Most people who work with volunteers have no training in doing so (they've never taken a workshop or class on volunteer management), and recruiting and supporting volunteers is rarely their only responsibility (they may also be marketing managers, program directors, or even the President of the organization). The (Help!) I-Don't-Have-Enough-Time Guide to Volunteer Management gets these folks up to speed *immediately* on what needs to be in place to successfully involve and support volunteers. It was written long before the Internet became the essential tool that it is now, and even so, everything it talks about is instantly adaptable to online environments. This is the first book I recommend to anyone who is setting up a volunteer program, or wants to get a floundering program back on track.

Impact Your Business: An allegory of an entrepreneur's journey to clarity, cash, profit, family, and success Review

Impact Your Business: An allegory of an entrepreneur's journey to clarity, cash, profit, family, and success
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ken Kaufman's Impact Your Business is a business book that reads like a well-written short story. It is a must-read for small and mid-size business owners and non-financial executives alike.
Impact Your Business is an excellent example of financial best practices and the power these practices have to keep companies out of financial trouble or to rescue those already in trouble.
Meet Steve Loveland: Entrepreneur and business owner, now at risk of losing it all.
Many business owners and executives running SMBs will identify with the book's entrepreneur business owner, Steve Loveland. Steve has known the thrill of success, but is currently experiencing a dark depression over the possibility that his business won't survive. "When the allegory begins, he's overwhelmed, depressed, frustrated, and tired. The burdens he carries are heavy, and he can't seem to find a way to lighten his load."
Steve Loveland represents all the business owners whose businesses have outgrown their ability to manage all details and who don't have the clarity that financial reporting systems can provide to support the enterprise at its current level.
Finding clarity and reducing anxiety.
Clarity is a key word in Impact Your Business. The more clarity in all parts of the business, especially the financial elements, the less anxiety the business owner will experience. Ken's book is a journey to financial clarity.
Clarity is found in the persona of Jennifer, a finance executive who serves Steve as an interim CFO, and the IMPACT criteria she employs to provide peace of mind, better decision-making, and improved cash flow and profits.
IMPACT is an acronym. It represents the six criteria to which all reports and information an entrepreneur receives about the business' performance should adhere: Insightful, Meaningful, Precise, Accessible (both physically and intellectually), Comparative, and Timely.
Praise for Impact Your Business.
Anita Campbell, whose SmallBizTrends.com is one of the savviest and most respected websites dedicated to small businesses, writes, "As a business owner it's all too easy to wake up one day and find that your business and indeed your life-feel out of control. Impact Your Business give you the inspiration-and the nuts and bolts advice-you need to deal with the challenges and be the success you KNOW you can be."
More than business insight.
Impact Your Business is more than mere business insight; it is business wisdom and life wisdom woven together. In this regard, it is similar to other books that I've read and enjoyed. They include: The Art of Profitability by Adrian Slywotzky; Lessons From The Window Seat-Achieving Shared Vision in the Workplace by David Specht; Loving Monday-Succeeding in Business Without Selling Your Soul by John D. Beckett; and Gifts From Eykis-A Story of Self-Discovery by Wayne W. Dyer.

The Econometric Analysis of Time Series - 2nd Edition (London School of Economics Handbooks in Economics) Review

The Econometric Analysis of Time Series - 2nd Edition (London School of Economics Handbooks in Economics)

After spending over (...) bucks, I hoped to find it worth the price. I wasn't disappointed. This is really a good book for the mature guy, ie. one who has a comprehensive statistical background and who wants to know about econometric time series. Unlike the American authors, the British usually do not fill their books with theorem and proof. I think student will find it more easy to read if it is in a theorem and proof approach. Other than that, it is clearly written and contains a lot of material. It is well organized with very few printing errors. This should be the entry level book on econometric time series --though not for student. This is one of the best econometric/time series books I ever bought and read. It is (...) but worth it.

This new edition of A.C. Harvey's clearly written, upper-level text has been revised and several sections have been completely rewritten. There is new material on a number of topics, including unit roots, ARCH, and cointegration. The Econometric Analysis of Time Series focuses on the statistical aspects of model building, with an emphasis on providing an understanding of the main ideas and concepts in econometrics rather than presenting a series of rigorous proofs. It explores the way in which recent advances in time series analysis have affected the development of a theory of dynamic econometrics, sets out an integrated approach to the problems of estimation and testing based on the method of maximum likelihood, and presents a coherent strategy for model selection.A.C. Harvey is Professor of Econometrics at the London School of Economics.

