Never Fly Solo: Lead with Courage, Build Trusting Partnerships, and Reach New Heights in Business
Average Reviews:

I'm an authority on sales training and have lost consulting deals over the years. But I have NO IDEA what it would mean to lose as a combat aviator. Think about it. Rob "Waldo" Waldman has to make the best decisions possible or he loses - he doesn't return from his mission.
What an outstanding resource Never Fly Solo is for anyone in the work world.
His thinking reinforces what I believe is the best way to distinguish good from bad business professionals. That is to recognize everyone makes either good or bad decisions. It gets no simpler than that.
Read here how an Air Force officer who flies is humbled to learn he's not the hotshot in the sky, but a part of a team that includes ground crew, mechanics, controllers, wingmen and more.
And from that experience flows wisdom that you can apply in business today.
One of my favorite stories is his description of "chair flying," actually simulating a mission in a chair prior to experiencing it in the cockpit. Mentally running every possible scenario, good and bad, can prepare you to succeed in life, as Waldman did in the air over 60+ combat missions.
I most highly recommend Never Fly Solo.

This book has been incredibly helpful to me. It walks you through exercises to determine your values, needs, responsibilities, priorities, and goals. Also includes a section on life purpose. It also has valuable tips for getting perspectives, calming, and prioritizing, and doesn't get long-winded or preachy. After completing the exercises and looking at the chart I'd made, I was able to see in a quick glance where I was on top of the things that are important, where I needed to make more of an effort, and where less. If you feel like your life is out of control, this book will help you get it back under your control.

Booster Breaks: Improving Employee Health One Break at a Time Review

Booster Breaks: Improving Employee Health One Break at a Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The American workplace is notorious for being overly stressful and nonconducive to a healthy lifestyle--even in the health-care sector where I have worked for more than 30 years. Many of my coworkers still drink numerous cups of coffee, smoke cigarettes, and eat fatty and surgary snacks to propel them through the workday and to meet project deadlines. So I have to admit my excitement when I discovered this evidence-based book on booster breaks. Although the book targets organizational managers, the healthy ways recommended for using 15-minute work breaks should be welcomed by anyone seeking to reduce work-related stress and improve productivity.
Tied to a computer in my work as a medical editor, I long ago learned the value of physical movement during the workday. However, I never thought of using other break activities, such as meditation, relaxation techniques, and rhythmic breathing. With so many break activities to choose from, everyone should find the type of break activity that works best for them should they decide to take solo breaks or breaks with their coworkers. The Appendix also offers other resources for anyone who wants to design his or her own booster break activities.
Overall, the book is concise and well written. I would recommend it to anyone who is seeking a novel approach to health promotion and stress reduction.

This is a very readable book. The chapters are short and I find they make me want to act on the great suggestions made. Each chapter provides actions you can implement to get the results you desire. There is no question what to do to be successful.... the only question is how fast you're willing to do it. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed and valued this book.
It was so useful to me, I wanted to be able to take it everywhere, so I bought it on my Kindle, too!!

Hard Goals : The Secret to Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be Review

