Must-win Battles: Creating the Focus You Need to Achieve Your Key Business Goals (Financial Times) Review

Must-win Battles: Creating the Focus You Need to Achieve Your Key Business Goals (Financial Times)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MWB stands for "Must Win Battles," which is the title and a common acronym throughout this this book. Authors Peter Killing, Thomas Malnight and Tracey Keys use "battle" to refer to competitors and "must-win" to mean these battles must be won. There are a lot of circumstances applicable to the concept of 'battle.' Examples and case studies cover management style, team work, planning, shortlisting, and executing, are noted. One example is Unilever in Africa, Nestle China, and a two-year case study of the CFF business groups from the words of an executive.
Three sections and nine chapters.
Section I: Preparing the Journey
Section II: Engaging the Team
Section III: Making it Happen
The different types of managers listed are the commander, diplomat, thinker, and motivator, who are defined and described. This is followed by the role of Emotional Intelligence in the workplace. EI is just as, and oft-times more vital than IQ. There are questions regarding this that the reader can answer for themselves so they can apply this concept to their own situations in life and in the work place. This book helps the manager and employees as individuals and allows them to reflect on others and themselves.
Different dynamics of MWB, which often may include change. While strategically planning and implementing Must-Win Battles there are Resisters, Bystanders, and Supporters. A time-line is almost always necessary and matrices and diagrams are presented, when planning and executing.
A good reality check is in chapter 4, which lists "Typical Company-Related Myths." Those who've worked in medium or large organizations can identity with the company values and slogans. But they're usually only slogans, because they aren't practiced. :)
At the end of the book there are:
A) The MWB Journey and Road map
B) The Denison Survey: Questions
C) Using the External Assistance
This is helpful for all people who manage and work in organizations of all types and sizes.

Doing Both: Capturing Today's Profit and Driving Tomorrow's Growth Review

Doing Both: Capturing Today's Profit and Driving Tomorrow's Growth

If this book was a reality TV show, it would be a flattering portrait of a celebrity's life. Initially an intriguing glimpse into the inner world of someone of interest, then realization dawning that, in the end, you're only seeing what the celebrity wants you to see.
The opening chapters are a useful reminder that business folk often get trapped in false choices such as on-time or high-quality, for example. But that's about the extent of the concept, and the remainder of the book is a collection of anecdotes about Cisco senior executives. The writing is strangely mechanical and almost devoid of style and wit, which makes it hard to keep going. I found myself rapidly losing interest in the middle.
The Cisco examples are like a celebrity magazine cover: photoshopped for maximum effect. I worked at Cisco for five years, joining about the same time as Inder Sidhu in the 1990s. It was truly an exceptional place to work, and my experiences there left a lasting positive impression. I was part of some of the product stories he recounts, and this is where my recollection departs from Inder's. He's not trying to be deceptive, merely carefully selective to support his thesis. I did get a little suspicious of the frequent occurrence of the figure "40%". In so many of the vignettes, this is the stated bookings growth achieved as a result of "doing both".
Summaries of the thought processes for some of the major decisions are thought provoking -- made me think about how I could use the same ideas in my business. The most difficult part of corporate decision-making is bringing the rest of the organization along on the journey, though, and there's precious little on how that was achieved.
In short, an interesting glimpse into the inner life of Cisco, a good-but-not-great business book. Another reviewer describes it as a modern The Innovator's Dilemma: The Revolutionary Book that Will Change the Way You Do Business (Collins Business Essentials) -- I can't agree with that. It's too anecdotal, without the rigor and depth of Christiansen's work.

