Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose Review

Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There has been quite a crop of customer service related books recently, as well as the classics in the field. They each have their own angle, and I'm going to use this brief review as a chance to summarize where Delivering Happiness falls in this group as well as how to complement it with a couple of other books with different approaches that make for a very well-rounded outlook in tandem.
As far as [[Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose:]]
I was privileged to get a galley of this much-anticipated title. It's the story of an entrepreneur and the different paths he took (or twists in the one path, depending on how you look at it). A fascinating story, and not just because of the bezillion dollars he got selling the company to amazon. (And: how can you not like a guy who calls his warehouse WHISKY (WareHouse Inventory and Supply in Kentucky -- Page 118)? Heavy emphasis on his pursuit of happiness for himself and his staff -- very admirable and inspiring.
If you're looking to directly transform your customer service/customer experience, you may want to add to Tony's inspiring autobiography some directly actionable books to help you turn his ideas into techniques you can put into practice right away -- and that are highly consonant with Tony's pro-employee, pro-customer, outlook -- I suggest two books --one a classic, one that's new this Spring -- that can take care of this for you.
1. Exceptional Service, Exceptional Profit: The Secrets of Building a Five-Star Customer Service Organization
This, like Tony Hsieh's book, is a new title this Spring. Practical, useful insights from the insiders who created high-tech startups and The Ritz-Carlton. Contains specific prescriptions for how to handle many different customer situations like they're handled at the companies profiled inside (incl: Zappos, Ritz-Carlton, Netflix, Charlie Trotter's, Lexus,), appendices with scripts you can use right away, etc.
2. [[Customers For Life: How To Turn That One-Time Buyer Into a Lifetime Customer]]
This is an older title, and a classic: how a texas cadillac dealer, of all people, mastered great customer service. Extremely simple, but never simplistic. Has inspired many business leaders since it was written. Many pages have usable, actionable insights. If you don't have this in your library (and in your psyche) yet, why not? You can probably grab it used for next to nothing, and the wisdom is timeless enough that you hardly need the "latest revised edition" if you need to save a few dollars.

Age of Conversation 3: It's Time to Get Busy

Most business books take 200 pages to explain one basic notion. Not Age of Conversation. Since this is a collaborative book by over 170 people, pretty much every page contains a stand-alone insight. This is a perfect book to pick up in lost moments to quickly read a couple of thought-starting entries. Even better, because the 170 marketing, PR and communications experts actually communicated whiel they were writing this, after a while it turns out the stand-alone insights are all connected to form an interesting collection where many ideas build one greater story. Very cool.

Following the success of the first two editions, Age of Conversation 3: It's Time to Get Busy! again kick-starts the discussion about how the global marketing landscape is changing. With over 170 of the world's leading marketers, writers, thinkers and creative innovators contributing chapters, this collaborative work investigates the roles that community, conversation, experimentation, engagement, and collaboration play in shaping the 21st century's economy of ideas. As businesses, public and private organizations, and individuals realize that there's much more to social media and its impacts than meets the eye, Age of Conversation 3 shows us which platforms, tools, and approaches truly work, as well as those that simply don't. "Social media" may be the business buzzword (or, buzz-phrase) of 2010, but what's happening beyond the hype? What new practices and guidelines is social media imposing on business-as-usual? And what makes this type of media so much different than the media we're all used to?From the boardroom to the locus of customer interaction, social media is transforming the way we do business. The impact of this is being felt in every customer interaction, each business decision, and even in the way we source, retain and engage our staffs. This third book in the Age of Conversation series is crowdsourced, bringing together the world's leading practitioners to share their stories, perspectives, observations, and strategies. Their diverse insights and varying approaches are a reflection of the global, changing nature of business today.

"I Love You More Than My Dog": Five Decisions That Drive Extreme Customer Loyalty in Good Times and Bad Review

I Love You More Than My Dog: Five Decisions That Drive Extreme Customer Loyalty in Good Times and Bad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a one-of-a-kind book who's title "I Love You More Than My Dog" tells you how to create emotional bonds for life with your customers...the type of faithful relationships dog lovers have with their dogs. The 5 decisions Jeanne discusses that drive extreme, 'for life' customer loyalty in good times and bad are right on. The book provides every day tools that you can use to understand how you make decisions -- not only for your business, but for you personally - to become a beloved company with devoted customers.
Jeanne's book builds on her equally strong first book, "Chief Customer Officer", which provides specific methodologies for building customer centric organizations. Her new book builds on her already strong credibility as a customer zealot and provides real life examples of companies that demonstrate the 5 decisions every day, and have the business results to prove it.
"I Love You More Than My Dog" is a must read for anyone who wants to understand and act on the difference between having customers 'like' you and really 'love you' for life. More than your dog.
I'd give it 10 stars if I could.
Karyn F. Seattle, Washington

