealth. And while the markets have rebounded considerably, they are still far from a full recovery. Now, professional economists, policy experts, public intellectuals, and the public at large are all struggling to understand the crisis that has engulfed us.In The Financial Crisis of Our Time, Robert W. Kolb provides an essential, comprehensive review of the context within which these events unfolded, arguing that while the crisis had no single cause, housing finance played a central role, and that to understand what happened, one must comprehend the mechanism by which the housing industry came into crisis. Kolb offers a history of the housing finance system as it developed throughout the twentieth century, and especially in the period from 1990 to 2006, showing how the originate-to-distribute model of mortgage financing presented market participants with a "clockwork of perverse incentives." In this system, various participants-simply by pursuing their narrow personal interests-participated in an elaborate mechanism that led to disaster. The book then gives a narrative of the crisis as it developed and analyzes all of the participants in the housing market, from the home buyers to investors in collaterialized debt obligations (CDOs). At each step, the book explains in a nontechnical manner the essential relationships among the market participants and zeroes in on the incentives facing each party. The book also includes an extensive glossary and a detailed, authoritative timeline of the subprime financial crisis.Offering a unique look at the participants and incentives within the housing finance industry and its role in the biggest financial catastrophe in recent history, Robert W. Kolb provides one of the most comprehensive and illuminating accounts of the events that will be studied for decades to come as the financial crisis of our time.

The first half was an excellent analysis of the mess we are in and how it will only get worse. Second 1/2 advice was fair, but not why to buy the book. Should have had more evaluation of what happens as a consequence of this problem, rather than his case studies. Worth the first 1/2 but a bit disappointing after that. Read it, then HS Dent's "The Great Depression Ahead" and you will have a real game plan.

A clear look at how to capture investment profits during difficult financial times

The U.S. economy has become crippled by the credit and real estate catastrophe. Even though we've all been affected by the calamity and have heard no shortage of news about it, it still seems unfathomable and utterly incomprehensible to most people that the actions of certain mortgage brokers, bankers, ratings agencies, and investment banks could break the economic engine of the world.
Now, for the first time, and in terms everyone can grasp, noted analysts and value investing experts Whitney Tilson and Glenn Tongue explain not only how it happened, but shows that the tsunami of credit problems isn't over. The second wave has yet to come. But if you know catastrophe is looming, you can sidestep the train wreck-and even profit. You just need to understand how bad times present opportunity and where to look. More Mortgage Meltdown can help you achieve this goal. The book
Breaks down the complex mortgage products and rocket-science securities Wall Street created
Addresses how to find investment opportunities within the rubble and position your portfolio to take advantage of the crisis
Explains exactly how the combination of aggressive lending, government missteps, and Wall Street trading practices created the perfect economic storm
Shows you why the crisis is not yet over and what we can expect going forward

More Mortgage Meltdown can help you understand the events that have unfolded, and put you in a better position to profit from the opportunities that arise during these tough financial times.

Trend Following: How Great Traders Make Millions in Up or Down Markets (Financial Times Prentice Hall Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What's great about this book is that it goes straight for jugular of anyone who can't stop themselves from making predictions about the markets. Like those chart reading traders who think they can actually forecast the market direction. Prediction with charts is a losing game. If 100 traders stare at a chart, they come up with 100 different subjective interpretations. This book may actually make them realize that pretending they have unique skill through years of ink blot study is just blowing smoke.
Better yet this book is not based off hypothetical testing or experiments in what may work. It uses real performance data from guys who have traded for decades as trend followers. If you worship technical indicators as "it" don't read this book unless you want a hard cold splash of reality. If you worship technical indicators as some market tonic -- go ahead -- but don't forget the best in the business do nothing of the sort.
One of my favorite parts is the description of the hundreds of millions of dollars trend followers won at the same time Long Term Capital Management was imploding and losing their shirts. Wow, what an example of risk and volatility in stark terms.
But ultimately it is the no holds barred condemnation of fundamental analysis that sticks with me. Trend followers don't waste their time trying to understand forces influencing market participants (fundamental analysis) They care about the market price and what they should do in response to market price movement. Isn't that a goal for all of us? Round of applause for the diligent research and clear writing.

How did trader, John W. Henry, start out as a farmer and end up a billionaire and owner of, first the Florida Marlins and now, the Boston Red Sox? How do traders like Bill Dunn, Ed Seykota and Keith Campbell continually pull profits in the hundreds of millions from both bull and bear markets? The answer is that they are trend followers. Trend following is the only strategy to consistently make money in the markets. Leading expert Michael Covel reveals the underground network of these little-known traders and hedge fund managers who have practiced trend following for years. He pulls back the veil on their strategies by introducing the basic concepts/techniques of trend following such as why the market price contains all the information a trader needs. Covel rigorously reviews and analyzes years of detailed performance data to prove without question that trend following works. He breaks down trend following strategies including how to make volatility work; how to control risk; and how to make successful trading decisions "from the gut."Covel shows why trend following is ideal for individual traders who self-manage their portfolios or for the individual investor searching for a new type of investment advisor.Along the way he debunks an immense amount of misinformation/failed advice from pros who ought to know better. This timely book capitalizes on today's massive move back into the markets and investors' renewed determination to find strategies that really work.