The first 30 pages alone would have been enough to rank 10 stars! Just by reading this book I became optimistic about my practice and it began to fill. Each chapter gave me ideas I never thought of before. It helped me work smarter - with less effort, much more pleasure. By the time I finished this book I was trying to decide whether to raise my rates or start a waiting list, and I was seeing IDEAL clients, taking no HMO's, charging more than other psychiatrists in my area, and looking forward to going to work each day. This book blends business with integrity and taught me to value myself, my practice and my clients. I recommend it to ANYONE in the health care field. It made it so easy, and helped me to confront business aspects I hadn't been paying attention to. And she gives so may real life examples, it feels do-able. This book is worth a years' worth of high quality business consulting. I recommend it to any of my clients who have private practices from yoga instruction to massage therapists, and to all my friends in the psychotherapy field. I have never made so much money or felt so good about my practice in my life. She even makes talking to clients about money something I can now do in a way that feels both appropriate and respectful - to me and to them. What I have learned has already netted me literally thousands of dollars. I have never written a book review before, but I have to express my gratitude in some way, and this is my attempt to let others know that with the suggestions, tips and encouragement from this book, it is not only possible to make a living doing therapy, but to build an IDEAL practice without having to contract with any insurance companies. What a God-send of a book.

When you look at the goals of this book they are things like develop a methodology that works, using common tools like PERT, CPM, setting up communications within the team; in essence the real things that make a project successful. This also means that you learn enough that if you want to take the PMP test, you have the background and understanding to pass it.
This is the fourth edition of a book initially published in 1991. As the author says, it is written for the practitioner rather than the classroom. There are a number of books on passing the PMP exam. Most of them teach to the questions on the test without going into what you are really trying to do as a project manager. This book is different. It covers what it really takes to manage a project, and it does so with words that are easy to understand with photographs that are meaningful to the text.
This is the best book I know of to use when you really want to understand what project management is all about.

Ready, Fire, Aim: Zero to $100 Million in No Time Flat (Agora Series) Review

Ready, Fire, Aim: Zero to $100 Million in No Time Flat (Agora Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I enjoy the occasional book on marketing and how to acheive success. The cover blurbs for "Ready, Aim, Fire" seemed promising as did some of the Amazon reviews. So I figured why not.
I can now answer the question "why not" in detail and at length.
First, the good news. Michael Masterson does a reasonably good job of distilling the advice offered in dozens of other books on advertising and marketing, from Napoleon Hill to Rosse Reeve's "Reality In Advertising". However, the solid advice gleaned from those classics is diluted with Masterson's endless preening and outright bragging.
The overall experience is not necessarily enjoyable or instructive, unless you are inspired by someone telling you, over and over and over again, of how successful and great he is.
A careful reading led me to become very suspicious of Michael Masterson and to do some quick research. Masterson claims to have had titles on the New York Times, Wall St. Journal and Amazon best seller lists. Indeed, on two occasions - and that means two distinct dates - Masterson was on the Wall St. Journal best seller list. This is not like being on that list week after week: it was twice for one time each. As for the New York Times, a Nexis search shows Michael Masterson appearing in the Times just once, with a comment in an article. No appearances on their best seller list. Amazon's best seller lists are very different and appearing on them is on meaningless. It is said that having 30 friends order a book at the same time will put you on their best sellers list for a little while at least.
More disturbing are Masterson's associations, one of which is Agora International, which publishes a number of investment newsletters which seem to be of the "we have a tip for you" variety. Agora was sued for fraud by the SEC at one point. This does not reflect directly on Masterson since he claims a nebulous role of "consultant" with them. It does, however, reflect on the company he keeps.
The company he keeps also includes AWAI, American Artists & Writers, Inc. Masterson doesn't say that he authored a product for them, a course on copywriting. Both AWAI and Masterson are the subject of literally hundreds of online complaints.
As I said, much of this book is borrowed and adapted. I don't have a problem with that since solid knowledge is intended to be passed on, as long as it is not plagarized in violation of copyright laws. But even here, Masterson leaves himself open to question. He attributes the concept of the "unique selling proposition" to a 1980 book called "Positioning". In fact, Rosser Reeves first put forth the expression and the concept in his 1961 "Reality In Advertising".
Would I recommend that someone read this book? Sort of. It is an adequate distillation of marketing advice from many reputable sources. To his credit, Masterson doesn't claim to be the original thinking here. On the other hand, Masterson's personal credibility is questionable and you really have to take what he says of his own success with a very large grain of salt. Personally I think there are better books in this area to be found.
Jerry

The Basic Guide to Pricing Your Craftwork: With Profitable Strategies for Recordkeeping, Cutting Material Costs, Time & Workplace Management, Plus Tax Review

