This book is not an anti-male diatribe, nor is it sentimental gush. Marion Luna Brem's book provides incredibly practical advice useful to both genders. And yet she does not shy from her own femininity in her writing; she is not afraid to appeal to women's sensibilities or leverage their natural tendencies. Brem provides tips that are helpful in all aspects of life, since she claims that every relationship involves some kind of "sale," if not a literal one. Topics include utilizing the assets of others, first impressions, negotiating (which is all about relationship), and even styles of dress. This is a worthwhile read for women in a position to sell or promote any product, service, or cause. Men would be well advised to pick it up also.

This is a great accounting book. It delivers in what it promises, The chapters are arranged in a logical progression. The pedagogy is elegant. Before I read this book I was lost in the shuffle of debits and credits, with this book I have mastered these a bit.
I'am an American, the content of this book is a bit British. There is a section on VAT, the conceptual framework is British- centric. If you have read Keiso's Intermediate Accouning then you'll know that there is a conceptual framework based on standard setting by governing bodies. A further difference is how trading profit and loss are treated, as I've learned it nominal accounts such as revenue and expense accounts are closed to income summary to finally be debited or credited to retained earnings. In this book it is different, there exist a trading an loss accounts where everything is refelected. Also the authors use individual customer accounts rather than accounts recievable and accounts payable.
This is the new edition of the book, if you are not convinced you could look at the reviews of the previous edition. I based my purchase decision on the previous edition reviews. I also found this book on Amazon UK.

Business "surprises" occur with an alarming frequency. It is an understatement to say they exact a considerable toll on the organization.
According to Kenneth G. McGee, even the worst catastrophes rarely happen without warning. The author is a group vice president and research fellow at Gartner, Inc., a consultancy that specializes in information technology. His book, Heads Up, is about predicting the present.
Managers need to understand what is happening now and how these current events will impact future success. This involves extracting raw empirical information, analyzing it and determining its meaning and implications.
So what is new, you ask? McGee answers managers do not need all the data to understand the present. Only enough to answer the question, "Where are we right now in meeting our corporate goals?"
To an effective executive, this current information always reveals opportunities to improve results. There is a tendency to confuse real-time information with real-time response. In the perfect situation, the following processes happen in the background between the time when an event happens and that event's impact is felt.
1.Information related to the event is monitored.
2.A change in the information is captured.
3.The information is analyzed.
4.The information is reported.
5.A response is initiated.
No manager can afford to monitor all his information sources. To determine which sources to monitor, information should be filtered using the following Identification Model:
1.List goals for the planning period.
2.Prioritize them.
3.Evaluate them.
4.List causal events.
5.Prioritize the causal events.
6.Evaluate whether the real-time information will enable the executive to respond effectively.
Each candidate generated by the Identification Model is subjected to the Justification Model:
1.Does the goal the information further the corporate vision and mission?
2.Does the goal meet current corporate priorities?
3.Is the information material to the goal?
4.What is the goal's corporate impact?
McGee's book goes beyond the usual real-time hype. It will help executives anticipate events and changes. The result: potential disasters will be transformed into opportunities.

There are tonnes of book on this topic. After reading books such as First Thing First, Getting Things Done, Flow and others, I had been only been partially solving my clutters.
It seems that this book was the final piece that links all the pieces together. However, this effect although work for me, may not work for others as all of us have different experiences that may have different missing pieces to put the whole picture together. For me, somehow it was this book.
Books like "First Thing First" and the like focus on the big helicopter/Hubble-telescope view. I was not fortunate enough to transform the high-level visions, aspirations and life goals that I've derived from putting the things proposed in the books, into concrete results. The difference between reality and the visions were still distant.
Then books that focus more on where the rubber hits the road (e.g. "Getting Things Done") were able to help me to reduce my clutters. Although things were more manageable, I still needed a lot of time doing the nitty-gritty of time management work. I was getting more efficient, but the degree of improvement in my overall effectiveness were not what I desired for.
"Time Mastery" made me to infer that in order move ahead in the midst of abundant things to complete, one needs to think strategically. One needs to think in another plain.
In our ever fast-pace society, there are too many people in the hurry. Yet, success may not pay justice to the effort and sacrifices that they put in in their lives. Ask anyone and he will tell you that there are many intances of CEOs of big companies who are calm and seem to be living in an unhurried world. They brought their companies to the finishing line first. However, they do it in a way akin that beats convention wisdom that is in an unhurried manner.
In my work as a software development consultant, I have been plagued with overtime work. Many things that I had wanted to do have escape my clasps. After thinking strategically in my time management, not only my productivity in my work has increased, but I found that suddenly there is now actually time for me to do things that I had been wanted to do and still have time to spend with my 1-year old son.
I just hope that this book could be the missing piece that gels all the others in your time management the way it did for me.

