Successful Meetings: How to Plan, Prepare, and Execute Top-Notch Business Meetings Review

Successful Meetings: How to Plan, Prepare, and Execute Top-Notch Business Meetings

This book could help anyone create a successful meeting. I've had meetings before where only 3 people show up on time (out of 15 invitees!) and I didn't know what to do. If I had read this book then, I would have known how to encourage prompt arrival prior to the meeting and wouldn't have had that problem. I really like the section on how to set up the room. At my office, most of the meeting rooms are already arranged, but if I took the time to rearrange the chairs, it would have a dramatic effect on the participation. Overall, this book provides a great overview for how to lead a meeting that gets results. It covers the basic logistical issues as well as tips for encouraging participation, leading brainstorming sessions, who you really need to invite (and not invite), and ideas for resolving personal conflicts between participants. Henkel provides checklists and forms to make the planning process easy and fool-proof. Also, the writing style is simple and easy to understand, including many lists that help clarify the topic. The section on icebreakers is very useful, especially if you are leading a meeting for people that don't always work together as a group. Often, these icebreakers can make for a more productive meeting since people are more likely to share their ideas with people they feel they know. I would recommend this book to anyone planning on leading a meeting (big or small). It will make a world of difference!

A study by MCI found that most professionals believe that over 50 percent of meeting time is wasted. More than 90 percent admit to daydreaming in meetings, 73 percent have brought other work, and 39 percent have fallen asleep. You might think that there would be fewer meetings. However, in the survey 46 percent said they attended more meetings than a year ago. Meetings cost time and money. Many meetings end with no results or outcome. How can you be sure you are using your time and money effectively? The answer: with proper training. Even MBA graduates have never had a course in how to plan, organize, and present an effective meeting. That is the subject of this new book which will teach the proper skills and training to get great results with every meeting, every time! You will learn the checklists for planning your meeting, setting the agenda, strategic planning, how the physical setting can be improved, how to properly open a meeting, handling difficult people and maintaining control, how to assess and evaluate your meetings, and the correct method to end a meeting. Good meetings do not just happen, they are planned and created.

How to Write Knockout Proposals: What You Must Know (And Say) to Win Funding Every Time Review

How to Write Knockout Proposals: What You Must Know (And Say) to Win Funding Every Time
Average Reviews:

Joseph Barbato has written a very useful and easy-to-read book on how to write foundation grant applications.
Rather than focusing on the nuts and bolts of proposals, he focuses on the essential lessons a good grant application writer must know or learn to be successful. Using the advice in this book will help the reader think and act like an experienced proposal writer.
The chapters are short, concise, and well-written -- a good mantra for crafting successful foundation proposals. Chapter titles include "Maps Help," "Needing Money Isn't Enough," and "Getting Unstuck." If you've written a lot of proposals and helped a lot of clients, you'll find yourself saying "Yes, people need to know that!" as you read the book.
I recommend the book highly. I wish that the author had addressed Federal and other governmental proposal writing as well, for two main reasons. First, while it's a great idea to solicit advice and counsel from a foundation's staff, it's between difficult and impossible to work with a government program officer while drafting a proposal. Working without this counsel requires the proposal writer to hone all the more closely to the written application guidelines -- a point not made as directly in the book as it might have been.
Second, the very brevity and conciseness valued by foundation program officers may actually work against a Federal or other governmental proposal being funded. The written guidance often mandates a certain amount of repetition between proposal sections, both in material to be covered and, occasionally, in the structure of the proposal itself.
These two small issues aside, I really like this book. One particularly effective use of it would be as a supplemental text when delivering grantsmanship training. The book includes much of the good advice a trainer would give orally while handing out written materials on the minutiae of the grant application. Reading "Knockout Proposals" is like having a grantsmanship coach at your side during the writing process.

The First-Time Grantwriters Guide to Success Review

I had to write a grant in order to keep my job. I was clueless, and bought this book sight-unseen because of the title. I couldn't have been happier with the step-by-step format, easy examples and plain language. Anyone, even me, can write a grant with this book. I wrote the grant and got funded! The examples in the book are great. I wrote my grant to cover art supplies for my therapy work. Now that I know how easy it is to write a grant, I've got plans to write more and expand our program.

