10,001 Ways to Live Large on a Small Budget Review

I was flipping through this book at Barnes yesterday while waiting for my girlfriend to finish buying a gift for her friend's birthday. The book is basically a bunch of individual lists and howtos -- how to buy wine, 23 common interview questions, etc. By the time my girlfriend was ready to go, I was still reading the article on how to shop for wine, so I brought the book home. Couldn't put it down the rest of the night! I read through the entire budget travel section since we're planning for a trip this summer. And the article on how to open a roth IRA is going to come in handy. I've been thinking about opening one for the last few months and I think I'm going to do it next week. This book is full of tips for a wide range of financial topics. I highly recommended for anyone looking to get more out of their money.

Work Wanted: Protect Your Retirement Plans in Uncertain Times Review

Work Wanted: Protect Your Retirement Plans in Uncertain Times

Strongly recommend this as a wonderful source of practical help in navigating the difficult passage from work and career to retirement and new frontiers. Accessible, very readable and exhaustive: sort of akin to a "Turbotax" program for preparing ones "returns for the future". The authors don't make the common mistake of pandering to Baby Boomer hubris and are commendably non-judgmental and wise. The tone is more: "Did you know this?"; "Have you fully thought through that?"; "Can you afford what you plan to do?". And herein lies an interesting twist: events in the global economy have swept away many of the book's rosier assumptions and yet have made it all the more indispensable. The plunge in 401Ks and retirement wealth is calamitous in absolute terms but particularly so for the legion of boomers who don't have the working years left to recoup. Painful and unfair certainly but no better moment for a full audit of hopes, dreams, health and wealth. Work Wanted will ease the pain and help clarify options.

The Difference Wealth-Building Journal: Discover How You Can Prosper in Even the Toughest Times Review

The Difference Wealth-Building Journal: Discover How You Can Prosper in Even the Toughest Times
Average Reviews:

Building personal wealth can be learned - that's the premise of The Difference Wealth-Building Journal. This is a powerful "hands-on" journal/workbook that is geared toward showing you how to build the day-to-day successful habits of financial freedom.
I've learned that the best way to acquire knowledge in the shortest period of time is to follow those who have the wisdom and experience to save us time, energy and money. The Difference Wealth-Building Journal can do all that! This hands-on step-by-step journal can show us how to practically acquire financial freedom. Taken from the cover: "Realize your life goals - overcome setbacks - with powerful planning exercises."
This journal is the companion to the book The Difference: How To Prosper In Even The Toughest Times. I believe this journal is also a standalone book that can be used to support and even direct our financial successes. I recommend reading the book and using the journal together - although in reviewing the journal I found it could be helpful all by itself.
What caught my eye and held my attention were the statistics on the first page of the introduction:
3 percent of Americans are wealthy
27 percent are financially comfortable
54 percent live paycheck to paycheck
15 percent are the "further-in-debtors"
Here is a hands-on workbook that has the potential of taking you to the wealthy 3 percent strata of Americans if you're willing to read, learn, chart and apply the advice of Jean Chatzky. The author tells us, that through her research she has found the personality traits, habits and financial beliefs that separate the wealthy from those sinking further into debt.
This "journal" is a true journal - one you can date, write in and keep track of your "aha's" and financial progress. It's a spiral workbook so you can lay it out flat to write easily. Each chapter is designed to teach the success traits, habits and beliefs of the wealthy. It is up to you to make the decision to apply "The Difference" and change negative financial habits into more positive ones.
Each chapter is designed to lead into and work with each of the other chapters. It is the synergy of reading and working the chapters that can lead to the new financially empowered attributes. Here is a summary of the chapters:
Chapter 1 - "Attribute Focus: Saving"
How spending more than you make is as bad for you emotionally as it is financially.
Chapter 2 - "Attribute Focus: Investing"
Steps for bringing your investment plan to life.
Chapter 3 - "Attribute Focus: Drive"
Knowing what you want and plotting a course to achieve your goals.
Chapter 4 - "Attribute Focus: Hard Work"
How to make the most of money making hours and opportunities.
Chapter 5 - "Attribute Focus: Passion and Curiosity"
The importance of finding your "calling" in life.
Chapter 6 - "Attribute Focus: Connectedness"
Making the right connections to increase your wealth potential.
Chapter 7 - "Attribute Focus: Optimism"
Bottom line - optimists make more money.
Chapter 8 - Attribute Focus: Resilience"
Wealthy people triumph over setbacks.
Chapter 9 - Attribute Focus: Gratitude"
Saying thank you is a powerful financial success tool.
If you are a visual "hands-on" learner who enjoys the connection between reading, writing and applying what you're learning, then this workbook/journal is ideal for you. The Difference Wealth Building Journal can help you Discover How You Can Prosper in Even The Toughest Times by Jean Chatzky is a well written and well rounded guide to increasing your financial freedom. I highly recommend!