Manias, Panics, and Crashes: A History of Financial Crises (Wiley Investment Classics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
History always has lessons to teach us. In addition to comments by Golden Lion from Utah, I believed this book really spoke poignantly about the "adjustment process" of global or local market imbalances and the possible causes.
The causes are elaborated in many different examples from the Dutch Tulip crash to the dot-com crash. Signs of the excess liquidity, overly generous expectations of future demand, and other general characteristics are drawn from these events.
In the economic case where A has caused B, then B has caused C, and so on. If Z is a market crash, one cannot blame Y for losses. The book writes that its the cumulative effects of A-Y that has caused this, and more likely the pin-prick that pops a "bubble" is normally from a totally unexcepted source. To me, this was the greatest take away point -- naturally after every market crash we attempt to learn from our follies. However, the market has also learned and adapted, such that the next market failure is caused by a different set, but the same symptoms are similar to A-Y.
On the negative side, I wished that the latest version did a little better job at editing down the redundancies. For example, the Japanese real estate collapse in the early 1990's was used 5-7 times in different parts of the book -- in many cases, the underlying story was retold, even verbatim. I would disagree with one of the reviewers, that one needs an advanced degree to understand this book, however, an appreciation for economic theory is helpful, particularly monetary policies and capital markets. It does not require up-to-date knowledge of the stock, currencies, or bond markets.
Nevertheless, a good book to keep and re-read every few years. Always worth remembering our past mistakes and trying to create an edge.

The Financial Times Guide to Options: The Plain and Simple Guide to Successful Strategies (2nd Edition) (Financial Times Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hello Everyone,
The Financial Times Guide to Options is a major overhaul of Options Plain and Simple: OPS, as most traders know, was considered to be the bible of the industry.
In FTGO I include new products and new trading ideas. All the fractions have been converted to decimals, making it much easier to get through.
But most important, I've added market scenarios: How I or my clients made or lost money: real and often big money. You will learn from our successes, and you will learn from our mistakes. You will profit from our experience.
Make money and manage risk: these were the fundamental concepts of OPS, and now they're applied to FTGO.
Lastly, this book is a user's guide, just like OPS. It's not rocket science. It is practical advice from a veteran.
The best just got better.

I first balked at the high price of this book. It didn't matter that it was written by professional futures trader, George Angell. I bought it and studied the different spread trades that he dedicates a chapter each to. This book will be useful for years to come from taking these trades. How to Trade in Stocks : The Livermore Formula for Combining Time Element and Price (Revised Ed)

Jesse Livermore's book, in my opinion, is the single all time best book ever written on trading stocks.
I have read many books on trading, 7 out of 10 ordinary books are written by people who are good at writing textbooks. They are good at talking theory, but when it comes to combat in the trading battlefield, they come short and leaves you unsatisfied.
Jesse walks you through important trading principles which he learned through mistakes himself. He walks you through the emotions, the struggles, the mistakes, together with the success. This is no textbook, but you will learn important principles from a man who has been through the trenches himself.
THis book is not for ordinary investors, but for traders with a bit of experience. For those who are full time traders, this book is a must read. It leaves the ordinary trading textbooks in the dust.
The only draw back is Richard Smitten bought the copyright to the original book (from what I know), and he removed 3 chapters at the end of the original book, and he replaced it with his own materials. I went through great troubles to get hold of the orignal book with the final 3 chapters intact(the juicy stuff).
Overall, a must read for traders. If you can find the original edition, buy it and forget the new edition by Smitten.

Beating the Market, 3 Months at a Time: A Proven Investing Plan Everyone Can Use Review

Beating the Market, 3 Months at a Time: A Proven Investing Plan Everyone Can Use
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book suffers from two problems. First, it seems like a slimmed-down version of author Gerald Appel's "Opportunity Investing," which also discussed the use of a momentum-rotation strategy to improve absolute returns and reduce portfolio drawdown. The big difference here is that the Appels emphasize the use of ETFs for implementing their strategy.
Second, there is a lot of basic material whose purpose is to persuade the reader that they need to invest in equity markets. You see this too often in books on investing, where the authors assume that the reader need first be persuaded to invest and then to invest according to the author's strategy. I would wager that most people who pick up books on investing need no such convincing: it's preaching to the choir.
That said, the momentum-rotation strategy is an interesting concept, elegant and, in its ETF incarnation, easy to use. It is worth bearing in mind, though, that trading in and out of ETFs as might be necessary under this strategy would incur a significant tax and cost liability that the strategy would have to hurdle if it was to outperform as simple buy-and-hold plan. Alas, transaction costs and taxes do not factor into the Appels' analysis.

