I have been talking a lot about "agility at a personal level" -- both at conferences on software development and within organizations. I was really intrigued with this book and looking forward to seeing it in print. The text is imminently readable and the drawings and mind maps are captivating. Researchers are telling us that drawing and doodling are the best pathways to our memories--Staffan takes full advantage of this! He describes specific techniques that help us achieve the grander goals of: becoming more productive, increasing focus, creating a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day, cutting down the stress of wasted multi-tasking. I love it! I hope you find it's the perfect book to start out the new year!
I am a Kindle fan, but the drawings in the text version make it worth having a printed copy. And don't forget to buy a timer! Yes, a Pomodoro (tomato) is good, but I bought a lady bug :-)!

Work Less, Do More: The 14-Day Productivity Makeover Review

Work Less, Do More: The 14-Day Productivity Makeover
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I learned a new word! Distractionistis... (Or is it a new disease?)
In Work Less, Do More: The 14-Day Productivity Makeover, Dr. Jan Yager has put together a program that, if strictly followed, will allow the reader to get into the groove of getting out of having a cluttered life. When I first got hold of Jan Yager's book the thought that was on my mind was "Now this is something that I will be able to use for my work - it is something that I badly need..." After reading the book though it is clear to see that stretching your time and not getting things done is holistic. You cannot simply work on this at the office and expect to have more time. Habits have to be developed, goals have to be set, plans have to be made and prioritization (sometimes radical prioritization) has to take place.
The author adds several productivity tools throughout the book, some of them are diagnostic exercises and some of them are meant to be used daily. To be quite honest I normally skip these tools when using self help books but then I decided to just keep my phone log, one of the first tools in the book, for one day. It became glaringly apparent to me just the work that needed to be done to get this part of my life under control. And from there I went on and tried other tools as well. Batching work. Working on my "internet addiction" and the author describes it. Putting more time into advance planning rather than just diving into my work. I swear this is like when you haven't been to the gym in five years and then you decide to jump right in to two full aerobic work outs per day!
As I mentioned earlier, Jan doesn't leave the productivity at the office. She also makes sure that you are tending to your family, romantic partner, children and others in your social spheres. Some of the hardest part of the "work out" Jan Yager's book puts you through is coming to terms with the parts of your life that you will have to put on the back burner or even eliminate. I personally have lots of work to do in this realm and can't find any easy way to get through this. But I suppose the mantra should be "no pain, no gain!" I also have had major problems with delegation, which Jan Yager puts in high stock.
I have put recurring tasks in my Outlook on my computer just so I can revisit Jan Yager's pointers in the future and to make sure that the new muscles I have stretched haven't gone flabby again. I think I will keep at it until I wouldn't be embarrassed to let Jan Yager see my desk...

Think And Grow Rich: The Success Masterpiece Of All Times, 236 Pages (2009 Edition)
Average Reviews:

Books on similar subjects appear to arrive several at a time. In addition to this particular work, I have another three all with the word `Millionaire' in the title (two very different works both called "How to think like a Millionaire" and one called "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind). No!, they do not show you how to go out and win the lottery or obtain the secret of some other get-rich-quick scheme. If they did, I would describe them all as rubbish and demand a refund from the publisher.
Leaving those other works aside, this book shows you how to look after and make the most of what you have. My father always used to decry the fact that "money always goes to money." Of course, if you have a lot and are getting a decent rate of interest, then, of course, it does. But I also remember a young married soldier from many years ago who owned a very up-market car, a nice towing caravan, a small removals lorry and had the finest furniture in his married quarter. Those vehicles were for rent and his fellow soldiers (and officers) made the most of them. I remember him very clearly because everything he achieved was both legal and on an under-paid private soldier's wage and he owed no money to anyone. His secret was in making extra money and looking after all his income with the greatest care.
And that is what this book is all about. It requires the reader to adopt a very different attitude towards money and expenditure and it works. Or at least it can - if you are prepared to learn the lessons and put them in to practise.
And I wish you well.
NM

