Covers software development, implementation of software packages, and knowledge management. A basic theme of the book is to relate the system to the business processes. There are many useful detailed lessons learned. We have found a number of these to be valuable in my department. The same applies to the checklists. There are two sections of each chapter that are also good. These are what can go wrong and how to speed up the implementation. The book is more in tune with the real situation that you find in IT with limited resources and time. The book also gives recognition to the fact that legacy systems will be around for a long time. Many other books assume that these can be replaced or ignored. We spend over half of our programmer time on legacy systems maintenance so that allocating the rest of their time is a major concern-which this book addresses. Another good idea is that in software package evaluation, you do not focus on software features, but instead on what capabilities the packages are lacking. We used this idea to select different accounting software than if we had used features. The book is easy to read and can be used by non technical people. Several of our business managers have found it informative. In the next version of this book, the authors should expand their guidelines.

When was the last time someone consoled you with a hand on the shoulder -- then gave you a gentle but necessary push so that you made your life better? This book does that well! On page 108, Willie introduces something that means a lot to me: his idea of "the hustle plan," which can have more power than a "business plan." On page 89 he shows you "how to set goals that get you going" which is crucial during tough times. Willie writes, "We must overcome our fears, or our fears will definitely overcome us (pg. 118)." Willie emphasizes: "If you are going to turn your setbacks into greenbacks, it is necessary that you will not let your pride poison your prosperity (pg. 61)." He shows us how to turn a setback "into a financial comeback [with] new thinking and some new actions. (pg. 61)." This book has filled me up with encouraging energy. Now, it's your turn. Want more and better? It starts with this book.

Guerrilla Guide to High-Tech Trade Shows:: The Underground Resource for Saving Your Time, Money, and Sanity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book reads like the review of your hometown, where you know the reviewer has passing familiarity with the subject, but the information comes across as a pay-by-the-word exercise rather than a useful guide.
Much of this comes across as stating the obvious. Do you really need to pay to have someone tell you that if the phone line is long, go across the street and try another one; or sillier yet, go check the "restricted access" area of the hotel for a phone? Or that if you're carrying a lot of SWAG (i.e., stuff we all get) you might not want to walk back to your hotel because it might be awkward and your bag might break?
As to travel arrangements, is there really a big audience of attendees who are paying their own way and can't figure out just to call a travel agent and ask for the cheapest fare and leave it at that?
The "gonzo tours" were lame. Las Vegas, for instance. "Drive out to Red Rock Canyon". Any possibility of adding a little more descriptive information so someone would actually have a reason to check it out? The main tour consists mainly of trolling the boulevard in a pimp mobile. What about rating (or even mentioning!) the rides, for example, and maybe suggesting the best time to go for the shortest lines. Or mention why you might actually want to spring for expensive tickets to Cirque du Soleil. Or if you have a day off, one of the most spectacular places on earth, Zion N. P., is 3 1/2 hours away. And the largest (or one of the largest) roller coasters in the world is about a half hour away. The Las Vegas tours section looks like 5 minutes was spent on the web before writing it.
It seemed like every chapter I read left me waiting for real substance. For example, under the heading "Wear Comfortable Shoes", there isn't one helpful tip to elaborate. The authors should have stopped while they were ahead, i.e., after the heading. Maybe that was the point; it wasn't really written to be useful. It's really some guys' version of a humorous take on trade shows.
The other thing that really started to grate on me was the fact that they didn't even bother to use a spell checker or editor (apparently). A few examples: "PRESENTAION", "Freemont St." (It's FREMONT!), and "steady gate" (as opposed to steady gait).
In summary, you'd really do better with your own common sense or advice from a co-worker than you would spending your money on this mass of verbiage. "Hot tips" is really false advertising.

