Age of Conversation 3: It's Time to Get Busy

Most business books take 200 pages to explain one basic notion. Not Age of Conversation. Since this is a collaborative book by over 170 people, pretty much every page contains a stand-alone insight. This is a perfect book to pick up in lost moments to quickly read a couple of thought-starting entries. Even better, because the 170 marketing, PR and communications experts actually communicated whiel they were writing this, after a while it turns out the stand-alone insights are all connected to form an interesting collection where many ideas build one greater story. Very cool.

Following the success of the first two editions, Age of Conversation 3: It's Time to Get Busy! again kick-starts the discussion about how the global marketing landscape is changing. With over 170 of the world's leading marketers, writers, thinkers and creative innovators contributing chapters, this collaborative work investigates the roles that community, conversation, experimentation, engagement, and collaboration play in shaping the 21st century's economy of ideas. As businesses, public and private organizations, and individuals realize that there's much more to social media and its impacts than meets the eye, Age of Conversation 3 shows us which platforms, tools, and approaches truly work, as well as those that simply don't. "Social media" may be the business buzzword (or, buzz-phrase) of 2010, but what's happening beyond the hype? What new practices and guidelines is social media imposing on business-as-usual? And what makes this type of media so much different than the media we're all used to?From the boardroom to the locus of customer interaction, social media is transforming the way we do business. The impact of this is being felt in every customer interaction, each business decision, and even in the way we source, retain and engage our staffs. This third book in the Age of Conversation series is crowdsourced, bringing together the world's leading practitioners to share their stories, perspectives, observations, and strategies. Their diverse insights and varying approaches are a reflection of the global, changing nature of business today.

Vince Harris' book, The Productivity Epiphany: Leading Edge Ideas on Time Management, Self Management, Communication and Becoming More Productive in Any Area of Life is great for today's fast paced lifestyles. Written in a homespun storytelling manner I found the book extremely fun to read with lots of solid and useful content.
The subjects the book covers, Time Management, Self-Management and Improving your communication skills, are subjects we all need to learn and master. We should never stop learning in any of these areas. A lot of books that cover these subjects do so in a dry, preachy way that bores the heck out of me. This is not one of those books. This book was a refreshing break.
Written in several short chapters that tell a story designed to drive home the point of the lesson, the author has made it easy to learn a quick little lesson that can be applied during the day.
I highly recommend reading this book.

The Leader's Voice: How Leaders Communicate During Turbulent Times Review

The Leader's Voice: How Leaders Communicate During Turbulent Times
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Leader's Voice" reveals how to change static communication and poor performance into dynamic communication for extraordinary results. A manager speaks to only ensure the job gets done. The leader's voice uses facts, emotions and symbols to motivate and create change. A leader carries out authenticity, and foresight to not only get the job done, but to also promote a willing to go the extra mile. Providing plenty of proven examples from leaders throughout history, with the ABC's of leadership, "The Leader's Voice" equips the reader with the necessary information to remove any obstacles preventing success.
Boyd and Crossland practice what they preach. Their written communication style is direct and to the point, with the determination to make a difference. Using the pictures to stir emotion, the various type fonts to personify symbols and the straight facts from the lives of other leaders immediately captured my attention. They did a fantastic job organizing the material and appealing to my creative core. I would recommend "The Leader's Voice" to anyone attempting to motivate a crowd of one to one hundred and one or more.
Now let me reflect . . .
I used to complain about my mother fixing so much tuna casserole. Her response, "There are alot of starving people in the world. You should be thankful we have food on the table." When my father knew I didn't feel as smart as my sister because of my grades, he would tell me, "You're intelligent. You just need to study a little longer." And when I cried after being hit by a car, my grandmother's words consoled me with, "If God looks over the sparrow, surely he'll take care of you." These voices addressed me with emotion. These voices encouraged me with facts. These voices motivated me with symbols. I now realize these are the voices of the leaders in my life.

