Flying the Mail (Epic of Flight) Review

Flying the Mail (Epic of Flight)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have an interest in flight and recently in airmail. The Time-Life book series are really nice books, and this one was no exception.
The history, anecdotes and photographs of the US's early Airmail activities are fascinating. And I simply had no idea how many early pilots died trying to fly at night and fly through terrible conditions. There are also a number of laugh-out-loud anecdotes that are a treat.
Overall a book with great information, and great old photos, about a really amazing time in early aviation in the US (Also touches briefly on early air mail activities in the UK, France & Germany).
Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in early US aviation or early US Airmail.

Singular Spectrum Analysis: A New Tool in Time Series Analysis Review

Singular Spectrum Analysis: A New Tool in Time Series Analysis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This text is divided into three main parts: 1) Mathematical notes, 2) Theory and Methods, 3) Applications. As a reader interested in time series analysis but unfamiliar with singular spectrum analysis (SSA) per se, I was not really sure what SSA was exactly, or what it is suppose to accomplish, until nearly halfway into the book. Very early on, I found no one single sentence, paragraph, definition, or description that clearly defined SSA beyond a "technique based on spectral decomposition."
Although the text is clearly written and well organized, the authors' target audience is not well established. For example, Section I starts with an rather remedial primer on linear matrix algebra, yet Section II already seems to assume the reader has a fairly mature knowledge of statistical inference, hypothesis testing, and principal component analysis (which might be gained from courses on statistical analysis of variance, or ANOVA). The authors also make frequent references to other time series analysis techniques, such as ARMA modeling and Fourier analysis in Section III. Familiarity with ANOVA and other kinds of time series analyses will certainly benefit the reader.
One gets the impression that the manuscript has been enhanced to fill a textbook-sized volume (and would explain why the book dedicates an entire chapter to numerical examples illustrating such things as how to multiply two matrices). The font size is strikingly large for a 6" x 9" textbook, and the layout is noticeably fragmented with lots of section subtitles and large amounts of white space around these section titles. Specifically, each page accommodates no more than 34 lines of 4 1/4" wide text, which I compared with several textbooks this size which usually accommodated 40-45 lines of 4 1/2" wide text (I suspect the 153 page content might have been fitted into about 100 pages just by changing the book layout). Given the quite basic subject matter of the first few chapters, the remainder of the book is but a fairly short survey on the main subject of SSA. The advantage is that its contents can be covered relatively quickly.
The rarity of introductory texts specifically dedicated to this niche subject matter, and the uncomplicated presentation the authors have chosen, make this book a worthwhile, albeit expensive, introduction to the topic. This book has nice presentation qualities, and had it been issued as a thin, inexpensive paperback, this would more easily be a 4 or 5 star book. Similarly, this is a 4 star book for the prospective reader analyzing data related to the atmospheric sciences or climatology (as much of the authors' background materials emphasize these areas). An expanded second edition would be welcomed.

Successful Project Management: Develop Effective Skills, Manage the Risks, Use Tried and Tested Techniques (Sunday Times Creating Success) Review

Successful Project Management: Develop Effective Skills, Manage the Risks, Use Tried and Tested Techniques (Sunday Times Creating Success)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trevor Young, this book's author, is a prolific author of project management and process improvement books that are characterized by brevity, rich content and expert advice. This book has all of those characteristics.
At 155 pages this book is brief, but the range of topics, excellent use of illustrations, tables and checklists pack rich information into the relatively small page count. More importantly, though, is the way the book is structured, and the expertise that the author shares.
Highlights: Chapters 2 and 3 delve into factors for success and cover both obvious and subtle factors. In my opinion even seasoned project managers will learn a few tricks. In particular, the process outlined in Chapter 3 is a clearly defined model that every project manager should adopt. Chapters 4 through 10 cover each major topic area in the process, including project conception and initiation, definition, stakeholder management, risk management, planning and estimating, launching and controlling the project, and shutting down the project.
Although the book flows in a sequence, each chapter can be read independently of the preceding ones, and each chapter is crammed with best practices, techniques for satisfying requirements of critical success factors, and checklists. The best feature of this book is that it goes to the key points, clearly explains them and shows how to use them in real projects.

