"Restless Giant" is a fascinating account of the life and times of Jean Aberbach, the elusive music publishing legend who, with his brother Julian, built one of music history's most powerful popular music publishing companies: Hill and Range Songs. During the 1940s and 1950s music publishers, rather than artists and record companies, controlled the American hit-making machine. Using corporate records, Aberbach's daybooks, and extensive interviews with top performers and songwriters, Biszick-Lockwood weaves an adventure story that demystifies this occupation, showing how Aberbach's keen insights, behind-the-scenes manipulations, and bold business moves fundamentally changed the music industry and nurtured the careers of some of America's biggest popular performers and songwriters.

When I first got the book I thought I'd read it straight thru without focusing on any of the exercises. I realized after the second chapter I was doing myself a dis-service by not completing the exercises as suggested. I started from the beginning and as I finished each chapter I did do the exercises. Although I just finished the book and am starting to adjust my mindset to what I've learned from the book-I realize I have had hidden feelings about money that may have sabotaged my finances. It will be interesting as I re-create budgets and spending habits if I can take what I've learned from the book and put them into my reality. I can see where if I take to heart what I've learned it will be very beneficial. Making it work will still be up to me-no matter how inspiring a book is it is still up to the person to make it work. Thank you Paul Gubany for the inspiration.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Mapping Your Recovery: Growing sales in difficult times

Mapping Your Recovery is meant to be a guide for those business owners that have been beaten down by the poor economy and looking for help in growing their business. It is a compilation of articles I have written during the first few years of the recession (2008, 2009 and 2010) that focus on improving the value of a business regardless of what the economy is doing. There are a number of strategies that can be used to move your organization forward in difficult times, and the articles in this book will help you put them in perspective and put them to use. Share this book with your management team and use it as a way of stimulating discussion during meetings to start planning your improvement. Once you have developed a plan to move forward you need to do the most important thing... EXECUTE. Most businesses do a fine job of planning, but a poor job of implementation. The best plan in world does you no good sitting on a shelf! The information in this book is based on my experience in running four different businesses ranging in size from a start-up to a 1,600 person organizations, as well as working with a number of small and medium sized business owners in my consulting practice.

I like the forrmat of this book! the information is in small, concise nuggets, and it's a great mix of some of the more obscure features of FCP, practical tips on how to use features of the progam to make your work look and sound better, system tips, and ideas about your creativity and workflow.
The fact that it's not just about "where are the buttons in FCP" makes this a much more valuable book. The authors are obviously familiar with real-world post-production situations. It's a keeper.

The Lords of Strategy: The Secret Intellectual History of the New Corporate World Review

The Lords of Strategy: The Secret Intellectual History of the New Corporate World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The debate over the value of high-level strategic consultants and academics has waged for decades. I was one such consultant for the better part of ten years who often spent the first part of any conversation defending my profession (I have since moved to advertising and now defend that profession). Kiechel covers the rise of strategy consulting firms--BCG, McKinsey, and Bain--and notable business school professors who contributed to the strategy revolution. His background provides the credibility to do so, he was a former Managing Editor at Fortune magazine and was the Editorial Director of Harvard Business Publishing from 1998 to 2002.
He sees the best strategists as objective intellectuals who see patterns of evidence and put them through conceptual frameworks to produce pragmatic insights. This largely began in the sixties and seventies when strategy began to be systematized and integrated. Cost, customer and competitors were the three primary areas strategists looked for patterns to exploit. In the nineties, the practices were more fad-like including reengineering and total quality management. This was the era I practiced in and I felt like the lone voice extolling the virtue of a simple but robust strategic planning process. I jumped for joy when in June, 1997, BusinessWeek had on their cover, The Return of Strategic Planning: Once More With Feeling. Which was the pivot point for Taylorism-like monitoring and measurement processes becoming more humanistic and holistic in their design.
The author tells some great industry stories but what struck me is just how important the role of strategy and management consultants is to business. The influence that such a small number of people and firms have had on modern business is truly staggering. This is where the subtitle of the book comes from: The Secret Intellectual History of the New Corporate World. Just a handful of models and frameworks devised by a small number of minds have been used by countless businesses to generate their strategies - this is what is so amazing.
From my experience, the best strategists retain a child-like wonder and a natural intellectual curiosity that is backed by analytic rigor - an incredibly hard combination of skills to possess in one person. I suggest this book only if you are interested in the history it covers and/or are a follower of the strategist value debate. In other words, this is not a strategy how-to book. Other books in this area I have read are The Management Myth, The McKinsey Mind, Rip-Off!, House of Lies, and Consulting Demons - so you may want to check them out too.

