Kickstart Your Time Management: The Complete Guide to Great Work Habits (The Kickstart Series) Review

Kickstart Your Time Management: The Complete Guide to Great Work Habits (The Kickstart Series)
Average Reviews:

Most likely, if you're interested in achieving time management, you're not interested in spending a lot of your precious time reading about it. English author Frances Kay understands this and she knows her audience. Her succinct, practical guide offers tips and suggestions in such a way that you can open it to any page and glean valuable advice at a glance. Kay digs deeply into building time management skills in the office, though she glosses over time management outside the workplace. Although the book contains very few groundbreaking ideas, it does contain several "kickstart tips" that are very much like proverbs. And like proverbs, they should be taken to heart - they'll help you improve your time use. If you feel as if you've lost control of the minutes in your day, we assure you that you can begin the process of taking them back by picking up this book.

Doing Business presents quantitative indicators on business regulations and the protection of property rights that can be compared across 183 economies--from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe--and over time. Data in Doing Business 2010 are current as of June 1, 2009. The indicators are used to analyze economic outcomes and identify what reforms have worked, where and why.

Just finished "Business Exposed". Loved it! Often it is a bit of chore to read a business book. Not this one. It is very well written, fast paced and grabs your attention from page 1. Very much enjoyed that the writer combines his own insights with findings from quality academic research when making a (controversial) point. This book makes you smarter, makes you rethink what you thought about business. Highly recommended!

Dave Kahle is one of the best writers on selling skills on the country. While there have been enumerable books written on time management, this is the best one I've seen on time management techniques that are of direct and immediate value to someone in sales. Best of all, while most people read books on time management, few ever put the information to work...Dave makes it simple enough that readers are much more likely to implement his suggestions. Highly recommended!

Take Back Your Time: How to Regain Control of Work, Information, and Technology
Average Reviews:

This is a terrific synthesis of the best time-management literature and Ms. Jasper's substantial practical experience working one-on-one with clients. What sets the book apart from others in the field is its emphasis on usefulness. Jasper outlines what works, and what does not work, and explains why. After reading her book, I felt like I was able to make my own, informed decisions about managing my time, papers, and belongings. Also, because Jasper isn't selling a line of time-management products her recommendations and insights are not colored by any hidden agenda. The book is well researched, well organized, and well written, and includes a substantial bibliography and a useable index. If you are looking for the one time-management book to buy, for home or office, this is the one.

The Silver Lining: An Innovation Playbook for Uncertain Times Review

The Silver Lining: An Innovation Playbook for Uncertain Times
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I liked this book. It wasn't particularly long, but it was simple and packed a powerful message for today's business leaders. Innovations a company create are the key to its success. It's innovations that keep existing companies in business. And its innovations that allow startups to get up and running. I found the book to be well organized and well written. Each chapter (9 in total) had a nice little summary which made skimming the book easy before reading it from cover to cover.
For some reason this book made its way to the B&N bookshelves about two or three weeks before its official release date of June 1 per Amazon. I read it back on May 19th along with The Future Arrived Yesterday: The Rise of the Protean Corporation and What It Means for You which I thought was a better book by a little. Both books talk about how business leaders have to stay ahead of their competition and be willing to give the customer what the customer wants, and be able to respond nimbly to change in the economy, the industry, and the market.
Whether change comes about gradually, abruptly in the form of a crisis, or somewhat quickly companies and their leaders need to always be thinking about innovations that can keep them competitive. Usually such innovations relate to some sort of convenience, accessibility, affordability, simplicity, or reinvention. As long as R&D is done strategically rather than haphazardly it shouldn't amount to a black hole for dumping company resources. And the smart and savvy business leader will realize that every forced change usually presents opportunities to be exploited.
The subtitle to this book says it is supposed to be an innovation playbook for uncertain times. I'm not so sure "certain times" ever existed. And I'm pretty much positive that uncertain times are here to stay. So in my humble opinion this book is really an Innovation Playbook - period. I think this book should be required reading for all business leaders and entrepreneurs. 5 stars!