The Basic Guide to Pricing Your Craftwork: With Profitable Strategies for Recordkeeping, Cutting Material Costs, Time and Workplace Management, Plus Tax
Average Reviews:

Mr. Dillehay's advice is aimed squarely at handcrafters, which means he's able to recommend courses of action that might be contrary to more general advice. For example, while it's common in many stores to price just under a dollar amount ($.99 or $.95 amounts), you don't want to do that with most handcrafted items. That sort of price can actually leave people thinking your goods are cheap and low-quality. Similarly, talking up the uniqueness of your methods or materials and raising your prices might increase your sales, even though common wisdom says that if sales are slow you should lower your prices.
Many beginning crafters are reluctant to put a decent price on their goods. They feel that they or their products aren't good enough, or that people won't be willing to pay that kind of price. They look at the price tag on the materials they used and think they shouldn't mark things up much beyond that. The problem is, there are many costs associated with crafting work that aren't taken into account by that, and you could find yourself losing money without even realizing it. Dillehay makes certain that you know how to take all of those invisible expenses into account when pricing your goods.
He goes on to talk about pricing for different markets. You might be able to price higher at a craft fair than through a store, for example. He even discusses wholesale pricing that allows you to sell to stores, catalogs, and other outlets while still making a profit. In fact, pretty much the only subject that seems conspicuously absent is any talk of selling online whatsoever.
Because so many factors affect the price of your goods, this book ends up doubling as a mini-guide on running a craft business (although you'll still want to delve more thoroughly into that as its own topic). It includes a variety of forms for inventories and so on.
Despite the absence of information regarding online pricing, methods and sales---which these days seems like a bit of a large oversight---there's so much valuable information in here that I highly recommend it to any crafter who'd like to make a profit on her wares.

The book has 12 chapters. I found them easy to read, and their titles clearly explain what is covered in the book. I recommend you examine the Search Inside feature Amazon provides for this book so you can get a better picture of what is actually included in the book by examining the Table of Contents.
Time is always being spent. You can spend it wisely. You can be frugal with it. Or you can simply waste it by throwing it away. The bottom line is that time is valuable and you should try to maximize the benefits you can get from it.
The author in this book seems to group the use of time as being either productive or unproductive. I got the feeling that he thinks that time used unproductively is wasted and that treating it as such should be avoided. And he has written this book to help people who have 5 hours a week of unproductive time to capture it and make it productive. However, what is so magical about 5 hours? I would have liked the book better if the author had just told us he was trying to help the reader convert unproductive time into productive time assuming the reader needs to be more productive.
About a month ago I was informed that my oldest nephew was not a particularly good manager of his time. He was a sophmore in high school and was forgetting to do homework that had to be handed in. He also was missing deadlines on a few other things, too. This was not because he was lazy; it was because he was incredibly busy and had too much on his plate so to speak. I did a search on Amazon to find a good book on time management, schedule planning, deadlines, and appointments. As an attorney a long time ago I had learned how to keep and maintain a schedule planner (calendar system) and tickler file to stay on top of my appointments and deadlines. I know how the system should work, but I was not able to find a good book regarding the subject on Amazon that I could buy and give to my nephew. However, I was able to find a few articles pursuant to a Google search.
When I picked up the instant book I was hoping it would be the book I had looked for a month ago. While I found the instant book to be really good at touching on the ins, outs, and how-to's with regard to time management, I found it lacking in specific guidance as to how to keep and maintain a Personal Information Management system (PIM). And since in my humble opinion the adoption of a PIM system (whether in paper format, digital format offline, or digital format online) is critical to good time management, I found this book to not be worthy of a 5-star rating. It would have gotten 5 stars if it had felt a little more like a book instead of a mere outline of material AND gone into some depth discussing PIM systems. All in all, I found the book to be just a little too generic on the topic of time management. Most of what was included herein was simply common sense. 4 stars!

The book was not well written, the narrators came across too stuffy. There is good material here, but I am having a hard time forcing myself past the middle of the book.
I enjoyed the AMA Handbook of Project Management much better.