Sorely overlooked because of his genre, David E. Davis, Jr. is one of the best writers of our generation. If cars didn't exist he'd probably not have as much fun writing, but his work would be considered genius. Leading in Tough Times: The Manager's Guide to Responsibility, Trust and Motivation Review

Leading in Tough Times: The Manager's Guide to Responsibility, Trust and Motivation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The power of Leading in Tough Times comes from using it as an operating manual for business leaders going through restructurings, transitions, downsizings, organizational changes (and which ones aren't). It's a robust compilation of best thinking on how to keep employees engaged while going through the turmoil of change. The beauty of it is that it isn't about using gimmicks, gadgets, or smoke and mirrors; it's all about challenging leaders to apply authentic, principled, high-value, practical approaches.
The authors (father and daughter) pitch some compelling hardballs to consider early on, "Suppose it's not your job to motivate - that you'll cease using your approval and possibility of advancement as a carrot for certain performance. All carrots will be banned, in fact. Suppose that people are naturally motivated to work toward a meaningful, common vision. When we fail to see motivated people, our questions would have to change from 'How do I motivate them?' to 'What is getting in the way of their motivation?' This changes the conversation considerably."
And that empowerment thing: "There is a lot of talk in organizations about empowerment. But that's mostly all we get - the talk. More times than not, empowerment is just another buzzword and has little to do with fundamental change in the division of power, profits, and authority. And yet, we know that if our organizations are to truly thrive during tough times, we absolutely must help people to feel powerful in a real way. Give people the control and influence necessary to do whatever it takes to get the job done. Increase their power by helping them build their skills and knowledge, and by making sure they have the resources they need to be successful. Make them creators of their own destiny."
I like those ideas.
Actually, every idea the authors offer makes sense, great sense, great common sense. In fact, that's why I rated it only a four instead of a five. It was so pragmatic I didn't discover any profound new insights that would pull the trigger on that five for me. But, I shouldn't expect that from a book written in a manual-mold. (Maybe the authors and publisher will get more delight knowing I bought a copy of the book for each one of my managers, my boss, and my boss' boss.)
This is a book that needs to be imbedded into the Philosophies, Strategies, and Ethics for Leaders section in every Company Operating Manual. It provides substantial coaching on how to energize and engage the workforce. And it guides leaders on ethics, vision, mindfulness, and effective communication. All advice intended for managing during change and tough times. In reality, it's great advice for always.

How to Persuade People Who Don't Want to be Persuaded: Get What You Want-Every Time

Having had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Bauer speak, I eagerly looked forward to reading his co-authored book. His commanding "Stage Presence" dressed in a tailored suit stands in my memory like a spot light in the night. This presence, one which ultimately mesmerizes you into believing that what ever he says is some how correct.
That said, I eagerly picked up his book and started reading, only to bog down every time I picked up! With massive effort I finally finished the material and was left wondering what "The Heck I Had Read"?
Was this a Sales Training Book, Was This a Simply Magic Tricks Book, or was this just a way to get published?
The book is filled with slight of hand, misdirection and numerous illusions all illustrating anything but The Title of the Book!
It is unlikely that anyone would be able to persuade anybody to do anything after finishing it...But Entertain You Might!
This book is truly simplistic but masterful in its ability to make much out of little! It is also unlikely the average reader of this book would ever resort to the slight of hand or magic tricks purported as Ice Breakers in any sales presentation. Perhaps more usable at the next family reunion or reception.
Granted if you already have a background in magic this book would likely be most entertaining. It is also unlikely that any body would be fooled by the presentation or intent of this message or your implementation in a business setting.
Perhaps after four or five martinis the story would be different
In summation....to utilize a famous marketing quote.....Where's the Beef?
Or in this case ...substance.

Lessons from the Top: The 50 Most Successful Business Leaders in America--and What You Can Learn From Them Review

Lessons from the Top: The 50 Most Successful Business Leaders in America--and What You Can Learn From Them
Average Reviews:

The authors -- with Spencer Stuart (www.spencerstuart.com) -- had access to some distinguished (Lou Gerstner; Andy Grove, Bill Gates) and some not so distinguished (Bernie Ebbers, Ken Lay) CEOs, and they used Gallup to conduct series of interviews and polls trying to get some insights as to what makes some CEOs successful. What the authors produce are a series of capsules (2-4 pages for each CEO) which are descriptive of the CEOs and companies but have very little analysis.
It is in failing to use the resources at their disposal and access to some remarkable people to draw significant insights, that makes for the biggest shortfall of the book. One may just as well read a description of the CEOs or the companies in a business magazine or the Wall Street Journal.
There are no unique insights to be gained from this book. Yes, some of the CEOs provide some discussion points based on their experience, but much of the space is devoted to their company's specific problems at a particular time (thus leaders of questionable integrity, such as Ebbers and Lay were included).
What in my opinion the authors should have done is go above the specific company experience and focus on the qualities of these interesting individuals and show what has allowed them to have such significant impact on the business world and out society.
Unfortunately such insights are absent from the book. What a pity!