Experts agree: The turbulence triggered by the economic shock of 2008 constitutes the "new normal." Unfortunately, too many managers have become paralyzed by it, capable only of slashing costs indiscriminately.Though examining spending during recessions makes sense, the smartest executives do much more. As Scott Anthony reveals in The Silver Lining, these leaders continue innovating--by stopping ineffective initiatives, changing key business processes, and starting more productive behaviors. Result? Their companies emerge from downturns stronger than ever. Providing a wealth of ideas, tools, and examples from diverse industries, Anthony explains how to safeguard your company's profitability during even the toughest recessions. You'll discover how to:-Prune your innovation and business portfolio to liberate resources for more promising initiatives - Adopt a radical new market-segmentation scheme that helps you re-feature your offerings to reduce costs while delivering new value to customers - Reinvent your innovation process to drive fresh growth - Mitigate innovation risks by conducting strategic experiments and forging alliances with customers and other external entities - Appeal to increasingly value-conscious customers to fend off low-cost attackersIn today's brutal economic climate, executives must pare costs to the bone while planting and nurturing seeds for tomorrow's growth. The Silver Lining explains how to master this seemingly impossible challenge.

Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution Review

Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ross, Weill and Robertson do what no one else has done in the area of Enterprise Architecture (EA). They have made it understandable and accessible for the executive. EA is an over abused term, often by IT people to intimidate business users and others. Ross, Weill and Roberston provide a well researched, clearly written approach for enterprise architecture and how it applied to business and technical strategy.
The subject may sound dry, but think of it this way -- how do you design your company for current success and future flexibility and you have an idea of the power behind the practices in this book. I say practices rather than ideas because this book is filled with well documented case studies and discussions of what real executives are doing. UPS, CEMEX, Delta Airlines, ING Direct, TD Banknorth are all companies that have realized value. This makes the book practitioner focused and all the more valuable.
Enterprise Architecture zealots will find this book wanting in terms of detailed diagrams and statement professing the unqualified necessity of EA. That is a signal to business executives that this is a book for them to understand the business implications of enterprise design and architecture.
This work is the result of careful examination and study of the topic from a business perspective and that care shows. The book is a balanced and action oriented view on EA, rather than a source of gushing enthusiasm which is something you find in more consulting oriented books.
If you are thinking about how your enterprise can become and sustain its competitive power, change at low risk, and take advantage of new opportunities; then EA may be an answer and this book is the clearest business description of EA, how to implement it and how it works out there.
If you are an IT person, read this book to see how IT concepts like EA are really business initiatives and how to explain them as such to your executives. If you have unbridled enthusiasm for EA then you may be disappointed in this straightforward, business focused discussion.
The book is organized clearly and presents a well structured argument that can lead executives to better understand the value of an enterprise level design.
Chapter 1: To execute your strategy, first build your foundation. This chapter discusses the factors that underpin a well designed organization that is agile and efficient.
Chapter 2: Define your operating model. This chapter covers the missing piece for many company strategies and plans -- how are we going to operate. This section includes an analysis of four major operating model types and what makes them successful.
Chapter 3: Implement the operating model via enterprise architecture. This chapter is among the most important as it puts EA in its proper place as a tool for strategy realization rather than as an end to itself.
Chapter 4: Navigate the states of Enterprise Architecture Maturity. This is a look at the benefits executives should expect as they invest in and realize results from EA
Chapter 5: Cash In on Learning. This chapter discusses the use of management practices and the ability to improve the enterprise because it has an explicit detailed design in the EA.
Chapter 6: Build the foundation one project at a time. With the rational and value of EA understood the book now turns to how you establish an EA and realize its value.
Chapter 7: Use Enterprise Architecture to guide outsourcing. Outsourcing is a big issue that will not go away and one that is subject to abuse, unless it is part of an enterprise design and therefore part of the EA.
Chapter 8 Now- exploit your foundation for profitable growth. This chapter should be read early by executives to understand what is possible for the business, top and bottom line growth.
Chapter 9 Take Charge! The Leadership Agenda discusses the actions and principles needed to make the enterprise successful through EA. This chapter is pretty standard, but it does a great job of showing how EA fits with what executives already know about leadership and growth.