Mapping Your Recovery is meant to be a guide for those business owners that have been beaten down by the poor economy and looking for help in growing their business. It is a compilation of articles I have written during the first few years of the recession (2008, 2009 and 2010) that focus on improving the value of a business regardless of what the economy is doing. There are a number of strategies that can be used to move your organization forward in difficult times, and the articles in this book will help you put them in perspective and put them to use. Share this book with your management team and use it as a way of stimulating discussion during meetings to start planning your improvement. Once you have developed a plan to move forward you need to do the most important thing... EXECUTE. Most businesses do a fine job of planning, but a poor job of implementation. The best plan in world does you no good sitting on a shelf! The information in this book is based on my experience in running four different businesses ranging in size from a start-up to a 1,600 person organizations, as well as working with a number of small and medium sized business owners in my consulting practice.

The Wall Street Journal Essential Guide to Management: Lasting Lessons from the Best Leadership Minds of Our Time Review

The Wall Street Journal Essential Guide to Management: Lasting Lessons from the Best Leadership Minds of Our Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Despite the 3-star rating, I recommend the book for those new to management and those who wish to read a cogent primer on Western management concepts: the book is well written, easy to understand, and provides a decent overview of management/leadership ideas. Those who have given the book 4- and 5-star ratings have highlighted the strengths of the book.
I found it to be just an average intro because
a) Mr. Murray can't seem to make up his mind whether this is a book for any "knowledge worker," mid-level managers, or CEOs. Various chapters appear to be targeted at different audiences.
b) The book appears to be a paean to the Wall Street Journal. Many of the stories and anecdotes shared by the author are based on WSJ articles. The author could have found better examples and stories in a myriad of other journals, magazines, and newspapers to make his points (e.g, Fast Company is an excellent resource for great management/leadership ideas).
c) Despite the chapter on Globalization, the book is entirely focused on Western management thinking. It would have been strengthened by adding management ideas from any of the rising economic powers. (e.g., Nilekani's Imagining India)
d) Mr. Murray largely omits the impact of technology and social media on management.
e) And finally, the book focuses on a rather narrow list of management classics. Mr. Murray had a difficult task of distilling 50 years of management thinking into a couple of hundred pages, but the book would have been better if he had mentioned or suggested reading a broader array of management classics (e.g., any book by Peter Block).
So if you need a primer on management or a quick review of standard topics, this is not a bad book. If you are looking to take your management skills to a new level, best to look elsewhere.

The 2,000 Percent Squared Solution: The Fast and Effective Road Less Traveled for Creating 400 Times Greater Profits and Effectiveness Review

