What's great about this book is that it goes straight for jugular of anyone who can't stop themselves from making predictions about the markets. Like those chart reading traders who think they can actually forecast the market direction. Prediction with charts is a losing game. If 100 traders stare at a chart, they come up with 100 different subjective interpretations. This book may actually make them realize that pretending they have unique skill through years of ink blot study is just blowing smoke.
Better yet this book is not based off hypothetical testing or experiments in what may work. It uses real performance data from guys who have traded for decades as trend followers. If you worship technical indicators as "it" don't read this book unless you want a hard cold splash of reality. If you worship technical indicators as some market tonic -- go ahead -- but don't forget the best in the business do nothing of the sort.
One of my favorite parts is the description of the hundreds of millions of dollars trend followers won at the same time Long Term Capital Management was imploding and losing their shirts. Wow, what an example of risk and volatility in stark terms.
But ultimately it is the no holds barred condemnation of fundamental analysis that sticks with me. Trend followers don't waste their time trying to understand forces influencing market participants (fundamental analysis) They care about the market price and what they should do in response to market price movement. Isn't that a goal for all of us? Round of applause for the diligent research and clear writing.

How did trader, John W. Henry, start out as a farmer and end up a billionaire and owner of, first the Florida Marlins and now, the Boston Red Sox? How do traders like Bill Dunn, Ed Seykota and Keith Campbell continually pull profits in the hundreds of millions from both bull and bear markets? The answer is that they are trend followers. Trend following is the only strategy to consistently make money in the markets. Leading expert Michael Covel reveals the underground network of these little-known traders and hedge fund managers who have practiced trend following for years. He pulls back the veil on their strategies by introducing the basic concepts/techniques of trend following such as why the market price contains all the information a trader needs. Covel rigorously reviews and analyzes years of detailed performance data to prove without question that trend following works. He breaks down trend following strategies including how to make volatility work; how to control risk; and how to make successful trading decisions "from the gut."Covel shows why trend following is ideal for individual traders who self-manage their portfolios or for the individual investor searching for a new type of investment advisor.Along the way he debunks an immense amount of misinformation/failed advice from pros who ought to know better. This timely book capitalizes on today's massive move back into the markets and investors' renewed determination to find strategies that really work.

Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead: What Every Business Can Learn from the Most Iconic Band in History Review

Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead: What Every Business Can Learn from the Most Iconic Band in History

This was a weird weekend; by 10:00 AM Friday, I had received a copy of Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead in the mail, and had borrowed a "Fast Read" copy of Jonathan Kellerman's latest Alex Delaware mystery, Deception, at the library.
I read a little of each on the way home. Both books engaged me on the first page, as books by David Meerman Scott and Jonathan Kellerman tend to be. Both quickly "hooked" my interest.
However, faced with the choice of what to read, I finished Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead first. I became engrossed in the back story, or explanation, of the reasons a rock group I had long observed took the steps it did, and how it benefited their career and solidified their position.
It helped that I also resonated with the author's first-hand stories of attending numerous Grateful Dead concerts and visiting the Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California at Santa Cruz. The photographs provided atmosphere, the anecdotes provided story, and the book's tight writing and strong organization contributed to a "high momentum" and fascinating reading experience...a "high-momentum page-turner" that teaches fundamental marketing lessons and values.
Because the ideas come through so clearly, Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead begs the question: "Why doesn't every business act like the Grateful Dead?" Why don't all businesses "Put Fans in the Front Row?" Why don't all businesses "Embrace Technology" and "Cut Out the Middleman?" Why don't all businesses "Bring People on an Odyssey?"
The lessons are obvious, and--most important--they are reinforced with concrete examples of how other other businesses far removed from rock and roll have profited from the same marketing ideas. Sidebars and summaries emphasize the lessons and organize them for easy reference.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I was reading a copy sent by the publisher. BUT, receiving a book doesn't mean you have to read it! I read it because it's a great book, and I ended up sending two copies to long-time clients in Seattle. And, only after I finished Marketing Lessons, did I return to my Jonathan Kellerman mystery.

Work 2.0: Building The Future, One Employee At A Time Review

Work 2.0: Building The Future, One Employee At A Time

Bill Jensen has researched how we all work for more than a decade. I know: I participated in part of his study ten years ago.
Here's what I've learned both from his two books and his research...
* HIS SKILL is as an aggregator, simplifier, and clarifier.
I laugh at reviews that are obviously searching for the next big thing:
("Nothing new here. So-and-so said that back in...") He openly covers ideas that others cover. But he integrates them all together, and finds the patterns and overlaps between dots that we couldn't otherwise connect.
* HE IS PASSIONATE about respect for the individual.
Work 2.0 and Simplicity are not about *business* success. They are about people issues, and finding more ways for each individual to succeed.
He's holding leaders accountable for employees' time, energy, and
passion that they waste. When he wrote "It is no longer acceptable to say that there's *work* and there's *life* and it's up to employees to balance the two," he was taking a stand for all the thousands of people he's heard from during his research. Again, I was one of those he stood up for.
* HE ASKS tough questions.
Do not buy his books unless you're willing to look in the mirror. While he includes checklists and writes in a very accessible way, he is definitely not about mice-moving-cheese, or fish-throwing, or Five Steps to Eternal Bliss. He's seen our personal foibles and the stupidity in our workplaces, and he tells the truth.
* HE POKES a finger in the eye of those in power, then winks at us.
* HE RESPECTS his readers.
Sure, he gets some things wrong. I don't agree with all his findings or recommendations. But at the end of the day, he respects us to think more deeply and come up with better solutions because he played truth-teller and dots-connector. He sees his role as witness, reporter, clarifier, and provocateur. He figures we're smart enough to figure out the rest.
For me, that's more than good enough.

This is a very readable book. The chapters are short and I find they make me want to act on the great suggestions made. Each chapter provides actions you can implement to get the results you desire. There is no question what to do to be successful.... the only question is how fast you're willing to do it. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed and valued this book.
It was so useful to me, I wanted to be able to take it everywhere, so I bought it on my Kindle, too!!

I attended a group HR and Training strategy session in LA last week and Michael Sabbag was the presenter. There were about 40 of us in the room and we each received a copy of the book. I couldn't put it down! Highly recommend for HR & Training professionals. Great tips and tricks in here too!

Mr. Adair appears to be very knowledgeable in this area, but I found this book to be a too elementary. The strategies he suggests were very broad concepts that you could find in any book on this subject. What I liked about it was the section that he added to the end of each chapter titled "Key Concepts"; these helped me understand his important points.

I had the opportunity to be one of the first Accountability School students and have read this book and used Monroe Mann's program first hand. I can tell you that this no nonsense and easily manageable system does in fact work. By using the practical and doable techniques that Monroe has outlined in detail, I have been more successful finding the time to accomplish my goals, aka "strives", than I had ever thought possible.
I highly recommend "Time Zen" to anyone looking to find the time to accomplish anything!