Work 2.0: Building The Future, One Employee At A Time Review

Work 2.0: Building The Future, One Employee At A Time
Average Reviews:

Bill Jensen has researched how we all work for more than a decade. I know: I participated in part of his study ten years ago.
Here's what I've learned both from his two books and his research...
* HIS SKILL is as an aggregator, simplifier, and clarifier.
I laugh at reviews that are obviously searching for the next big thing:
("Nothing new here. So-and-so said that back in...") He openly covers ideas that others cover. But he integrates them all together, and finds the patterns and overlaps between dots that we couldn't otherwise connect.
* HE IS PASSIONATE about respect for the individual.
Work 2.0 and Simplicity are not about *business* success. They are about people issues, and finding more ways for each individual to succeed.
He's holding leaders accountable for employees' time, energy, and
passion that they waste. When he wrote "It is no longer acceptable to say that there's *work* and there's *life* and it's up to employees to balance the two," he was taking a stand for all the thousands of people he's heard from during his research. Again, I was one of those he stood up for.
* HE ASKS tough questions.
Do not buy his books unless you're willing to look in the mirror. While he includes checklists and writes in a very accessible way, he is definitely not about mice-moving-cheese, or fish-throwing, or Five Steps to Eternal Bliss. He's seen our personal foibles and the stupidity in our workplaces, and he tells the truth.
* HE POKES a finger in the eye of those in power, then winks at us.
* HE RESPECTS his readers.
Sure, he gets some things wrong. I don't agree with all his findings or recommendations. But at the end of the day, he respects us to think more deeply and come up with better solutions because he played truth-teller and dots-connector. He sees his role as witness, reporter, clarifier, and provocateur. He figures we're smart enough to figure out the rest.
For me, that's more than good enough.

When was the last time someone consoled you with a hand on the shoulder -- then gave you a gentle but necessary push so that you made your life better? This book does that well! On page 108, Willie introduces something that means a lot to me: his idea of "the hustle plan," which can have more power than a "business plan." On page 89 he shows you "how to set goals that get you going" which is crucial during tough times. Willie writes, "We must overcome our fears, or our fears will definitely overcome us (pg. 118)." Willie emphasizes: "If you are going to turn your setbacks into greenbacks, it is necessary that you will not let your pride poison your prosperity (pg. 61)." He shows us how to turn a setback "into a financial comeback [with] new thinking and some new actions. (pg. 61)." This book has filled me up with encouraging energy. Now, it's your turn. Want more and better? It starts with this book.

The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey Review

The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many people in an organization focus on managing the boss rather than doing their own job. What better way to manage the boss than to constantly seek her/his guidance on everything? Then, the boss can be flattered that you want his/her help, and will also take the blame if anything goes wrong. Insecure bosses like to be involved, so that fewer "errors" occur.
This wonderful book points out that no one can learn without making errors. Also, if you and your subordinate are doing the same job, one of you is superfluous. A common source of stalled thinking in this area is focusing on the fact that you, as manager, can do the job better and faster than you can teach the task or job to someone. What managers fail to realize is that someone closer to the source of the problem should be able to come up with a better solution. Also, the time taken to teach someone else to do the task is usually much less over a year or two than the time taken to help someone learn the task.
The key problem is that we all like to fall back on doing what we are comfortable with and are good at rather than new challenges where we are not so competent. Banish that feeling!
This book gives you lots of practical ideas for how to respond to efforts by your subordinates and colleagues to delegate their work and responsibility to you. You will learn how to see them coming and to keep the monkey where it belongs: with them.
If you find that you are pressed for time, this book is an important source of ideas to free up your life to have less stress while you and your organization both accomplish more.
Good luck with taking care of your monkey business! It's an important step toward developing an irresistible growth enterprise.