The 2,000 Percent Squared Solution: The Fast and Effective Road Less Traveled for Creating 400 Times Greater Profits and Effectiveness
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I am among those who have read and admire Donald Mitchell's previously published The 2,000 Percent Solution: Free Your Organization from "Stalled" Thinking to Achieve Exponential Success that he co-authored with Carol Coles and Robert Metz. Its subtitle correctly suggests why the authors wrote it: To "free" organizations from "stalled" thinking so that they can achieve exponential success. Note the words enclosed by quotation marks. Most organizations (especially the larger ones) can easily become captive to basic assumptions and presumptions which are no longer valid...or at least appropriate. As a result, those involved feel obligated to defend the status quo. Their thinking is stalled. Managers become bureaucrats. Because they are defending the status quo, they resist and resent any suggested changes of it. Of course, as a result, change does occur: The organization deteriorates. The "best and the brightest" employees leave as do under-served customers. How to solve such problems? Effectively apply the "2,000 percent solution" process that the co-authors explain with rigor and eloquence.
I am delighted that Mitchell and Coles have co-authored The 2,000 Percent Squared Solution in which they examine "the fast and effective road less traveled for creating 400 times greater profits and effectiveness." Of course, the ultimate results achieved will vary from one organization to another and depend on several factors that include strong leadership at all levels and within all areas of operations; provision of sufficient resources; effective communication, cooperation, and especially collaboration among everyone involved; accurate and consistent measurement of process improvement initiatives; and perhaps most important of all, a shared and sustained commitment to achieving to achieving the desired objectives, whatever they may be.
Mitchell and Coles carefully organize their material as follows. First, they explain what a "2,000 percent solution": any method of operating that enables an organization to do what it does with only 0-4% of the time and resources it now expends, or accomplish an increase of 20 times in results while expending the same or less resources They then explain why such solutions are available for almost any business activity if decision makers (a) select the highest payoff opportunities first and then (b) develop the skills needed throughout the given organization to design and implement the 2,000 percent solutions.
Then in the Introduction, they observe that when there are initiatives to make large improvements with the 2,000 percent solution process, there is a tendency to "take a more-traveled road" by applying that process to only one improvement at a time. Invoking a metaphor from one of Robert Frost's poems, Mitchell and Cole observe that relatively few "take the poetic road `less traveled by' to seek first expanding usage 21 times...but that road `makes all the difference.'" Why? Because (mixing metaphors) picking what is often referred to as "low hanging fruit" is far easier and less perilous than attempting expanding usage.
Successful simultaneous application of 2,000 percent solution process to both usage and delivery effectiveness, two complementary solution processes, can to gain 20 times more benefits than from either alone. "That's what we mean by a 2,000 percent squared solution. You can also think of this concept as developing a 40,000 percent solution, or a 400 times increase in benefits."
The balance of the material is presented within two parts:
Part One: Build the High-Speed Road to 21 Times More Availability
Comment: Mitchell and Coles explain how a 2,000 percent solution that can achieve what Jim Collins would characterize as a BHAG (i.e. "big hairy audacious goal") but I presume to add a major caveat: there is no way to exceed, achieve, or even come near such a goal without formulating and then implementing an appropriate strategy to achieve only results that are most important to the given enterprise. Once again, I am reminded of what Peter Drucker observed in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all."
Part Two: Follow the High-Speed Road Inexpensively to Enjoy Increased
Benefits for 96 Percent Less Cost
Comment: Mitchell and Coles focus on how to make large cost reductions that are independent of the expansion size involved while achieving economies of scale and a more appropriate distribution of shared costs. In Part One, they recommend taking the road less traveled, building a new, high-speed highway. In Part Two, they extend the "road" metaphor when explaining how to maximize efficiencies during the journey to achieve optimal solutions (i.e. those with the greatest ROI). They examine a number of applications that have a cost-reduction focus.
For me, some of the most valuable material is provided in Chapter 12, "Write a Great Owner's Manual: Add Do-It-Yourself Features." Long ago, I realized that no two organizations are exactly the same, nor is any one organization the same two days in a row. Mitchell and Coles' point, with which I totally agree, is that it remains for decision-makers to collaborate on determining which "primal solutions" are their organization's highest priority. With all due respect to the methodology that Mitchell and Coles propose, it must be "translated" (if that's the correct word) by those who are responsible for implementing it and then customized to accommodate their organization's specific circumstances.
Worst case; let's say that no 2,000% solutions are achieved. Would 500% percent be acceptable, at least for the time being? Process improvement is a journey, not a destination, and it never ends. Build on the 500% solutions as you continue the journey.
More a quibble than a complaint, the material in this book requires a comprehensive index. The next edition should have one. That said, credit Donald Mitchell and Carol Coles with another brilliant achievement.
The substantial value of this book will be increased even more (if not by 40,000%!) if read in combination with one of more of these: Enterprise Architecture As Strategy co-authored by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson, Richard Ogle's Smart World, Henry Chesbrough's Open Business Models and the more recently published Open Innovation, Vince Thompson's Ignited, and Oren Harari's Break from the Pack.

Connie Podesta has written a great line of books in her career, and this is no exception! I've gotten a lot out of reading most of her books and am really impressed with this one. It's got great How-to info on gaining the trust and respect of women so you can finally close the deal with them.
Now, I've never needed any of these sales guides, but everything in there seems great and makes sense. I'm such a fan of her work that I felt I should read this one too. And I'd say it's actually helped with my overall communication skills. I loved this book. Other great works by her: Life Would Be Easy If It Weren't for Other People (Live) & How to Be the Person Successful Companies Fight to keep
Read her stuff, you won't regret it.