Hard Goals : The Secret to Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Murphy first introduced the idea of HARD Goals in his last book, Hundred Percenters. I was sold when the material was covered there---in just a single chapter, and as one way to inspire better employee performance. But for the past year, I've wanted more... a deeper focus on the thinking behind HARD Goals. Greater exploration into how to better put HARD Goals into effect. With this new book, I got exactly what I wanted.
The thing I like most about Murphy (I'm on his organization's email list, so I follow him pretty closely), is that I never feel like he is trying to bluff me into buying his stuff. He either has hard facts to back up his ideas and methodologies, or you don't hear about it. And I consider myself a pretty savvy skeptic, so believe me; I'm always on the lookout for the smoke and mirrors. There're none here.
HARD Goals firmly supports itself with the backing of brain science. Murphy grabbed onto some of these key scientific findings, and used this new knowledge to come up with ways to what he calls "outflank" the brain. Outflank... kind of an unusual word, so I looked it up to make sure I knew what it really meant. `To gain a tactical advantage over (a competitor, for example)' is the definition I think best applies.
When it comes to goals, my competitor is procrastination. I don't even want to think about how often I have failed to even start my most heartfelt goals; even though I constantly dream about how great life would be if only I achieved them. I want it, but it's like there's a brick wall between me and making it happen. I finally know how to bust through that wall.
I've had really good success this past year applying what I learned about HARD Goals from the first book. I lost 20 lbs, and I no longer buy into the myth that it's `impossible' to lose weight as you get older (I'm 46). I also started a real exercise program 9 months ago, and I've stuck to it--- like glue. I don't have luxuries like fancy gyms or private chefs and trainers. I just switched the way my brain was approaching these goals, and suddenly I was able to do what for so long I could not. I've also been able to better get what I want professionally by applying HARD Goals. I can't wait to see what I can create with the wealth of information this new book dispenses.
SMART Goals are done. As Murphy says, think back to a time when you were so fired up to achieve success that nothing got in your way. Then ask yourself if that goal fit the SMART criteria, especially regarding realistic and achievable. If I had stopped to consider factors like those in the face of my great achievements, I would have quit before I got started. Because as far as I knew, at that moment, what I wanted to do was impossible, at least for me.
That's what HARD Goals are, the tough challenges that make us learn and stretch and grow to become what we didn't know we could be. The kinds of goals that make us say "I'm better than before." And you don't get that by sticking to the realistic and the achievable, you absolutely have to push for more. Again, as Murphy says, we've all done the impossible before, and we can do it again.
HARD Goals shows you how to generate that same kind of energy around all your goals. You don't just have to wait around until a goal finally sweeps you off your feet. You can outflank your brain and gain a tactical advantage over whatever it is that might hold you back from success. It's kind of fun to mess with the brain on this level...some days I swear I can hear the snap, crackle pop of my neurons firing off as I put my HARD Goals into action.
My vote is: buy the book. It's a great and informative read, and if you, or someone you know, is about to embark on a tough New Year's resolution, you can't afford to pass it by. Interestingly, this is Murphy's first book (that I've read) that boldly steps outside the workplace. There's still a ton of information and examples about HARD Goals at work, but just as many appear on a personal level--- like dieting, time management, health, exercise and finances. Oh, and wait til you see how Murphy turns a well-known standard of economic theory into a clever way to make your brain believe any goal, financial or otherwise, is so required that your world will end if you don't achieve it. That's when the motivational juices really get flowing.
It's really good stuff, and it's really different from anything you've read before about goal setting. If you've got goals you want to achieve, you want this book.

Winning in life and unparalleled fulfillment."Lyle Nelson, four-time Olympian and author of Spirit of Champions

HARD Goals gives you the cutting-edge science to engage every employee in pursuing and achieving extraordinary goals. No more procrastination, foot-dragging, or giving up. With HARD Goals, your organization will achieve astonishing results. Every CEO, manager, and employee needs to read this book!"Kevin M. Andrews, President, SmartBen

About the Book:

Want to increase sales? Get promoted? Change the world? There's a goal for that . . .

Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, the school teacher next door who amassed a million-dollar fortune . . . Did these people succeed because they were more motivated or because they were more disciplined? The answer to both questions is yes—but not in the ways you might think. Anyone can achieve extraordinary things. The secret is setting goals that test the very limits of your abilities.

In Hard Goals, Mark Murphy, the acclaimed author of Hundred Percenters, explains the science behind getting from where you are to where you want to be in your career, business, and life.

Leadership IQ, Murphy's top-rated leadership training consultancy, studied nearly 5,000 workers from virtually every field and found that extraordinary goals—the kind that got America to the moon and back, developed the iPod, created nanotechnology, and helped individuals overcome tremendous personal adversity—stimulate and engage the brain in ways that are profoundly different from the goals most people set.

