How often have you been to an interview only to find that it is a training session for an interview? Probably more times than you wish to recall ... or actually realised! The `interviewing game' is highly important and Dr Rob Yeung comes to the rescue of the inexperienced with helpful suggestions on the many proven techniques which leading organisations now use to find the right candidates, and spot what is going on...on both sides.
INTERVIEWS: WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH!
Characteristics of the good interviewer/interviewee attract a great deal of rubbish comment in the press, and in books, so it is refreshing to find Yeung's treatment of what is a painful experience for most people.
Finding the right person and ensuring that the right buttons have been pressed is as difficult as anything one can do in working life. I had always thought `getting that job' was about luck. Wrong! Yeung's view is that it's about preparation, and his final words cover `The 10 commandments' at the conclusion of the book which candidates should note and memorise carefully.
There are 14 chapters covering the following issues:
*why learn to interview properly?
*structuring the interview
*developing your questioning skills
*avoiding poor questions
*honing your listening skills
*preparing to interview
*opening the interview
*competencies and example interview questions
*discussing money
*wrapping up the interview
*rating candidates and making a decision
*evaluating and improving the interview process
*creating useful interview documents
*final words
THE FUNNELLING AND STARS TECHNIQUES
Most people reading this review, which is designed primarily for my law trainees as a forensic technique, will recall their examinations and the techniques used to revise for law exams. "Funnelling" on page 26 is an excellent device and complimented by Yeung's STARS acronym for the employer covering: situation, task, actions, result, summarise.
The importance of STARS is two way. As an interviewee you want it to be a two-way interview otherwise how are you going to work with these people! As an interviewer, you must structure what you want to ask.
It's not quite like a cross-examination where I will develop points which arise from answers given, but I will have thoroughly prepared my questions in advance in the areas where there are issues between the parties but I have to be flexible if the evidence given does not `come up to proof' as we put it.
But you have to `come up to proof' in the interview thus avoiding poor questions (and poorly prepared questions) which are common errors.YOU CAN ALWAYS DO BETTER
I came away from Dr Yeung's work glad to have read something which confirmed my best and worst thoughts about technique. He is right to say that interviewing is a skill, but it is also one which can be meticulously learnt with proper preparation and care which Dr Yeung sets out in a most useful format here.
The step-by-step guide is a splendid collaboration with `the Sunday Times' but remember that whichever side of the desk you sit on, you can always do better and Rob Yeung gives you the best current and contemporary analysis of how to interview and recruit in the internet age of employment finding, and his advice should be followed.

Work at Home Now: The No-nonsense Guide to Finding Your Perfect Home-based Job, Avoiding Scams, and Making a Great Living

I've been a long-time fan of the authors' website, the RatRaceRebellion, and when I had an opportunity to read their newest book, I jumped on it. I've read lots of "work at home" books, and they all said basically the same things. Durst's and Haaren's new book doesn't dwell on the same old things that are in the other books; instead, it jumps right to the heart of what all new home-based workers want to know - where to find work. Not only do the authors list a multitude of websites offering work-at-home opportunities, they've checked out every one of the websites, plus they've organized the listing into job types (they've included categories such as "merchandiser" and "notary" that are more "work FROM home). They've even included a category of websites for work in the "adult" industry (if you're so inclined)!
The authors have also done a great job showing readers how to do effective Google and Craigslist searches for work, and they tell what to look for in order to avoid scams.
All in all, this is a very well-written and extremely well-organized book about how to find a good home-based job and avoid all the scams out there. I highly recommend it!

ALL MOMS WORK does just what it's subtitle suggests: It offers short-term career strategies for long-rang success! And that's what any career-minded mother needs who decides to make raising her children her first priority. The book suggests ways to keep your resume fresh, earn money through part-time jobs, and/or study for a new career while being a parent. What I really liked was its nonjudgmental attitude and its realistic career strategies because, let's face it, most mothers will return to work when necessity or timing is right. Sharon Reed Abboud is obviously a mother who is a skilled career strategist and a knowledgeable friend.

Get the Interview Every Time: Fortune 500 Hiring Professionals' Tips for Writing Winning Resumes and Cover Letters Review

Get the Interview Every Time: Fortune 500 Hiring Professionals' Tips for Writing Winning Resumes and Cover Letters
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fortune 500 HR executives do in fact give tips for resumes and cover letters in this book. But if they possess the magic key to getting an interview, they don't share it. Readers won't get the interview everytime because the advice is tired and common: list your experiences and education on your resume; attach a cover letter. Basic online job hunting tips have been layered on top to make the advice seem fresh. It's not. And if it worked, there wouldn't be any need for newer strategies such as the "accomplishment" strategy (at least you prove that you were useful to a business) and the "self-marketing" strategy (much more aligned with a business's needs). As an employer, I want to know what a candidate will do to bring profit to my business and peace of mind to me. It's that simple. I don't want to infer or guess. And, contrary to what this book implies, I am more receptive to candidates who show initiative and creativity.

I absolutely loved this book and found it so instructive on really complicated statistical principals related to the hiring process. Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now Is The Time To Do What You Love is a practical guide for those who are looking to make a career change. Whether you are just starting to explore options or you are further along and want to ensure you haven`t forgotten anything in the decision making process, this book is very helpful. It provides insight into new careers and considerations for going back to school including online learning as an option. As a woman in my mid 40`s with more than 20 years experience in Staffing and Recruitment, I knew that I was burnt out and yet wanted to continue to help people. A number of people suggested I get into Coaching. Although my mind was already churning, this book was the catalyst for positive change in my life. You`re not going to get what you want by complaining about it. You need to take the steps to get you there and Nancy Whitney-Reiter can do that in just 233 pages. Just 6 months later I am now doing what I love which is Coaching people through positive change. I now have a lifestyle, not a workstyle. My core values are aligned. I share similar views as the Author and in fact believe in this book so much so that I have purchased copies for family members and clients. It is also listed as recommended reading on my blog. As the back cover says what are you waiting for!

101 Best Ways to Land a Job in Troubled Times

I bought two of these for Christmas gifts for two daughters - one right out of law school, the other looking to change jobs. Both were challenged by having to start with their values and belief systems (not anything the school career placement offices ever had them do!) But it works. They are more focused, optimistic and are equipped with resumes and and an action plan that make them stand out in the crowd. So far one has gotten that new job and the other is still looking. But the emotional roller coaster has been tamed and they are both better women for the insight they gained into themselves. Pass it on to other parents trying to help kids make a start in this crazy economy!

The book was very insightful. It takes a fresh look at some key financial aspects of job loss. I appreciate the importance of advance planning before termination. The author has some good ideas about reviewing investments and cost cutting.
The narrative is a journey of self discovery that can be a blueprint for many of us. There is also a great set of travel tips to boot. This is a fun read.
