How To Write A Proposal That's Accepted Every Time Review

How To Write A Proposal That's Accepted Every Time
Average Reviews:

I was skeptical. How could one book be worth over $100? And how could Alan Weiss tell me how to write proposals to my unique clients? It has been almost one year since I asked those questions...If I knew then what I know now, I would have paid a $1000 for this book! Here are the facts, when I first started using Alan's proposal templates my closing ratio went down from approximately 90% to 75%. BUT my consulting engagment fees went UP OVER 100%. Now, I have learned to avoid clients who don't value my work and my closing ratio has gone back to about 90% at almost double the value to me! But that is not the biggest benefit, through this book I learned how to get paid in advance...before I ever begin the project. Prior to using Alan's models I was never paid in advance, now 40% of my clients are paying me a much higher fee and paying it in advance.
I no longer have this book. I took the pages apart and filed the proposal templates according to my client base and instructed my client services manager to never deviate from these templates.
There are many books that have helped me think more critically, solve problems quicker and speak more effectively...BUT nothing has helped me increase my consulting revenue like this one by Alan Weiss.

This is a great book for inspiration. If you have been thinking of starting a business, read this. It may give you the kick to get started. Most of the entreprenures are from the Uk, but they have the same inspirations and struggles as someone in the USA. It also has a lot of typos in it, but that didn't take away from the content. I would highly recommend. Kami

Campus CEO: The Student Entrepreneur's Guide to Launching a Multi-Million-Dollar Business
Average Reviews:

It's been 13 years since I graduated college - so I'm definitely past the typical "Campus CEO" age - still, Dr. Pinkett's book taught me so much. I've had a small, side business in addition to my full-time job for almost a decade, however I've never really taken the time to write a full business plan, research how to obtain investors or other funding, hire other employees, etc.
"Campus CEO" has taught me about all of those things, and more.
One of the greatest things about "Campus CEO" is its user-friendly approach and candid, conversational tone. I bought an extra copy to share with my children and recommend others do the same. Dr. Pinkett's book is inspiring and a must-read for anyone - not just those on campus - interested in learning more about starting a business.

The book covers some business basics which makes it handy and useful for those venturing into new businesses but with limited background on how to start and run a business. The areas covered include the start-up process, marketing the business, bank accounts, bookkeeping, cash-flow forecasting, tax returns, business plans, legal entities, financing, import and export and insurance. The book is written in a simple and easy to follow style. Therefore I recommend it to budding entrepreneurs as it provides valuable advice that should help you start and nature a successful small business.
Those with some business background will likely find the book to be too basic and can therefore pass this one.

Average Reviews:

According to Antarctic explorer Roald Amundsen, "Adventure is just bad planning." Adventure is certainly not a priority in business. To avoid it, all firms need a well-conceived, properly organized and expertly written business plan. A good business plan can help your business accomplish vital objectives, such as securing the financial backing you need to take your company to the next level or getting top dollar if you decide to sell the firm. Brian Finch, a seasoned business professional, has assembled a basic, practical - though list-heavy - book on how to write a concrete business plan to achieve maximum impact. Although he rightly remarks that "there is bound to be some repetition in your business plan, just as there is in this book," getAbstract finds that rookie entrepreneurs will benefit from his savvy advice.

Everyone likes their own ideas and everyone believes that their own ideas are fool-proof. There's no way to check and grind your idea/business plan before going to actual VCs. Till now the only way to analyze your idea was by going through the 3Fs (Famliy, Friends and Fools).
Here is where 'The New Business Road Test' comes in as a savior. This book has all the ideas/ procedures/ questions/ & guidelines to review and grill your idea to perfection before plunging into the real venture. There are many books out there to tell you HOW to write a business plan, but none to actually analyze your business plan.
The presentation of the book is quite simple to understand and refer to in future. The 'Seven Domain Analysis' diagram really makes it simple to review any idea/plan and term it as feasible or not-feasible.
I read the book before going into my first venture and it made me look at my business plan in a whole different way. Even today while I am lookin at a new venture, I find myself always going back and refering to this book.
Once Read, this book will make a place in your entrepreneurial life. This is a must-read book for entrepreneurs as well as VC aspirants.