No B.S. Ruthless Management of People and Profits: The Ultimate, No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Guide to Really Getting Rich
Average Reviews:

I've been reading Dan Kennedy's stuff and attending his seminars for years but I have to say I was shocked at how blunt this book is. Kennedy won't make any friends among employees (and vendors) who don't understand that they are zebras (you'll have to read the book to see what that means) and that the sole reason that the person running the show (biz owner) has a business in the first place is to make a profit.
Kennedy has little time for whiners who complain that the minimum wage isn't high enough or that employers should learn how to "handle" persnickety employees so that the employee "feels good."
Rather, Dan's blunt point is that business owners take too much crap from employees and their crying and as a result, are being robbed blind by most of them.
When you start to read this book you'll probably say "well, this doesn't happen in my business" but as you go through the book, detailed example by detailed example, I can guarantee that you (biz owner) will see yourself and one or more of your employees/vendors somewhere.
The book is not all negative. In fact its filled with great ideas to get maximum productivity out of those who you choose to allow to work with you. It all starts, though, with remembering that the only reason that you should be running a business is to make a profit for yourself. Start there--otherwise go get a job and work for someone else.
With that as the premise, why in the world would you let your employees steal anything from you. He's not just talking about a case of Coke out of the bag room, or something obvious as money out of the drawer (though he does have examples in the book of that) but stealing your money by being unproductive (or worse--like actually trying to bury your business.
I recommend this book 100% for all business owners, but especially those small business owners. It comes with a CD which is a very good interview that Lee Milteer did of Dan Kennedy about Ruthless Management of People and Profits.
I do think that some folks will be fired after the boss reads this one.. but Dan has recommendations for them, too. Like: get more education, hang out with winners; understand that while there is no place like the United States for opportunity, the world owes you NOTHING.

The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey Review

The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many people in an organization focus on managing the boss rather than doing their own job. What better way to manage the boss than to constantly seek her/his guidance on everything? Then, the boss can be flattered that you want his/her help, and will also take the blame if anything goes wrong. Insecure bosses like to be involved, so that fewer "errors" occur.
This wonderful book points out that no one can learn without making errors. Also, if you and your subordinate are doing the same job, one of you is superfluous. A common source of stalled thinking in this area is focusing on the fact that you, as manager, can do the job better and faster than you can teach the task or job to someone. What managers fail to realize is that someone closer to the source of the problem should be able to come up with a better solution. Also, the time taken to teach someone else to do the task is usually much less over a year or two than the time taken to help someone learn the task.
The key problem is that we all like to fall back on doing what we are comfortable with and are good at rather than new challenges where we are not so competent. Banish that feeling!
This book gives you lots of practical ideas for how to respond to efforts by your subordinates and colleagues to delegate their work and responsibility to you. You will learn how to see them coming and to keep the monkey where it belongs: with them.
If you find that you are pressed for time, this book is an important source of ideas to free up your life to have less stress while you and your organization both accomplish more.
Good luck with taking care of your monkey business! It's an important step toward developing an irresistible growth enterprise.