When acquaintances ask me to explain investing to them, I tell them it's not something you can learn in a five minute conversation, and I tell them to get a few books on the subject. Although I have not found a single book that is completely satisfactory, this one is good. And it's not too large, which unfortunately is important because a lot of people have short attention spans and would never make it through a more verbose primer.

This book attracted a lot of attention from the Federal Trade
Commission, who regulates mergers in the U.S. In fact, they organized a Research Roundtable around the book in December 2002 (see http://www.ftc.gov/be/rt/mergerroundtable.htm for the transcripts). Although the math is strenuous, there is plenty of explanatory material here to make this interesting to students and practitioners of mergers.

Mergers And Efficiency: Changes Across Time focuses on one aspect of the corporate finance revolution that restructured Corporate America and led to the longest expansion in U.S. history - changes in rates of merger efficiency. Demystifying this most controversial and dynamic period of U.S. economic history is key to understanding the business, financial and economic innovations that defined the last two decades of the 20th century. In addition, it is important to create a careful empirical understanding of the conditions under which merger activity increased or decreased firm efficiency, industrial productivity, and overall improvements in aggregate output and economic performance.

This book explains how to merge CC (critical chain) and PM (project management) to achieve a truly successful CCPM implementation. For me, the most impactful part of the book is the chapter on Execution, where prior to this book there has been a void in the literature. Larry goes beyond CCPM execution rules to discuss other aspects of project management such as Issue and Action Management, Change Control, and Project Reporting. The illustrations of the mechanics of execution of all functions of LPM makes this book the most complete and useful discussion of LPM currently available. The description of CCPM Roles in Chapter 6 is the best I've ever seen.
Chapters 1-3 discuss foundational principles which are explained in detail in Larry's other books. However, I really like this book's concise presentation as reference material. Chapter 5 summarizes the eight principles for success from Leach's book Lean Project Management and Chapter 7 discusses principles of change management from John Kotter's Leading Change and the follow-on books The Heart of Change and The Heart of Change Field Guide. Chapter 8 provides a much-needed tutorial on how to create an effective project plan. Chapter 9 on Improvement introduces improvement tools such as the thinking processes of TOC and Six Sigma for sustaining and improving on initial gains.
Consolidating all of that knowledge in a single location with the format Larry has chosen makes this a powerful, concentrated learning opportunity for someone with limited time for self-study. Lean Project Leadership is a HUGE contribution to the existing literature.

Carl Crow, a Tough Old China Hand: The Life, Times, and Adventures of an American in Shanghai Review

Carl Crow, a Tough Old China Hand: The Life, Times, and Adventures of an American in Shanghai
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I enjoyed the book because Carl Crow did live an interesting life (journalism, marketing and hobnobbing with China's elite), in an interesting place (Shanghai) at an interesting time (pre World War 2).
That said, I have a few complaints. It is obvious that the author was working with very incomplete archival material, as the book has a "distance" from the subject that if he had talked to many people who had known Carl Crow should not be present. I felt like I was reading a summary of other reports, rather than a book that made Carl Crow really come alive. It is unfortunate that no one wrote a good biography before he died or shortly thereafter.
Secondly, I think the editing was terrible. Numerous times throughout the book, I read something and I said "Didn't I just read that?", and there it was - a similiar fact or statement in the paragraph above. No excuse for that kind of thing...
By far the best part of the book for me was when Japan invaded and the recently evacuated Carl Crow decided to go back to China, via the Burma Road, to report on the resistance and drum up support for China in America. This had the makings of engrossing book right there but unfortunately it was only one chapter of this effort.