Bubble-Proof Real Estate Investing: Wealth-Building Strategies for Uncertain Times Review

Bubble-Proof Real Estate Investing: Wealth-Building Strategies for Uncertain Times
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The only thing holding me back from giving it 5 stars is that Donald Trump's input was limited to maybe one or two minutes of the begining, yet his name is all over the product.
I've read and own several of Gary Eldred's and Dolf De Roos's books and they both live up to the same level of quality that they've offered in their books. Dolf de Roos tends to be more of a motivating and convincing presence. He does a great job of making an argument for real estate, but for most of us shelling out the price of this course, do we really need convincing? It was nice to hear his take on it anyway. He proves his understanding of other investments and highlights key differences between the stock market for example and real estate. Although yes, you can buy stocks on margin it's not as powerful as the leveraging that a bank gives you. Also he's critical of the definition of a bubble burst in real estate (3%) vs. the stock market (40%) in one year. He doesn't think it's fair to refer to that 3% as a bursting vs. the 40% as a "minor correction".
Gary eldred probably offered the most useful and new information of all three of them. He does a great job of giving the listener point after point after point of things to do, watch out for and prepare for. His advice is invaluable.
Curtis Oaks also offers good advice but it could probably be compared to meat and potatoes. It gets the job done in a solid way but doesn't really excite you. He talks about the velocity of money, and tying up the property, two great ideas, although the second one might not apply to people outside of a hot market.
Although the interviewer is taking the role of someone who doesn't know anything, he clearly knows a lot about real estate and does an excellent job of directing the focus of interviews and going into detail where necessary.

SHIFT: How Top Real Estate Agents Tackle Tough Times (PAPERBACK) (Millionaire Real Estate)
Average Reviews:

Any agent, new or experienced, independent or franchised, big broker or little broker, can benefit from this book!
Shift is truly a guidebook for real estate agents/Realtors old or new, IN ANY MARKET even though it's marketed as (see the title) helping agents through the current "buyer's market". Many agents - with experience limited to the booming "seller's market" we experienced in the US between between 2001 and 2007 - were (and some still are) SHOCKED by the shift in the market and what that did to their business, income, lifestyle, etc. Gary Keller explains what happened (and how it's happened before and will happen again) and what the options are for real estate agents. Those that choose to tough it out and stay in real estate, can learn viable strategies to get leads, convert the leads to contracts, and close and get paid in the current market. In fact, the strategies can (and will) be aptly applied in any market.
Tip/hint: Gary recommends taking the book to a local office supply store and having them spiral bound it so it can be used as a field guide of sorts. VERY GOOD IDEA. Thanks for awesome book-delivered coaching/mentoring Gary!!!

You Can't Manage Time: But You Can Manage Many Priorities Review

You Can't Manage Time: But You Can Manage Many Priorities
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Susan de la Vergne has been teaching and giving lectures on time management and Emotional Intelligence (EI) for twenty-five years. Her publication, You Can't Manage Time - But You Can Manage Many Priorities, is an engaging read that strays from typical time management books. YCMT delivers a personal, thorough look at how "time management" is unrealistic, while showing that it is very possible to accomplish more and to have more time when first you take the time to make yourself aware. What is multi-tasking? It's a term that many employers ask that you do well. But how many of us actually do supreme work while multi-tasking? De la Vergne's book explains that multitasking is an impossible reality to demand of ourselves. Tasks are best completed when we focus our energy. This doesn't mean that we should only focus on one thing each time we set about to work, but it does mean that we should focus intently on one thing at a time, moving on after a certain set time period or once we have accomplished a specific goal we have set for ourselves. YCMT explains that our only enemy to production and accomplishment, aside from things that are out of our control, is negative thinking. The worst thing you can do for yourself is distrust the possibility of a positive outcome. Do you feel like you have a different set of 24-hours, 1440 minutes a day, than that of everyone else in the world? It's simply not true. Take stock of your time. Make a journal with what you do with your hours, hour-by-hour for a week or more if necessary. Like the Law of the Conservation of Energy, time is not something created or destroyed. The minute we realize that it is certainly limited and does not regenerate, is the minute we internalize what it means to live in the moment, be responsible with ourselves, and use time to each of our own benefit.