This book is a business classic. It is written in a refreshing style with, believe it or not, an in-your-face attitude, but an attitude that pairs well with the no nonsense, practical business advice offered. It is about scaling from small business to Fortune 500 and back again. It is about real ideas that have been tested, tried and applied. It is written in an engaging story telling format. I read the book on a flight from Dulles to Vancouver and by the time I was finished my mind was spinning off the pages with thoughts on how I could impact my business by applying some of Hayzlett's concepts. In short, "The Mirror Test: Is your Business Really Breathing?" left me breathless just thinking of all of the possibilities that this creative and authoritative writer has shared.
Now I'm going back to read it again and create a list of to do's to get done.

Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead: What Every Business Can Learn from the Most Iconic Band in History Review

Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead: What Every Business Can Learn from the Most Iconic Band in History
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was a weird weekend; by 10:00 AM Friday, I had received a copy of Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead in the mail, and had borrowed a "Fast Read" copy of Jonathan Kellerman's latest Alex Delaware mystery, Deception, at the library.
I read a little of each on the way home. Both books engaged me on the first page, as books by David Meerman Scott and Jonathan Kellerman tend to be. Both quickly "hooked" my interest.
However, faced with the choice of what to read, I finished Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead first. I became engrossed in the back story, or explanation, of the reasons a rock group I had long observed took the steps it did, and how it benefited their career and solidified their position.
It helped that I also resonated with the author's first-hand stories of attending numerous Grateful Dead concerts and visiting the Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California at Santa Cruz. The photographs provided atmosphere, the anecdotes provided story, and the book's tight writing and strong organization contributed to a "high momentum" and fascinating reading experience...a "high-momentum page-turner" that teaches fundamental marketing lessons and values.
Because the ideas come through so clearly, Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead begs the question: "Why doesn't every business act like the Grateful Dead?" Why don't all businesses "Put Fans in the Front Row?" Why don't all businesses "Embrace Technology" and "Cut Out the Middleman?" Why don't all businesses "Bring People on an Odyssey?"
The lessons are obvious, and--most important--they are reinforced with concrete examples of how other other businesses far removed from rock and roll have profited from the same marketing ideas. Sidebars and summaries emphasize the lessons and organize them for easy reference.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I was reading a copy sent by the publisher. BUT, receiving a book doesn't mean you have to read it! I read it because it's a great book, and I ended up sending two copies to long-time clients in Seattle. And, only after I finished Marketing Lessons, did I return to my Jonathan Kellerman mystery.

Startup Guide to Guerrilla Marketing: A Simple Battle Plan for First-Time Marketers Review

