Organizing for Success: Tips, Tools, Ideas, and Strategies for Managing Time and Prioritizing Work Review

Organizing for Success: Tips, Tools, Ideas, and Strategies for Managing Time and Prioritizing Work

A must read for anyone who wants to get somewhere in life. Are you someone who just goes with the flow and then wonders why you're not getting where you want to be, or not getting there quick enough? Are you unhappy with the deck you are being dealt at work, or the path your career is taking? Are you trying to lead a company and you have nothing but headaches during your working day? If you answer "yes" to any one of these questions, then read this book. It's a very well written book on time management.
The book addresses workload challenges, unproductivity, the importance of goals, and provides practical insights, good strategies, and helpful tips. It will inform you (or remind you) that good meetings are paramount at work. It points out that a well-kept desk as opposed to a sloppy one will make you a more productive person. And that phone calls and emails should not be an all-day thing; they should be compartmentalized and dealt with in time blocks.
Although multitasking is probably the norm in most people's lives today, this book will remind you that making action item lists each morning and strategically organizing the action items is a far superior way of getting things done than just doing tasks as they show up in your face.
The title of this book includes the word "success." And the author in his book talks about the importance of goals in order to have a chance at success. If one focuses on goals and maps out or plans a series of objectives necessary to reach those goals, then it's just a matter of performing the tasks necessary to meet the objectives to reach the goal. Spend your time doing the things that will move you toward your goals, and eliminate or minimize your participation in activities that don't help you reach your goals. That's the essence of time management, and the essence of the message of this book.
It's an easy read, and one that is well worth your time.

Though written nearly 40 years ago, the strategies outlined in this book still ring true. Problems with time management are indeed timeless, as are the solutions. This book actually presents a "fresh" look at time management, void of the psychobabble that so infects such works today

This book was an inspiration that started me on a successful top management career. I've used this book in several leadership roles, over a 20-year period, as an motivational primer to set subordinates on a path to self-management and achievement. It's a quick and easy guide on how to get things done and to simplify your life too. Beats all of the other how-to books on time management that I've read, combined. Some of the basic management skills never change, no matter what the latest popular trend or fad.

Do It Tomorrow and Other Secrets of Time Management Review

This book is easy to read, informative, well written, fun, short and practical. Buy it immediately!! If I had had to pay $500 for this book, it would have been worth it. The book addresses the nuts and bolts of getting through the day easily and with grace. . The author understands that most of us have a misguided sense of urgency and teaches us how to be selective in terms of declaring what is urgent so that you can stay on track with what you planned for the day. The book helps you get everything done you are committed to, so that nothing falls through the cracks. Your kitchen floor is just as important as the report due on your boss's desk. How you can get both the mundane and the big projects done day by day is the meat of the book. Project work due in a week, or a month becomes a piece of cake-because you learn to start it right away and keep going in little steps. I already feel more relaxed since I have started followed his suggestions, and am getting more done. I can see that it would be possible to be on top of everything, which would make life a pure delight. I had never seen that possibility before even as a time management consultant! There is nothing like it out there as much fun, doable and original in the time management field. Once you try some of his suggestions you will truly be in a position to go for your dream life. But on the other hand by doing what he suggests, you may already find yourself living it. If you are always struggling to get a grip on time like most of us----this is the book for you.

Aimed at those who have trouble completing assignments on time as well as anyone looking to lead a well-organized life, this innovative handbook takes a unique approach to time management. Efficiency expert Mark Forster shows that prioritizing tasks is never a sufficient approach to organizing a schedule, and is rarely even helpful. In the place of prioritization he posits several radical new ideas, including closed lists, the manyana principle, and the "will do" list. Innovative forms of communication that are designed to produce effective conversation and planning are also provided. The result is a complete system which will boost efficiency and simultaneously decrease stress and overworking.

