Weekend Entrepreneur: 101 Great Ways to Earn Extra Cash Review

Weekend Entrepreneur: 101 Great Ways to Earn Extra Cash
Average Reviews:

This book lives up to its title. It's a nice introduction to the topic of part-time (weekend) and home-based entrepreneurship, and should be a very helpful guide to anyone who is just starting out and simply needs an easy read with lots of ideas and some business basics. If that's what you're looking for, this book delivers.
As a serial entrepreneur who has started several ventures, both small and large, I really admire individuals who don't have a lot of time on their hands yet are motivated to take the first steps towards some extra cash -- and even the possibility of financial independence. It takes courage, especially for those with a full-time job and family obligations.
This book introduces the concept of part-time entrepreneurship, provides lots of part-time and home-based business ideas, and also some advice about marketing, etc. In some ways, the most valuable part of this book are the ideas that it presents (a page or two dedicated to each concept). Most of the ideas are within the reach of an entrepreneur who doesn't have a lot of start-up capital, and all are achieveable to varying degrees depending on how much time one can dedicate to them. Also, I really like the fact that this book takes the family into consideration and even discusses how to get the kids involved. For a mother or father trying to make a go of an entrepreneurial business after work or on the weekends, involving the kids can make all the difference in the world. It's nice to see this aspect of home-based entrepreneurship addressed.
The bottom line is that this book is for people who are just starting out and interested in a part-time, home-based business. It provides lots of ideas. If you use one of their ideas, great. And if not, it's still likely that the ideas presented in this books could inspire you and lead you to your own business concept. After you launch your business there are many other resources that will be helpful to you, but the key is to get going, and on that front this book is a good place to start.

"As a new mom, I am in a situation where I am evaluating part-time work as an option. Full-Time Woman, Part-Time Career opened my eyes to some alternatives to a full-time job and gave me several ideas how to pursue this lifestyle. I especially enjoyed Chapter 3, the case study of Cynthia Long, a professional Project Manager. Reading about her made me think this would be a good fit for me, given my existing skills."

The One Minute Entrepreneur: The Secret to Creating and Sustaining a Successful Business Review

The One Minute Entrepreneur: The Secret to Creating and Sustaining a Successful Business

Compared to some of his previous books this one really disappoints. The story is told as a hokey narrative (as is Blanchard's style) of the hapless protagonist as he struggles to start his career in sales and then start his own business. It quickly dissolves into a shameless ad for a half dozen or so motivational speakers and fellow authors. Very little meat on the bone. Each chapter ends with a list of a few folksy hints and tips our hero learns, but they are often not well developed or supported in the story and add little to this boring shallow book. Pass on this one. For a good getting started in business story with better take-aways read Maverick: The Success Story Behind the World's Most Unusual Workplace by Ricardo Semler.

Ms. Sinclair-Robinson is one smart lady you absolutely want to meet! Be sure to pick up this guide for your success in small business. The book is not just a guide for alternative funding - she touches base on everything a small business owner needs to know to compete in today's economy.
As a third-time business owner, I wish I had this knowledge when I tried the first time. Section 1 helps you review the basics for getting started in business; the importance of cleaning up your credit; and the many myths associated with financing. Another very important topic covered is business planning and how you can use your business plan to accomplish your goals and stay on a successful track.
In Section 2, you will find advantages and disadvantages for every kind of financing available - both traditional and alternative. Many of these I was aware of but did not fully understand until I read this book. A few options were pleasant surprises I intend to exploit!
This is a must-have tool for any business owner - no matter the size. Thank you so much for publishing it!

New Business Opportunities: Getting to the Right Place at the Right Time Review

New Business Opportunities: Getting to the Right Place at the Right Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This excellent book is among my personal collection of selected books written by Jeffry Timmons, who is internationally renowned and respected in the field of entrepreneurship education and research. It follows Timmons' earlier book, The Entrepreneurial Mind, which I had already reviewed. In some way, it is linked to also Timmons' earlier (now revised/expanded for the 21st Century) pioneering book, New Venture Creation.
What I like about this book is that it helps you to understand the critical difference between 'idea' and 'opportunity', and also how to evaluate each and pursue them. It has a focus on execution as opposed to just having ideas.
For an entrepreneur wannabe, a clear understanding of the distinctions between an 'idea' and an 'opportunity' can make or break the business or project success. As the saying goes, Clarity is Power!
In a nutshell, it helps you to answer many crucial questions at the onset, prior to embarking on your venture, for example:
- what is a good opportunity?
- why do a selected few opportunities inherently have much greater upside potential than all the rest?
- why and how do winning entrepreneurs often find the best opportunities?
- how can you find such opportunities? or create one?
- would you recognise an opportunity when you see it?
- how can you determine whether the opportunity will last?
- is it the right opportunity for you?
- can you determine to what extent it will add or create value, and thereby actually fill a customer need?
All the chapters in the book are well organised and systematically structured for easy follow-up reading.
The core chapters, which I find very useful, are as follows:
Chapter 1: what is an idea?
Chapter 2: enhancing creativity (tickles your brain!);
Chapter 3: sources of new business ideas:
Chapter 4: recognising opportunities (wow!);
Chapter 5: sources for opportunity screening (wow!);
Chapter 7: opportunity screening guide ( a real gem!);
Chapter 8: using other peoples resources or OPR (very interesting insight!);
The opportunity screening guide illustrated in the book is a real gem. It can really help you to determine whether you want to continue your initial pursuit and develop a complete business plan.
The remaining chapters, chapter 13, 14, 15 16 and 17 show how the three essentials of venture creation: opportunities, people and resources come together to face the many difficulties, which arise for entrepreneurs. With these enlightening chapters covering entrepreneurs in action, this book is deeply rooted in real-world applications plus 20 years of classroom refinement by the author as an entrepreneurship educator/academic.
Best of all and on the whole, the book is very easy to read and follow. Timmons writes very concisely and succinctly.
I strongly recommend this book to all entrepreneur wannabes to read - and reflect - before you embark on your pursuit.