Startup Guide to Guerrilla Marketing: A Simple Battle Plan for First-Time Marketers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I accidentally found this book in the airport, when I was looking for reading material for a long flight, and I am glad I did. The cover is a little lame, with the sub-title "A Simple Battle Plan for the First-Time Marketers." It probably should have read "It's the phone stupid! You've got to track what's going on or you're out of business!", but that probably wouldn't sell or would not have been P.C. enough for the publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
All kidding aside, it probably should have read "The Secret Weapon to Your Business Success"
What the book did do, was illustrate the building blocks for any successful marketing plan, where your business doesn't rely solely on the Internet, shopping carts or walk-ins - which is just about 90% of all businesses I can think of. The book forces you to ask a lot of tough questions about your business - questions that, in my experience as a business consultant, are going to make you geometrically more money and reduce your stress.
Instead of trying to scam you into buying something that is not going to help you, the Levinsons offer "common sense" ways of improving your business and they help prevent you being ripped off by expensive or time consuming leads.
Chapter 4, entitled "The High Powered Weapons in Your Office", is where the book really starts getting into the meat. "What is the weapon they are talking about?", you might ask - it's the telephone!
The Levinsons go on to say "there will rarely be as intimate a moment as those you spend on the phone with your customers and prospects." They then offer some no-brainer advice on taking control of your phones - advice, by the way, that I have found to be very true - and also offer excellent worksheets to help you. I can't tell you how many incoming sales calls I have listened to, where the operator did not even ask the prospect their name!
Among other topics in the chapter :
Use the person's name
Analyze yourself
Working with a script, or no script.
Chapter 7, entitled "The top Ten Attitudes of a Guerrilla Marketer", gives Attitude 7: Telephone Demeanor. "Of all the minority groups on earth, the most special to you are the people who call your business on the telephone?" - Incoming calls. The Levinsons go on to tell the story of how they saved Midas $10 Million dollars in six months, with negligible costs. Who wants to know how they did that? I did!
The Levinsons then ask the important question "Are your customers made to feel like interruptions of your business or like the reason you're in business in the first place? All too often, potential customers call a business and are treated discourteously by a busy operator.." What happens? No-brainer - the customer goes to your competitor.
In Chapter 8, the Levinsons define "Guerrilla Marketing" and talk about how to measure it - hint, it's not impressions, hits or sales, it's profits. On page 96, the book then goes into how you should also count up relationships. This is the key to long term profits. "Points of contact are rarely found in big biz marketing strategies". Think about how your telephone is answered. What are your outgoing messages? What message is your customer receiving? And other tough questions.
The book also makes you think about whether you are selling the product or the experience? Selling the experience is something Starbucks knows well, but this frequently gets ignored by most other companies, especially when business is good.
Chapter 18, entitled "Maintaining your Campaign", says that "the toughest part of your guerrilla marketing program will be maintaining it" and "Creating it and launching it are relative pieces of cake". The Levinsons refer to that as the "glamorous" part. In my experience I have also found this to be true - most businesses use marketing which goes something like this: create ad, run it in the paper, TV or radio, wonder what happened, reflect on whether the marketing people are good (even if it's they themselves who did it), blame the economy or competitor for the failure of the campaign. It all goes back to transparency and accountability, and whether you embrace it or not.
Chapter 18 also lists the Levinsons' "17 Secrets of Guerrilla Marketing that help you Maintain Your Attack". Number 10 is golden "Measurement. You can actually double your profits by measuring the results of your marketing. Some weapons hit bulls eyes. Others miss the target. Unless you measure, you won't know which are which." Based on my research of my customers' off line marketing, this is definitely true.
Secret 13 of 17 is "Armament". Armament is defined as "the equipment necessary to wage and win battles." The armament of guerrillas is technology. The fact that many business still ignore this advice is probably why they have devoted Chapter 19 to tracking.
In Chapter 19, entitled "Keeping Track", the Levinsons talk about the importance of tracking what marketing succeeded and which failed. "Without (tracking) it's just another period of groping and praying, which has not been proven to be the right approach." They emphasize how important it is to track, even though you are going to hate it. This chapter is where I felt a bit let down. It kind of makes me think about dieting - you know you should be losing weight, but what's the best diet? You need to know. The Levinsons never go into any truly workable solutions. This is a shame and is probably why the one other positive review on Amazon.com, rating this great book, had the following comment by Maximus:-
"Can you elaborate and give a better review rather than just say it's a great book, and give it 5 stars? I bought the book and it is the complete opposite of what you said. Have you even read it?"
Ouch! That was harsh.
Firstly, I think to even mention "off-line tracking of marketing campaigns" is something that the authors should be complemented on. This is usually a totally neglected subject. But, here are my two problems with this chapter:-
(1) The Levinsons advise businesses to train all employees to ask prospects "How did you hear about us?", asking the customer to be specific. This advice is inherently flawed for several reasons:-
(a) When you ask most customers how they heard about you, they will quickly say, "over the TV". The propensity for people to answer that way throws off the validity of that type of data. (b) It take a lot of time and complex processes to compile this flawed data. (c) As any commissioned sales person will tell you, the longer that you spend getting talking about things that are not relevant to the customer's needs - the lower the probability of you closing the sale. In other words, making the interaction ought to be about solving the customers needs. I know of one auto dealership that tracked their advertising with the Levinsons' method, by recording the information in their "own" notebooks. The employees were then supposed to enter that data into the dealership database, but that rarely happened. This was one of the biggest challenges for the General Manager and something the company really struggled with. So, that to me was flawed.
(2)The second thing that bothers me about this chapter is that when they say "track", what they are talking about? What do they mean? Pulling out a note book, like my example above? Creating spread sheets for all the sales people? Does that work? Yes, this why they probably spent so much time trying to convince the reader to do it. Yes, if you smoke you should quit. But How? That question is never answered. Readers need to know how to implement this strategy.
On Page 212, the Levinsons talk about "Testing". You must test all of your communications. A strategy here is to place the same ad in two publications. One will pull more than the other, but you need to know why. Testing is the answer. Test photos, sizes, fonts, colors, timing, headlines etc. Obviously, if you are not tracking then you certainly are not testing. So, the Levinsons had to add one more chapter and it's got great ideas, but again it's missing the "how".
Chapter 20, entitled "Improving your Marketing", is devoted to different things to test and how your marketing has to be "flexible because of the speed of change". Another great idea, but how do you test? Again, the Levinsons don't fully tell the reader.
The last chapter 21, is putting it all together. But again, my problem here is that they never address the biggest challenge of Guerrilla Marketing - how do you manage this process using the main armament of Guerrillas, technology? How do you get your people to do it, when they are busy concentrating on doing their job or selling?
Summary: All in all, this book is thought-provoking and definitely worth the price and the time spent reading it, despite the fact that a couple of important details are left out that would have completed the Levinsons' very logical plan.

