I have been a long time reader of Kevin Matras' on Zacks.com. His Screen of the Week articles have been a consistent source of great investment strategies and top picks. So when I heard that he wrote a book on stock screening, I knew I had to get a copy. And I am so glad I did.
This is a breakthrough work on how to make stock screening accesible to the average investor. Yet still provide advanced ideas for long time screeners like myself.
Long story short, there is simply no way that someone can read Finding #1 Stocks without getting profitable investment ideas that will pay for the book many times over.

You may seldom locate a book telling you one of the most practical aspect in recent regime of financial accountng - booking the derivatives. Nevertheless, it spent a few paragraphs together with some examples showing you the booking of three major types of derivatives in the financial market. Other topics also illustrate comprehensively the functioning of the derivatives as well as accompanied with various examples. Had it not been for the limited pages in explaining the booking methodology, it would have been the best derivatives related book that I have met before.

The History of the World's Greatest Entrepreneurs: The Biography of Success Review

The History of the World's Greatest Entrepreneurs: The Biography of Success
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book because I heard it was derived from a 7 year study of around 150 of the world's greatest entrepreneurs throughout all time and then condensed down into a selection of just 45.
This book features great entrepreneurs across a 1000 year span from Godric to Gates. For each entrepreneur we're given a mini biography which is written in an entertaining but yet educational fashion. Its a heavy weight book at 500 pages but very easy to dip in and out of. Almost like an encyclopaedia or dictionary of the greatest entrepreneurs.
Napoleon Hill studied all the World's great entrepreneurs before writing his book "Think & Grow Rich". Now the study has been done for us we can pick a success model to work with from this crystallized selection of just 45 of the World's Greatest! If you want to know how some of those deals happened, how to win in business, how to keep getting up each time, get material to support your strategy and mindset going forward then this book is a must! Must! Must!
Just bought 2 for father's day, my son's graduation, my sisters birthday. I think everyone should have one.
(Phew, I suppose you can tell I love it eh!).

Did I Ever Tell You About the Time: How to Develop and Deliver a Speech Using Stories that Get Your Message Across
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mythology expert Joseph Campbell wrote, "It would not be too much to say that myth is the secret opening through which the inexhaustible energies of the cosmos pour into human cultural manifestation." Veteran speaker and storyteller Grady Jim Robinson adds, "Science can teach us the empirical truths and laws of the universe, but it is another domain that reveals the meaning behind those laws. Through the symbols and archetypes of story or myth, human beings connect at the deepest levels. Storytelling -- like painting, music, literature, poetry, or dance -- is an art form. And art in its purest state brings the viewer or listener into the very presence of the divine."
For years, Robinson has shared with audiences stories of his early life in small-town Arkansas: a sensitive boy, growing up in the shadow of an older brother who excelled in sports and schoolwork, and the even greater shadow of a gruff father who towered over the area as a highly successful sports coach. The stories paint vivid and unforgettable pictures of a young boy confronting his first Little League at-bat against a menacing pitcher nicknamed "Fishhook," or being pushed out unexpectedly on to the court by his father as the unwilling fifth player at a B-team basketball game so his team would not forfeit.
Robinson discovered that these stories resonated at a profound level with audiences from Harlem to Hollywood. Why? Most of them had no actual experience of life in rural Arkansas. In one case an African American woman who grew up in Harlem told Robinson that in listening to his stories about his father, she felt he was talking about her own father. Robinson sought to understand how this could be.
He discovered Joseph Campbell.
Campbell showed that in cultures around the world and throughout the centuries, universal symbols and themes have emerged in story and legend to which human beings instinctively respond. And the most basic ingredient of all is the "hero's journey," in which the subject leaves his familiar life and embarks on a quest, facing archetypal foes and challenges one after another until confronted with the Supreme Ordeal which will change him forever. He then returns, so changed, to the world he left, bringing the result with him. It is the stuff of "Beowulf" and it is the stuff of "Star Wars." It is the stuff of a young boy in Arkansas determined not to duck when Fishhook's first pitch comes rocketing toward the plate.
It is the stuff, believes Robinson, of which life-changing and memorable speeches are made.
In this book, Robinson examines the nature of human stories in detail, exploring their power, the elements that make a good story, and the trance-like state that audiences fall into while a story is being told. He presents several of his best-known stories and analyzes what he has done to make them most effective. And he presents a number of ideas to get readers started on identifying and shaping the powerful stories from their own lives, because he believes everyone has faced trials and tribulations that will strike universal chords with audiences.
"The human story is life-giving, uplifting, tender, inspiring, and funny, filled with wonder and awe," writes Robinson. "It is deeply painful at times, challenging, requiring courage, faith, and hope. Your story is life-shaping, hilarious, and it is *your* story. Tell it."
If you can find a way to hear Grady Jim live, don't miss the opportunity. If not, get this book!

