I've been a long-time fan of the authors' website, the RatRaceRebellion, and when I had an opportunity to read their newest book, I jumped on it. I've read lots of "work at home" books, and they all said basically the same things. Durst's and Haaren's new book doesn't dwell on the same old things that are in the other books; instead, it jumps right to the heart of what all new home-based workers want to know - where to find work. Not only do the authors list a multitude of websites offering work-at-home opportunities, they've checked out every one of the websites, plus they've organized the listing into job types (they've included categories such as "merchandiser" and "notary" that are more "work FROM home). They've even included a category of websites for work in the "adult" industry (if you're so inclined)!
The authors have also done a great job showing readers how to do effective Google and Craigslist searches for work, and they tell what to look for in order to avoid scams.
All in all, this is a very well-written and extremely well-organized book about how to find a good home-based job and avoid all the scams out there. I highly recommend it!

Naughty Girls' Night In: Start Your Own Sex-Toy Party Business (You Know It's Not the '50s When You're Selling Your Girlfriends Lingerie and Sex Toys Instead of Plasticware)

****
This is a great introductory book about what an adult sex toy business for women involves. It is strictly for a woman who is interested in distributing sex toys via the party plan method in an extremely tasteful way (as opposed to a sleezy or crude way). It would not be helpful for men who wish to start this type of business, as the book is written strictly for women. It also would not be helpful to a woman who is interested in selling hard-core adult sex products in the ways men have traditionally sold such products to each other (via pornographic sites, adult book stores, etc.) This is for the "new way" of marketing sexual aids to women, via romance, self-empowerment, and selling "sexual fulfillment"---techniques that are unique to this business of woman-to-woman sales.
The book covers MLMs and already established party plans. It also covers starting your own business from scratch. It compares the different costs and benefits of each method of business.
The greatest value of this book is that it covers what it's really, really like to be in the adult sex toy business, things I'd never thought of, like customer returns, liability and local laws, product delivery and privacy, control of guests at parties (yes, they can get rowdy!), the hard work and commitment necessary to be successful, and more. It really opened my eyes, changing my idea of the adult sex toy business as something that seemed like a fun and funky idea to the harsh realities of operating such a business. It is not a discouraging book, just a realistic book. It helps you to evaluate if you are the type of person that would truly enjoy the day-to-day operations of "having a romance business" (a popular euphemism for this business) before you run out and spend several hundred to over a thousand dollars to buy a kit from a company.
It is written by the two women who started Lady Bliss, a popular adult sex toy party plan, and details the often humorous experiences they ran into. As you might imagine, it comes off as being a little biased towards joining a party plan versus starting your own party plan, but just a little; this is a little natural, since this is the author's business. The authors cover several other party plans as well as sharing their own experiences starting their own, so you definitely get enough information to make a good decision and get started in your own research, saving you lots of time and even more money.
This book is a fun read (as you can tell by the cover) even if you don't plan on ever starting a business, but are just curious. If you are thinking of starting a "romance business", you'd be wise to buy this book; I'm certain you won't be sorry.

ALL MOMS WORK does just what it's subtitle suggests: It offers short-term career strategies for long-rang success! And that's what any career-minded mother needs who decides to make raising her children her first priority. The book suggests ways to keep your resume fresh, earn money through part-time jobs, and/or study for a new career while being a parent. What I really liked was its nonjudgmental attitude and its realistic career strategies because, let's face it, most mothers will return to work when necessity or timing is right. Sharon Reed Abboud is obviously a mother who is a skilled career strategist and a knowledgeable friend.

The Basic Guide to Pricing Your Craftwork: With Profitable Strategies for Recordkeeping, Cutting Material Costs, Time & Workplace Management, Plus Tax Review

The Basic Guide to Pricing Your Craftwork: With Profitable Strategies for Recordkeeping, Cutting Material Costs, Time and Workplace Management, Plus Tax
Average Reviews:

Mr. Dillehay's advice is aimed squarely at handcrafters, which means he's able to recommend courses of action that might be contrary to more general advice. For example, while it's common in many stores to price just under a dollar amount ($.99 or $.95 amounts), you don't want to do that with most handcrafted items. That sort of price can actually leave people thinking your goods are cheap and low-quality. Similarly, talking up the uniqueness of your methods or materials and raising your prices might increase your sales, even though common wisdom says that if sales are slow you should lower your prices.
Many beginning crafters are reluctant to put a decent price on their goods. They feel that they or their products aren't good enough, or that people won't be willing to pay that kind of price. They look at the price tag on the materials they used and think they shouldn't mark things up much beyond that. The problem is, there are many costs associated with crafting work that aren't taken into account by that, and you could find yourself losing money without even realizing it. Dillehay makes certain that you know how to take all of those invisible expenses into account when pricing your goods.
He goes on to talk about pricing for different markets. You might be able to price higher at a craft fair than through a store, for example. He even discusses wholesale pricing that allows you to sell to stores, catalogs, and other outlets while still making a profit. In fact, pretty much the only subject that seems conspicuously absent is any talk of selling online whatsoever.
Because so many factors affect the price of your goods, this book ends up doubling as a mini-guide on running a craft business (although you'll still want to delve more thoroughly into that as its own topic). It includes a variety of forms for inventories and so on.
Despite the absence of information regarding online pricing, methods and sales---which these days seems like a bit of a large oversight---there's so much valuable information in here that I highly recommend it to any crafter who'd like to make a profit on her wares.

