Work at Home Now: The No-nonsense Guide to Finding Your Perfect Home-based Job, Avoiding Scams, and Making a Great Living

I've been a long-time fan of the authors' website, the RatRaceRebellion, and when I had an opportunity to read their newest book, I jumped on it. I've read lots of "work at home" books, and they all said basically the same things. Durst's and Haaren's new book doesn't dwell on the same old things that are in the other books; instead, it jumps right to the heart of what all new home-based workers want to know - where to find work. Not only do the authors list a multitude of websites offering work-at-home opportunities, they've checked out every one of the websites, plus they've organized the listing into job types (they've included categories such as "merchandiser" and "notary" that are more "work FROM home). They've even included a category of websites for work in the "adult" industry (if you're so inclined)!
The authors have also done a great job showing readers how to do effective Google and Craigslist searches for work, and they tell what to look for in order to avoid scams.
All in all, this is a very well-written and extremely well-organized book about how to find a good home-based job and avoid all the scams out there. I highly recommend it!

Weekend Entrepreneur: 101 Great Ways to Earn Extra Cash Review

Weekend Entrepreneur: 101 Great Ways to Earn Extra Cash

This book lives up to its title. It's a nice introduction to the topic of part-time (weekend) and home-based entrepreneurship, and should be a very helpful guide to anyone who is just starting out and simply needs an easy read with lots of ideas and some business basics. If that's what you're looking for, this book delivers.
As a serial entrepreneur who has started several ventures, both small and large, I really admire individuals who don't have a lot of time on their hands yet are motivated to take the first steps towards some extra cash -- and even the possibility of financial independence. It takes courage, especially for those with a full-time job and family obligations.
This book introduces the concept of part-time entrepreneurship, provides lots of part-time and home-based business ideas, and also some advice about marketing, etc. In some ways, the most valuable part of this book are the ideas that it presents (a page or two dedicated to each concept). Most of the ideas are within the reach of an entrepreneur who doesn't have a lot of start-up capital, and all are achieveable to varying degrees depending on how much time one can dedicate to them. Also, I really like the fact that this book takes the family into consideration and even discusses how to get the kids involved. For a mother or father trying to make a go of an entrepreneurial business after work or on the weekends, involving the kids can make all the difference in the world. It's nice to see this aspect of home-based entrepreneurship addressed.
The bottom line is that this book is for people who are just starting out and interested in a part-time, home-based business. It provides lots of ideas. If you use one of their ideas, great. And if not, it's still likely that the ideas presented in this books could inspire you and lead you to your own business concept. After you launch your business there are many other resources that will be helpful to you, but the key is to get going, and on that front this book is a good place to start.

Born to Organize: Everything You Need to Know About a Career As a Professional Organizer Review

Born to Organize: Everything You Need to Know About a Career As a Professional Organizer

I have purchased and read 15 "Organizing" books from Amazon.com in the past 3 months. I can tell you for certain there is no book as helpful for starting your Professional Organizing career as this one! I have been organizing for friends and family all my adult life (yes, only for the FUN of it), until 3 months ago when someone suggested I look into doing it as a career. At first I laughed since I had never heard of that job title before. I did some quick research one night-- and boy was I way off. Not only has the industry doubled in popularity in recent years, but the profession is very well paying, very diverse in specialities, and allows many opportunities for growth and education (especially when paired with the association NAPO).
One of the first book titles that fell into my hands was Sara's. This is now almost my daily reference guide! With her helpful pro-con advice I was able to make an educated decison about launching my career in this field. I have taken all of her advice, especially about not underpricing myself, and only 2 months into taking paying clients I have had 9 clients, 3 of which have and/or are currently doing thier WHOLE house AND storage units with me! I average about $1000-1500 per individual contract now. Did I mention I have hardly had to advertise yet? Sara's referral system is incredibly lucrative, and I am highly confident when things slow down her solid marketing techniques will keep me afloat. She is so creative, clear, and organized in her text that it gets me pumped up everytime I crack the pages. I learned something new and profound for my business on every page. NO LIE! I especially appreciated her 8 week start up plan, and her many resource lists (I think I've used them all by now). What more do I need to say? If you are new in this business and aren't going to buy this book-- well then you will simply be missing out on TONS of education, TONS of clients (and tons of money), and I will be perfectly happy to have your business!:) Thank you Sara for writing such a fantastic HOW TO manual for this bizz with terrific insight for the new PO's!
Great Thanks from "Clutter Free Kimberly" in Fairfax, VA

Work From Home Handbook: Flex Your Time, Improve Your Life (USA TODAY/Nolo Series) Review

Work From Home Handbook: Flex Your Time, Improve Your Life (USA TODAY/Nolo Series)

This is a timely book--very timely in that some of the statistical data and such will probably become dated before too long. The resources are good but even websites can come and go so anyone who is serious about working from home needs to hurry to get a copy before the information loses its immediate relevance.
With that said, there's more than enough good stuff here to almost justify the price. The book by arguing for the many reasons someone might want to work from home without glossing over the reality of it. Not everyone is able to work from home because some people simply prefer the interaction of others, want to get away from the house even if it means facing rush hour traffic, or simply have careers that are not conducive to working from home. And those who may sincerely want to do so are not necessarily equipped to do so in other ways--lacking the technology or maybe even the discipline to do so.
Being home all day with the kids may sound better than having to leave every morning for the office but when you have to be on a conference call you'll still need childcare.
This book does a good job of presenting the arguments both for and against working from home before addressing how to make it happen. No need to work out a way to approach your boss about working from home if after reading the first couple of chapters you realize that you can't (because your professional role won't allow it) or shouldn't (because you really don't have the right home or personal context to do so).
The book devotes one chapter to approaching your current employer with an argument for telecommuting before moving onto another chapter where finding a job that is telecommuting friendly is offered, including some warnings about work from home scams. The last few chapters are devoted to more practical advice regarding freelancing including an overview regarding how to file taxes along with suggested resources if you need more information.
This is a good book. Is it worth $19.99? No. At fewer than 200 pages you're paying too much for not enough information. The same websites are mentioned more than once between chapters if not within the same chapter. If you can spare a couple of hours, go to your local bookstore, buy a cup of coffee and read it while taking notes. It won't take you more than two hours to read this cover to cover and get a list of the resources you may want/need. Or borrow it from the library. But it is not worth the hefty price and that is a shame because it's not a bad book really just not very thorough.
