Writing his memoirs of WWII at age 86 the author has his readers marveling at his memory. The events he experienced were surely burned into his mind at the time. A twin engine bomber pilot the author was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire. Parachuting into the Italian Alps, he found himself in one of the worst winters seen in that part of Italy for a long time. He was found by friendly citizens who delivered him into the hands of the Italian Partisans and the British Special Forces who were fighting the German occupiers as best they could. The author spent the next five months fighting with those valiant men he found himself among, enduring waist deep snow, freezing winds, and enemy danger. The reader finds out how these brave men coordinated their ambushes and attacks with other Partisans, and how they managed to survive by buying local wine, food and clothes. Allied air drops supplied the fighters with explosives, ammunition, and other martial material to carry out their valuable behind the lines missions.
We all owe these men infinite thanks for what they endured for us and the free world in those trying times. Thank you Mr. Berry for what you did and for finally telling us about it. Wow, what a story! Very well written by an unsung hero! A must read.
