Virtual Teams: Reaching Across Space, Time, and Organizations with Technology Review

Virtual Teams: Reaching Across Space, Time, and Organizations with Technology

"Virtual Teams" was a real treat for both my academic and consulting sensibilities. I have never seen such a thorough work on this topic. It is both fundamental and visionary at the same time.
In discourse with a fellow business consultant we bantered about the topic of Lipnack and Stamps latest book (of which I had received an advance copy). He said: "Unfortunately, Lipnack and Stamps(L&S) have been 10 years ahead of the curve with their understanding of the importance of networking."
"But," I replied, "With the book 'Virtual Teams' they offer the world-wide-race-to-the-Internet a well needed moment of reflection-during which they offer PURPOSE to connecting and give virtual teaming DEFINITION and DIRECTION." And the banter continued but we both agreed and got tingles as our chat echoed the truth of their statement:
"Communication technologies and computer networks-in particular the Internet-are underwriting this moment of pregnant potential." (p 240)
"You know," I concluded, "It's a good thing they (L&S) were ahead of their time-otherwise we would not have the language to discuss our 'interdependence' symptoms, to test our 'distributed business' hypothesis', and to realize how much responsibilty it is to be 'pregnant' with potential! Really! The capabilities and expectations we have to manage in these Internet days... how exciting, how dangerous! After all, 'net potential, without 'net performance is just predisposed waste, don't you agree?"
"Yeah, yeah Paula,--yadda, yadda, yadda; 'net, 'net, 'net...enough philosophy-so, should I read the book or not?"
"Go for it." I replied. "This book is not just an electronic blip about the latest fad of virtual teams- it is a study on careful communication, on planning and developing valuable distributed business relationships...a book to be savored and re-read over time."
(BTW --Mine is already all dog-eared and worn!)
Be prepared to THINK DEEP; when you read this book, SIP it SLOWLY and --ENJOY!

The Lords of Strategy: The Secret Intellectual History of the New Corporate World Review

The Lords of Strategy: The Secret Intellectual History of the New Corporate World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The debate over the value of high-level strategic consultants and academics has waged for decades. I was one such consultant for the better part of ten years who often spent the first part of any conversation defending my profession (I have since moved to advertising and now defend that profession). Kiechel covers the rise of strategy consulting firms--BCG, McKinsey, and Bain--and notable business school professors who contributed to the strategy revolution. His background provides the credibility to do so, he was a former Managing Editor at Fortune magazine and was the Editorial Director of Harvard Business Publishing from 1998 to 2002.
He sees the best strategists as objective intellectuals who see patterns of evidence and put them through conceptual frameworks to produce pragmatic insights. This largely began in the sixties and seventies when strategy began to be systematized and integrated. Cost, customer and competitors were the three primary areas strategists looked for patterns to exploit. In the nineties, the practices were more fad-like including reengineering and total quality management. This was the era I practiced in and I felt like the lone voice extolling the virtue of a simple but robust strategic planning process. I jumped for joy when in June, 1997, BusinessWeek had on their cover, The Return of Strategic Planning: Once More With Feeling. Which was the pivot point for Taylorism-like monitoring and measurement processes becoming more humanistic and holistic in their design.
The author tells some great industry stories but what struck me is just how important the role of strategy and management consultants is to business. The influence that such a small number of people and firms have had on modern business is truly staggering. This is where the subtitle of the book comes from: The Secret Intellectual History of the New Corporate World. Just a handful of models and frameworks devised by a small number of minds have been used by countless businesses to generate their strategies - this is what is so amazing.
From my experience, the best strategists retain a child-like wonder and a natural intellectual curiosity that is backed by analytic rigor - an incredibly hard combination of skills to possess in one person. I suggest this book only if you are interested in the history it covers and/or are a follower of the strategist value debate. In other words, this is not a strategy how-to book. Other books in this area I have read are The Management Myth, The McKinsey Mind, Rip-Off!, House of Lies, and Consulting Demons - so you may want to check them out too.

The Mirror Test: Is Your Business Really Breathing

This book is a business classic. It is written in a refreshing style with, believe it or not, an in-your-face attitude, but an attitude that pairs well with the no nonsense, practical business advice offered. It is about scaling from small business to Fortune 500 and back again. It is about real ideas that have been tested, tried and applied. It is written in an engaging story telling format. I read the book on a flight from Dulles to Vancouver and by the time I was finished my mind was spinning off the pages with thoughts on how I could impact my business by applying some of Hayzlett's concepts. In short, "The Mirror Test: Is your Business Really Breathing?" left me breathless just thinking of all of the possibilities that this creative and authoritative writer has shared.
Now I'm going back to read it again and create a list of to do's to get done.