Today, when many organizations have achieved high levels of quality (and their rivals have too) where's the next competitive edge? In time, or, who can make it, market it and sell it faster. Companies are desperate to find ways to do things not just better, but quicker and "It's About Time!" offers an explanation of how to make time work to competitive advantage. In "It's About Time!" Guaspari presents the engaging story of the fictitious company, Punctuation Inc., and its struggle to understand how "time" fits into "quality". The text suggests that quality is not just doing things right the first time, or doing the right things the first time, but doing the right things the first time.

I received an special offer for this book via Clickbank. Book was "free" as long as I'd pay postage. A very good deal, I though.
This is a good book. Not great, but worth checking out. I give credit to the author for covering so many aspects of online business in one book. The problem is, there isn't enough space for everything he wants to cover-- at least in detail. It's kind of like being at a buffet, with a lot of choices, but only being able to take a tiny bite. You get an idea of what is available, but don't walk away totally satisfied.
Luckily, I have been studying online marketing for a while. When I read this stuff, I got what he was saying. If this is your first book about online maketing though, or you're looking to "get rich quick", you may end up frustrated as some of the aspects here will likely be too complicated for you to understand since you'll have to "fill in the blanks" yourself. For a beginner, I think something like Laptop Lifestyle - How to Quit Your Job and Make a Good Living on the Internet (Volume 1 - Quick Start Guide to Making Money Online) is a better option, since it moves a little slower and gives step-by-step lists of what you can do to either sell your own products online or make money using affiliate programs.
The best part about this book is that it gives detailed case studies of successful businesses and how they are making money online. There are a lot of ways to make money online and this will get you thinking about how you can find something that works for you.

You have to be carefull with these National Speakers Asso. folks who write their speech into a book. The author says in the book that she heard Zig Ziglar when she was 14, skipped her Senior year of high school, took some business courses in college and went out on the speech circut. Her lack of real world work experience shows in the book. Many many topics with nothing covered in depth. No advice on dealing with conflicting priorities - just the suggestion that you not let your priorities conflict. Lots of her advice has nothing to do with productivity like "you should dress professionally" and when it does it is pretty simplistic like "say no from the heart." I was looking for a corporate veteran who would share proven techniques to get the right things done and get home earlier - I did not find it in this book.

Successful Meetings: How to Plan, Prepare, and Execute Top-Notch Business Meetings
Average Reviews:

This book could help anyone create a successful meeting. I've had meetings before where only 3 people show up on time (out of 15 invitees!) and I didn't know what to do. If I had read this book then, I would have known how to encourage prompt arrival prior to the meeting and wouldn't have had that problem. I really like the section on how to set up the room. At my office, most of the meeting rooms are already arranged, but if I took the time to rearrange the chairs, it would have a dramatic effect on the participation. Overall, this book provides a great overview for how to lead a meeting that gets results. It covers the basic logistical issues as well as tips for encouraging participation, leading brainstorming sessions, who you really need to invite (and not invite), and ideas for resolving personal conflicts between participants. Henkel provides checklists and forms to make the planning process easy and fool-proof. Also, the writing style is simple and easy to understand, including many lists that help clarify the topic. The section on icebreakers is very useful, especially if you are leading a meeting for people that don't always work together as a group. Often, these icebreakers can make for a more productive meeting since people are more likely to share their ideas with people they feel they know. I would recommend this book to anyone planning on leading a meeting (big or small). It will make a world of difference!

A study by MCI found that most professionals believe that over 50 percent of meeting time is wasted. More than 90 percent admit to daydreaming in meetings, 73 percent have brought other work, and 39 percent have fallen asleep. You might think that there would be fewer meetings. However, in the survey 46 percent said they attended more meetings than a year ago. Meetings cost time and money. Many meetings end with no results or outcome. How can you be sure you are using your time and money effectively? The answer: with proper training. Even MBA graduates have never had a course in how to plan, organize, and present an effective meeting. That is the subject of this new book which will teach the proper skills and training to get great results with every meeting, every time!
