Getting Organized: Improving Focus, Organization and Productivity Review

Getting Organized: Improving Focus, Organization and Productivity

This is a very good book to help you get organized. I originally had a three star and changed it to a four star. So many of this book's best elements are also found in David Allen's Getting Things Done. I read Allen's book last year and it knocked my socks off. When I read this, I wasn't as impressed as I would have if I read Crouch's before Allen's (they're both obviously drawing some of the best tidbits from some of the same material that preceded them). They have many, many of the same very helpful tips. The advantage of Crouch's is that is has short digestible chapters. However, an overall approach does not clearly emerge, just a bunch of big and small organizing ideas. An advantage of Allen's is that you get a clear, overarching approach into which all those good tips suggested in these books fit. Allen's chapters are longer, and though very readable, can get a little bogged down compared to Crouch. If I had only one book to buy, I'd get Allen's. However, I'm glad I read Crouch's because it has given me a refresher.
Getting organized is a major issue for many of us (I work two jobs, both of which require me to maintain an office). While one book may do it for some, I strongly believe that major habit changes will more likely come if you really plunge into an area like this. That means reading Crouch's book, Allen's book, and even Julie Morganstern's Organizing from the Inside Out. While Allen and Crouch focus on the office and home office (mail, home files, etc.), Morgenstern also covers garage, basement, closets, etc. I'm serious, to change the way you look at things, you need to read several books and make yourself an "expert." Otherwise, it will be a book you read that you're not likely to act on.
I read them in the order of 1) Allen, 2) Morgenstern and 3) Crouch. If any readers will choose to read all three of these, I'd recommend Crouch first, then Allen, then Morgenstern. Crouch will lure you in with his short little chapters (once you get past his too many introductory-type chapters before you get into the good stuff). Then, reinforce what you learn by reading a lot of overlapping stuff in Allen's book, but Allen will give you an outline or framework that ties it all together. Then, move on from the office to your closets and garage with Morgenstern. Of the three, Allen was the best for me, but I needed the others to sustain my momentum. Good luck!

How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life (Signet) Review

How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life (Signet)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life is, perhaps, the best book on time management ever written. It does not waste your time but gets right to the point. You must establish SMART (specific, measurable, achieveable, related/relevant, and time framed) goals for yourself and then prioritize them using Lakein's A/C system. "A" goals are the most important to you and you must plan on spending 80% of your time to achieve them. "C" goals (TV, lawn care, shopping, etc.) are the place where most people "waste" their lives and spend 80% of their time. This ratio must be reversed, according to Lakein.
He would agree with e.e. cummings that "To be nobody but yourself in a world that is night and day trying to make you just like everybody else means to fight the hardest fight any human being can fight, and never stop fighting." Once we have set goals that utilize our unique talents and abilities, we will have the will power and determination to do the work necessary to achieve them.
To accomplish our goals Lakein recommends that we make a daily "to do" list and always start with "A's," not "C's." Most of our time is spent working harder on things that don't matter. We may be efficient, but Lakein suggests that our goal is to do what matters most and become effective. "Work smarter, not harder" is the mantra he wants us to repeat and couple that saying with his last piece of advice --"Do it now."
Stick your finger into this small book and any page you hit will have wise words to put into action. Learning comes from daily practice and developing habits that "put first things first," taken from Stephen Covey's best seller, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People -- also recommended is Covey's fine book on effective living appropriately titled First Things First.
Rarely has a book that costs so little paid such rich dividends. You won't be disappointed.

Time Tactics of Very Successful People Review

Time Tactics of Very Successful People
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This fine book stands alone as a real "nuts & bolts" guide to time management. Refreshingly, Griessman does not ask the reader to buy into an integrated or even singular "System" of managing your time. There are no self tests, no "12 Step" program, no gimmicks.
Quite simply, this book is about survival. If your boat were sinking or you were lost in the wilderness, the last thing you would want (or have time to read) would be a lengthy treatise on the theory of bouyancy or how people get lost. Rather, Griessman instructs from the outset that you "Learn survival techniques from the survivors."
In this vein, Griessman's approach is decidedly simple: 1)These are successful people; 2) Here are specific tactics that they use to save time and survive; 3) You fill in the blank. This format is woven into 15 short chapters with an accompanying commentary which is almost editorial in nature. This provides just enough cohesion in the book to give it structure, without detracting from its readability.
If you're looking for a lengthy treatise on time management, riddled with charts, self tests and lengthy explanations about why you don't have enough time, then leave this book on the shelf. "Time Tactics" is really a field manual - the same kind of lean, to the point writing you'd hope to find in a life raft.

The 25 Best Time Management Tools & Techniques: How to Get More Done Without Driving Yourself Crazy Review

The 25 Best Time Management Tools and Techniques: How to Get More Done Without Driving Yourself Crazy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No matter how well you manage time, this book will make you better at managing time and return your investment many times over.
You get the benefit of the top twenty books on time management in one easy to read book. The authors took an interesting approach to writing this book. They started by reading the Amazon.com customer reviews for over 40 time management books. Then they bought and read the top 20 of these books. The key points from these books were then summarized as 25 clearly described tools and techniques and grouped into five areas of focus:
* Determine what is really important to you.
* Manage your plans to get results.
* Organize your living and work spaces.
* Manage your actions.
* Implement continuous improvement.
Each of these five areas has a brief description of what is to be covered. Within each area the relevant tools and techniques are concisely described so that you can put what you have learned into action immediately.
The simplicity of this book is a distinct benefit - the book is easy to read and the techniques are succinctly presented - preventing the reader from getting lost in the details and hence never addressing their time management issues. Anyone looking to get a handle on time management issues has immediate access to proven concepts and tools for changing what they are doing now.
For those wishing more information on a particular tool or technique, the authors reference specific books or provide directions where this additional information can be found. Generally this works well. However, I was disappointed on one occasion. In the section on creating a vision, I would have liked to see examples of vision statements rather than being referred to another book. For me this was an unnecessary interruption of my thought processes.
Two useful appendices are available with additional information: The Best Time Management Books - Annotated and Other Recommended Books. A third appendix, How to Buy Books for (Much) Less, could have been left out as the information was not related to the topic of the book and did not add much value.