The Curve of Time: The Classic Memoir of a Woman and Her Children Who Explored the Coastal Waters of the Pacific Northwest (Adventura Books)
Average Reviews:

I read M. Wylie Blanchet's book,THE CURVE OF TIME, for the first time last summer and decided to re-read it again this year, as it was so utterly delightful. Ms. Blanchet's love of nature, the ocean, her wonderful children and people--from the hermits who lived in splendid isolation on the BC Coast in the '30's and '40's to the Coast Indians, who left lonely villages behind--is one of the best books ever. This collection of essays, in no particular chronological order, left me amazed at this remarkably self-assured widow who made sure her children learned about people, literature and the beautiful world that surrounded them in British Columbia. It was easy to imagine my own children in that environment and I could almost see my children swimming with hers in those great sun-warmed coves in BC. The book ended with the "sense of place" they all felt upon returning to their "Little House" on Vancouver Island, surrounded by sea and forest. I wish I could somehow learn more about their lives. Thank you, Timothy Egan for making sure we all knew about this obscure author.

After her husband died in 1927, leaving her with five small children, everyone expected the struggles of single motherhood on a remote island to overcome M. Wylie Blanchet. Instead, this courageous woman became one of the pioneers of "family travel," acting as both mother and captain of the twenty-five-foot boat that became her family's home during the long Northwest summers. Blanchet's lyrically written account reads like fantastic fiction, but her adventures are all very real. There are dangers-rough water, bad weather, wild animals-but there are also the quiet respect and deep peace of a woman teaching her children the wonder and awesome depth of the natural world. "Filled with observations on natural history and the wonders of the wild, (Blanchet's) prose, like the waterfall she describes, sings."-Kliatt

Letitia Baldrige's New Manners for New Times: A Complete Guide to Etiquette Review

Letitia Baldrige's New Manners for New Times: A Complete Guide to Etiquette
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally requested this book for Christmas because of both Ms. Baldrige's conservative reputation and the fact that it was said to address the roles of gays and lesbians in the family. I was not disappointed. It is a fabulous general etiquette book that my mother could respect and would read. And it includes my lifestyle too!
With so much controversy going about these days regarding the definition of family, Ms. Baldrige provides us with guidelines that allow all of us to congregate in peace and without shame. Her anecdotes effectively illustrate her points and are quite funny at times. She also obviously knows how to have a good time-- and in a way that is level-headed and won't alienate those at the more conservative end of the spectrum.
Ms. Baldrige is one of those sort of people you really have to work hard to dislike. And her years of experience lead to a wise commentary that is hardly dated. In her own way, she gives all family members permission to love one another without a bunch of anxiety over who is doing what that isn't anyone's business anyway. And she provides all the tools you need, in the form of advice, to throw a great party. When's the next family reunion? I actually want to go now! :-)

First a disclaimer: the author is a good and dear friend of mine. That said, here's how I see Jerry's book: First the style is conversational, literally, so the book reads fast and draws you into the subject matter quickly and easily. Second, the chapters are brief, engaging and very practical. Third, you find yourself wishing you knew as much as about the "new economy," as the dude in the book does. Anyway, if you're looking for a very practical way to size up your current state of affairs as an educator, small business man or non-profit leader (including church related ministries) this is your book. If you're old enough to remember Tofler's Future Shock, that was elementary school to the very present and future tense of Jerry's book. I don't know what it will do for Jerry's royalties, but save yourself a few shekels and buy the ebook version!