Research conducted for this book revealed that people who set Hard goals are up to 75 percent more fulfilled than people with easy goals. In these pages, Mark Murphy explains how success, and the satisfaction it brings, comes from knowing how to set goals that are:
Heartfelt—have an emotional attachment, "scratch an existential itch."
Animated—motivated by a vision, that movie that plays over and over in your mind.
Required—imbued with such a sense of urgency that you have no other choice but to start acting on them right here, right now.
Difficult—the greatest achievements come from the toughest challenges—but they also leave you feeling stronger, smarter, and more fulfilled.

People set goals all the time, but the majority end up unfulfilled or abandoned. With all the challenges facing us today, we could use a little more achievement.Hard Goals can help us get there by offering the hard science and practical techniques to conquer procrastination and unlock your brain's potential for realizing your goals.

Eat That Frog 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time Review

Eat That Frog 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Eat that Frog is an excellent motivational book. The complaints I see by most here are along the lines that there's nothing new in this book. To me, there's nothing new in MOST self help books. After all, we each know that the way to stop procrastinating is to just do what we dread, the way to lose weight is to burn off more calories than we consume, the way to keep house is to clean and organize on a regular basis, and so on. What we seek is some motivation and some reasoning for doing what we dislike doing.
Brian Tracy gives this motivation and reasoning. This is a short, fast read. As the author says, it doesn't go into all the psychology of procrastination; rather, it gets right to the action. Brian Tracy covers such things as determining priorities, delegating and eliminating some tasks, knowing what's okay to procrastinate about, and whether to tackle your "frog" (your big task that will lend the greatest results) first or a lesser priority task.
The result is a clear, concise book that is helpful and shows that by regularly eating your frogs first, you develop a habit that makes it easier to accomplish more than the average person and do it with increasingly less effort. An excellent, worthwhile book that you will likely refer to time and time again.

There's an old saying that if the first thing you do in the morning is to eat a live frog, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that it's probably the worst thing you'll do all day. Eat That Frog! takes this saying as a metaphor for tackling the most challenging task of your day - the one you are most likely to procrastinate on, but also probably the one that will have the greatest positive impact on your life. Bestselling author Brian Tracy shows how successful people don't try to do everything, but instead focus on the most important tasks. With three vital rules of effective personal time management: decision, discipline and determination, and twenty-one practical and doable steps to help you stop procrastinating, this book will appeal to anyone who wants to get more of those important tasks done - today!--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Peaks and Valleys: Making Good And Bad Times Work For You--At Work And In Life Review

Peaks and Valleys: Making Good And Bad Times Work For You--At Work And In Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first Spencer Johnson book I read was Who Moved My Cheese. This book follows the same formula. The reader is told a story. At points in the story the author stops and explains a self-help message, learned by one or more characters, which is relevant to the reader. A series of self-help messages (which are relevant individually or as a group) lead to a conclusion about how to make life better.
This story focuses on a man who is troubled by life. A friend tells him a story about a man, also troubled by life, who lives in a valley and makes a trek up a peak to see a wise man. The man also makes other treks up and down other peaks and valleys.
In this story the man learns that peaks and valleys are part of life. The key to living a richer life is how you perceive and address the peaks and valleys and what you learn while you are traversing the peaks and valleys.
I have found the information in Spencer Johnson's books often times to be intuitive. For instance one message in this book is "You can have fewer bad times when you appreciate and manage your good times wisely."
Yet Spencer Johnson also addresses truths that I often want to forget. One message is "The pain in a valley can wake you up to a truth you have been ignoring."
Finally Spencer Johnson always manages to come up with a couple of things I had not really thought about. For instance one message is "The path out of a valley appears when you choose to see things differently."
As mentioned these messages correspond to events in the story. Spencer Johnson is most effective when the events in the story lead the reader to the message. In fact, when he is at this best the author does not even need to state the message because the reader will get the message without having to read it.
If you liked Spencer Johnson's works before you will be pleased with Peaks and Valleys. If you have never read anything by him and you are looking for a story which leads you to key truths about life, without a bunch of analysis, then you will enjoy this work.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Who Moved My Cheese?, a brilliant new parable that shows readers how to stay calm and successful, even in the most challenging of environments.A young man lives unhappily in a valley. One day he meets an old man who lives on a mountain peak. At first the young man doesn't realize that he is talking to one of the most peaceful and successful people in the world. But in the course of further encounters and conversations, the young man comes to understand that he can apply the old man's remarkable principles and practical tools to his own life to change it for the better. Spencer Johnson knows how to tell a deceptively simple story that teaches deep lessons. The One Minute Manager (co-written with Ken Blanchard) sold 15 million copies and stayed onthe New York Times bestseller list for more than twenty years. Since it was published a decade ago, Who Moved My Cheese? has sold more than 25 million copies. In fact there are more than 46 million copies of Spencer Johnson's books in print, in forty-seven languages—and with today's economic uncertainty, his new book could not be more relevant. Pithy, wise, and empowering, Peaks and Valleys is clearly destined to becomeanother Spencer Johnson classic.

