If you aren't really fed up with the clutter in your house, or aren't really tired of buying things over and over again because you've lost the item 2 or 3 times in your own house, or don't mind being late to everything. Then don't buy this book. I got fed up. And the book worked a life changing miracle for me. However, I was so pleased with the changes, I told my mom to read it. Because, I just knew it would just make her life so much better. But organizing her home isn't a priority for her. So therefore she read it and it didn't appeal to her one bit. So if you say, "I want an organized home, but I want it to take 15 minutes." Then this book is no good for you. And you must go on with the way things are. If you say, "I have had it, I am ready to light a match to my house and just start over." Then quick read this book.I actually enjoyed the process of organizing my home. And now when I go into ANY room or closet, I just want to sit and stare at all the neatly deliberatly placed items. Everything has a home. Picking up in the evenings takes no time at all and with absolutely no effort. Before I read this book, I never wanted to go in my bedroom. It was impossible to rest in that room, because the piles of clutter was so overwhelming. Now I can finally use the bedroom for what it was intended: rest and relaxation.

Making Time Work For You Review

Making Time Work For You

I have read over a dozen books on time management. This book clearly stands out. When I first read it I could not believe how well its insights and suggestions resonated with my feelings and experience. It's a shame that when so many worthless books are selling in big quantities this book has to be special ordered. The section on "time policy" alone is worth the price of the book. If I were to get one book on time management this would be it.

Born to Organize: Everything You Need to Know About a Career As a Professional Organizer

I have purchased and read 15 "Organizing" books from Amazon.com in the past 3 months. I can tell you for certain there is no book as helpful for starting your Professional Organizing career as this one! I have been organizing for friends and family all my adult life (yes, only for the FUN of it), until 3 months ago when someone suggested I look into doing it as a career. At first I laughed since I had never heard of that job title before. I did some quick research one night-- and boy was I way off. Not only has the industry doubled in popularity in recent years, but the profession is very well paying, very diverse in specialities, and allows many opportunities for growth and education (especially when paired with the association NAPO).
One of the first book titles that fell into my hands was Sara's. This is now almost my daily reference guide! With her helpful pro-con advice I was able to make an educated decison about launching my career in this field. I have taken all of her advice, especially about not underpricing myself, and only 2 months into taking paying clients I have had 9 clients, 3 of which have and/or are currently doing thier WHOLE house AND storage units with me! I average about $1000-1500 per individual contract now. Did I mention I have hardly had to advertise yet? Sara's referral system is incredibly lucrative, and I am highly confident when things slow down her solid marketing techniques will keep me afloat. She is so creative, clear, and organized in her text that it gets me pumped up everytime I crack the pages. I learned something new and profound for my business on every page. NO LIE! I especially appreciated her 8 week start up plan, and her many resource lists (I think I've used them all by now). What more do I need to say? If you are new in this business and aren't going to buy this book-- well then you will simply be missing out on TONS of education, TONS of clients (and tons of money), and I will be perfectly happy to have your business!:) Thank you Sara for writing such a fantastic HOW TO manual for this bizz with terrific insight for the new PO's!
Great Thanks from "Clutter Free Kimberly" in Fairfax, VA