This book seemed so disjointed. I believe Diamond is or was a journalism professor and perhaps he collected his research and lectures to compile this book. A bit pedantic, it eventually picks up steam. While reading the last half of the book, I found myself going back to the earlier chapters to see if I had the same impression. I did. Still, there's a lot of worthwhile and interesting information about the Times dynasty, how it operates, and how it came to be that way. Ever the professor, Diamond gives an interesting lecture.

Deadline is a very interesting read especially to those of you that work in the Construction and Commerical/ Manufacturing Industries. The author gives us (6) stories, several of which give the reader an excellant overview of what it takes to get a project finished within a time frame (in those respective industries). They are suspenseful stories. I would say that I wish there were more story lines in this regard on how the individuals involved solved the problems and got their projects completed within the deadlines imposed.

The Life and Times of Raul Prebisch, 1901-1986 Review

The Life and Times of Raul Prebisch, 1901-1986
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is a tome of about 500 pages (and the author might have been able to cut it down to 400), but overall it provides a really interesting look at a number of things I'm interested in such as:
1) the evolution of development economics, with the Argentine economist Prebisch being considered by many to be the "godfather" of development economics
2) intra-Latin America relations, Latin America-worldwide relations, and Latin America-US relations throughout the 1900s (the years that Prebisch lived)
3) the inter-workings of international policy bodies such as the United Nations and Organization of American States
4) lessons gained from a guy who lost about 9 policy battles for every 1 that he won
The Canadian biographer I thought did a tremendous job of just showing what happened instead of trying to make the biography about him in any way. If you think any of these numbers above could fit holes in your intellectual development, then I would recommend getting around to reading this book sometime.

Raul Prebisch was a leader in economic development theory and international economic policy, an institution builder, and an international diplomat. The Life and Times of Raul Prebisch provides the first book-length account of his life and work, a story cast against the backdrop of Latin America, the Cold War, the rise of the United Nations, and the struggle for equity between first and third worlds. A wunderkind, Prebisch occupied key positions at the Argentine ministry of finance in his twenties and was the general manager of the Argentine Central Bank before forty.Exiled by Juan Peron after World War II, he became arguably the most influential Latin American official at the UN, heading such international organizations as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

We, Me, Them and It: How to Write Powerfully for Business

The magic of serendipity in a London airport bookstore brought this little jewel into my life. I read it twice on my flight, then bought several copies for friends at work.
It's intended for a British audience. Even though I'm American I understood the language and examples and felt they applied to our company.
The main point is that all writing, from the help desk to marketing materials, work to form the brand. Customers love the tone of informal letters -- filled with emotion and individuality, free of the language of bureaucracy. So many people like me get drawn into sterile corporate writing because it sounds professional as we write, but to the customer it ends up sounding haughty and boring.
There are lots of compelling case studies of British companies, some funny stuff, and even great poetry.
One funny:
"The problem with words is you never know whose mouth they've been in."

Making Your Small Farm Profitable: Apply 25 Guiding Principles/Develop New Crops & New Markets/Maximize Net Profits Per Acre Review