How to License Your Million Dollar Idea: Cash In On Your Inventions, New Product Ideas, Software, Web Business Ideas, And More Review

How to License Your Million Dollar Idea: Cash In On Your Inventions, New Product Ideas, Software, Web Business Ideas, And More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying what this book is not. This book is not a detailed step by step guide to patenting. Nor a detailed legal guide to structuring a licensing agreement.
This book is a guide to help everyday people make money by designing and licensing nearly anything to companies looking for new or differentiated products. Mr. Reese offers up a clear and fresh perspective on the whole process from idea development to setting up meetings to contractual agreements. He covers how to patent & copyright, and guides you through when and how to contact an attorney.
Mr. Reese challenges the reader to become product developer, not an inventor. What this means is that if you can help companies make money and gain an edge on their competition, they will be more than happy to give you a percentage of the sales. There are lots of inventors that are good inventors but weak in the selling and licensing of their hard work. This book articulates what steps there are between an idea in your head and money in the bank.
This is by far the single greatest collection of practical wisdom I have found relating to everyday products and their licensing. My only complaint is that I wish I had discovered this book sooner.

The Barry Diller Story: The Life and Times of America's Greatest Entertainment Mogul Review

The Barry Diller Story: The Life and Times of America's Greatest Entertainment Mogul
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, for a business history of mergers, deals, movies, cable channels and so forth. It does give some glimpse into Diller's Jewish background and childhood, as well as, the vulgar and occasionally violent way he assaults his employees. However, it barely mentions his co-leadership of the notorious Velvet Mafia. Biographers of David Geffen, the long-time "associate" of Diller, are more forthcoming. Stephen Singular in "The Rise and Rise of David Geffen" discusses the Velvet Mafia and its bisexual media mogul leaders including Diller and Geffen. Tom King's "The Operator" flatly states the gay preference of Barry Diller. George Mair's book is well worth reading as is his biography of Si Newhouse, "Newhouse."

The Boomer Retirement Time Bomb: How Companies Can Avoid the Fallout from the Coming Skills Shortage Review

The Boomer Retirement Time Bomb: How Companies Can Avoid the Fallout from the Coming Skills Shortage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The graying of America is a not a new topic, but it is getting increasing attention now that the first baby boomers have filed for Medicare and are eligible for Social Security. Their sheer number - 76 million - dictate that, as in so many other spheres, they will make an impact, for better or worse, on work and retirement. Many boomers likely will want to remain in the workforce, either to earn money or to stay active, or both. While this will help ease the looming labor shortage, it also poses certain problems for companies that tend to see older workers as too expensive, too demanding or, simply, too old. Professors Donald L. Venneberg and Barbara Welss Eversole tackle this issue head on, but unfortunately their book reads too much like the academic research papers, statistics and surveys they often cite. While you might not expect a book about age demographics and workplace practices to be a page-turner, this research reveals an important story that will determine America's future. getAbstract considers this significant reading for human resources professionals and innovative CEOs who want to bring seasoned, talented people back on board - and keep them working.

The Boomer Retirement Time Bomb: How Companies Can Avoid the Fallout from the Coming Skills Shortage is a book for business leaders who want to stay ahead of the curve. A must-read for the 21st-century organization, it lays out challenges posed by a changing workforce and explains why we need to rethink assumptions about work and the workplace. More significantly, it provides practical, real-world strategies, best practices, and tactics for maximizing the opportunities that will accompany the coming demographic shift.

Asserting that employers who play their cards right can reap tremendous rewards by tapping into the wisdom, maturity, and judgment of older workers, the book covers such topics as recruiting and (re)training these valuable employees. It looks at increased workplace flexibility and other means of helping retain older workers, and it explores how organizations can treat older workers as assets. Finally, it provides suggestions for developing a workplace that welcomes and accommodates the needs of an intergenerational workforce, providing work-life balance for every employee.
