Traders, Guns and Money: Knowns and unknowns in the dazzling world of derivatives Revised edition (Financial Times Series) Review

Traders, Guns and Money: Knowns and unknowns in the dazzling world of derivatives Revised edition (Financial Times Series)

This is not another journalist musing on the financial world. This is not an academic explanation of how financial instruments work. It's something else entirely -- a rare inside glimpse into the world of derivatives by a literate professional who's been a handshake away (or closer) from the major events in the market. Das leavens a series of technical discussions about particular strategies with more entertaining glimpses into the culture the drives the deals. Although I have bones to pick with the book's episodic structure, I can't think of a better way to get a crash course in how the capital markets really work.

Key Management Ratios (4th Edition) (Financial Times Series) Review

Key Management Ratios (4th Edition) (Financial Times Series)

After working under finance for more than 10 years and graduated with both a bachelor's degree in Accounting and MBA in Finance, I have never come across a better book on financial ratios and analysis than this. What Ciaran Walsh wrote here is a classic - his approach has been very illuminating yet simple. Unlike other supposedly-easy-to-use ratio books written by CPAs and PhDs for the non-financial public, Ciaran explains the intracacies of the Balance Sheet, Income and Cash Flow statements in an easy-to-understand language, step-by-step with clear examples. I am sure business people who lack the knowledge in accounting or finance will find this invaluable. Another great feature of this book is that it includes industry-wide benchmark ratio figures for UK, USA, Japanese, etc companies for comparison. This will be especially useful for would-be MBAs, etc in their financial (and to some extent strategic) analysis of real-life case studies. Should be a compulsory companion book to the normal textbooks for those pursuing business or finance majors at both undergraduate and Master's level. Ciaran Walsh's masterpiece is really way ahead of the rest.........

Lower Your Taxes - Big Time : Wealth-Building, Tax Reduction Secrets from an IRS Insider Review

Lower Your Taxes - Big Time : Wealth-Building, Tax Reduction Secrets from an IRS Insider
Average Reviews:

I would have given it 4 and 1/2 stars but that wasn't an option. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars was that the book deals with small and home bases business issues and for real estate owners and investors. I am retired and thus, could only benefit from the real estate discussion. However, I did have a business before retirement.
I got this book after reading a great review in the Orlando Sentinal. This book would have saved me a bundle had I known about this information many years ago. It is cleverly written and has a lot of good information that I myself never heard from my accountant. I especially liked all the examples and tips that I found really useful in understanding the tax planning sections I also liked the elaborations, which provided some nice insights into why Congress passed various laws or on what to do about certain laws, with a great deal of clarity and specificity.
One very unsual feature that I found in this book that I never read in any other book was all the information that was provided on how to "audit proof" each and every tax planning strategy. I have used the J.K. Lasser guide in preparing my taxes, and I have never seen as much specific information on how to IRS bullet proof each deduction as Mr. Botkin provides.
Many financial books I read are rather shallow and lack a lot of the details necessary to implement what they are suggesting. Also, there seems to be a trend in financial and real estate books to serve as a giant advertisement for consulting services or for other books. This was NOT the problem in this book, which was frankly very refreshing.
Even as a retired person, I did, however, find the real estate section to be very useful. It will save me a bundle on some real estate mistakes that I didn't know about all these years.
Some reviewer noted that this book doesn't show you how to plan for the various tax laws. He must not have read the same book that I read because this book has a lot of specificity on what to do with each applicable law.
In short: I have given a copy of this book to my son and daughter. That should tell you what I think of the book.

Just-in-Time Accounting: How to Decrease Costs and Increase Efficiency Review

Just-in-Time Accounting: How to Decrease Costs and Increase Efficiency
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wish this book existed during the turbulent 80's and early 90's. Outmoded accounting system's, corporate reorganizations, high employee turnover, pressure to do more, faster with fewer resources. As a Controller, most of my biggest headaches involved the amount of time required to close the books. The original closing schedule was 10 days into the new period. Then it was 8 days. Then 5, then 4 days.
I can't even guess at the time I could have saved had I known the techniques the author demonstrates in Just-In-Time Accounting.
This is not your usual accounting tome, based on statistics and theory. This is real stuff. Built out of scar tissue, experience and real world solutions. They are not necessarily easy solutions but lasting solutions worth the effort to implement.
The content deals with streamlining some basic areas:
Cash - How to speed up the process but still keep control. Some very interesting ideas about corporate credit cards, using your bank and lock boxes to save time and money.
Sales & Accounts Receivable - Some good ideas about redundant approvals, and minimizing paper.
Inventory - With hundreds of physical inventories under my belt I can vouch for the absolutely necessity of doing what the author recommends. This area was one of my great bugaboo's. Nothing affects the balance sheet like an inventory error. This involves bills of material, suppliers, production records, and computer system's. This is a whole world in itself but the problem(s) and solutions are concisely described here. Get your inventory under control and the rest is cake.
Accounts Payable - Good stuff that took me a long time to discover on my own.
Cost Accounting - Mostly about why you need it and how it allows you to spot P&L problems before the month ends. This is one of the critical areas to review since it is necessary for faster closes. Get the major variances identified early in the month instead of wasting time digging it up 4 or 5 weeks after the events occurred. One comment I have is the need for weekly staff meetings to review what happened last week, how will it affect this week and what is being done about it. These meeting will point out problem areas for the controller to preempt delusional variance explanations after monthend.
Payroll - Many good ideas that work. I have used the barcode system's.
The Budget - You probably know about these already but there are some time-saving techniques to minimize constant re-casting and interations.
EDI - I'm not too familiar with this.
The Quick Close - It can be done. This tells you how and I can vouch for the soundness of the concept. I actually set a corporate-wide benchmark of 1-1/2 days using these techniques. In my view that is the real payoff since it is the realization and payoff of all the other hard work. Gives you more time to do yet another iteration of the budget.
Some of the examples apply to huge corporations but most of the principles are universal. I really can't find fault in this book. It tells the controller, in the real world, how to get your system(s) sorted out. I have seen many "instant pudding" or fad of the month cause real damage if it didn't really work. There is no downside to these techniques. This is motherhood and apple pie. You can't go wrong trying.