The Right Stock at the Right Time: Prospering in the Coming Good Years Review

The Right Stock at the Right Time: Prospering in the Coming Good Years
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Larry Williams is a prolific author, trader, educator, and money manager. With over a quarter century of experience, Williams has provided investors with practical and easy-to-implement market timing and stock selection strategies in this just published book.
Williams initially focuses on the recurrent seasonal patterns in the market. Williams reveals one interesting strategy where he notes that excellent times to go long the market are years ending in twos (e.g., 1952, 1962 ...... 1992) and threes. Just look at charts in those years or view them in this book to see those excellent buying points.
Williams also covers the best years of each decade to invest - fifth, eighth and ninth years. The consistency of these three years performance is 80%(positive returns in 8 out of 10 of those decade years). Next he covers the four-year cycle from 1858 to the present time (last 4-yr cycle years were 1994, 1998, 2002) showing that they were good times to buy at their yearly lows, many times occurring in the September/October timeframe.
Another strategy Williams covers in buying in October and selling in April. This strategy was offered by Stock Trader's Almanac in 1986 developed by Yale Hirsch, and it still works today. This strategy has produced significant returns while reducing risk as investors are out of the market for half the year.
Williams provides a look at indicators to determine that a market bottom is in place. He covers such items as the Fed's Stock Evaluation Model, margin credit, odd-lot short sales, Investors Intelligence Bull/Bear Index, US Bonds, and gold prices.
Williams covers in detail the fallacy of long-term investing and the devastation that it can wreak on investors portfolios. Investors who are die-hard "buy-and-holders" should read this chapter to learn that to use that strategy is dangerous.
To do well in the market, Williams urges investors to find stocks that have the capability to outperform the market, and then find the best time to buy them. He totally disagrees with the Wall Street cognoscenti that market-timing is useless.
He spends a chapter on buying stocks at a discount, and one on measuring investor sentiment on individual stocks. He lists seven traditional measures of value (e.g., P/E ratio, Price/Book) and elucidates on which ones work best.
All-in-all this well-written, easy to understand book provides investors with a systematic, time-tested approach to investing. Williams has again provided investors with another classic.

Cash in a Flash: Real Money in No Time Review

Cash in a Flash: Real Money in No Time

Cash in a Flash combines mind training with financial planning. The result is an interesting audiobook that helps you overcome mental obstacles to achieving financial success. The first part of the book helps listeners identify negative, mental "voices". Through clever exercises that work well in the audio format, listeners practice manipulating their mental voice . I believe the audiobook version is actually better than print for many of these exercises. Author and narrator Mark Hansen (of Chicken Soup for the Soul fame) is an experienced cheerleader and guide. His enthusiasm will encourage people most in need of mind conditioning. His vocal performance is both animated and supportive, a perfect match for his role as coach.
I was impressed that this book first addresses mental obstacles to financial success. I believe those new to mind training will find the book's approach welcoming and easy to understand and access. The authors then tackle how to accumulate wealth using their knowledge and experience. This is a complete audiobook package for anyone looking to improve their financial situation. Anyone can follow this approach with success.

Value in Time: Better Trading through Effective Volume (Wiley Trading) Review

Value in Time: Better Trading through Effective Volume (Wiley Trading)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author uses inexpensive off-the-shelf software to slice each trading day of a stock into one-minute segments. He finds the average one-minute volume for the day and separates the minutes into those with above or below average volume. In each group, he adds up the volume of minutes with rising prices and subtracts the volume of minutes with falling prices. This gives him two cumulative volume lines: one for the minutes with above average and the other for below average volume. He named them Large and Small Effective Volume.
The minutes with above average volume reflect the impact of the big money and often have predictive value. When you find a condition in which the big money starts pushing up a stock, while the small money remains negative or neutral, an upside reversal is in the cards. When the big money starts pushing the stock down while the small money is flat or buying, a downside reversal is more likely.
The author introduces another key concept which he calls Active Boundaries. When the returns from a stock over a period of time reach their upper boundary, the expectations for a further rise diminish and a downside reversal is more likely. When a stock declines and hits its lower Active Boundary, bullish expectations become high and the stock has a greater probability of an upside reversal. Numerous charts show how to catch reversals using these concepts.
In addition to Effective Volume and Active Boundaries the author describes several other concepts. He has a very rare ability to stand apart of the crowd, to question accepted concepts, and to come up with new ideas.
In the interest of full disclosure: I met Pascal a couple of years ago while working on my book Entries & Exits (John Wiley & Sons, 2005), which includes a chapter on his approach.
During the past year I have been receiving Pascal's analytic emails in which he shares his research into current markets. After you read this book, I suggest you write to Pascal and ask to be added to his mailing list!
I expect the concepts of Effective Volume, Active Boundaries, and others in this book to become accepted by many serious traders. As always, the early adopters will reap the greatest rewards.