Organizing Your Day: Time Management Techniques That Will Work for You Review

Organizing Your Day: Time Management Techniques That Will Work for You
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did not find this book very useful, however I acknowledge that I am absolutely not the target market for the book.
I pre-ordered it before release, so I wasn't able to check it out in a store first. I should have researched the authors, as this would have indicated it was aimed at the same market as [...] and [...]. I assumed from the blurb that it covered techniques for balancing work projects and fighting procrastination, but on reading it is clear the book is aimed more at a domestic manager (aka mom) who is trying to manage a large variety of day to day domestic, personal and family tasks, but failing to do so though a lack of basic skills and/or an internet addiction.
For example, the chapter entitled Daily Scheduling: Move Smoothly Through the Day is about very basic domestic self-care. The morning routine (p. 172) is:
Wake up: at a set time
Jump up: actually get out of bed
Make up: make the bed
Eat up: have breakfast
Wash up: have a bath or shower
Brush up: clean your teeth
Dress up: dress with care from head to toe, including shoes, and makeup for women
Look up: turn your heart upwards to God
Clean up: pick up clutter and care for breakfast dishes
and the evening routine (p. 172-73) is
Eat up: have a meal planned ahead so all ingredients are on hand
Clean up: get the whole family to help clean up the kitchen
Straighten up: Set a timer and have the family help strighten the house for ten minutes
Start up: Do a to-do list for tomorrow.
As well, there are a suggested five daily duties, including tasks such as emptying the dishwasher, washing drying and folding a load of clothes, putting on makeup, reading the bible, making an inspiration point (one place in the house that is kept beautiful and sparkling at all times) and planning weekly meals (p.174-75).
These domestic tasks are the only contents of this chapter on daily scheduling, and this was the biggest let down in the book.
I guess because of this home-based target market, I found many of the case studies to be teeth-achingly cutsey. These include;
Kim, who can't invite new boyfriend Randolf over because the house is too cluttered.
Linda, who wants to manage her time to achieve her perfect life. To her this means having 30 mins a day to play with her son, to "spend more time with her mom, soaking up her wisdom", "go shopping for frivolous things", and talk about social things with her friends.
Bev, who is so busy running errands for her family she has no time to plan her family reunion.
Terrie, a volunteer at a religious retreat, who doesn't make a to-do list and so is derailed by things that pop up.
Eileen, who forgot to pick her father-in-law up from the airport because she didn't write it in her diary.
Alan, who missed the departure of his family holiday cruise through chronic lateness.
The book is designed to help people who have little or no skills in time management. There are practical techniques in the book that are transferable to the paid workplace. The book's main message is to have a to-do list, keep a current diary/calendar, monitor where your time goes, prioritize jobs, challenge perfectionism, and be prepared to say no to people. These are all good tips. They discuss the Pareto Principle, Stephen Covey's priority quadrant method, and David Allen's Getting Things Done method. If you are having VERY basic time management problems then the book would be very useful. It may suit someone who was starting their first job out of college.
My specific challenge is juggling multiple work projects simultaneously. I'm a single mom, working full time, caring for older family members, finishing my PhD, with a part-time job as well. I can schedule personal, family, and short/medium term work commitments perfectly, and anything to which I have to liaise with or report to someone else. However I am having trouble working on long term projects (specifically writing articles for publication), because although these are absolutely essential to my career, they are projects with a distant deadline, no-one else will be affected by my failure to complete them, and they have no immediate pay-off: therefore I schedule in everything else first. I was looking for a way to approach my daily organization that would help me pick away at some of these longer-term projects. This book did not help: I did not need a book to tell me to brush my teeth every morning. However, it's clearly not aimed at me.
As an alternative suggestion, I did find 'The War of Art' by Steven Pressfield very helpful, and I recommend this if you have mastered basic time management and are looking to commit larger blocks of time to your life's purpose, but being derailed by important tasks (but not ones that will add as much to achieving your long-term goals).

Organize Your Personal Finances In No Time Review

If you need to simplify how you handle your finances and paperwork, this is
the book for you.
Even if you are organized in this area, this book will motivate you to
simplify even more. It did for me.
As a Professional Organizer, one of the biggest downfalls I see to any money
management system is making it overcomplicated--e.g., waiting to organize
your finances because first you need to learn the computer program you plan
to use.
Next, is the indecision most people face when they are trying to get
organized. This is commonly seen in how to name files and how to store files
(covered simply in the book!).
Stanley provides practical, to the point direction in how to decide what is
just right for you, so that your systems will actually support you and not
work against you by being overcomplicated.
This book takes you through the decision making processes involved in
setting up the systems you'll need.
This is the first book on organizing finances that I have seen that is as
interested in you the person, as a seasoned Professional Organizer would be.
She makes it so easy to decide what you need to do next, based on you. It
was as close to having a live Professional Organizer there with me while I
was reading.
Be sure to check out the cool icons that guide you to quick tips and hints,
such as "Clever Client" and "Organized Enough" (hooray that an organizing
book is finally addressing the concept of not over-organizing).

