I've been a Note Broker/Cash Flow Specialist for 4 years now and I refer all of my trainees to this book. It's very detailed in defining the main debt instruments that dominate the industry and pointing you in the right direction of who to network with in order to generate business.
The one thing I disagree with is that the author claims you'll succeed part-time. Like any other profession, this one requires a lot of time and effort. And anyone who has experience brokering anything knows that good brokers make dozens, if not hundreds, of calls per day. If you like speaking over the phone and have the time, then this business will easily add a good $20-$40K to your annual income, possibly more.

Time Traps: Proven Strategies for Swamped Salespeople Review

Time Traps: Proven Strategies for Swamped Salespeople
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One sentence summary: Build an effective and efficient team, don't waste time on nonproductive tasks and do what you enjoy doing.
NOTE: You may think that this book is not for you since it specifically states that it is for "Swamped Salespeople," but when you think about it, we are all salespeople in one way or another.
As a small business owner and entrepreneur, I am always looking for ways to make more time. Of course, everyone knows you can't make more time, but as Todd Duncan and his book Time Traps demonstrates there are ways that you can make better use of your time. The key is task management.
Here is a one sentence summary of each of the chapters:
1) Chasing the Wind - Don't try to manage your time.
2) The Identity Trap - Determine how to spend less time "working" while still being productive.
3) The Organization Trap - Stop wasting time (e.g. checking email every 5 minutes)
4) The Yes Trap - Stop saying yes all the time.
5) The Control Trap (get ready for a reality check) - Build a team!
NOTE: At one time or another we have fallen into the Control Trap. Remember, the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem. :)
6) The Technology Trap - Use technology only if it makes you more efficient.
7) The Quota Trap - Quality over quantity.
8) The Failure Trap - Don't cry over spilled milk, learn from the spillage and pour better next time.
9) The Party Trap - "Success in never final." Winston Churchill
10) Freedom (the touchy, feely chapter I liked which you MUST read) - "If a deep voice inside is telling you there's something more, something better, something you're still longing for, something worth striving for and fighting for, then your heart is still beating and there is still time to do something about it." (Time Traps)
One other thing that I like about this book is that there are executive summaries for every chapter, so you can get a really good idea about Duncan's recommendations in an hour (or as long as it takes you to read through 9 executive summaries and the last chapter on Freedom).
This is another definite addition to the Corea Properties and Esenai libraries.
Gotta go continue building the team...

Productivity. It has been a buzz word in the business world for years. But despite our best attempts and countless self-help books, we still fall behind, work late, juggle our schedules, and become swamped. Time Traps addresses the most common misconceptions we have about time and our use of that time in the marketplace. Duncan has proven remedies for universal time troubles, and he shows readers how to set a schedule that works-not just some days but every day. With the principles in Time Traps, salespeople will see a rise in their sales as they experience a drop in their working hours.

No Time Marketing: Small Business-sized Steps in 30 Minutes or Less

I've been a marketing manager for my own small businesses and the largest corporations. I found this book to be a concise guide to help small business owners understand the purpose of marketing (hint: fame is NOT the goal). The sections on profiling your prospect base and developing your marketing message targeted for those prospects was simple and straight-forward. For me this was the most valuable section. It's too easy to guess what your customer's needs are and make up marketing messages off the top of your head that are totally ineffective. The book concludes with a good roundup of communication channels, advertising, tradeshows, internet, events, etc., and when to use them to deliver your message most cost effectively.
If you're an old pro, the book brings you back to basic principals, and if you haven't taken Marketing 101 in college and need to get a handle on marketing for your business ASAP, this is a good guide.

Author Dan Blacharski has done it well. He's written a book about one facet of business that has not been dealt with much recently, despite its critical importance to business success. Blacharski discusses all aspects of customer service for both web-based and conventional businesses, and he defines guidelines for establishing a business whose employees have the "customer service mindset" that, undoubtedly, leads to increased sales and profitability.
This book is chock full of advice and specific steps and procedures to follow to create a customer service-oriented environment that will set a business apart from the competition. It is an excellent treatment of the subject and will be invaluable to business owners, customer service managers and personnel, and sales personnel.

What a wonderful book this turned out to be. Not only did it give me an insight into what these individuals key strengths were, but the book also had enough personal information about them that you came away from the book feeling you knew more about them as individuals. The book starts off by making the assurance that great leaders are not only capable individuals, but they also have a desire to lead and chose to do so above all else. They are not just great because of smarts or drive, but because they want to be and work at it continuously. Thus the authors provide a book that is not a road map to greatness, but a review of these 25 leaders and what they do that has made them successful. It is a broad group of people and it is interesting that the traits highlighted in the book are also wide spanning. I had incorrectly assumed that the book was going to give me a simple list of the things I needed to get good at, no such luck.
The goal of the book is to help current day leaders observe proven and successful leaders to help them in coming better. The purpose is not so much to imitate their qualities but really to discover which attributes resonate with yourself and the cultivate those traits to expand and improve your leadership skills. There are so many good examples in the book that it is almost too much to take in with one reading, this is one of those books that you will find yourself highlighting and marking pages for further review. It comes as close as possible to a how to guide for personal improvement. Overall I not only enjoyed the book, but I learned a great deal from it. This book as so many helpful bits of info that all managers and business owners can learn from it. The book is not only worth the money, but also worth the time to read.

Funky Business Forever: How to Enjoy Capitalism (Financial Times) Review

Funky Business Forever: How to Enjoy Capitalism (Financial Times)
Average Reviews:

Move it.
Move it fast.
Move it faster.
Move it now.
These are the words, which summarize all the 245 pages of the book and energize them. Although casual in style and easy-to-understand in language, Funky Business is yet a profound and philosophical survey of the recent shift of basic values in social and business structures of the global society. Those, who understand the spirit and emotions of Mission Impossible II or Swordfish - Password Accepted, will definitely appreciate both the style and the message. For the `businessmen', who love ACID Jazz the message of the book is also easy to catch. The other guys may miss it out.
True, none of the business concepts, exposed in the book is new to the business community. But the authors created the brand new vision of the modern business through hy-phe-nation (as they describe the phenomenon themselves) of the latest ideas. Only such a weird combination of ideas helped them to produce the most beautiful (and harmonious?) description of a competitive advantage I ever learnt: "Competitive advantages weigh no more than the dreams of a butterfly". I understood the vitality of this phrase when I heard one of businessman in Russia (not oil, timber or caviar tycoon) telling, that he is "dedicated to the quality of idea in his business, because the highest quality of idea is the only thing impossible to be replicated immediately". And this gives him a competitive advantage. Once again: it was asserted not from the sends of California, but from the woods of Russia. What else should be said or done to prove the unambiguous victory of Forces of Funk throughout the world?
But above all, this is not the book to read, to learn and to forget. This is the ACTION book. It wakes up those who haven't yet understood that Future Just Happened. And it puts more pressure on those who are already awoken in order to move faster. My judgement is that Funky Business is a must-read for everyone in business: from an intern to the CEO. We already did it in our office. Every newcomer MUST read Funky Business in a bid to speak with his peers and bosses (very few, really) in the same language.
