The Basic Guide to Pricing Your Craftwork: With Profitable Strategies for Recordkeeping, Cutting Material Costs, Time and Workplace Management, Plus Tax

Mr. Dillehay's advice is aimed squarely at handcrafters, which means he's able to recommend courses of action that might be contrary to more general advice. For example, while it's common in many stores to price just under a dollar amount ($.99 or $.95 amounts), you don't want to do that with most handcrafted items. That sort of price can actually leave people thinking your goods are cheap and low-quality. Similarly, talking up the uniqueness of your methods or materials and raising your prices might increase your sales, even though common wisdom says that if sales are slow you should lower your prices.
Many beginning crafters are reluctant to put a decent price on their goods. They feel that they or their products aren't good enough, or that people won't be willing to pay that kind of price. They look at the price tag on the materials they used and think they shouldn't mark things up much beyond that. The problem is, there are many costs associated with crafting work that aren't taken into account by that, and you could find yourself losing money without even realizing it. Dillehay makes certain that you know how to take all of those invisible expenses into account when pricing your goods.
He goes on to talk about pricing for different markets. You might be able to price higher at a craft fair than through a store, for example. He even discusses wholesale pricing that allows you to sell to stores, catalogs, and other outlets while still making a profit. In fact, pretty much the only subject that seems conspicuously absent is any talk of selling online whatsoever.
Because so many factors affect the price of your goods, this book ends up doubling as a mini-guide on running a craft business (although you'll still want to delve more thoroughly into that as its own topic). It includes a variety of forms for inventories and so on.
Despite the absence of information regarding online pricing, methods and sales---which these days seems like a bit of a large oversight---there's so much valuable information in here that I highly recommend it to any crafter who'd like to make a profit on her wares.

Business & Corporate Aviation Management : On Demand Air Travel Review

Business and Corporate Aviation Management : On Demand Air Travel

I had recently moved into the position of Aviation Manager/Chief Pilot of a mid-size, midwestern corporate flight department when I purchased this book. I was looking for a one stop shop to cover the basics of corporate aviation and a resource for studying for the NBAA's Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) Exam.
Though I had a solid foundation as a corporate pilot for 15 years, I was very impressed at the content of this book. This book covered very well the administration and operations side of a flight department as well as the technical and facilities side. Also included were great chapters on personnel and leadership components of managing a flight department. Though I did study other sources as well, I credit Business and Corporate Aviation and Management by John J. Sheehan as the primary reason I passed the CAM exam on the first try.
This book brings many resources together. As I went through this book, I developed a checklist of things I needed to get working on in my department.
Business and Corporate Aviation and Management was surprisingly easy and enjoyable reading, though a little larger print would have been appreciated.
All in all, this is an outstanding resource for anyone in corporate or business aviation including charter. And if you aspire to manage a flight department or take the CAM Exam, it's a must read and a must keep on your shelf.

There are so many things that come with owning a new home. Sometimes you might not know which questions to ask until you have a problem on your hands. This book walks new homeowners through house maintenance, insurance, taxes, and fix-it jobs with easy to understand instructions and illustrations. We bought this book for my sister-in-law for her first home, but liked it so much we turned around and bought another copy for ourselves. We have been in our home two years and are still learning things like pouring bleach down the tubes of your AC/Furnace. It keeps the pipes from clogging and causing thousands of dollars of damage to your home (we know that NOW). So anyway...if you or someone you know is a new homeowner, get this!!!

I found this to be a useful and practical resource... a "must read" for the savvy marketing professional.

How long does it take to buy a loaf of bread? A pair of shoes? A car? These are trick questions. Imagine a hundred potential customers in the same store, each holding a stopwatch. Some of their stopwatches are ticking very fast (grabbing a bottle of wine before a party), some glacially slow (agonizing over the perfect bottle for a first date). Some, in fact, aren't ticking at all. For today's savvy marketers understanding how much time and energy consumers are willing to spend shopping for their product or service is the single most important (yet overlooked) factor in maximizing sales. After years of advising clients who sell everything from all-natural fruit juice to health insurance, John Rosen and AnnaMaria Turano have learned that capturing a consumer's attention at precisely the right time and holding it through the purchase decision requires a strategy that they call Stopwatch Marketing. It is the method of adjusting your marketing strategies to match the shopping styles of your customers. Stopwatch Marketing unveils a systematic way to capitalize on four different types of shopping styles—Recreational, Painstaking, Impatient, and Reluctant. Rosen and Turano also share the stories of how America's top brands put the concept of Stopwatch Marketing to work for them. You'll learn how: • Goodyear turned Assurance with TripleTred tires into a billion-dollar success story built on a shopping cycle that takes less than an hour. • Roto-Rooter became the only legitimate brand in its category by controlling the typical Yellow Pages users' 50-second search pattern. • Whole Foods reinvented the supermarket shopping experience to slow down their customers' clocks. • Microsoft exploits shoppers' reluctance to spend time researching alternatives to their Office software. • Lexus begins targeting customers up to a year before they set foot inside a dealer showroom. In a world where consumers are assaulted with thousands of different marketing messages every day, the biggest challenge is to align the content and timing of your messages to the amount of time buyers have for hearing them. Stopwatch Marketing shows how to do just that and increase your bottom line as a result.