Impact Your Business: An allegory of an entrepreneur's journey to clarity, cash, profit, family, and success Review

Impact Your Business: An allegory of an entrepreneur's journey to clarity, cash, profit, family, and success
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ken Kaufman's Impact Your Business is a business book that reads like a well-written short story. It is a must-read for small and mid-size business owners and non-financial executives alike.
Impact Your Business is an excellent example of financial best practices and the power these practices have to keep companies out of financial trouble or to rescue those already in trouble.
Meet Steve Loveland: Entrepreneur and business owner, now at risk of losing it all.
Many business owners and executives running SMBs will identify with the book's entrepreneur business owner, Steve Loveland. Steve has known the thrill of success, but is currently experiencing a dark depression over the possibility that his business won't survive. "When the allegory begins, he's overwhelmed, depressed, frustrated, and tired. The burdens he carries are heavy, and he can't seem to find a way to lighten his load."
Steve Loveland represents all the business owners whose businesses have outgrown their ability to manage all details and who don't have the clarity that financial reporting systems can provide to support the enterprise at its current level.
Finding clarity and reducing anxiety.
Clarity is a key word in Impact Your Business. The more clarity in all parts of the business, especially the financial elements, the less anxiety the business owner will experience. Ken's book is a journey to financial clarity.
Clarity is found in the persona of Jennifer, a finance executive who serves Steve as an interim CFO, and the IMPACT criteria she employs to provide peace of mind, better decision-making, and improved cash flow and profits.
IMPACT is an acronym. It represents the six criteria to which all reports and information an entrepreneur receives about the business' performance should adhere: Insightful, Meaningful, Precise, Accessible (both physically and intellectually), Comparative, and Timely.
Praise for Impact Your Business.
Anita Campbell, whose SmallBizTrends.com is one of the savviest and most respected websites dedicated to small businesses, writes, "As a business owner it's all too easy to wake up one day and find that your business and indeed your life-feel out of control. Impact Your Business give you the inspiration-and the nuts and bolts advice-you need to deal with the challenges and be the success you KNOW you can be."
More than business insight.
Impact Your Business is more than mere business insight; it is business wisdom and life wisdom woven together. In this regard, it is similar to other books that I've read and enjoyed. They include: The Art of Profitability by Adrian Slywotzky; Lessons From The Window Seat-Achieving Shared Vision in the Workplace by David Specht; Loving Monday-Succeeding in Business Without Selling Your Soul by John D. Beckett; and Gifts From Eykis-A Story of Self-Discovery by Wayne W. Dyer.

Great Book! I totally enjoyed reading it. I have a small collection of books on money management. None have moved me to action such as this one. It was so easy to read. Everything was explained very well. What I also loved about this book was the endless resource Ms. Stephens gave. Her example of everyday people whom did well investing small amounts of money encouraged me tremendously. I founded myself running back to my budget trying to find more money to invest. She removed all my fears and doubt. I hated keeping a budget at first. I hated seeing in printed how much money I did not have. Now I love keeping my financial records. I gladly count my pennies because I know it is my beginning of a bright financial future! Thank you Brooke Stephens.

Missed Fortune: Dispel the Money Myth-Conceptions--Isn't It Time You Became Wealthy? Review