Organizing for the Creative Person: Right-Brain Styles for Conquering Clutter, Mastering Time, and Reaching Your Goals

Dorothy Lehmkuhl and Dolores Lamping have provided a unique look at issues related to getting organized. When the words "get organized" are uttered, at least half of the American population shudders. There is no early education provided for those not blessed with the organizing gene. These people live their lives seeing being organized as magical. They live with shame, guilt, anger, defensiveness, and sadness. I know that this is the case because I teach them about organizing in Denver, Colorado. My classes have been the site of tears and shouting over the frustration of the inability to create organization. I share this with you because the book, ORGANIZING FOR THE CREATIVE PERSON, is the antidote for the frustration. I recommend it to every group when I speak. It provides such a unique interpretation to the word organized.
Creative people are visual and see this process of being organized in many different ways. They see it as limiting, as impossible, as an intrusion, as difficult to accomplish. They, too, yearn for time saved, relief from anxiety, and a way to increase their creativity and productivity. The analysis and understanding in this book of these issues act as permission to the creative to both get organized and to do it in ways which work for them. These are not conventional systems. Filled with tips about alternative ways to organize, solutions abound. This wonderful book can change lives.
In addition, ORGANIZING FOR THE CREATIVE PERSON has been chosen for study by the National Association of Professional Organizers as a text from which the national certification examination has been written. It has value, not only to those persons struggling to become organized in new ways, but also to the professionals in the industry of professional organizing, assisting them with deeper understanding of their clients. Whatever you interest in organizing, this is a must read. Sincerely, Mary Lou Lundberg, better known as Bunky, Former Chair, National Certification Process Committee, National Association of Professional Organizers and Owner, CHAOS CANCELLED, Denver, CO

How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life (Signet) Review

How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life (Signet)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life is, perhaps, the best book on time management ever written. It does not waste your time but gets right to the point. You must establish SMART (specific, measurable, achieveable, related/relevant, and time framed) goals for yourself and then prioritize them using Lakein's A/C system. "A" goals are the most important to you and you must plan on spending 80% of your time to achieve them. "C" goals (TV, lawn care, shopping, etc.) are the place where most people "waste" their lives and spend 80% of their time. This ratio must be reversed, according to Lakein.
He would agree with e.e. cummings that "To be nobody but yourself in a world that is night and day trying to make you just like everybody else means to fight the hardest fight any human being can fight, and never stop fighting." Once we have set goals that utilize our unique talents and abilities, we will have the will power and determination to do the work necessary to achieve them.
To accomplish our goals Lakein recommends that we make a daily "to do" list and always start with "A's," not "C's." Most of our time is spent working harder on things that don't matter. We may be efficient, but Lakein suggests that our goal is to do what matters most and become effective. "Work smarter, not harder" is the mantra he wants us to repeat and couple that saying with his last piece of advice --"Do it now."
Stick your finger into this small book and any page you hit will have wise words to put into action. Learning comes from daily practice and developing habits that "put first things first," taken from Stephen Covey's best seller, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People -- also recommended is Covey's fine book on effective living appropriately titled First Things First.
Rarely has a book that costs so little paid such rich dividends. You won't be disappointed.

Organize Your Family's Schedule In No Time Review

Organize Your Family's Schedule In No Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Organize Your Family's Schedule In No Time (In No Time) by Valentina Sgro is an unusual 'organize your life' guide, as it helps you organize your life by showing the many options you have to make day-to-day living more productive and a little less stressful. Sgro says "You're welcome to read this book from cover to cover...but what we really want you to do is to use this book to improve your family's life." She suggests that you read the sections that apply to your family circumstances before making any decisions on your next move. I found "Dealing with the Necessities of Life", particularly helpful. It shows how becoming more efficient can result in adding hours of quality time to your family's life. Moms (and dads) with preschool children with will welcome "Managing the Preschool Years", some of the author's idea are so unique, your youngsters will look forward to doing their chores. The sidebar notes, cautions and tips in this book contain useful information and are to the point. Ms. Sgro shows you how to make a schedule/calendar that will work for every member of the house. You will find diagrams, various calendars, suggested products along with the cost and website.
What I really like about author is that she suggests that you consider your family members' body clocks and personalities when creating schedules.
Recommended.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Time (3rd Edition)