Credibility is the lifeblood of an organization, and Pete Blackshaw's six drivers of credibility should be indelibly etched onto the reverse of every CEO's business card. They are the essentials of brand and corporate trustworthiness and they are the foundation for Pete's new book, "Satisfied Customers Tell Three Friends, Angry Customers Tell 3,000"--absolute must reading for every one of those CEOs, every front-line/online company spokesperson and, for that matter, anyone within an organization that truly cares about nurturing perhaps the most valuable yet often elusive organizational asset.

Public affairs professionals will want to keep a copy within easy reach. (Mine now sits in front of my "Roget's Thesaurus.") Customer Relations and Consumer Affairs personnel should read it at once, then again, and--likewise--keep this easy to digest textbook at the ready as you go about talking to, emailing or--more likely--instant messaging internet-savvy customers and consumers.
Pete Blackshaw writes with the common sense clarity of a consumer, yet as readers we benefit from his well-honed expertise in social media and interactive marketing as well as his own well-earned credibility in the vast and potent online marketplace. Pete has written a fine and timely how-to-book on the art of relationship building in a business world being powerfully influenced by consumer-generated media.

Peter Drucker, who Jack Welch called "the greatest management thinker of the last century," suggested that businesspeople have clear answers to the following three questions:
1. What is your business?
2. Who is your customer?
3. What does your customer consider value?
In "Real-Time Marketing & PR," bestselling author David Meerman Scott urges businesspeople to consider a fourth question:
"How can you deliver value faster?"
With changes brought on by the internet and other forms of technology, the concept of delivering value faster has become, for many, a governing competitive advantage.
In this new effort, Scott (who, in full disclosure, is a client and friend) tells the stories of people and organizations that have acted on real-time opportunities, or have built cultures based on delivering value at breakneck speed.
Scott writes, for instance, about how TMZ and Politico regularly scoop larger news sources, because TMZ and Politico operate on a model that focuses almost exclusively on "breaking news and instant analysis." He tells us, too, about how ClickSquared gets better open-rates and more upsells when the emails they send are triggered by what's happening to recipients in the moment. Also, in an in depth analysis of the "United Breaks Guitars" story, he discusses how Taylor Guitars and Calton Cases grabbed attention for their brands by taking prompt action on a piece of the whole.
If you've read other books by Scott, you know he provides readers with plenty of tactics. This book is no different. In it, you'll learn about using social media, crowdsourcing, videos, mobile devices, media alerts, communications guidelines, and other tools, which will speed up the way you collect and act upon information.
The book's greatest service, however, isn't in its tactics. Instead, it's in helping readers develop a "now" mindset - one that will help them take action in a situation as it's happening -- when acting matters most.
Once you read Scott's sage counsel and entertaining stories, you'll likely see your business environment in new ways. With speed as a lens, you'll spot opportunities and take action with a swiftness that may surprise you.

If you care about your reputation, the reputation of your business or organization, or for that matter, the ones you have any affiliation with, then you must read Larry Weber's new book, Sticks & Stones. You won't think about reputation the same way again!

"Larry Weber has made an important contribution to helping any leader understand how to manage and protect reputation in a digital world. The influences on reputation have spun out of control, and this book is a highly actionable approach to move from reacting to managing one of every organization's most important assets."—Michael E. Porter, Bishop William Lawrence University Professor, Harvard Business School
"In Sticks and Stones, Larry Weber presents a compelling look at the challenges of protecting corporate reputation in a world where company information can cross borders and gain momentum in an instant via the Internet. Drawing on his keen eye for communications trends, Larry offers practical advice for navigating this ever-changing environment. Corporate leaders would be wise to embrace his counsel."—Ron Sargent, Chairman and CEO, Staples, Inc.
"Businesses no longer control their brands. At best, they can influence the communities of constituents who debate, shape, and refine their definition of what the brand means to them. Marketers and business executives can tap into these conversations to form incredibly rich and lasting bonds or allow themselves to be rolled by them. Larry Weber understood this dynamic long before most commu-nications thought leaders. In Sticks and Stones, he delivers not only bountiful examples of the best and worst practices in reputation management, but also practical advice that any leader can use to understand and shape reputation in this complex new world. This is a must-read book for the modern marketer."—Paul Gillin, author, The New Influencers and Secrets of Social Media Marketing
"In today's interconnected world of social networking, 24/7 blogging and Twitter, a company's livelihood relies, in large measure, on its ability to build a reputable online presence. Sticks and Stones is a must-read for any leader in business, academia, or politics who wants to achieve and maintain a 21st-century, online competitive advantage."—Deborah Wince-Smith, President, Council on Competitiveness