Remarkable Leadership: Unleashing Your Leadership Potential One Skill at a Time (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Review

Remarkable Leadership: Unleashing Your Leadership Potential One Skill at a Time (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kevin Eikenberry has experience in the real world. It makes this book better. He is an avid learner and experienced trainer. They make this book better. And he's worked with real people one-on-one to help them improve their leadership. That, too, makes this book better.
If you're looking for an informed, practical and effective way to accelerate your own leadership development, you should buy, read, and use Remarkable Leadership. This will also be a good book for you if you're responsible for the leadership development program in a company or for the development of a protégé.
Like the experienced trainer he is, Kevin states his goal at the beginning of the book. "This book is designed to help you identify the parts of your personal leadership package working in your favor and help you develop those parts, and any others you wish to work on, to become the leader you are capable of becoming."
He moves directly from that statement to setting up the material that will fill the rest of the book. He has you do an exercise I've done with groups in training for years: identify a great leader you know and define why you rate them as great or remarkable. Then he shares the core competencies as he sees them. Here's the list.
Remarkable leaders ...
Learn continually
Champion change
Communicate powerfully
Build relationships
Develop others
Focus on customers
Influence with impact
Think and act innovatively
Value collaboration and teamwork
Solve problems and make decisions
Take responsibility and have accountability
Manage projects and processes successfully
Set goals and support goal achievement.
After anchoring his thinking in the principle of building on strength, Eikenberry moves to the next chapter where he discusses leadership development in the real world. His model matches my Apprenticeship Model in all important respects.
The three most important are that most leadership development happens on the job, not in the classroom, good leadership development makes extensive use of feedback, and your boss and other more experienced leaders play a crucial role in your development.
Chapter 3 tells you how to get the most out of the book. Then comes the real meat of the book, a chapter on each of the competencies.
Each chapter includes examples and stories to help you get the concept. There are resources to help you develop. And there are two features that make this book stand out. "Now Steps" offer you suggestions for immediate ways to apply the principle of the chapter. And "Bonus Bytes" give you a link to a web site where more resources and ideas await.
This book is for you if you want a guided way to take charge of your own personal development. You'll get solid information and insight, coupled with learning tools and suggestions for action.
This is also a book for you if you're responsible for the development of leaders in a smaller company or for a protégé. The structure of the material and learning tools should make you more effective at that task.
If you support leadership development in a larger corporation you'll find many good ideas here that you'll be able to incorporate. You should also consider buying multiple copies to share with the working managers in your company to help them assume a mentor role.
Now, who should not buy the book? If you expect to learn leadership from simply reading this or any other book, save your money. Leadership is an apprentice trade and learning it takes work on the job. Remarkable Leadership can help you do it better.

Lessons from the Greatest Stock Traders of All Time Review

Lessons from the Greatest Stock Traders of All Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an "ok" book that describes supposed trading methods of some "old master" traders in terms of an event-based trading model. This model requires buying upside breakouts from congestion areas on increasing volume during bull markets. This is a good method if one's disposition can withstand generally high-volatility trades. However, to claim that this mode of trading was actually used by Livermore, Baruch, or Loeb is perhaps claiming too much.
Livermore was highly secretive about his trading. Although he discussed his psychology of trading in LeFevre's work, he did not go into much detail about his actual trading method. He later claimed that industry changes wrought by the SEC in the early 1930s made the markets less amenable to his brand of analysis. He made and lost four fortunes and ended his career and life by suicide in 1940.
Baruch made a significant portion of his trading gains by means of London - New York arbitrage. There is further evidence that he traded, scalped, value invested, growth stock invested, etc. The trader, Baruch, described in this book is only a microcosm of this highly complex, and multi-faceted individual.
Loeb was in, out, and sometimes back in again on a single day on a particular stock! He was a feverish trader! He seldom held a stock for the intermediate-term, and almost never for the long-term. To trade in his manner, one has to be correct a minimum of 30% of the time, and be capitalized enough to bear heavy trading expenses.
Nicolas Darvas wrote two books, "How I Made $2,000,000 In The Stock Market," and "Wall Street: The Other Las Vegas." They are both must reads for the aspiring trader, and best exemplify the event-based model covered by this book under review. Darvas claimed that his trading account went into a nosedive when he continued to use this method during the advent of a bear market.
All of O'Neil's works are excellent. Since he is well-known and active today, I will not comment upon the section of the book devoted to him.
The method presented is useful if one: 1) is adequately capitalized; 2) exercises tight loss control; 3)has an effective selection filter; and 4) is psychologically equipped for active trading (not many people can successfully do this). The book itself, is written in a breezy, narative style, and makes for a quick, pleasurable read.

