This is a slim book, but one that is packed with smart attractively presented insights.
In an age when few of have the time to read as much as we would like to, this is a book full of short anecdotes and stories that illustrate a range of themes from success to leadership and decision-making.
Masha Malka is living proof of what can happen if human potential is allowed to express itself. She was born and raised in the Ukraine in the last days of the Soviet Union, and she and her family were finally able to leave when she was seventeen years old. But the family left as stateless refugees with nothing more than a few hundred dollars and scant knowledge of any language apart from Russian. Now, only fifteen or sixteen years later, Masha is living in Spain, married with three children and enjoying a successful business and a growing reputation as a trainer and coach.
The book consists of 52 short messages and questions, each followed by a series of well-chosen action steps. Many will be familiar to anyone interested in personal development, but Masha has distilled the essence of many other teachings, and used some of he methods of neurolinguistic programming in writing the book. So the text is powerful, and enhanced by a large number of witty illustrations by Anna Polonsky.
There are a number of well-chosen quotations, though I have a tiny grumble that Masha repeats the oft-quoted mistake that Marianne Williamson's wonderful piece starting with the words, "We fear that we are inadequate, but our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure..." was used by Nelson Mandela. It never was, but that hardly detracts from the central message of Masha's work: that you can make big changes in your life with the smallest of shifts in attitude and perspective, followed by some brief but concerted effort.
This is a book that you can either read from cover to cover, or better yet, dip into whenever you have a few moments, so it is one for the briefcase as well as the bedside table.
Highly recommended.Richard G. Petty, MD, author of Healing, Meaning and Purpose: The Magical Power of the Emerging Laws of Life