Making Change Happen One Person at a Time: Assessing Change Capacity within Your Organization
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Making Change Happen" is good, as far as it goes. The discussion of people and their ability to fit in a changing organization and promote the change is good. If you are buying this book to guide in change planning and implementation, it provides some good groundwork information. But it is not sufficient, by itself. This author uses supervisors' assessments of "change readiness", etc.. Other books and articles provide more rigorous and objective testing of staff change readiness, etc. The author also does not deal with the morale and organizational impact of forced reassignments and "outplacement" (lay-offs or firings). He even strongly implies that the staff that remain will have higher morale during the process. Obviously, he is a consultant. He has never been close to the workforce in an organization that is in the midst of an organizational change process, or one that has had lay-offs or firings in the proceeding months or years. Nor has he read the research on how those impact morale, retention of business knowledge, and, ultimately, productivity. In that sense, this book reminds me of the Hammer and Champy "Reengineering" books of the last decade; pregnant with potential, but lacking a connection with critical components of the realities of what is happening in the corporation.

If Sun Tzu had been an entrepreneur this book would have been written centuries ago.
Using a concise war-winning paradigm, Warden and Russell have successfully captured the essence of designing a business strategy that will work every time. There are three things that make this book a proverbial "must read."
- It cuts to the chase by explaining what a business strategy needs to provide to everyone in the organization and does this in way that everyone from the mail clerk to the CEO can understand.
- It proves the KISS principle doesn't have to produce a "Business for Dummies" approach.
- You can start reading the book on Monday, finish it on Tuesday, begin to institute change on Wednesday, and by Friday be making a difference.
Frankly, I think it's the best book I've read since "Thriving on Chaos" by, Tom Peters.

For over two decades, Spencer Johnson has been inspiring readers with his simple yet profound stories of the challenges we face in these times of unprecedented change. The Present is an engaging story of a young man's journey to adulthood, and his tireless search for The Present, a mysterious and elusive gift he first hears about from a wise old man. This Present, according to the old man, is the most valuable gift a person can receive. Why? Because it is the one thing that doesn't change in changing times. As the young boy becomes a man, he grows disillusioned with his work and his life. So he returns to ask the old man to help him find The Present. The old man responds, "Only you have the power to find The Present for yourself." Heeding the old man's advice, the young man embarks on a worldwide search for this magical gift that remains unchanging in a changing world, and holds the secret to personal happiness and lifelong success. It is only after the young man has searched high and low and all but given up his relentless pursuit that he discovers The Present—and all of the promises it offers. Like the young man, you may find that it is the best gift you can ever give to yourself — and to those you care about.

No matter how you organize it, change it or rearrange it, there are only going to 24 hours in a day and 168 hours in a week. So what are you going to do? Perhaps it's not just about organizing. Perhaps you need to take a step back and learn HOW to organize.

I've been a Note Broker/Cash Flow Specialist for 4 years now and I refer all of my trainees to this book. It's very detailed in defining the main debt instruments that dominate the industry and pointing you in the right direction of who to network with in order to generate business.
The one thing I disagree with is that the author claims you'll succeed part-time. Like any other profession, this one requires a lot of time and effort. And anyone who has experience brokering anything knows that good brokers make dozens, if not hundreds, of calls per day. If you like speaking over the phone and have the time, then this business will easily add a good $20-$40K to your annual income, possibly more.