Harvard Business Review on Leading in Turbulent Times (Harvard Business Review Paperback Series) Review

Harvard Business Review on Leading in Turbulent Times (Harvard Business Review Paperback Series)

When I was offered a chance to review a book on leadership I knew my father would be interested. As a retired military commander now in the business world his perspective is two-fold. Here is a brief look on what he thought of the Harvard Business review pinpointing on leading in turbulent times.
~
The importance of quality leadership is the main thread woven throughout the eight articles of "Leading in Turbulent Times". Although this collection of essays was published in 2003 and mostly refers to the economic challenges from the beginning of the decade, the principles of leadership remain the same today. Many readers may miss the main theme as they attempt to compare our current recession to that of the past and dismiss many of the contributing author's thoughts on business leadership.
It is clear when you read this book that an understanding of our economic past and the poor leadership decisions made will help to avoid making the same mistakes again. Whether you are a manager, executive, or an up and coming employee, this book from the Harvard Business Review series will offer an insight to handling the real challenges of leadership. Setting a course to reach the company's vision for the future, rightsizing and layoffs, anticipating and preparing for volatile markets, understanding resiliency in people and organizations, and understanding your core competencies and seizing opportunities is explained in easy to understand and focused language.

Co-Opetition : A Revolution Mindset That Combines Competition and Cooperation : The Game Theory Strategy That's Changing the Game of Business Review

Co-Opetition : A Revolution Mindset That Combines Competition and Cooperation : The Game Theory Strategy That's Changing the Game of Business
Average Reviews:

Just out of college I was very enthusiastic to use game theory to solve business problems. But never found a way to use it. That was forty years ago. This is the first book that transforms a wonderful theory into something you can apply. The three key concepts are the "value net", PARTS and role-playing. The value net is a simple model of the players to consider. Not just your business and your client, but also the competitors, suppliers and complementors (a complimentor adds value to your product like mustard to hot dogs). PARTS are five ways to look at the game. P from players-who are they; may be add new ones, A from Added Value- how much value do you add to the game, if any, R from Rules-can the rules be changed, T from tactics, and S from Scope- making the game bigger. With role-playing I refer to putting yourself in the shoes of all the other players. How do they see the game? The book contains many practical examples. Some of these do not require game theory to think of them but without game theory you would never see all the interesting options. The book also has "spiritual" content. It shows how to find "win-win" theories and avoid price wars that are "lose-lose".Very worthwhile.

Heads Up: How to Anticipate Business Surprises and Seize Opportunities First Review

Heads Up: How to Anticipate Business Surprises and Seize Opportunities First
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Business "surprises" occur with an alarming frequency. It is an understatement to say they exact a considerable toll on the organization.
According to Kenneth G. McGee, even the worst catastrophes rarely happen without warning. The author is a group vice president and research fellow at Gartner, Inc., a consultancy that specializes in information technology. His book, Heads Up, is about predicting the present.
Managers need to understand what is happening now and how these current events will impact future success. This involves extracting raw empirical information, analyzing it and determining its meaning and implications.
So what is new, you ask? McGee answers managers do not need all the data to understand the present. Only enough to answer the question, "Where are we right now in meeting our corporate goals?"
To an effective executive, this current information always reveals opportunities to improve results. There is a tendency to confuse real-time information with real-time response. In the perfect situation, the following processes happen in the background between the time when an event happens and that event's impact is felt.
1.Information related to the event is monitored.
2.A change in the information is captured.
3.The information is analyzed.
4.The information is reported.
5.A response is initiated.
No manager can afford to monitor all his information sources. To determine which sources to monitor, information should be filtered using the following Identification Model:
1.List goals for the planning period.
2.Prioritize them.
3.Evaluate them.
4.List causal events.
5.Prioritize the causal events.
6.Evaluate whether the real-time information will enable the executive to respond effectively.
Each candidate generated by the Identification Model is subjected to the Justification Model:
1.Does the goal the information further the corporate vision and mission?
2.Does the goal meet current corporate priorities?
3.Is the information material to the goal?
4.What is the goal's corporate impact?
McGee's book goes beyond the usual real-time hype. It will help executives anticipate events and changes. The result: potential disasters will be transformed into opportunities.

This book offers a new set of metrics for identifying, analyzing, and responding to the right information at the right time - helping companies to avoid disasters and seize opportunities. Based on exclusive research into recent business catastrophes - and drawing parallels to a range of nonbusiness disasters from 9/11 to the Challenger disaster - "Heads Up" outlines a four-step approach managers can use to identify which pieces of information merit real-time delivery, and as importantly, which do not. McGee then provides a practical methodology - real time opportunity detection - for monitoring, analyzing, and responding to that critical information in time to ward off negative surprises and jump on potential opportunities ahead of competitors.