Start Your Own Business, Fifth Edition (Start Your Own Business: The Only Start-Up Book You'll Ever Need)
Average Reviews:

I was originally skeptical when I received an early copy of Start Your Own Business. Part of my skepticism was the "ONLY startup book you'll ever need" banner on the front cover.
However, after living with Start Your Own Business for several months, and finding myself not only referring back to it, but also recommending it to family members and friends, I now realize the banner isn't a claim, but is a credible statement. The amount of detail inside, along with dozens of worksheets, makes this an ideal handbook to be kept within reach at all times.
The book's length, 700+ pages, also was an initial concern. Who has time to read 700+ pages? But, that's not a valid concern, for the same reason that the Physicians Desk Reference doesn't have to be "read" as much as "referred to" as needed. The detailed table of contents, which organizes chapters into 8 main sections, makes it easy to locate the information you desire.
Start Your Own Business is a great resource that brings everything together in one place for both startups and serial entrepreneurs.

The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything Review

The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book makes a big promise with its sub-title, "The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything." I wondered if such a book could live up to it. "Starting anything" refers to a business, not a career, school, or hobby.
Obviously, it's impossible to create a comprehensive book of business best practices because every business has its own variables. What works great for one may kill another. However, the book doesn't take that approach. Rather, it tells how it is starting a business and the rough road of dealing with VCs (venture capitalists). If you expect a positive spin on stuff that's hard to do. Read a fairy tale instead.
Rather than abrasiveness and a "do this, don't do this" attitude, Kawasaki uses humor to explain the process. Anyone who has a small business including those around for a few years will benefit. When ready to take action, use this book as the manual that doesn't come with starting a business. Thinking about it isn't going to make a business successful.
Every chapter begins with the GIST of it, an overview of what's to come. Each ends with FAQ, frequently AVOIDED questions, to review the chapter's content and drill it in deeper for better understanding and implementation.
Get simple, but important hints on everyday business practices such as how to give a strong presentation. How many times have you sat through a presentation where each slide has over 20 words in size 12 point and the presenter practically reads the words adding little to what is on the slide? Kawasaki smartly covers the 10-20-30 rule. 10 slides, 20 minutes, and size 30 font. Making changes to the small practices can lead to reaching the next milestone.
This book can be likened to a quick reference guide for starting a business and useful strategies: has just what is needed without heavy-duty or dry language. It is, however, larger than most quick guides, but a fast and easy read into the world of startups and dealing with VCs. If a VC isn't involved, the book provides valuable tools and ideas to help with any business. However, technology start ups seeking VCs will benefit most.
Stuck on a business plan? Learn what is needed and not needed. Don't waste valuable time and use the book to do what's necessary without going overboard.
If long hours and challenges aren't in the plans, then read a romanticized business book instead. The Art of the Start shows how it really is and it's hard, but it can be a little easier with this book as a guide.
Get a taste of the book by reading its manifesto (http://www.changethis.com/1.ArtOfTheStart), a free PDF download. The 34 page document should give you a clear idea of whether or not the book is for you as it includes the same components found in the book. As a bonus, the manifesto includes Great Ideas for Starting Things, covered in the first chapter. If the material and the table of contents sound enticing, get it.

What does it take to turn ideas into action? What are the elements of a perfect pitch? How do you win the war for talent? How do you establish a brand without bucks? These are some of the issues everyone faces when starting or revitalizing any undertaking, and Guy Kawasaki, former marketing maven of Apple Computer, provides the answers. The Art of the Start will give you the essential steps to launch great products, services, and companies—whether you are dreaming of starting the next Microsoft or a not-for-profit that's going to change the world. It also shows managers how to unleash entrepreneurial thinking at established companies, helping them foster the pluck and creativity that their businesses need to stay ahead of the pack. Kawasaki provides readers with GIST—Great Ideas for Starting Things—including his field-tested insider's techniques for bootstrapping, branding, networking, recruiting, pitching, rainmaking, and, most important in this fickle consumer climate, building buzz. At Apple, Kawasaki helped turn ordinary customers into fanatics. As founder and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, he has tested his iconoclastic ideas on real- world start- ups. And as an irrepressible columnist for Forbes, he has honed his best thinking about The Art of the Start.

My favorite parts: The chapter on social media marketing, the "Pulling a 180" chapter on turning your business around, and the section on social entrepreneurship. Good stuff!