Millionaire Moms: The Art of Raising a Business and a Family at the Same Time Review

I purchased the book "Millionaire Moms: The Art of Raising a Business and a Family at the Same Time" last fall at one of Joyce's book-signing events. I read the book from cover to cover it less than one day; I could not put it down. Joyce is very funny, yet articulate in making her point. Any woman can be financially independent through motivation, conquering fear and learning how to juggle family and business. She interviews other millionaire moms who tell their story, so you can read first-hand how other moms besides Joyce have turned ideas into a business success. The book inspired me so much, I decided to go ahead with one of my business ideas and invented a new product which I launched early in 2010.

Time Warrior: How to defeat procrastination, people-pleasing, self-doubt, over-commitment, broken promises and chaos

Most reviews I write, which aren't many, tend to be in enthusiastic support of an item, simply because I just don't take the time to write something unless I REALLY feel that it's a great item. (Once in a while I'll take time to write a negative review but since there's already enough negativity to go around, I try to avoid it!).
Well, this review is no different - this is an excellent tool - not a book, not a "read", etc. It's a tool that I have personally used to get "unstuck" from the habit of continuous email checking, internet ADHD sydrome, pausing to play scrabble on my iPhone every 5 minutes, you name it! With short, easy to digest chapters, I was able to return to a place of calm, focusing on a single item until it's completed, then move on to the next one with ease. Yes, I still take a pause every once in a while to do some of those old activities, but they're a choice and not a distraction and it feels good to know that I accomplished my necessary items first, the ones that propel me toward my goals.
So, simply put, this is an enthusiastic review of a great tool - one that you should find as useful as I did if you'll take its advice seriously and put it into action.

Time Warrior is a revolutionary, non-linear approach for dealing with time, as bold as it is fresh and new. What is non-linear time management?Non-linear time management is a commitment to action in the present moment. It's looking at a task and choosing NOW or 'not now." If it's not now, it's got to be NEVER, or placed in a time capsule that has a spot on the calendar and therefore out of the mind. The mind must remain clear and empty of all future considerations. In non-linear time management there is no line extending from my mind into the future. No tapeworm of unfinished business coming out of my body.Non-linear time management is best expressed by Elvis Presley when he sings, 'It's now or never, come hold me tight."The old-fashioned time management programs had a huge, burdensome focus on the future. The line of tasks stretched out forever into the future. It was fear-based and it was overwhelming to have so much of a future to carry around with you.It resulted in massive, pathological procrastination. Everything got put off in the name of perfectionism. Nothing was bold or reckless anymore. Therefore there wasn't much astonishing success happening for the world-weary practitioner. But when Chandler teaches people to go non-linear, a strange thing happens. New life and energy come in. When they open their emails they don't get to save them for later. They have to deal with them if they open them. Like little attackers in a computer game, there is no longer anywhere to hide. Life becomes a great game and everything is handled right now on the spot. All fear comes from picturing the future. Putting things off increases that fear. Soon we are nothing but heavy minds weighing down on weary brains. Too much future will do that.Only a warrior's approach will solve this. A warrior takes his sword to the future. A warrior also takes his sword to all circumstances that don't allow him to fully focus.Chandler is a coach by profession, and when he works with a client who is 'overwhelmed" with too much to do and not enough time to do it he will often ask them to give him an example of one of the things they are burdened by every time they think about it. The client will give him an example and they will do that thing right now. The client is amazed. The only thing missing in this client's life was a bias for action. Most people think too much. Then they compound that problem by studying the feelings that come up for them as a result of that thinking. All this time that they spend thinking and feeling they could have been taking action. In a non-linear way. Linear time starts with your birth and ends (at the end of the line) with your death. Along that long linear line it's just one damn thing after another. Then the lights go out. What was the point?Non-linear time management stops all that weary nonsensical treading on the road to one's destiny.Rather than inching along horizontally you must simply rise up. Your life can now become vertical. Now you don't postpone challenges, you rise to them. You become a warrior. And it works. How, exactly, does it work? This book will show you exactly how it works.