Building on their Balanced Scorecard approach, Kaplan and Norton have developed an impressive framework in The Strategy-Focused Organization for the implementation of strategy. They have found that 90% of strategic initiatives fail due not to formulation but to implementation difficulties. Successful implementation of strategy requires all parts of an organizations to be aligned and linked to the strategy, while strategy itself must become a continual process in which everyone is involved. The Balanced Scorecard, originally seen by the authors as a measurement tool, is now presented as a means for implementing strategy by creating alignment and focus.
Financial measures report on lagging financial indicators. The Balanced Scorecard aims to report on the drivers of future value creation. The book shows in detail how this is done from four perspectives: Financial, customer, internal business perspective, and learning and growth (these are outlined on p.77). These four perspectives produce a highly detailed framework when combined with the five principles of a strategy-focused organization: 1: Translate the strategy to operational terms. 2: Align the organization to the strategy. 3: Make strategy everyone's everyday job. 4: Make strategy a continual process. 5: Mobilize change through executive leadership.
Absorbing every detail of this book will require many hours. The sheer detail of this complex system requires considerable attention, perhaps more than some readers can muster, but clearly distinguishes this work from many books full of business fluff. The style tends to be turgid and pedantic while being admirably complete. Readers can grasp the essence of the book's central points by reading only Chapter 1 (Creating the Strategy-Focused Organization), Chapter 3 (Building Strategy Maps), and Chapter 8 (Creating Strategic Awareness). Skip quickly through the chapters in Part Two: Aligning the Organization to Create Synergies. This section is the least engaging of the five. The balanced scorecard approach to strategy will appeal to those with a systematizing frame of mind. The book is filled with complex diagrams of corporate processes consisting of interrelated boxes and forces.
This approach is extremely detailed and complex. It requires a major commitment and effort. Though the authors claim it can be implemented by smaller organizations, this will be more challenging than for large companies who can commit a team full time to working out the details.
Much of the value of the approach may lie not so much in following through on completely working out the balanced scorecard but on absorbing the lessons regarding organizational integration across silos and the importance of clarity about mission, strategy, and goals. The balanced scorecard is one way to achieve and implement this clarity but not the only way. Another would be continual reiteration of these (as in Confessions of An Extraordinary Executive). Some companies may benefit from strict use of this system, including finding units of measurement for its implementation. Others will gain much from applying the insights without such a formal and complete implementation.

For readers looking to understand the development of management theory, this book is an excellent place to start. Many rookie managers feel like imposters until they grow into their jobs, but if you are scaling that learning curve, help has arrived. Authors Loren B. Belker and Gary S. Topchik provide managerial coaching for new occupants of corner offices (or, at least, of cubes with windows). The text provides novice managers with concrete examples, solid discussions, helpful suggestions and insights on a wide menu of corporate challenges. Although the book is redundant in spots, and needs more extensive chapter summaries, it is a terrific tutorial for managers. We recommend this book to everyone in managerial slots, especially those who just arrived.

Similiar to Kennedy's (1993) "Preparing for the Twenty-First Century," Drucker's presentation is different. Drucker uses less jargon; does not read as research article; provides perspective on shared topics; and touches on areas not covered by Kennedy. Drucker provides a analysis of four major change issues: management, the information-based organization, the economy, and the society. Drucker could have subsituted the concept "knowledge" for "change" for his theme. His assessments, projections, and questions are crisp. He gives the reader more substance than just raw data, interweaving data within a setting to provide a more familiar, dimensional look at an issue. For those readers looking to understand the current business and social environment, Drucker's exploration will not be disappointing. For those active in business, his writing may confirm what experienced managers are already aware. Drucker's book may make a viable text for college undergraduate and graduate students considering today's economic and social factors, their relationships, and possible outcomes in tomorrow's society.

Ah, the business/career advice book, that calm appeal to mature rumination in favor of some innovative approach! That is NOT this book. This is a would-be inflammatory polemic looking to send mobs of its readers, pitchforks and torches in hand, to overturn the oppressive and inefficient old regime and bring in a new and happier age.
Okay, I exaggerate a bit. The book is full of rational arguments establishing the dysfunctionality of the performance review ("PR""). The tone, however, is wholly unlike that of most such books. Culbert writes with the zeal of a righteous preacher, who knows sin when he sees it and strives to extirpate it root and branch. And he wants the reader to join him. He hammers away (sometimes repetitiously, as in all good sermons) at the evil and promotes a remedy at once more effective and virtuous, what Culbert calls a performance preview ("PP").
Other reviewers outlined Culbert's strictures against the PR, so I will not repeat them at length. My own experience has been that Culbert is spot on. The PR is irremediably one-sided, subjective, boss-serving, dishonest, counter-productive and backward looking. It leaves employees demoralized and concerned more about personal "faults" than business objectives.
The PP, as Culbert describes it, at least has a chance to create true teams, with everyone (including the boss) jointly accountable for achieving team goals that reflect business objectives. To work, the PP requires trust and honesty between and among subordinates and boss. Culbert recognizes that this can be difficult both to establish and to sustain and must be worked at. Without trust and honesty the PP approach will fail.
Culbert's views are anchored in his deep belief that a desire for useful work is a central part of our humanity. The work experience, he thinks, should thus be satisfying as well as efficient; and fulfilling as well as profitable. He believes that the PR makes attaining these goals impossible. He may well be right.
This is an interesting and passionately argued book, well worth the reading.

Time Power by Brian Tracy is about taking control of your schedule so that you free up more time to do more and more. Using strategies like using a organizer, figuring out what your goals and priorities are, and things like refusing to take coffee breaks are examples of what can be found in this book.
The advice in this book is solid. I especially liked the chapters on organizing your tasks by priority, developing excellent work habits, and overcoming procrastination. The ideas presented are logical and beneficial to maintaining a highly productive lifestyle, while they remain practical and easy to implement.
However I felt I had read this book before because many of the ideas presented in this book are repeated in his other books. I found very little content in the book that was actually new. I also thought the chapter "Time Management Techniques for Salespeople" didn't belong in this book. That chapter should have been in a book directed to salespeople rather than a general audience, and which made me think it was just added for the sake of adding material.
This book is a good read if you never have read Brian Tracy material before, or if you would like to review Brian Tracy's material again. But if you are looking for new material, best to steer clear. 3 out of 5 stars.