If you have ever wanted to start your own business but worried about how you are going to pay your mortgage, then take a read of these fifty ideas that you can start alongside your day job. Emma Jones calls these people 5-9ers and there are some brilliant ideas here. My husband is one of them and he absolutely loves running his business in the evenings and weekends. What was very interesting from the book was how many support organisations there are out there to get help from. Great book.

The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything Review

The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book makes a big promise with its sub-title, "The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything." I wondered if such a book could live up to it. "Starting anything" refers to a business, not a career, school, or hobby.
Obviously, it's impossible to create a comprehensive book of business best practices because every business has its own variables. What works great for one may kill another. However, the book doesn't take that approach. Rather, it tells how it is starting a business and the rough road of dealing with VCs (venture capitalists). If you expect a positive spin on stuff that's hard to do. Read a fairy tale instead.
Rather than abrasiveness and a "do this, don't do this" attitude, Kawasaki uses humor to explain the process. Anyone who has a small business including those around for a few years will benefit. When ready to take action, use this book as the manual that doesn't come with starting a business. Thinking about it isn't going to make a business successful.
Every chapter begins with the GIST of it, an overview of what's to come. Each ends with FAQ, frequently AVOIDED questions, to review the chapter's content and drill it in deeper for better understanding and implementation.
Get simple, but important hints on everyday business practices such as how to give a strong presentation. How many times have you sat through a presentation where each slide has over 20 words in size 12 point and the presenter practically reads the words adding little to what is on the slide? Kawasaki smartly covers the 10-20-30 rule. 10 slides, 20 minutes, and size 30 font. Making changes to the small practices can lead to reaching the next milestone.
This book can be likened to a quick reference guide for starting a business and useful strategies: has just what is needed without heavy-duty or dry language. It is, however, larger than most quick guides, but a fast and easy read into the world of startups and dealing with VCs. If a VC isn't involved, the book provides valuable tools and ideas to help with any business. However, technology start ups seeking VCs will benefit most.
Stuck on a business plan? Learn what is needed and not needed. Don't waste valuable time and use the book to do what's necessary without going overboard.
If long hours and challenges aren't in the plans, then read a romanticized business book instead. The Art of the Start shows how it really is and it's hard, but it can be a little easier with this book as a guide.
Get a taste of the book by reading its manifesto (http://www.changethis.com/1.ArtOfTheStart), a free PDF download. The 34 page document should give you a clear idea of whether or not the book is for you as it includes the same components found in the book. As a bonus, the manifesto includes Great Ideas for Starting Things, covered in the first chapter. If the material and the table of contents sound enticing, get it.

What does it take to turn ideas into action? What are the elements of a perfect pitch? How do you win the war for talent? How do you establish a brand without bucks? These are some of the issues everyone faces when starting or revitalizing any undertaking, and Guy Kawasaki, former marketing maven of Apple Computer, provides the answers. The Art of the Start will give you the essential steps to launch great products, services, and companies—whether you are dreaming of starting the next Microsoft or a not-for-profit that's going to change the world. It also shows managers how to unleash entrepreneurial thinking at established companies, helping them foster the pluck and creativity that their businesses need to stay ahead of the pack. Kawasaki provides readers with GIST—Great Ideas for Starting Things—including his field-tested insider's techniques for bootstrapping, branding, networking, recruiting, pitching, rainmaking, and, most important in this fickle consumer climate, building buzz. At Apple, Kawasaki helped turn ordinary customers into fanatics. As founder and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, he has tested his iconoclastic ideas on real- world start- ups. And as an irrepressible columnist for Forbes, he has honed his best thinking about The Art of the Start.

This is the best book on starting business that I've come across. A lot of practical tips on various strategies (marketing, pricing, promoting etc.). However, it is probably more about running a new business rather than steps in opening one. Worth reading thus.
