Financial Survival in Uncertain Times: *Prioritize Your Spending *Master Your Debt *Secure Your Future * Maintain Your Peace of Mind Review

(More customer reviews)I like that this book doesn't just offer the mechanics and how-tos of budgeting and financial planning, which really don't offer permanent solutions to spending problems. The author believes that financial problems are deeper. She argues that the core problems that drive our bad habits are emotions such as anger, boredom, depression, and low self-esteem. Just as emotions can drive our eating habits, they can drive our spending habits. For example, instead of going to the mall and spending money because we are angry with ourselves for tolerating someone's bad behavior, it is better to confront this person so that we get rid of the anger instead of getting rid of our money. Once we can identify what emotions cause us to do certain destructive behaviors, then we have a chance to fix them.
The other advice is pretty basic, and we all heard it before, such as putting money away toward your retirement account, establishing an emergency cash fund, eliminating credit card debt, and spending wisely. I enjoyed this book because it allows people to identify the problems not the symptoms.