The authors define the core principles of effective leadership communication. In a volatile business climate like today's, the ability to communicate authentically and powerfully is the crucial leadership competence. Kennedy, Margaret Thatcher and Martin Luther King, Jr. commanded through communication?Read this book and apply the principles. You'll discover the power in your voice! The Leader's Voice is backed up by twenty years of communication research. Reviewing over 1,100 examples of leadership communication, and studying the inferences of modern neurological science has led the authors to a simple, stimulating leadership communication model. Leaders, at their best, communicate simultaneously on three channels: Factual, Emotional and Symbolic (FES).Clarke and Crossland demonstrate how FES can be used in public presentations, one-on-one meetings and even via email to enhance a leader's effectiveness and ability to move his or her constituency to greater conviction, consciousness and competence.

The Action Learning Guidebook: A Real-Time Strategy for Problem Solving Training Design, and Employee Development (Book & Diskette) Review

The Action Learning Guidebook: A Real-Time Strategy for Problem Solving Training Design, and Employee Development (Book and Diskette)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"This book", writes W.Rothwell in his Introduction, "is a primer that serves a three-fold purpose. The first purpose is to show how Action Learning can be used as a real-time strategy for problem finding or problem solving. It can be valuable tool by which to tackle business problems and meet business needs. The second purpose is to show how Action Learning can be applied to training design. It is intended to stimulate the thinking of instructional designers about a new way to analyze needs, design and develop training, deliver training, and evaluate results. The third purpose is to show how Action Learning can be maximized to build intellectual capital and enhance human talent. In this sense, the book shows how team or group work can be become a means for developing people in its own right."
In this context, W.Rothwell :
* defines Action Learning, lists barriers that may prevent its application, and introduces a model of the Action Learning process.
* reviews occasions when applying Action Learning is and is not appropriate.
* focuses on who decides when Action Learning is appropriate, how decision makers recognize situations suitable for the use of Action Learning, and when a problem or improvement opportunity should be handed over to an Action Learning team.
* focuses on issues associated with recruiting, selecting, and orienting members of an Action Learning team.
* examines the team facilitator's role.
* focuses on the application of Action Learning as a means for identifying and solving problems or addressing other organizational issues.
* describes the application of Action Learning to training design.
* explains advantages and disadvantages of using an Action Learning team to design training.
* focuses on evaluating Action Learning efforts and on debriefing Action Learning teams and individuals who participated on those teams.
I highly recommend this invaluable study to all line managers, trainers and HR professionals.

How to Persuade People Who Don't Want to be Persuaded: Get What You Want-Every Time

Having had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Bauer speak, I eagerly looked forward to reading his co-authored book. His commanding "Stage Presence" dressed in a tailored suit stands in my memory like a spot light in the night. This presence, one which ultimately mesmerizes you into believing that what ever he says is some how correct.
That said, I eagerly picked up his book and started reading, only to bog down every time I picked up! With massive effort I finally finished the material and was left wondering what "The Heck I Had Read"?
Was this a Sales Training Book, Was This a Simply Magic Tricks Book, or was this just a way to get published?
The book is filled with slight of hand, misdirection and numerous illusions all illustrating anything but The Title of the Book!
It is unlikely that anyone would be able to persuade anybody to do anything after finishing it...But Entertain You Might!
This book is truly simplistic but masterful in its ability to make much out of little! It is also unlikely the average reader of this book would ever resort to the slight of hand or magic tricks purported as Ice Breakers in any sales presentation. Perhaps more usable at the next family reunion or reception.
Granted if you already have a background in magic this book would likely be most entertaining. It is also unlikely that any body would be fooled by the presentation or intent of this message or your implementation in a business setting.
Perhaps after four or five martinis the story would be different
In summation....to utilize a famous marketing quote.....Where's the Beef?
Or in this case ...substance.