Praise for Just-in-Time Accounting

How to Decrease Costs and Increase Efficiency
Third Edition
"Most books on business accounting focus only on the accounting process?and never address the operational issues that impact it. Steve Bragg has delivered the rest of the story-the valuable insight and detailed information accountants need to help?them not only properly account for business activities, but to streamline and improve the overall process. Whether the practitioner is just starting up or is working with a well-established business, the information in this book offers real benefits to both."-Joanie C. Mann, Executive Vice President, InsynQ e-Accounting; Business Development Consultant, The Sleeter Group
"Mr. Bragg delivers another essential reference for every CFO's bookshelf. Just-in-Time Accounting is full of specific guidance you can use right now to save money, improve processes, and make you more effective."-Luella Schmidt, President, Fine Point Consulting LLC
"Just-in-Time Accounting is the 'go-to' accounting department transaction and streamlining reference. Process improvement begins here."-Geoffrey Garland, Controller, Staco Systems
"Just-in-Time Accounting is an incredible toolkit for streamlining and simplifying the accounting process. Practical but intelligent approaches to the whole accounting cycle make this book so effective and unique that it is a must-read for accounting clerk and CFO alike, regardless of the company and accounting department size or the industry you are in. -Shan Staka, MBA, Controller, PGP International
"One of the critical goals for the CFO is to develop a Lean Finance Factory that is efficient, on time, reliable, and accurate. Steve Bragg's Just-in-Time Accounting does exactly that and more. It not only teaches how to set up a system that delivers, but also teaches how to optimize it and, as such, is a great resource for both new and established CFOs. In today's world of information and data overload, this book is invaluable in teaching how to focus on the urgent and important."-Arif Iqball, Executive Director and Board Member, Avon Products Co. Ltd., Japan
"The underlying theme of the book is working in a consistent and efficient manner. Topics discussed and suggestions presented often have a 'lean' feel to them. These methodologies and practices lead to higher efficiency, the elimination of waste, and an increase in quality. The examples on Value-Added Analysis are prime examples of 'lean' thinking. In a time when global competition requires faster response times and lower prices, having an accounting system in place to accurately and effectively support business operations is extremely important. Operational efficiencies lead to lower operating costs and higher operating margins, and Just-in-Time Accounting helps identify many potential candidates for increasing efficiency."-Chip Nickolett, MBA, PMP, Director, Consulting Services-Americas, Ingres Corporation;former president, Comprehensive Solutions (U.S. and UK)

Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing: A Simpler and More Powerful Path to Higher Profits Review

Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing: A Simpler and More Powerful Path to Higher Profits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Activity-based costing was introduced in the 1980s to correct the inaccurate allocation of overhead from standard cost systems, but activity-based costing systems were expensive to build, complex to sustain, and difficult to modify, according to Robert Kaplan and Steven Anderson in this book. According to the authors, Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing is simpler, cheaper and more powerful.
The authors' costing model assigns resource costs directly to resource objects. Firstly, a capacity cost rate is calculated for each department or process, being the total cost of the resources used by the department or process divided by the time available from the employees conducting the work. Secondly, an estimate is made of the demand for resource capacity that each cost object requires. This makes it very easy to see how much it costs to serve a particular customer, or how much excess capacity there is in a department.
The value to a business in implementing a system of the type advocated by the authors will depend on the extent to which the activities of the business consist of standard processes and the extent of benefits gained from knowing the cost of serving individual customers. The system might be better suited to a manufacturing firm, in which the time taken for each process can be estimated accurately, than to a law firm, where the mysterious activities engaged in by attorneys might defy rational measurement.
In my opinion the main value of the book is in the first few chapters where the principles of the system are explained. The last half of the book contains a number of case studies which are likely to be of interest only to those who have businesses similar to one or more of those described in the case studies.