I purchased this book over Thanksgiving and just now got around to reading it. WOW! I wish I had done it sooner! I agree with all of the previous comments. This book is a quick read with much to offer the new crafter in the way of marketing and getting organized.
Taking advantage of the internet is a must for anyone in business these days and Craft Inc. has some wonderful gems to offer in that regard which I am putting to use as I write this. The information is laid out in a non-intimidating way that lets you decide which methods are going to be best for you.
I am inspired by the interviews with successful crafters of various mediums and how they got their start!
If you are thinking about taking your hobby to the next level, this is a good place to begin your journey and you will not be sorry you purchased this book.
Cheers!

Work From Home Handbook: Flex Your Time, Improve Your Life (USA TODAY/Nolo Series) Review

Work From Home Handbook: Flex Your Time, Improve Your Life (USA TODAY/Nolo Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a timely book--very timely in that some of the statistical data and such will probably become dated before too long. The resources are good but even websites can come and go so anyone who is serious about working from home needs to hurry to get a copy before the information loses its immediate relevance.
With that said, there's more than enough good stuff here to almost justify the price. The book by arguing for the many reasons someone might want to work from home without glossing over the reality of it. Not everyone is able to work from home because some people simply prefer the interaction of others, want to get away from the house even if it means facing rush hour traffic, or simply have careers that are not conducive to working from home. And those who may sincerely want to do so are not necessarily equipped to do so in other ways--lacking the technology or maybe even the discipline to do so.
Being home all day with the kids may sound better than having to leave every morning for the office but when you have to be on a conference call you'll still need childcare.
This book does a good job of presenting the arguments both for and against working from home before addressing how to make it happen. No need to work out a way to approach your boss about working from home if after reading the first couple of chapters you realize that you can't (because your professional role won't allow it) or shouldn't (because you really don't have the right home or personal context to do so).
The book devotes one chapter to approaching your current employer with an argument for telecommuting before moving onto another chapter where finding a job that is telecommuting friendly is offered, including some warnings about work from home scams. The last few chapters are devoted to more practical advice regarding freelancing including an overview regarding how to file taxes along with suggested resources if you need more information.
This is a good book. Is it worth $19.99? No. At fewer than 200 pages you're paying too much for not enough information. The same websites are mentioned more than once between chapters if not within the same chapter. If you can spare a couple of hours, go to your local bookstore, buy a cup of coffee and read it while taking notes. It won't take you more than two hours to read this cover to cover and get a list of the resources you may want/need. Or borrow it from the library. But it is not worth the hefty price and that is a shame because it's not a bad book really just not very thorough.

Unfinished Business - The Life and Times of Danny Gatton (Book) Review

Unfinished Business - The Life and Times of Danny Gatton (Book)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally! The long awaited biography of Danny Gatton by Ralph
Heibutzki has arrived. The best biographies provide insight
into the character, motives, and personality of their subject.
Who was Danny Gatton? In answering this question, Heibutzki
has done an admirable job. Through many, many interviews from
all the people who were part of Danny Gatton's life; family and
friends, I know so much more about this brilliant musician
who Steve Vai (no slouch guitarist himself!) describes on the
cover jacket, "...Danny Gatton comes closer to anyone else to
being the best guitar player to ever live."
What drove Gatton to suicide? How did he view himself as a
musician? Why was he at once once blase about fame and at
the same time so driven to acquire it? At one point, he
forgot to call John Fogerty back to join his band, but was
clearly very excited to be signed to Elektra Records.
He craved the notoriety and money that came with stardom,
but would rather play small clubs close to home and
work on customizing vintage cars.
Why wasn't he more famous? Wasn't he arguably the best?
Maybe it was precisely because of his extraordinary skill
level. Can it be that he could only be appreciated by other
musicians or guitarists? Many people (non musicians) I play
his music for elicit a "ho hum" reaction, while my mind is
reeling with his stunning technique and musicianship. Who
knows? As someone who knew him observed, "he never threw
away a note".
Those issues, and more, are addressed in this biography,
and I feel after reading it that I know Danny Gatton, the
person, a bit more. Good job Ralph!