The trading strategies of legends Jesse Livermore, Bernard Baruch, Gerald Loeb, and more provide ways to triumph in the market

Today's bookshelves are so laden with Johnny-come-lately experts, eager to sell their knowledge to any and all, that it's sometimes hard for traders to know which way to turn or whom to trust. Lessons from the Greatest Stock Traders of All Time makes the choice simple, examining the careers of five traders--Jesse Livermore, Bernard Baruch, Gerald Loeb, Nicolas Darvas, and Bill O'Neil--who, more than any others over the past century, demonstrated tremendous success at conquering Wall Street.

This technique-filled book presents numerous ways in which the timeless strategies of these investing icons can be used to tame today's high-speed, unforgiving marketplaces. Comparing and contrasting the successes--and occasional failures--of these five giants of finance, it reveals:

What Jesse Livermore did to correctly call every market break between 1917 and 1940
How Bill O'Neil stuck to basics to create his famously effective CANSLIM system
The strategies Nicolas Darvas used to become a self-made millionaire several times over

Creative Time Management for the New Millennium Review

Without a doubt, this is the best book on time management I have read in a very long time. Dr. Yager's approach to the biggest challenge we all face each day is well organized, direct, and easy to follow.
The book's opening chapter has a self-evaluation test consisting of five questions that will stimulate your brain and open your mind to new ideas for change. You will learn her 7 Principles of Time Management, emotional blocks that keep us from managing our time wisely, a list of bad habits that affect not only you but those around you, and 4 Simple Organizational Guidlines. And that's just the beginning!
Dr. Jager not only identifies time wasters, but gives you the tools to eliminate them. Her techniques are so practical and hands-on that you'll immediately see ways to change your patterns. Her research documents organizational challenges, andshe clearly prescribes ways for you to overcome them.
While other self-improvement books list the ailments and suggest their way to fix the problem, Creative Time Management gives you the permission to help yourself. That's what growth is all about, now, isn't it?

One More Time: How Do You Motivate Employees? (Harvard Business Review Classics) Review

One More Time: How Do You Motivate Employees (Harvard Business Review Classics)

Frederick Herzberg was Head of the department of Psychology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland when he wrote this Harvard Business Review-article in 1968. He currently is Professor of Management at the University of Utah.
In this article the author tries to answer one of the main questions in management: "How do I get an employee to do what I want?" There is the taditional method to get someone to do something is to administer a kick in the pants, or "KITA" as Herzberg terms it. He then discusses the different myths about motivation and explains how each of them only results in short-term movement. Based on results from various studies he concludes "that the factors involved in producing job satisfaction (and motivation) are separate and distinct from the factors that lead to job dissatisfaction." Or, in other words, "the opposite of job satisfaction is not job dissatisfaction, but, rather, no job satisfaction; and similarly, the opposite of job dissatisfaction is not job satisfaction, but no job satisfaction." This concept has an important impact on management: The growth or motivator factors are intrinsic to the job, while dissatisfaction-avoidance or hygiene factors are extrinsic to the job. Both factors are described in detail, with various tables and graphs explaining each. Herzberg provides us with ten steps for job enrichment, or principles to institute the motivator idea with their employees. But it is important to note that job enrichment is not a one-time proposition, it is a continuous management function.
Yes, this is a fantastic article on motivating employees. Herzberg explains in simple words that the things that make people satisfied and motivated on the job are different in kind from the things that make them dissatisfied. It debunks the traditional myths about motivation and explains that people are motivated by interesting work, challenge, and increasing responsibility. Highly recommended to all managers supervising people. The article is written somewhat old-fashioned business US-English.