I just finished the 3rd edition of MYT, and was quite impressed. I haven't seen the first two editions, but this one certainly fills the bill, if you're looking for solutions to time-pressure problems. That the book is funny, is a real bonus. It makes it easier to get through every chapter. I found the section found "Thinking Your Way Out of Timetraps" to be the best part of the book. After all, much of what we face on a daily basis is self-induced. You can blame your boss, you can blame other people, but when you really get honest with yourself, as you learn in the book, most of the time pressure you feel is a result of your own activities and beliefs. Do yourself a favor and get this book.

Take Back Your Time: How to Regain Control of Work, Information, and Technology
Average Reviews:

This is a terrific synthesis of the best time-management literature and Ms. Jasper's substantial practical experience working one-on-one with clients. What sets the book apart from others in the field is its emphasis on usefulness. Jasper outlines what works, and what does not work, and explains why. After reading her book, I felt like I was able to make my own, informed decisions about managing my time, papers, and belongings. Also, because Jasper isn't selling a line of time-management products her recommendations and insights are not colored by any hidden agenda. The book is well researched, well organized, and well written, and includes a substantial bibliography and a useable index. If you are looking for the one time-management book to buy, for home or office, this is the one.

Time Management for the Creative Person: Right-Brain Strategies for Stopping Procrastination, Getting Control of the Clock and Calendar, and Freeing Up Your Time and Your Life Review

Time Management for the Creative Person: Right-Brain Strategies for Stopping Procrastination, Getting Control of the Clock and Calendar, and Freeing Up Your Time and Your Life
Average Reviews:

I expected this book to provide innovative, useful information; after all, I'm a creative professional, always have a million projects going on at the same time, and really could use some help. Unfortunately, instead of original advice targeted to people in creative fields, this book is geared to harried housewives and disorganzied hobbyists. It is crammed full of platitudes, cliches, anecdotes about quasi-celebrities ("As a stand-up comic, Gary Shandling enterains audiences by poking fun at himself..."), quizzes (Are you right-brained or left-brained?), quotations, items ripped directly from press releases ("According to a survey by Select Comfort ...") and bulleted lists of hints (focused primarily on housekeeping and automobile maintenance) including:
* Stop to smell the flowers (yes, he actually says this)
* Brush your dog or cat while watching your favorite TV show
* Choose plants that are easy to grow
* Make enough for two meals when you cook and freeze the second meal
* Use paper plates and cups
* Hire a cleaning service
* Get more sleep
Probably the worst piece of advice this book offers, though, is "the future will take care of itself." No, it won't, especially if a deadline is looming and the rent check is due! If you work in a creative field and are looking for advice about enhancing your creativity and/or better managing your time and projects, skip this book. It is a complete waste of time and money.

Creative folks often know all too well that the muse doesn't always strike when you want it to, or when the deadline for your next brilliant project is creeping up on you like an ill-fitting turtleneck. Originality doesn't follow a time clock, even when you have to. While conventional time management books offer tons of instruction for using time wisely, they are traditionally organized in a linear fashion, which just isn't helpful for the right-brain mind. In Time Management for the Creative Person, creativity guru Lee Silber offers real advice for using the strengths of artistic folks—like originality and resourcefulness—to adopt innovative time-saving solutions, such as:* Learning to say no when your plate is just too full* How to know when a good job, not a great one, is good enough* Making "to do" lists that include fun stuff, too—that way you won't feel overwhelmed by work* Time-saving techniques around the house that give you more time to get your work done and more time to spend with your loved ones* The keys to clutter control that will keep your work space and your living space neatWith these and lots of other practical tips, Lee Silber will help anyone, from the time-starved caterer rushing to prepare for her next party to the preoccupied painter who forgets when the electric bill is due, make the most of their time and turn the clock and the calendar into friends, not foes.