Reliable Fundraising in Unreliable Times: What Good Causes Need to Know to Survive and Thrive (Kim Klein's Fundraising Series) Review

Reliable Fundraising in Unreliable Times: What Good Causes Need to Know to Survive and Thrive (Kim Klein's Fundraising Series)
Average Reviews:

This book, amazingly enough, bridges what fundraiser newcomers need to learn and what veterans need not to forget. No mean trick!
Kim Klein brings a clarity - and a calm voice in tough times - to creating a solid fundraising program to sustain an organization over the long haul. The book works for those facing an immediate crisis (with particular insights on managing that) and for those who want to get sharper as they look to equally or more challenging times ahead. Klein has been in the trenches, and it shows with solid frameworks and examples of how planning, implementing, and evaluating your fundraising from donors really works. I was re-inspired and reminded of the key factors in building a great donor program. And I was so glad that she included advice on how we can get past our own barriers to asking for money.
Different than "how to" fundraising manuals, Klein brings some unique gifts in this book, from her social justice framework and analysis of the economy to her practices of respect for and communication with donors. Her insights about improving boards, working with volunteers, and managing and learning through generational change are on point. Importantly, she urges us to respect our work as fundraisers and be mindful of our own sustainability, a factor in building a fundraising program that too often gets dropped.
I anticipate continuing to use this book as a key reference tool and one I can recommend to others with varying fundraising backgrounds. Anyone trying to build and organization can learn, and most importantly, implement from this book.

Praise for Reliable Fundraising in Unreliable Times
"Kim Klein has been a guru to social justice fundraisers for many years. She shows us by her efforts, and not just by her words, that it is possible to raise the money you need, no matter how marginal you feel or are considered in the larger society."—Rinku Sen, executive director, Applied Research Center, New York, New York; author, Stir It Up and The Accidental American
"With wisdom gleaned from over 30 years of experience, Kim Klein delivers her can-do message with wit, grace, and unabashed optimism—even in times like these. She taught us at JVP that there is still plenty of money out there; it's just unevenly distributed. Her consistent message: people give because we ask. Poking fun at money taboos, assuring us that fundraising is not that hard, Kim reminds us that the system is held in place by money: if we don't learn about it, we can't change it!"—Penny Rosenwasser, National Board, Jewish Voice for Peace, Oakland, California
"This book is an extraordinary combination of philosophy and how to, all aimed at helping nonprofits build a movement for social justice. Kim distills three decades of fundraising and organizing experience into a book that will be helpful for novice and veteran alike."—Lance Evoy, director, Institute for Community Development, Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec

Event planning never stops. This industry goes 24/7, 365 days a year. Planners work evenings, weekends, and holidays, often far away from their home base, organizing and running events that simply must go on, and go smoothly. Missing a critical deadline is not an option in the event planning field. Time management errors can cost a company a potential sale, lose them an existing customer, and damage their professional reputation.
Burnout and chaos are real risks in this hectic world of deadlines and multiple projects. Planners often find themselves working down to the wire against crushing deadlines and a mountain of obstacles that impede their progress. Too frequently, there is not enough time to get the job done properly, let alone to spend on personal or professional pursuits. And for many involved in the event planning field, there is the extra dimension of travel to factor in, juggling multiple projects on a daily basis across a multitude of time zones.
For smooth event implementation, and for business success, it is essential that planners know how to manage their own time as well as they manage an event. Time Management for Event Planners teaches readers how to successfully manage their workload, and do what matters most, when it matters most: Analyze and prioritize tasks. Structure your workload and your day for maximum performance. Identify red-flag activities that hinder productivity. Reduce stress-producing time crunches. Identify when extra help is needed, as well as how to delegate, outsource, and even partner with suppliers in crunch periods. Work with rather than against deadlines. Save time using technology. Manage multiple projects, even in multiple time zones. Balance your personal and professional life.
Whether you are an event planner, a hospitality professional, in public relations or other related fields, Time Management for Event Planners offers time-saving tips, techniques, examples, and expert insight that will help you get time on your side.

The Business of Special Events: Fundraising Strategies for Changing Times Review

The Business of Special Events: Fundraising Strategies for Changing Times
Average Reviews:

I purchased this book several years ago and I still refer to it whenever I am planning a special event. Freedman & Feldman provide a guide that literally lays the groundwork for conducting a successful special event (I hope that is not a Kent Dove title). Every subject from selecting the right event to post-event evaluation is covered in this resource.
Great pains are taken to illustrate the areas discussed and tips abound throught the book. I found the samples of event materials particularly useful in gaining an understanding of some of the principles that are illustrated.
The Business of Special Events is a must have edition to your library. A great resource for volunteers, chairpersons, staff and Board. I completly agree with George R. Reis, Editor, Fundraising Management when he says "When other writers discuss special events, they often quote Harry Freedman. This book is the final word on the subject."