The Ultimate Guide to Trading ETFs: How To Profit from the Hottest Sectors in the Hottest Markets All the Time Review

The Ultimate Guide to Trading ETFs: How To Profit from the Hottest Sectors in the Hottest Markets All the Time

Just finished reading the Ultimate Guide to Trading ETFsThe Ultimate Guide to Trading ETFs: How To Profit from the Hottest Sectors in the Hottest Markets All the Time (I bought it to learn more about gold ETFs and whether or not leveraged ETFs are safe)and there are a few things I wanted to point out to investors who are considering a copy:
1. While this guide would be informative for the new ETF investor, it is certainly not just an "intro" guide. Much of the material in the middle chapters of the book concerns the pricing, trading and construction of ETFs and other exchange-traded products.
2. I found Chapter 4 (Building a Portfolio Using ETFs) to be particularly useful. Rather than just relying on sample portfolios, this book addresses the nuances of ETF investing. By creating categories like "The High-Touch Satellite Investor" and "The Portfolio Builder" (as well as sub-categories) it helps to break-out investor types beyond the usual black and white categories (short vs. long term investor - for example).
3. The ETF ranking appendix at the back was an added bonus. Rather than categorizing ETFs by size or sector, this book takes analysis one step further. ETFs are also ranked, in this index, according to complexity. Not every natural gas ETF is the same, and this index helps to provide a quick reference for important differences between funds.
While I don't usually write product reviews, I know there are a lot of how-to investing guides out there and I wanted to highlight this new addition. While the name might sound a little cheesy, the Ultimate Guide To Trading ETFsThe Ultimate Guide to Trading ETFs: How To Profit from the Hottest Sectors in the Hottest Markets All the Time contains a lot of solid analysis and information for sophisticated investors that you won't find elsewhere.

An essential guide to trading trends with ETFs
At any given time, a particular country's market or a particular segment of the market-such as energy or technology-might be booming. The Ultimate Guide To Trading ETFs provides a time-tested strategy for using exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to profit from these trending markets and sectors.
By monitoring the performance of ETFs, authors Don Dion and Carolyn Dion show how to capitalize on these fast-moving, ever-changing trends. He then discusses how to stay ahead of the curve by identifying markets and sectors that are gathering momentum and monitoring those markets for signs that the momentum is losing steam. Dion also explains how you can build a balanced portfolio of ETFs and manage your allocations to profit from the shifting trends.
Provides advice for both aggressive investors who are willing to utilize leveraged and short market ETFs, as well as more conservative investors who want to limit risk
Highlights a wide variety of ETFs currently available to investors
Shows how to profit from fast-developing trends across all markets and sectors

The world of ETFs has created many options for individual investors, and The Ultimate Guide To Trading ETFs shows you how to make the most of those opportunities.

Otto Kahn: Art, Money, and Modern Time Review

Otto Kahn: Art, Money, and Modern Time
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the early decades of the twentieth century, almost everyone in modern theater, literature, or film knew of Otto Kahn (1867-1934), and those who read the financial press or followed the news from Wall Street could scarcely have missed his name. A partner at one of America's premier private banks, he played a leading role in reorganizing the U.S. railroad system and supporting the Allied war effort in World War I. The German-Jewish Kahn was also perhaps the most influential patron of the arts the nation has ever seen: he helped finance the Metropolitan Opera, brought the Ballets Russes to America, and bankrolled such promising young talent as poet Hart Crane, the Provincetown Players, and the editors of the Little Review.
This book is the full-scale biography Kahn has long deserved. Theresa Collins chronicles Kahn's life and times and reveals his singular place at the intersection of capitalism and modernity. Drawing on research in private correspondence, congressional testimony, and other sources, she paints a fascinating portrait of the figure whose seemingly incongruous identities as benefactor and banker inspired the New York Times to dub him the "Man of Steel and Velvet."
"This rich and fascinating biography tells the remarkable story of a remarkable man who, combining the power of an international financier with the finesse of a patron of the arts, helped make New York City a world cultural capital."--Arthur Schlesinger Jr.
"Theresa Collins's Otto Kahn is a superb piece of biography and a major work of historical reclamation. This is history written in the grand manner--sweeping in scope, majestic in style. And it restores to us in all his grandeur and cultural consequence a remarkable figure from our past."--Martin Duberman, City University of New York
"This first full-length biography of Otto Kahn offers a compelling portrait of a major figure in the history of American finance and culture. The keen eye and vivid prose of Theresa Collins illuminate the many facets of this fascinating character and his world."--Maury Klein, University of Rhode Island