As one who normally avoids "self-help" books, the title amused me enough to pick this book up from the sale bin - despite not being a business-jock. Expecting yet another business adaptation of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" or Musashi's "The Book of Five Rings" I was relieved to find a wealth of useful information on all aspects of health (mind, body & spirit). And best of all, from a medical doctor (not some self-styled health guru with the latest fad).
This has become my "bible" of the best medically sound advice to (getting &) staying fit, healthy and sane. It's all here : human psysiology and how nutrition works, fitness advice: from hotel circuits to yoga and stress-coping techniques(effective worrying!).
Armed with this knowledge about yourself, the next medical check-up you go for should be the most cost-effective you've ever had!

Payback Time: Making Big Money Is the Best Revenge Review

Payback Time: Making Big Money Is the Best Revenge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've read Rule # 1 back when it first came out and I thought it was excellent. I'm about halfway done with Payback Time and so far 90% of the information is simply rehashed information from his first book. The one thing that appears to have changed is that MSN now apparently gives 10 year data for free, which was not available when Rule # 1 came out (back then you had to pay a third-party company to obtain 10-year data about a stock and MSN and Yahoo only offered 5-year data if I remember correctly). So if you haven't read either book and are wondering which one to pick up I would say go for the second one (Payback Time). If you've read Rule # 1, reading the second book certainly won't hurt for repetition sake, just don't expect any major new information. The concept of stockpiling is nothing revolutionary. Simply buy more shares when the price goes down. Wow. The one thing I did not like about Payback Time is how Phil is constantly directing the reader back to his website for every little piece of extra information. And he doesn't tell you what link on his site to click on for each piece of information so you end up randomly clicking on his site until you find what you're looking for (not to mention the fact that you have to register in order to use the site in the first place and it keeps on logging you out every few minutes for some reason).
Having said that, I still have to give credit to Phil for his clear writing style. He has a special ability to take complex information and making it understandable to the average person. I also like the fact that he gives his email address in the book and encourages readers to contact him with any questions. I like that type of service. I will update this review as soon as I'm done reading the book.
3/16/10: As a side note, I also have noticed, like others, that many of the raving reviews for this book sound fake (some almost sound like an infomercial) and are from users who have only reviewed a single item (i.e. this book).
4/1/10: In chapter 5, "Eight Baby Steps to Wealth", Phil walks you through a tool on MSN's website called "Deluxe (stock) Screener" (also known as "Supercharge your search"). It's supposed to be a free stock screener that lets you find companies that match Phil's criteria for great companies (saves you a ton of time). Unfortunately, this tool no longer exists (MSN retired it back in November of '09!). However, Phil recently posted an entry on his blog saying that you can find the exact same information on google's website. If you go to "Google Finance" look for Stock Screener. It's supposed to be just as good as MSN's Deluxe Screener. I will be playing around with this tool and will post an update soon.
5/26: Remember how I said that Phil gives out his email address in his book and encourages readers to ask him questions? Well, I sent him a question (regarding the use of Google Finance - see my post from 4/1) in late March all I got was an automated reply saying that someone would get back to me and no one ever did. So much for that. So if you have any questions, I would call the number listed on Phil's website. They will answer your questions.