Connie Podesta has written a great line of books in her career, and this is no exception! I've gotten a lot out of reading most of her books and am really impressed with this one. It's got great How-to info on gaining the trust and respect of women so you can finally close the deal with them.
Now, I've never needed any of these sales guides, but everything in there seems great and makes sense. I'm such a fan of her work that I felt I should read this one too. And I'd say it's actually helped with my overall communication skills. I loved this book. Other great works by her: Life Would Be Easy If It Weren't for Other People (Live) & How to Be the Person Successful Companies Fight to keep

Would you benefit in your business or in your social life if you became a better advocate for yourself? Unless you are already quite capable of asserting yourself, the answer is probably yes. The problem is that assertiveness training has a bad reputation, as author Sue Bishop acknowledges. In this short, easy book, she suggests ways that individuals can change their behavior to become more confident. You can learn at your own pace, using the book's self-tests, exercises and comments. Bishop's handbook does not contain very much that is new, but it is a good tool for people who would like to teach themselves the basics. We recommend this book to those who want to find out how to persuade others and stick up for themselves. If you're a manager mired in meekness, here's your ticket to the limelight.

Powerful Times: Rising to the Challenge of Our Uncertain World (paperback) Review

Powerful Times: Rising to the Challenge of Our Uncertain World (paperback)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Few times does a book have such a powerful effect on me. Not coincidentally is this 2005 book by Wharton School Publishing titled "Powerful Times". The book is written by the CEO of the Global Business Network, a group self-described as a "future-oriented network and consulting firm".
Any assumptions you come to the book with will be strongly challenged, not to convince you to steer left or right, but rather to open up your mind to one clear and indisputable truth: these are changing times, and we might as well realize that, in order to be able to deal with the world we are embarked on and the world of the coming decade.
Kelly presents the reader with a deep yet easy-to-follow set of trends, most of which are represented by opposite forces pulling in different directions. Chances are you may identify yourself with one of the forces in most of the trends, yet Kelly's effectiveness lies in his ability to present all forces in a very balanced way, which allows you to open yourself to what others may be thinking.
Once all the trends have been covered, he goes into what he considers to be the three most likely scenarios to take place in the coming decade, depending on the outcome of two basic yet fundamental crossroads we are in the process of going through. He emphasizes that no single scenario should be expected to prevail in a unique way, but rather to dominate the scene, "sprinkled" with elements from the other scenarios.
Finally, he provides the reader with an extensive framework for him to assess his place and that of his company in this new world we're entering. This framework, along with a handful of additional tools and resources, is provided through the book's web site at www.PowerfulTimes.net.
I cannot do less but give the book five shining stars for shedding a brilliant light on some of today's impossibly contradictory issues, and giving us readers a tool with which to steer through the troubled waters of the coming decade.

The Leader's Guide to Storytelling: Mastering the Art and Discipline of Business Narrative (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Review