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity Review

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity

OK, first I have to admit I picked up the book at a local Border's where I had a copy on reserve. Having said that... I think I've tried every 'system' for organizing yourself out there. In the 80's it was Day-Timer and Day-Runner. Good calenders and address books, but not much else. 90's was Covey, and Franklin planning. Now we have 'roles and goals' which helps with long term planning but both systems were very inflexible when it came to planning your day to day stuff. I can remember Covey wanting me to plan out my entire week in advance. Nice in theory, but nowhere near reality for those of us whose jobs tend to be more 'crisis-oriented'. I've also tried Agenda, Ecco, Outlook, etc. but its hard to lug around your PC or laptop all the time. About two years ago I came across David Allen's tape seminar and I have to say its the best system I've ever found for organizing 'all' of your life. I can't say it's changed my life (I still have the same job, wife and kids and I still procrastinate too much ) but its certainly made all the difference in me being finally, actually organized on day-to-day basis. I'm now the only one in my office with a clean desk :)
The book covers just about the same material that I learned in the tape series. The tapes have more anecdotes and 'real-life' examples in them, but the book has a few new pearls and tricks that tells me David's been refining and polishing this system since the tape series.
Two last quick points: first, it requires no special binders or refills. You could use a cheap spiral notebook if you want. Personally, I use a palmpilot, which works well. Second, (IMHO) the Weekly Review is the cornerstone of making this system work, and its worked for me for two years. Remember that; it'll make sense once you read the book :) Now if I could only get David to come up with a system for procrastination....

I agree with the gist of everything he said in the basis of Time Management. Have clear goals. Goals come before action. Then have a to do list and prioritize it. Write things down. Habits are one of the best ways to gain effectiveness. Plan. All simple but effective. What I was looking for was new tips. I am a bit of a tough customer for new tips since I have read most books published in the last 10 years on the topic.
The book is not advocating a particular system, rather it is a compendium of tips.
Much of the book seemed fairly junior. Perhaps I am too studied and practise too much of it? Many of the tips seemed too obvious. Some seemed too trivial.
Some of his tips:
1 - Chaining as a way to build a habit. Think of building a chain for each day or week you do something. EG. If I want to run daily, each day I run is a new link. Perhaps I build 20 links then skip a day. I then start a new chain and try to break 20 etc.
2 - In cleaning, use 2 hands. Why not use 2 cloths instead of 1?
3 - Less credit cards or bank accounts means less paperwork, less reconciling etc.
4 - Have a don't do list. (one of my favourites)
5 - Buy in large quantity (EG Business Cards) to save the time of re-buying
6 - Pay annually rather than monthly - EG insurance.
I liked the list of websites the book has. They are good resources.
The book is short which I like - 100 pages.

Time Management for Busy People Review

Time Management for Busy People
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The colorful, almost cartoonish, look and feel of Roberta Roesch's book will probably put off people who prefer to have their solutions shown to them in black and white. And that's a shame because this book is an excellent time-management resource for everyone. Roesch created her book for people who "don't have time to read time books," and did a really wonderful job. By eschewing the standard book format, she may have alienated some readers who prefer their books to look serious. But it is precisely this format that encourages readers who wouldn't normally buy time management books to give this one a chance.
You can read this book straight through, but its most valuable sections stand on their own. A number of questionnaires help you determine whether the material in a section covers an area that concerns you. The book is also peppered with "minutes matter," call-out boxes that offer short time-saving tips. It caters to those with short attention spans, but without being trite. It is particularly useful for those who have purchased time-management books before, but gave up on them out of boredom or frustration. We recommend this book to anyone interested in time-management. In short, if you don't have the time for time management, this book is for you.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Time (3rd Edition) Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Time (3rd Edition)

I just finished the 3rd edition of MYT, and was quite impressed. I haven't seen the first two editions, but this one certainly fills the bill, if you're looking for solutions to time-pressure problems. That the book is funny, is a real bonus. It makes it easier to get through every chapter. I found the section found "Thinking Your Way Out of Timetraps" to be the best part of the book. After all, much of what we face on a daily basis is self-induced. You can blame your boss, you can blame other people, but when you really get honest with yourself, as you learn in the book, most of the time pressure you feel is a result of your own activities and beliefs. Do yourself a favor and get this book.