Don't get mad, get even… Phil Town's first book, the #1 New York Times bestseller Rule #1, was a guide to stock trading for people who believe they lack the knowledge to trade. But because many people aren't ready to go from mutual funds directly into trading without understanding investing—for the long term – he created Payback Time. Too often, people see long-term investing as "mutual fund contributing" – otherwise known as "long-term hoping." But the sad truth is that mutual fund investors are, to a stunning degree, pinning their hopes on an institution that is hopeless. It turns out that only 4% of fund managers consistently beat the S&P 500 index over the long term, which means that 96% of fund investors see a smaller return on their nest egg than a chimpanzee who simply buys stocks in the 500 biggest companies in America and watches what happens. But it's worse than that. The net effect of hitching your wagon to mutual funds is that over a lifetime they'll fritter away as much 60% of your nest egg in fees. Once you understand how funds engineer this, you'll rush to invest on your own. Payback Time's risk-free approach is called "stockpiling" and it's how billionaires get rich in bad markets. It's a set of rules for investing (not trading but investing) in the right businesses at the right time -- rules that will ensure you make the big money.

Time Management (Management Pocketbooks S.) Review

Time Management (Management Pocketbooks S.)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A very compact and useful 120 page presentation on core time management principles, and tools ready to use in the workplace, by undergraduate business students, or consultants.
Topics include: managing work activities, managing your thinking and reasoning, managing relationships, managing communications, and managing your work environment. Tools include: Pareto, importance vs urgency matrix, delegation checklists, mind-maps, fishbone diagrams, stress management and more.
The material is well presented in the context of business needs. On the negative side, the content is dated, and the compact format limits the number of toolsets and the extent of discussion of contemporary time/project management software.

The Sticking Point Solution: 9 Ways to Move Your Business from Stagnation to Stunning Growth In Tough Economic Times Review

The Sticking Point Solution: 9 Ways to Move Your Business from Stagnation to Stunning Growth In Tough Economic Times
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book provides instantly actionable strategies and tactics for increasing revenue and profit with virtually zero risk. Jay Abraham has taught for years the awesome power of unconventional marketing and it's ability to produce immediate breakthroughs in sales and profit.
The stories and examples demonstrating precisely how this can be done are compelling. For example, on page 223 Abraham tells the story of a client who sold large, expensive training programs. They generated a high-volume of leads, but actually converted a small percentage to sales. By sending a simple sales letter to those who did NOT buy, and offering them an alternative program (provided by another company) at a lower price point, they generated $10,000,000 in new sales. From "dead" leads of prospects who had already said no to the main offering. A simple, brilliant, low-cost and virtually zero-risk strategy that resulted in an enormous pay day.
Another compelling example offered is the dry cleaner in Chicago Abraham worked with who turned a single store front with average performance into three highly successful locations. At that point the owner was satisfied with his profits and did not want to put in more time or effort to grow beyond the three stores. Abraham explained how his "system" for success in the dry cleaning business could be marketed to other dry cleaners in other states. The owner went on to "license" his ads and marketing system to 3,000 cleaners at $100 per month. This is the type of break-through thinking Abraham provides.
This book will OPEN YOUR EYES to the dozens and dozens of revenue and profit opportunities in your business just waiting to be capitalized on.
What makes this book unique from all of the other Jay Abraham books is that, in addition to providing breakthrough concepts and powerfully compelling examples, the Sticking Point Solution also includes key point summaries and immediate action steps at then end of each chapter. This provides a much needed bridge between theory and action.
Brilliant, compelling and highly recommended.

Businesses can plateau, stall, OR stagnate...without the owners or key executives even realizing it. A business might be achieving incremental year-on-year growth and yet still be in a situation of stagnation or stall. Why? Because entrepreneurs and executives often focus on the wrong things and don't know how to solve the problems that get their businesses stuck. The purpose of The Sticking Point Solution is to help entrepreneurs and executives recognize the ways in which their businesses may be stuck, and to then give them tools for getting unstuck and enjoying exponential growth. To achieve this, Jay will help you identify the nine "sticking points" that keep entrepreneurs and executives alike grinding just to survive, instead of growing and thriving. The results: freedom from stagnation and stalling, new levels of profitability and success; and a much greater sense of control and pleasure from running the enterprise. How to achieve this exquisite state is the impetus for The Sticking Point Solution.