Making Your Small Farm Profitable: Apply 25 Guiding Principles/Develop New Crops and New Markets/Maximize Net Profits Per Acre
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me begin by saying what this book is not. This book gives zero advice to practicing small or large farmers on how to turn a profit. This book is not a how-to guide for those starting out. Nor is it a step-by-step method on how to get rich by working the land. If that were the case, then every small farmer in America would have read the book and gotten wealthy, instead of banks and other creditors foreclosing on family farms and putting them on the auctioning block.
Now, let me elaborate on what this book really is. This book is a very polite warning by two very seasoned, jaded individuals who are aware of the escapist notions and romantic fantasies many people have about farming. They have been around long enough to have become intimately familiar with the Back to the Land Movement, a Return to Simplicity, and Environmental Sustainability/Sustainable Agriculture- aka The New Improved Agriculture. It took me a while to realize this (three readings in fact!) and understand the dangers associated with one pernicious stereotype about farming.
Many of us on the sidelines believe that anyone can farm, and all it takes is a willingness to work hard (the trite saying about hard-working ditch diggers getting rich comes readily to mind). When we think of the farmer, we often have one (malicious) stereotype in mind- that of the dumb country boy with a 'gee aw shucks' outlook on farming and life. Basically, we really do not think it takes brains in order to farm successfully. I mean, after all, you take some seeds, toss in a little fertilizer of your choice, water them and come back in a few months to collect your crop and get your pesos (almost literally)- just how hard could that be?
Well, speaking as someone who is thoroughly new to farming, never once has farmed, and is inquisitive about the practice of agriculture, after considerable investigation I can tell you the prospective reader that no matter how hard they work, dumb people will not be able to stay on the farm for long. We on the sidelines do not think farming is difficult because we do not think about the Practice of Farming and the Business of Farming. If your experience of farming up to this point is shopping at your local natural foods co-op, perusing the stalls at the local weekly farmer's market, or wandering the aisles at some trendy, eco-hip retailer like Whole Foods or Wilds Oats (who have skillfully co-opted environmentalism as a path to insane riches), and you are considering going into farming as a vocation, then I do not think you will hear the polite warning contained in this book. If you are someone stuck in a dead-end or high-paying but otherwise unfulfilling career (like this reviewer), and you are seeking an out, a means of escape (what we politely but laughingly call a 'transition'), then you just might catch the polite warning consistently stated throughout this book.
Farming attracts many people not because of its business or financial aspects but because of the lifestyle many people associate with farming. If you are an MD, then you are in the business of healthcare. Your business and your lifestyle are completely different. In fact, whether your business is highly successful or modestly successful, your lifestyle could be lavish, it could be modest, or it could be parsimonious- it's up to you and your personal preferences. If you don't like your current situation, from where you work, to who you work for (read HMOs) to your clientele base, you can make a change without changing your lifestyle- too much that is.
Now here is the polite warning: if you are drawn to farming because of the lifestyle, and you turn this lifestyle into a business, then it behooves you to make damn certain that your business can pay for itself, because after all, your business is your lifestyle and your lifestyle is your business. The lifestyle will not work out if the business end does not pay. In fact, the business end may place quite severe limitations on the lifestyle you can reasonably expect to achieve, which in many cases will be well below what you are currently accustomed to. Unlike a 9 to 5 gig with some godless multinational, you can not simply just pack up and leave (this assumes implicitly that the heartless .......... have not fired you in the latest round of restructurings), and if the business end does not work out, you lose not only your lifestyle, but also your home.
For me, the true heart of the book and the real message of the text were contained in the Foreword by Budd Kerr Jr and Part I- Getting Started. In terms of content, the book contains little on the techniques of farming, and has eleven chapters divided into four parts- Getting Started, Farming, Planning and Marketing, and Management, with a handy appendix chock full of useful resources on the Business and Practice of Farming. The text is specifically pitched at a level that almost anyone can understand, and there is a noticeable bias towards the environmentally minded reader.
That said, the true purpose of this book is to get you, the prospective reader who may be thinking of getting into farming, to start thinking about the Practice of Farming and the Business of Farming, all romanticism and eco-hip verbiage aside. This book is of no use to someone who is already farming, and in need of help. The best time to read this book is before you get into farming whole hog as they say down on the farm.
Even though it took me three passes to finally get the message, I am glad that I did read it before taking any action.
Read this book several times BEFORE you venture into farming, not during or after.

Managerial Economics & Business Strategy Review

Managerial Economics and Business Strategy
Average Reviews:

This book provides an excellent background for learning applied managerial economics. Mr. Baye uses interesting real-world examples, which is difficult when writing about the entirely hypothetical world of micro-economics. I felt that the section on Game Theory was especially useful in explaining real world market paricipant behavior in pricing decisions. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for both students of economics, as well as those non-students seeking a weekend of light reading in the topic of economics.

Baye's Managerial Economics and Business Strategy remains the best-selling managerial economics textbook. It was the first textbook to provide students with the tools from intermediate microeconomics, game theory, and industrial organization to make sound managerial decisions.Baye is known for his real-world examples, frontier research, inclusion of modern topics not found in other managerial books, as well as balanced coverage of traditional and modern microeconomic tools. The Sixth Edition retains all of these signature features, and it includes a number of new class-tested features. These include enhanced pedagogical features such as learning objectives, new and updated business applications, additional end-of-chapter problems, better prose, and updated data.Additionally, the Time Warner Case, introduced last edition, is strengthened in the Sixth Edition with detailed teaching notes and nine additional end-of-case problems.