Warren Buffett on Business: Principles from the Sage of Omaha Review

Warren Buffett on Business: Principles from the Sage of Omaha
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With the main exception of a relatively small textile producer known as Berkshire Hathaway, which Warren Buffett bought outright and which became the springboard for his investing career, the earlier part of Buffett's long and successful career was mainly devoted to non-controlling investments in companies, versus buying whole companies. Thus, today many people think of Buffett as "the world's most successful investor." However, Buffett's investing skills are not the primary topic of this relatively brief and easy reading book (although there is one chapter on personal investing). This book, written by Richard Connors and based on a class he taught about Buffett at the Washington University in St. Louis Lifelong Learning Institute, is devoted to describing Buffett's management activities as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. That's not a bad idea at all, given that over the years Buffett has gradually placed comparatively less emphasis on Berkshire's investments (which today include the likes of American Express, Coca-Cola and Wells Fargo) and greater emphasis on Berkshire's growing stable of wholly-owned subsidiaries. Indeed, the list of owned companies, like GEICO, International Dairy Queen, Shaw Industries, FlightSafety, Borsheim's Fine Jewelry, Nebraska Furniture Mart and The Pampered Chef, among numerous others, has grown quite large.
The prime source for this book--by far--is Buffett's annual letters to Berkshire's shareholders, written over the last 40 years. Indeed, if you were to count words, my guess is that 95% or more of this book is simply the reproduction of Buffett's comments in his various letters, organized by Connors, the book's author. So if you have read Buffett's letters over the years (an exercise I would recommend to almost anyone interested in business or investing), then you won't find much new material in this book, save for excerpts from occasional interviews with Charlie Rose or excerpts from some of Buffett's other interviews or comments.
Connors has organized Buffett's shareholder commentaries into chapters that address the various important issues of corporate management: executive compensation, time management, assessment of risk, corporate governance and culture, crisis management, capital allocation and shareholder communication, among others. Buffett's comments are interesting, valuable and candid, and he is a very clear and entertaining writer. There is some human interest material, such as an account of Buffett's 1951 Saturday trip to Washington, DC to visit the offices of GEICO (because his mentor, Benjamin Graham, was the chairman of the company). As the somewhat well-known story goes, Buffett pounded on the door to GEICO's locked building, until a custodian finally led him to meet Lorimer Davidson, an assistant to GEICO's president at the time. Davidson, who would go on to become CEO of GEICO, took the time to educate young Buffett on the power of direct marketing of insurance, and years later Buffett would go on to buy the whole company.
In short, although there is precious little new material provided here (hence the four-star rating, not five), this is a very interesting book, and it is interesting primarily because it was essentially written by Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors--and corporate managers--of all time.

My pride has suffered heavy losses in my job; I came to the position with a hefty amount of successful experience on all levels-teaching, self-employment as a consultant, published author, educational administrator, parent of a child with special needs, program developer, educational sales consultant and change agent. Considering my somewhat Thomist approach to life and education wherein I feel it is my calling to serve others, I must adopt humility and meekness every day. People with whom I work do not know my background, and I feel it would be divisive and counterproductive to flaunt my expertise. McDermott seems to have embraced the same humility and mission of service to others, and this has sustained, inspired and affirmed me in my darkest moments. I highly recommend the book Time Out For Leaders to all; we are all leaders and part of the great organization called humanity.

I have always detested RFPs. They are a big waste of time, talent and resources. But, unfortunately, they are a part of the business world we live in. Two things. First, if you are a responder to RFPs, this book will help you manage the game so that the rules are tipped in your favor. Second, if you create RFPs (you know who you are), then read this book and get a clue on how you can develop an RFP that is not an eternal pit of confusion.

It used to be that you could ignore RFPs. Only a small portion of the market used them in their buying process and you could work around those companies. Today, governance rules dictated by boards and administered by finance have made RFPs and RFQs a dominating component of the large-deal world. Not only can you no longer ignore them, but you need to know that companies use RFPs-and increasingly purchasing and procurement-for many reasons that have little to do with the opportunity offered in the official document. The result? We all have no choice but to go through the expensive and time-consuming process. And though you might like to believe the system is fair, if your company is pitching a disproportionately larger client, you're at a disadvantage from the moment you begin the process.WHY?Because the RFP system is not built for you. It's built for big companies and government institutions that benefit from RFPs.But no matter how hard you try to avoid them, there will inevitably come a day when that irresistible RFP lands on your desk. It's almost like it was written for you. This book is your best guide on what to know, to question and to do when faced with that RFP. It will also help you develop the confidence and understanding to know when to quit the process before it even starts or when to stay in it and win big.