Missed Fortune: Dispel the Money Myth-Conceptions--Isn't It Time You Became Wealthy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I came upon an ad by the author, Mr. Andrews in the Sunday Los Angeles Times today - 5/22/05. It mentioned his book as well as a lot of claims to max ones wealth. So, I thought to do a bit of a google search on him and the title of his book. I did finally find a review by a Certified Financial Planner on the Seattle times website: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002192636_qa_retirementhotline.html
I thought it wise to share this with anyone intersted and feel that most who read the following may want to hold back on buying his book.
Equity Indexed Life Insurance-I have been approached by several insurance agents regarding using equity indexed annuities to creat an arbitrage using home equity. They are basing their approach on a recent book written by Douglas Andrew-Missed Fortune and Missed Fortune 101- suggesting interest only mortgages and investing the equity in S & P 500 indexed annuities. Invest the max amount allowable under law with the least amount of insurance required, etc. What are your thoughts on this strategy? Have you read or heard about this book and the author? - Cary, N.C.
FP: I just finished reading the book "Missed Fortune". The concept is interesting and may make sense in a very few specific cases, I would be wary of its general applicability. The book fails to adequately address the risks inherent in the strategy.
The first part of the strategy I would be concerned with is the notion that you can structure interest only loans to last a long time. Interest only loans typically have an interest only period of 10 years or less.
The most "attractive" interest rates are associated with adjustable rate mortgages. Most of these have fixed rate periods of 3, 5 or 7 years. So, for the strategy to work as advertised, you will need to refinance (or sell and purchase another home)as often as every 7 years or less. And then you will have to hope that (a) you will qualify for new financing and (b) that today's low rates are available.
The strategy presented in the book assumes that your home interest is fully tax deductable. The analysis does not account for the fact that most people actually only receive a partial deduction since their itemized deductions aside from the home mortgage interest add up to substantially less than the standard deduction (which is scheduled to rise over time).
And finally, the strategy assumes that you will earn a relatively high rate of return on the equity index life insurance cash value. Every projection the book makes has an unreasonably high rate of interest projected for a long time into the future. The strategy prospects for success are highly sensitive to the rate that you acutally receive.
If the insurance policy return is as little as .5 - 1% less on average, the strategy has real problems. And the problems can be huge.
If you are drawing "tax free" income out of an insurance policy through a series of policy loans as shown in the book, the policy surrender value drops steadily. When the policy surrender value drops to zero, which it could quickly if interest rates are less than hoped for, the policy lapses and all the interest that has been credited on a tax deferred basis suddenly becomes taxable income.
The author's answer to this problem is to suggest that the IRS is unlikely to go after a 90 year old for that kind of tax. You wouldn't want to test that theory.
The bottom line is that there is no free lunch. The equity index insurance products ability to credit interest to the cash value is essentially the same as any fixed insurance product. The fact that the interest credit is "linked" to the S&P 500 index is very different from actual market participation. It's just a calculation that happens to use some aspects of the S&P 500 index performance in the formula.
While the products do provide protection against market losses, that protection comes at a price. The price is that they will not and cannot produce long term returns similar to market returns.
For people in the highest tax brackets who are not going to depend on the insurance policy performance to provide retirement income and who will save enough in income taxes to offset the inherent costs in the strategy, there may be a place for this strategy. Aside from this narrow group of people, trhe strategy is almost certainly inappropriate.
People should recognize that this is a very complex strategy with many pitfalls that are not well presented or analyzed in the book. Be very careful!

Money Masters of Our Time Review

Money Masters of Our Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have read Mr. Train's earlier books The Money Masters and The New Money Masters and found them informative and interesting, gaining insights from some of the worlds most sucessful investors. Mr. Train's research seemed to rely heavily on personal interviews of these Masters often providing the reader with unique investment philosophies not readily available elsewhere. I especially recommend Mr. Train's first book in this series The Money Masters because this book moved me away from the trading of stocks and futures as practiced by Robert Wilson the short seller and Stanly Kroll the great commodity speculator. The techniques they employed seemed too elusive and fraught with risk and if this was the basis of the trading game it was not the game for me. I was instead attracted to the similer philosophies of mentor and student Ben Grahman and Warren Buffett. Looking at a stock as a share of a business not a piece of paper with a number on it. This was the first time I had been exposed to the wisdom of these two investors and I am grateful to Mr. Train for revealing to the public their methods. The problem I have with the current rendition is that it really adds nothing new. In fact Mr. Train seems to have copied parts of the first Money Masters and spliced them into this version. I may be wrong but it doesn't seem that the effort or creativity that went into the original went into this work. Another sort of irritating quality in this instance thankfully not present in the first book is Mr. Train's need to psychoanalyze some of his subjects especially Mr. Buffett. This adds an edge to the book that is not worthy of Mr. Train.

A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Time-Tested Strategy for Successful Investing (Completely Revised and Updated) Review