Personally I believe Twitter could be the most important thing that has happened to the Internet since Google came on the scene. This great little book demonstrates how the business community should embrace the service and perhaps even more importantly how not to. With real life examples of how businesses are using twitter to interact with their customers, prospects, business partners and in some cases (Dell) turnover a tidy sum of cash through the service - this is a great source of information for business who know they should be on twitter but just don't get it yet.

There are not many really useful business tools that can lay claim to being 100% free. Twitter does, however, and while the opportunities it presents aren't really obvious at first glance, they're still manifold. Business users are learning new ways to turn Twitter to their advantage each and every day. Surprisingly, one of the best uses of Twitter is to add some human personality to you, your brand, and your company. One of the worst uses? Posting links to your own websites, day after day after day.I - Introduction to TwitterII - How Business Has Embraced Twitter III - Social StrategiesIV - Using Twitter to Fuel Your Bottom LineV -Twitter Best Practices and StrategiesHenry J. I am a young professional still trying to get a grasp on the outburst of the social media scene; Twitter for Good was an excellent "how to" guide for understanding the fundamental usefulness of Twitter. Claire (via T.W.E.E.T.) sets out a clear, focused method for getting a message out, marketing a business, driving a campaign, and actually making stuff happen. It's very well-written, fun, and wonderfully (thankfully) easy to understand; it's a must-read for anyone who wants to make their business (or cause) current/important/accessible/global. Kudos to Diaz-Ortiz and Twitter alike.

Social Media for Business: 101 Ways to Grow Your Business Without Wasting Your Time

Social Media seems to be the prerogative of the Gen X/Yers BUT us boomers have a lot to gain from using Social Media effectively.
And here is finally a book written by someone who IS a boomer and understands the need for not wasting our time on SM that is not effective for us or our businesses.
I"m no newbie, having been involved with technology since the 70s and I've been using LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook for a while already, but in each chapter in the book I found tips and pieces of advice to use. My copy now looks very dog-eared from all the pages I"ve read and want to refer back to.
Just a well written book that gives you the facts and steers away from pitfalls. I don't recommend a lot of books that I read, but this is one that I can do without any hesitation. If you're looking to dip your toes into Social Media or get more advanced and strategic about it, you can't go wrong. AND it's under 200 pages so not overwhelming either.

Real-Time Marketing for Business Growth: How to Use Social Media, Measure Marketing, and Create a Culture of Execution Review

Real-Time Marketing for Business Growth: How to Use Social Media, Measure Marketing, and Create a Culture of Execution

I was looking for a marketing book that would help me reinvent marketing and sales strategies for our organization. I already knew a lot of the basics and was looking for a fresh approach that would help us compete more effectively since our market has changed considerably over the past couple of years. I also needed a book that would guide me through the social media jungle to figure out where I should focus time and money to get the most for our investment. I was not only impressed with the social media advice and recommendations (there is a whole social media strategy and planning guide section) but the entire marketing process that is described as a six step process called PRAISE which stands for Purpose, Research, Analyze, Strategize, Implement, Evaluate and Execute. I think most people (like me) want to go right to lead generation programs like direct mail, email marketing, internet advertising, etc. What I learned from this book was how to create better strategies that would help us find new customers and new markets for our services. By understanding how to make our customer's experiences more valuable and our services stand out from all our competitors, it was so much easier to develop a plan for the marketing tactics we should use. I also learned several ways to measure our marketing that were new ideas and methods I hadn't heard of before.
A nice bonus of this book is all the ideas about company culture and how to use culture as part of your marketing strategy. We already have a great company culture but I never really thought about how it was connected to marketing. The information presented on this topic alone is well worth the price of the book. The 10 Culture Rules at the end of the book is full of ideas that wil benefit not only employees but customers as well. Lots of substance in this book.
-Michelle O'Connor, SVP Learning Strategy & Innovation, CMR Institute