The Leader's Guide to Storytelling: Mastering the Art and Discipline of Business Narrative (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those who have read Denning's The Springboard and/or Squirrel Inc. already know that he specializes in knowledge management and organizational storytelling. In this volume, he develops his core concepts in much greater depth, acknowledging his high regard for Peter Senge's vision of the Total Learning Organization as delineated in his pioneer volume, The Fifth Discipline. Briefly, in it Senge suggests that there are five separate but interrelated "disciplines": building a Shared Vision which enables an organization to build a common commitment to the same long-term goals; formulating Mental Models which guide, inform, and sustain creativity and innovation; encouraging and supporting Team Learning; Personal Mastery of certain skills which enable an individual to learn and understand more and thus perform at a higher level of competence; and finally, Systems Thinking which establishes a holistic view, both of one's organization and of the marketplace in which it pursues success.
In his Introduction to this book, Denning asserts that "the best way to communicate with people you are trying to lead is very often through a story. The impulse here is practical and pedagogical. [The Leader's Guide to Storytelling] shows how to use storytelling to deal with the most difficult challenges faced by leadership today." Denning wholly agrees with Senge that a learning organization is an environment "where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning how to learn together." However, while agreeing on the importance of "systems thinking" as a way of looking at systems as a whole that will enable people to see complex chains of causation and so solve complex problems, Denning has three concerns which he shares on page 253. By the time his reader arrives at that point in the narrative, she or he may well share the same concerns.
My purpose in this brief commentary is to focus on what I consider to be Denning's key points as he explains why and how storytelling is often the best way for leaders to communicate with those whom they are trying to lead. What he offers is a cohesive and comprehensive system. These are the core principles, as discussed thoroughly in Chapters 3-10:
1. Select and then tell the story which is most appropriate for the given leadership challenge.
2. Tell that story with style, truth, thorough preparation, and effective delivery.
3. Select a narrative pattern based on the primary objective: to motivate others to action, to build trust in you, to build trust in your organization, to transmit your values, to get others working together, to share knowledge, to "tame the grapevine," or to create and share your vision.
Each reader will appreciate Table 1.1. (on page 18) which summarizes key points for each of the eight different narrative patterns discussed separately in Chapters, 3-10. (Additional Tables are provided later in the narrative whenever appropriate.) At the end of each chapter in Part Two, Denning thoughtfully includes a "Template" which poses a set of questions to be addressed when, for example, crafting a "springboard story." Here's the first of ten questions: "What is the specific change in the organization or community or group that you hope to spark with the story?" Then in Part Three (Chapters 11 and 12), Denning explains how to put it all together by using narrative effectively, both to transform an organization and to become an interactive leader.
Of special interest to me Denning's discussion (in the final chapter) of what he calls "Interactive, Tolstoyean" leadership and its relation to other theories in terms of leadership as a trait, as a skill, as a style, as situational, as motivation, and as transformation. This discussion serves as an appropriate conclusion to his book, one in which Denning has spelled out "specific, identifiable, measurable, trainable behaviors that can be used to achieve the goals of transformational leadership."
Storytelling really is a performance art. Some master the requisite skills. Most don't. Denning offers no guarantees but does claim that those who consistently use the narrative tools he has provided will acquire new capabilities. Specifically, to communicate more effectively who they are and what they stand for, to be more attentive to the world as it is now, to speak the truth and do it well, to make their values explicit and take actions which are consistent with those values, to listen to the world and be receptive to innovation. Those who possess these new capabilities will attract the interest, then earn and sustain the trust and respect of those whom they may be privileged to lead.
If this is the kind of leader you aspire to be, Denning's book awaits you...eager to be of substantial assistance.
For whatever reasons, only in recent years has there been an awareness and appreciation of the importance of the business narrative. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Annette Simmons' The Story Factor, Doug Lipman's Improving Your Storytelling, and Storytelling in Organizations co-authored by John Seely Brown, Denning, Katarina Groh, and Laurence Prusak.

The Hamster Revolution: How to Manage Your Email Before It Manages You (Bk Business) Review

The Hamster Revolution: How to Manage Your Email Before It Manages You (Bk Business)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The aim of this book is to reduce email volume, improve email quality, encourage sending email that is more actionable and organize folders using COTA (Clients, Output, Teams, Admin) approach. Although, some ideas of the book are arguable, the book makes you think once again about your way of emailing. Some readers may find COTA useful, but for me it is too complicated and counterproductive. You can do more in less time with a simpler scheme. I prefer the method advocated by David Allen in his book "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity": where the messages are divided by four categories: "next actions", "projects", "waiting for" and "someday/maybe".
I also disagree with the authors' advice to use instant messaging (IM) in addition to email. The authors did not get the major point of e-mail: you write your emails in the most convenient time for you, and the recipient reads them in the most convenient time for her. What the authors do not understand is that you cannot disturb somebody by sending an email in an inappropriate time. For example, the authors wrote that an email may be "...unnecessary interruption in a workday already filled with interruptions. .... You are working on an important project that requires a lot of concentration.... your masterpiece... and ding, an email comes in". The authors do not understand that is not the arrival that made you interrupt, but the counterproductive configuration of the email software that notifies you about the incoming messages. If you will disable the notifications, an incoming email will never break off your concentration again. You will read all the incoming messages in a proper time. The authors also forget about spam - a potential source for interruptions. IM is also the big source of interruptions, and not as efficient as the telephone.
"Turn off your email alarm" is advised by Julie Morgenstern, author of "Never Check E-Mail In the Morning", and by Gleb Arkhangelsky, author of "Time Drive". I highly recommend the two books above mentioned, as well as "Getting Things Done" by David Allen.