Drug War Heresies: Learning from Other Vices, Times, and Places (RAND Studies in Policy Analysis)

Drug War Heresies may be the best book ever written about modern U.S. drug policy. Written by a psychologist and an economist, the authors draw on attempts to control other substances (such as alcohol prohibition in the U.S.) and exhaustively examine the alternative and experimental European drug policies that most American readers will find particularly useful. The authors are careful to not impose their values and beliefs into their work, instead focusing on the consequences of alternative drug policies. The result is a persuasive case for policy reform in America that is not doctrinaire. Required reading for all who are interested in illicit drug policy in America.

The authors have created a handbook for leaders to be used in an ever changing and diverse workplace. The book begins with the notion that diversity initiatives should focus on managers and their leadership capabilities. This very practical approach to leadership makes it possible to improve communications within an organization as well as improve performance that impacts the bottom line. This book drives home the point that everyone in the organization wants to feel valued and that the manager's responsibility is to create the environment for total employee engagement.
Many of the concepts are basic and fundamental to success. What's the catch? We don't always remember to practice them. Managing Differently is the reminder we need to propel us to greater interaction with our people which leads to greater productivity and bottom line results. I have provided this book to my direct reports and would suggest that other leaders do the same.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Managing Differently: Getting 100% from 100% of Your People 100% of the Time

We got off track early with diversity by focusing on sensitivity to differences and by limiting those differences to race and gender. As a result, diversity and diversity management have been marginalized and the strategic value has become invisible. Meanwhile, management techniques have focused too much on identifying specific styles. There have been a series of fads targeted toward leaders and focused on addressing operational issues. In both cases, we have attempted to apply simple tools to an increasingly complex environment. We have not taken advantage of available talent because the link between people management, diversity of perspective, and performance was never made . . . until now.Jim Rodgers, CMC, a confidential advisor to successful leaders in dozens of market leading companies, comes out of the shadows to reveal the secret to their success. Managing Differently™ implies that effective people management is the essential key to increasing performance for any organization. People are by nature diverse (different and similar) – and this increases the level of complexity in the workplace. However, getting 100% from 100% of people, 100% of the time is not only achievable – it is fundamental to world class performance.Jim uses simple language and vivid examples to help leaders and managers move from knowing to doing those things which produce high levels of performance from their people.

Average Reviews:

Brandy, Our Man in Acapulco; The Life and Times of Frank M. Brandstetter, is a fascinating account of the never-dull life of Brandy, a colorful WWII hero, intelligence officer, and hotelier. The co-authors, Professor Carlisle and Dr. Monetta, engage the reader with tales from the interesting life of a Hungarian immigrant who was at the center of some of the century's most memorable and important events. The authors recount Brandy's heroic escapades, from D-Day and helping to foil a massive breakout of German POW's from England during WWII, to ensuring the safety and rescue of hundreds of Americans from Cuba after Castro's rise to power. Following his retirement from active military duty and his "semi" retirement from intelligence work, Brandy went on to create and manage Las Brisas, the number one resort in the world during the 1970's. Many of his innovative management and motivational techniques are predecessors of current day employee motivation and hospitality management principles. The book's enticing Foreword is written by Astronaut Jim Lovell, of Apollo 13 fame. An excellent choice for history buffs and WWII enthusiasts, "Brandy" is quite a story and one that I highly recommend.

Getting What You Want: How to Reach Agreement and Resolve Conflict Every Time (Plume)

There might be redundancies, and "Triangle Talk" is simply the definition of the word "compromise", given a snazzy buzzword. But the book is cheap and it does have some good information, which is presented in a readable fashion.
The Fast Track in the back of the book is a great feature, and it's the primary reason I'm writing a review.
Many books on this subject have thin ideas and thick vocabulary, padded with a lot of fluff. This book skips the fluff and is really like a book of notes taken while reading many other Self-Help Relationship books.
You can read through the notes and refrence the full explanation if needed. In this way you can read the book without a bookmark. You can keep it on the shelf for reference after you've firmly put a tip into practice.
The grandaddy of books like this is How to Have Confidence and Power in Dealing with People by Les Giblin, who really summed up and expanded on Dale Carnegie.
I highly recommend Les Giblin's book, it should be a school textbook.
Getting What You Want, is an easy buy, didn't undo anything I learned from Giblin, plus Kare Anderson makes some nice additions, Velcro Praise jumps to mind.