Your First Year in Network Marketing: Overcome Your Fears, Experience Success, and Achieve Your Dreams Review

Your First Year in Network Marketing: Overcome Your Fears, Experience Success, and Achieve Your Dreams
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been in network marketing for over ten years, failing miserably. I tried this company and that company. Wasn't going anywhere untill I bought this book and used it.
This book should be called "How To Become Brilliant on the basics" and subtitled "How To Unleash Your Potential in MLM." It sure did for me.
Before reading "Your First Year in Network Marketing", I thought I would be lucky to get 100 people on my list. After reading what Mark said, I easily came up with a list of over 2,000 and the bst part is that those 2,000 know 2,000 who know 2,000 who know 2,000 and so on. I think it is true that if you know three people, you know everybodyelse in the world.
The affirmations were great and got me thinking bigger. The scripts were a great start, although I have midified them since then.
Overall a great book by Mark. I wonder how many other failed network marketers would do well if only they read (and applied) this wisdom?

Work From Home Handbook: Flex Your Time, Improve Your Life (USA TODAY/Nolo Series) Review

Work From Home Handbook: Flex Your Time, Improve Your Life (USA TODAY/Nolo Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a timely book--very timely in that some of the statistical data and such will probably become dated before too long. The resources are good but even websites can come and go so anyone who is serious about working from home needs to hurry to get a copy before the information loses its immediate relevance.
With that said, there's more than enough good stuff here to almost justify the price. The book by arguing for the many reasons someone might want to work from home without glossing over the reality of it. Not everyone is able to work from home because some people simply prefer the interaction of others, want to get away from the house even if it means facing rush hour traffic, or simply have careers that are not conducive to working from home. And those who may sincerely want to do so are not necessarily equipped to do so in other ways--lacking the technology or maybe even the discipline to do so.
Being home all day with the kids may sound better than having to leave every morning for the office but when you have to be on a conference call you'll still need childcare.
This book does a good job of presenting the arguments both for and against working from home before addressing how to make it happen. No need to work out a way to approach your boss about working from home if after reading the first couple of chapters you realize that you can't (because your professional role won't allow it) or shouldn't (because you really don't have the right home or personal context to do so).
The book devotes one chapter to approaching your current employer with an argument for telecommuting before moving onto another chapter where finding a job that is telecommuting friendly is offered, including some warnings about work from home scams. The last few chapters are devoted to more practical advice regarding freelancing including an overview regarding how to file taxes along with suggested resources if you need more information.
This is a good book. Is it worth $19.99? No. At fewer than 200 pages you're paying too much for not enough information. The same websites are mentioned more than once between chapters if not within the same chapter. If you can spare a couple of hours, go to your local bookstore, buy a cup of coffee and read it while taking notes. It won't take you more than two hours to read this cover to cover and get a list of the resources you may want/need. Or borrow it from the library. But it is not worth the hefty price and that is a shame because it's not a bad book really just not very thorough.

Hillary DePiano's The Trading Assistant's Assistant is an eye-opener. I have heard of trading assistants, but did not fully understand what the job entailed. It makes sense that to keep selling on eBay there is only so much of your own clutter you can get rid of before you actually run out of things of your own to sell. This is where the author, Hilary DePiano shares her own experiences as a trading assistant and a PowerSeller. Someone who sells items for other people in many different ways for example can pass any revenue onto the owner for an agreed rate of commission.
We learn there arecertain conditions to consider in the user agreement, which apply to the rules of eBay. How to qualify as a trading assistant and what the benefits are once a link is added to your profile and how you are listed in the trading assistant directory. DePiano lists the pros and cons and explains how to change from the casual seller to one with professional standards. Then there is branding to think about, and who actually hires a trading assistant, gaining regular clients, who your ideal clients would be, how to reach potential customers and finally how a trading assistant actually makes money, whether that is actually selling on commission, charging fees, or using deposits to secure clients. If you don't understand who is accountable for which costs, shipping, eBay fees, reports, spreadsheets then this books explains all. The author also goes into how to make your own service stand out from the rest using client realism , and showing you the value of research, keywords, proper terms, conditions and policies.
Starting up as a business and the taxes involved is never easy, but Hillary DePiano is very helpful in these areas, and also explains about the technical side of things. The eBay accounting software, the benefits of pairing of Quickbooks and eBay are also mentioned. As are the benefits of Skype where you can make calls from your computer free to other people on Skype and cheap to phones and mobiles around the world. This removes the threat of supplying strangers with your own home phone number, a blessing for your privacy and safety - especially for women who live on their own. We take a lot of precautions to protect our computers and our identity when working online, real life should be no different at all. I enjoyed reading this book, and with all this new knowledge am tempted to start my own business, as will many other readers.