A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Time-Tested Strategy for Successful Investing (Completely Revised and Updated)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a classic book, first published in 1973. The 9th edition just came out this year. Every investor, whether you believe in market efficiency or not, should read this book at least once. This book does a very good job reconciling between market efficiency and perceived inefficiencies such as bubbles at different times. The author believes in a weak form of efficient market theory. Simply put, the market may not be perfectly efficient at all times, but it's efficient enough to make it very difficult and costly trying to beat it. In the end, an investor is better off holding a market index fund that invests in everything under the sun. It's not worth the cost and effort trying to find the undervalued stocks or high-growth mutual funds.
The book begins with two basic stock valuation models -- Firm Foundations and Castles in the Air. It goes on with a review of bubbles and manias throughout history, from more ancient history -- tulip craze in the Netherlands, the South Sea bubble in England, the 1929 Great Crash in the U.S. -- to the stock market anomalies from the 1960s, 1970s, all the way to the late 1990s dot com bubble. The book then introduces two basic camps of stock valuation analysis: Technical Analysis and Fundamental Analysis. It shows how both Technical Analysis and Fundamental Analysis fail to identify outstanding investment opportunities more than what an efficient market already provides. Not that you can't make money with Technical Analysis and/or Fundamental Analysis, but you can't make more money than what you already can with investing in a market index fund.
The chapter on behavioral finance is new for the 9th edition. It reviews how investors often become their own worst enemy when it comes to investing. The book "Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes And How To Correct Them" (ISBN 0684859386) covers this area in more details.
The final section of this book is the practical part. It gives practical advice on insurance, tax deferred accounts, saving for college, different vehicles for cash reserves, bonds, real estate, and stock mutual funds. Finally the book lists specific portfolio and fund recommendations for people in different stages of their lives.
Overall, this is a great book, a must read for every investor. It is however a little long and it requires some patience because it explains everything in details. If you want to cut to the chase and prefer a cookbook approach, I recommend the shorter book "The Random Walk Guide to Investing" (ISBN 039332639X) by the same author. The basic premise is the same in both books. The shorter "The Random Walk Guide to Investing" condenses everything into 3 basic points and 10 rules. It is about 200 pages long. The full book "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" is over 400 pages.

The Millionaire in You: Ten Things You Need to Do Now to Have Money and Time to Enjoy It Review

The Millionaire in You: Ten Things You Need to Do Now to Have Money and Time to Enjoy It
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At a time when the public is constantly getting slammed by hyped-up claims of how to become one-minute millionaires, it's refreshing to read a wise book like this.
I was a fan of Michael LeBoeuf's years ago when he wrote "The Greatest Management Principle in the World" which correctly stated that "what gets rewarded gets done." Since then a recently hyped book claims that "what is fun gets done" and we all are skeptical of that one, aren't we?
In this book, LeBoeuf writes a clear, enjoyable, and fundamentally-sound financial guide to wealth and happiness. His background in management, finance, and time-management gives him the mature credibility that we all need for such important life-decisions. Here is a man who is a financial-businessman first and an author second unlike so many others today.
I have a feeling that this book will not become a huge best-seller because of its somewhat understated manner. But that should not take away from its incredible long-term value and excellent writing.
I think this is a 6 star book in a field where best-sellers are really 3 star books. Buy this for yourself and anyone else you really care about. (Especially those who have plenty of money and little time to enjoy it.)
This book is a true financial treasure!

Wouldn't it be great to have the financial freedom to do whatever you want? Wouldn't it be better if you could also have the time to do it?Most of us would answer a resounding yes to those questions. For many people, the goal of making money is not the accumulation of wealth for wealth's sake; instead, the goal is to have enough money to do the things we're passionate about. Butvery few people have a lot of money and the time to enjoy it.Michael LeBoeuf knows how to obtain both—and he wants to teach you. LeBoeuf shows that there are only four things people need to know about money: how to make it, how to save it, how to invest it, and how to enjoy it. But most people never figure out how to do all four, although almost anyone can. The key to doing so lies in applying a simple principle called LeBoeuf's Law: Invest your time actively and your money passively. Based on LeBoeuf's Law, The Millionaire in You offers ten strategic choices designed to maximize your time and money: * Live the life you want instead of the life others expect.* Stack the odds in your favor instead of against you.* Be a supersaver instead of a big spender.* Increase the market value of your time instead of working long hours.* Do less better instead of trying to do it all.* Capitalize on the unexpected instead of being derailed by it.* Own the market instead of trying to beat the market.* Limit your losses instead of letting bad luck ruin you.* Listen to those who know instead of those who sell.* Do it now instead of regretting it later.LeBoeuf is living proof that this strategy can work. He is a former business professor who retired in 1989 at the age of forty-seven and is living off of his accumulated wealth. He didn't inherit a dime, and he didn't get serious about achieving financial freedom until he was thirty-five. This book is intended to help you do what he's done before you're too old to enjoy the money you've earned or invested.

I was originally skeptical when I received an early copy of Start Your Own Business. Part of my skepticism was the "ONLY startup book you'll ever need" banner on the front cover.
However, after living with Start Your Own Business for several months, and finding myself not only referring back to it, but also recommending it to family members and friends, I now realize the banner isn't a claim, but is a credible statement. The amount of detail inside, along with dozens of worksheets, makes this an ideal handbook to be kept within reach at all times.
The book's length, 700+ pages, also was an initial concern. Who has time to read 700+ pages? But, that's not a valid concern, for the same reason that the Physicians Desk Reference doesn't have to be "read" as much as "referred to" as needed. The detailed table of contents, which organizes chapters into 8 main sections, makes it easy to locate the information you desire.
Start Your Own Business is a great resource that brings everything together in one place for both startups and serial entrepreneurs.
